Chapter 13

Abram and Lot Part Ways

So Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev— he and his wife and all his possessions…— and Lot [was] with him.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤏𐤌𐤅

אַבְרָ֨ם וַיַּעַל֩ מִמִּצְרַ֜יִם הַנֶּֽגְבָּה׃ ה֠וּא וְאִשְׁתּ֧וֹ וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁר־ ל֛וֹ וְל֥וֹט עִמּ֖וֹ ’aḇ·rām way·ya·‘al mim·miṣ·ra·yim han·neḡ·bāh hū wə·’iš·tōw wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer- lōw wə·lō·wṭ ‘im·mōwWLC · 1

And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold.

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤁𐤆𐤄𐤁

וְאַבְרָ֖ם מְאֹ֑ד כָּבֵ֣ד בַּמִּקְנֶ֕ה בַּכֶּ֖סֶף וּבַזָּהָֽב׃ wə·’aḇ·rām mə·’ōḏ kā·ḇêḏ bam·miq·neh bak·ke·sep̄ ū·ḇaz·zā·hāḇWLC · 2

From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward Bethel, until he came to the place between vvv Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched…,

𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤎𐤏𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤕𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌

מִנֶּ֖גֶב וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ לְמַסָּעָ֔יו בֵּֽית־ אֵ֑ל וְעַד־ עַד־ הַמָּק֗וֹם בֵּ֥ין בֵּֽית־ אֵ֖ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעָֽי׃ אֲשֶׁר־ אָהֳלֹה בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה הָ֨יָה שָׁ֤ם min·ne·ḡeḇ way·yê·leḵ lə·mas·sā·‘āw bêṯ- ’êl wə·‘aḏ- ‘aḏ- ham·mā·qō·wm bên bêṯ- ’êl ū·ḇên hā·‘āy ’ă·šer- ʾå̄·ho·lōh bat·tə·ḥil·lāh hā·yāh šāmWLC · 3

to the site where he had built… the altar. And there Abram called… on the name of the LORD.

𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

אֶל־ מְקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁר־ עָ֥שָׂה בָּרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ שָׁ֖ם אַבְרָ֖ם וַיִּקְרָ֥א שָׁ֛ם בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃ ’el- mə·qō·wm ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh bā·ri·šō·nāh ham·miz·bê·aḥ šām ’aḇ·rām way·yiq·rā šām bə·šêm Yah·wehWLC · 4

Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤄𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤌

לְל֔וֹט הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ אֶת־ אַבְרָ֑ם וְגַם־ הָיָ֥ה צֹאן־ וּבָקָ֖ר וְאֹהָלִֽים׃ lə·lō·wṭ ha·hō·lêḵ ’eṯ- ’aḇ·rām wə·ḡam- hā·yāh ṣōn- ū·ḇā·qār wə·’ō·hā·lîmWLC · 5

But the land was unable to support [both of] them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable… to coexist…

𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤓𐤁 𐤓𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅

הָאָ֖רֶץ וְלֹא־ נָשָׂ֥א אֹתָ֛ם לָשֶׁ֣בֶת יַחְדָּ֑ו כִּֽי־ הָיָ֤ה רָ֔ב רְכוּשָׁם֙ יָֽכְל֖וּ וְלֹ֥א לָשֶׁ֥בֶת יַחְדָּֽו׃ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·lō- nā·śā ’ō·ṯām lā·še·ḇeṯ yaḥ·dāw kî- hā·yāh rāḇ rə·ḵū·šām yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō lā·še·ḇeṯ yaḥ·dāwWLC · 6

And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram… and the herdsmen of Lot… At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤆 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑

וַֽיְהִי־ רִ֗יב בֵּ֚ין רֹעֵ֣י אַבְרָ֔ם וּבֵ֖ין מִקְנֵֽה־ רֹעֵ֣י ל֑וֹט מִקְנֵה־ אָ֖ז וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י יֹשֵׁ֥ב בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ way·hî- rîḇ bên rō·‘ê ’aḇ·rām ū·ḇên miq·nêh- rō·‘ê lō·wṭ miq·nêh- ’āz wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî yō·šêḇ bā·’ā·reṣWLC · 7

So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention between you and me, or between… your herdsmen… and my herdsmen. After all,… we are kinsmen.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤍𐤀 𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤌

