Chapter 12
The Call of Abram
1
Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤊
יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְרָ֔ם לֶךְ־ לְךָ֛ מֵאַרְצְךָ֥ וּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ אָבִ֑יךָ וּמִבֵּ֣ית אֶל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַרְאֶֽךָּ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·rām leḵ- lə·ḵā mê·’ar·ṣə·ḵā ū·mim·mō·w·laḏ·tə·ḵā ’ā·ḇî·ḵā ū·mib·bêṯ ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’ar·’e·kā — WLC · 1

I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

וְאֶֽעֶשְׂךָ֙ גָּד֔וֹל לְג֣וֹי וַאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔ שְׁמֶ֑ךָ וַאֲגַדְּלָ֖ה וֶהְיֵ֖ה בְּרָכָֽה׃ wə·’e·‘eś·ḵā gā·ḏō·wl lə·ḡō·w wa·’ă·ḇā·reḵ·ḵā šə·me·ḵā wa·’ă·ḡad·də·lāh weh·yêh bə·rā·ḵāh — WLC · 2

I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.

וַאֲבָֽרֲכָה֙ מְבָ֣רְכֶ֔יךָ אָאֹ֑ר וּמְקַלֶּלְךָ֖ כֹּ֖ל מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ וְנִבְרְכ֣וּ בְךָ֔ wa·’ă·ḇā·ră·ḵāh mə·ḇā·rə·ḵe·ḵā ’ā·’ōr ū·mə·qal·lel·ḵā kōl miš·pə·ḥōṯ hā·’ă·ḏā·māh wə·niḇ·rə·ḵū ḇə·ḵā — WLC · 3

So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him,… and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five… years old… when he left Haran.
𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤍
אַבְרָ֗ם וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֔ה דִּבֶּ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ ל֑וֹט וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אִתּ֖וֹ וְאַבְרָ֗ם חָמֵ֤שׁ וְשִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה בֶּן־ שָׁנִים֙ בְּצֵאת֖וֹ מֵחָרָֽן׃ ’aḇ·rām way·yê·leḵ ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ’ê·lāw lō·wṭ way·yê·leḵ ’it·tōw wə·’aḇ·rām ḥā·mêš wə·šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh ben- šā·nîm bə·ṣê·ṯōw mê·ḥā·rān — WLC · 4

And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew… Lot, and all the possessions - and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out… for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,

אַבְרָם֩ וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֜וֹ וְאֶת־ שָׂרַ֨י בֶּן־ אָחִ֗יו וְאֶת־ ל֣וֹט כָּל־ רְכוּשָׁם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר רָכָ֔שׁוּ וְאֶת־ הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשׂ֣וּ בְחָרָ֑ן וַיֵּצְא֗וּ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ אַ֣רְצָה כְּנַ֔עַן וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃ ’aḇ·rām way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw wə·’eṯ- śā·ray ben- ’ā·ḥîw wə·’eṯ- lō·wṭ kāl- rə·ḵū·šām ’ă·šer rā·ḵā·šū wə·’eṯ- han·ne·p̄eš ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śū ḇə·ḥā·rān way·yê·ṣə·’ū lā·le·ḵeṯ ’ar·ṣāh kə·na·‘an way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’ar·ṣāh kə·nā·‘an — WLC · 5

Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at Shechem. And at that time the Canaanites were in the land.

אַבְרָם֙ וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר בָּאָ֔רֶץ עַ֚ד מְק֣וֹם עַ֖ד אֵל֣וֹן מוֹרֶ֑ה שְׁכֶ֔ם אָ֥ז וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ ’aḇ·rām way·ya·‘ă·ḇōr bā·’ā·reṣ ‘aḏ mə·qō·wm ‘aḏ ’ê·lō·wn mō·w·reh šə·ḵem ’āz wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî bā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 6

Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring. So [Abram] built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅
יְהוָה֙ וַיֵּרָ֤א אֶל־ אַבְרָ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֶתֵּ֖ן אֶת־ הַזֹּ֑את הָאָ֣רֶץ לְזַ֨רְעֲךָ֔ וַיִּ֤בֶן מִזְבֵּ֔חַ שָׁם֙ לַיהוָ֖ה הַנִּרְאֶ֥ה אֵלָֽיו׃ Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’el- ’aḇ·rām way·yō·mer ’et·tên ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā way·yi·ḇen miz·bê·aḥ šām Yah·weh han·nir·’eh ’ê·lāw — WLC · 7

From there [Abram] moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel… to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and he called on the name of the LORD.

מִשָּׁ֜ם וַיַּעְתֵּ֨ק הָהָ֗רָה מִקֶּ֛דֶם לְבֵֽית־ אֵ֖ל וַיֵּ֣ט אָהֳלֹ֑ה בֵּֽית־ אֵ֤ל מִיָּם֙ וְהָעַ֣י מִקֶּ֔דֶם שָׁ֤ם וַיִּֽבֶן־ מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃ miš·šām way·ya‘·têq hā·hā·rāh miq·qe·ḏem lə·ḇêṯ- ’êl way·yêṭ ʾå̄·ho·lōh bêṯ- ’êl mî·yām wə·hā·‘ay miq·qe·ḏem šām way·yi·ḇen- miz·bê·aḥ Yah·weh way·yiq·rā bə·šêm Yah·weh — WLC · 8

And Abram journeyed on… toward the Negev.