אַבְרָ֜ם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ ל֗וֹט נָ֨א תְהִ֤י אַל־ מְרִיבָה֙ בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֔יךָ וּבֵ֥ין רֹעַ֖י וּבֵ֣ין רֹעֶ֑יךָ כִּֽי־ אֲנָשִׁ֥ים אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ אַחִ֖ים ’aḇ·rām way·yō·mer ’el- lō·wṭ nā ṯə·hî ’al- mə·rî·ḇāh bê·nî ū·ḇê·ne·ḵā ū·ḇên rō·‘ay ū·ḇên rō·‘e·ḵā kî- ’ă·nā·šîm ’ă·nā·ḥə·nū ’a·ḥîmWLC · 8

Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤄

הֲלֹ֤א כָל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ נָ֖א הִפָּ֥רֶד מֵעָלָ֑י אִם־ הַשְּׂמֹ֣אל וְאֵימִ֔נָה וְאִם־ הַיָּמִ֖ין וְאַשְׂמְאִֽילָה׃ hă·lō ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā nā hip·pā·reḏ mê·‘ā·lāy ’im- haś·śə·mōl wə·’ê·mi·nāh wə·’im- hay·yā·mîn wə·’aś·mə·’î·lāhWLC · 9

Lot Proceeds toward Sodom

And Lot looked out… and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan,… all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤊𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤑𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤒𐤄 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤂𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤓𐤄

ל֣וֹט אֶת־ וַיִּשָּׂא־ עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ כִּכַּ֣ר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן כִּ֥י בֹּאֲכָ֖ה צֹֽעַר׃ מַשְׁקֶ֑ה כֻלָּ֖הּ כְּגַן־ יְהוָה֙ כְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִפְנֵ֣י׀ יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ שַׁחֵ֣ת סְדֹם֙ וְאֶת־ עֲמֹרָ֔ה lō·wṭ ’eṯ- way·yiś·śā- ‘ê·nāw way·yar ’eṯ- kāl- kik·kar hay·yar·dên kî bō·’ă·ḵāh ṣō·‘ar maš·qeh ḵul·lāh kə·ḡan- Yah·weh kə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’eṯ- ša·ḥêṯ sə·ḏōm wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·mō·rāhWLC · 10

So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself [and] set out toward the east. And [Abram and Lot] parted company…

𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤊𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤏 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅

ל֗וֹט אֵ֚ת וַיִּבְחַר־ כָּל־ כִּכַּ֣ר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן ל֣וֹ ל֖וֹט וַיִּסַּ֥ע מִקֶּ֑דֶם וַיִּפָּ֣רְד֔וּ מֵעַ֥ל אִ֖ישׁ אָחִֽיו׃ lō·wṭ ’êṯ way·yiḇ·ḥar- kāl- kik·kar hay·yar·dên lōw lō·wṭ way·yis·sa‘ miq·qe·ḏem way·yip·pā·rə·ḏū mê·‘al ’îš ’ā·ḥîwWLC · 11

Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched [his] tent toward Sodom.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤊𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤏𐤃 𐤎𐤃𐤌

אַבְרָ֖ם יָשַׁ֣ב בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ כְּנָ֑עַן וְל֗וֹט יָשַׁב֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י הַכִּכָּ֔ר וַיֶּאֱהַ֖ל עַד־ סְדֹֽם׃ ’aḇ·rām yā·šaḇ bə·’e·reṣ- kə·nā·‘an wə·lō·wṭ yā·šaḇ bə·‘ā·rê hak·kik·kār way·ye·’ĕ·hal ‘aḏ- sə·ḏōmWLC · 12

But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י סְדֹ֔ם רָעִ֖ים וְחַטָּאִ֑ים מְאֹֽד׃ לַיהוָ֖ה wə·’an·šê sə·ḏōm rā·‘îm wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm mə·’ōḏ Yah·wehWLC · 13

God Renews the Promise to Abram

After Lot had departed…, the LORD said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,

𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤍𐤀 𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄

אַחֲרֵי֙ ל֣וֹט הִפָּֽרֶד־ מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ וַֽיהוָ֞ה אָמַ֣ר אֶל־ אַבְרָ֗ם נָ֤א שָׂ֣א עֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ מִן־ הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֣ה שָׁ֑ם וּרְאֵ֔ה צָפֹ֥נָה וָנֶ֖גְבָּה וָקֵ֥דְמָה וָיָֽמָּה