אַבְרָ֔ם וַיִּסַּ֣ע הָל֥וֹךְ וְנָס֖וֹעַ הַנֶּֽגְבָּה׃פ ’aḇ·rām way·yis·sa‘ hā·lō·wḵ wə·nā·sō·w·a‘ han·neḡ·bāh — WLC · 9
Abram and Sarai in Egypt

Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤁𐤃
וַיְהִ֥י רָעָ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ אַבְרָ֤ם וַיֵּ֨רֶד מִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙ שָׁ֔ם לָג֣וּר כִּֽי־ הָרָעָ֖ב בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ כָבֵ֥ד way·hî rā·‘āḇ bā·’ā·reṣ ’aḇ·rām way·yê·reḏ miṣ·ray·māh šām lā·ḡūr kî- hā·rā·‘āḇ bā·’ā·reṣ ḵā·ḇêḏ — WLC · 10

- As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look,… I know that you [are] a beautiful… woman,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤐𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤄
וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הִקְרִ֖יב לָב֣וֹא מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ שָׂרַ֣י הִנֵּה־ נָ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אָֽתְּ׃ יְפַת־ מַרְאֶ֖ה אִשָּׁ֥ה way·hî ka·’ă·šer hiq·rîḇ lā·ḇō·w miṣ·rā·yə·māh way·yō·mer ’el- ’iš·tōw śā·ray hin·nêh- nā yā·ḏa‘·tî kî ’āt yə·p̄aṯ- mar·’eh ’iš·šāh — WLC · 11

and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־ הַמִּצְרִ֔ים יִרְא֤וּ אֹתָךְ֙ וְאָמְר֖וּ זֹ֑את אִשְׁתּ֣וֹ וְהָרְג֥וּ אֹתִ֖י וְאֹתָ֥ךְ יְחַיּֽוּ׃ wə·hā·yāh kî- ham·miṣ·rîm yir·’ū ’ō·ṯāḵ wə·’ā·mə·rū zōṯ ’iš·tōw wə·hā·rə·ḡū ’ō·ṯî wə·’ō·ṯāḵ yə·ḥay·yū — WLC · 12

Please say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well… for your sake, and on account of you my life will be spared.”

נָ֖א אִמְרִי־ אָ֑תְּ אֲחֹ֣תִי לְמַ֙עַן֙ יִֽיטַב־ לִ֣י בַעֲבוּרֵ֔ךְ בִּגְלָלֵֽךְ׃ נַפְשִׁ֖י וְחָיְתָ֥ה nā ’im·rî- ’āt ’ă·ḥō·ṯî lə·ma·‘an yî·ṭaḇ- lî ḇa·‘ă·ḇū·rêḵ biḡ·lā·lêḵ nap̄·šî wə·ḥā·yə·ṯāh — WLC · 13

So when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful…

וַיְהִ֕י אַבְרָ֖ם כְּב֥וֹא מִצְרָ֑יְמָה הַמִּצְרִים֙ אֶת־ וַיִּרְא֤וּ כִּֽי־ הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה מְאֹֽד׃ יָפָ֥ה הִ֖וא way·hî ’aḇ·rām kə·ḇō·w miṣ·rā·yə·māh ham·miṣ·rîm ’eṯ- way·yir·’ū kî- hā·’iš·šāh mə·’ōḏ yā·p̄āh hî — WLC · 14

When Pharaoh’s officials saw [Sarai], they commended her to [him], and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.

פַרְעֹ֔ה שָׂרֵ֣י וַיִּרְא֤וּ אֹתָהּ֙ וַיְהַֽלְל֥וּ אֹתָ֖הּ אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֑ה הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתֻּקַּ֥ח בֵּ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה׃ p̄ar·‘ōh śā·rê way·yir·’ū ’ō·ṯāh way·hal·lū ’ō·ṯāh ’el- par·‘ōh hā·’iš·šāh wat·tuq·qaḥ bêṯ par·‘ōh — WLC · 15

He treated Abram well on her account, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys…, menservants and maidservants, and camels.
𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤌
וּלְאַבְרָ֥ם הֵיטִ֖יב בַּעֲבוּרָ֑הּ וַֽיְהִי־ ל֤וֹ צֹאן־ וּבָקָר֙ וַחֲמֹרִ֔ים וַאֲתֹנֹ֖ת וַעֲבָדִים֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וּגְמַלִּֽים׃ ū·lə·’aḇ·rām hê·ṭîḇ ba·‘ă·ḇū·rāh way·hî- lōw ṣōn- ū·ḇā·qār wa·ḥă·mō·rîm wa·’ă·ṯō·nōṯ wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm ū·šə·p̄ā·ḥōṯ ū·ḡə·mal·lîm — WLC · 16

The LORD, however, afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of… Abram’s wife Sarai.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤂𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤔𐤓𐤉
יְהוָ֧ה׀ אֶת־ וַיְנַגַּ֨ע פַּרְעֹ֛ה בֵּית֑וֹ גְּדֹלִ֖ים וְאֶת־ נְגָעִ֥ים עַל־ דְּבַ֥ר אַבְרָֽם׃ אֵ֥שֶׁת שָׂרַ֖י Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·nag·ga‘ par·‘ōh bê·ṯōw gə·ḏō·lîm wə·’eṯ- nə·ḡā·‘îm ‘al- də·ḇar ’aḇ·rām ’ê·šeṯ śā·ray — WLC · 17

So Pharaoh summoned Abram and asked, “What… have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤕 𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊
פַרְעֹה֙ וַיִּקְרָ֤א לְאַבְרָ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מַה־ זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֑י לָ֚מָּה לֹא־ הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֔י כִּ֥י הִֽוא׃ אִשְׁתְּךָ֖ p̄ar·‘ōh way·yiq·rā lə·’aḇ·rām way·yō·mer mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā lî lām·māh lō- hig·gaḏ·tā lî kî hî ’iš·tə·ḵā — WLC · 18

Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning [Abram], and they sent him away… with his wife and all his possessions -
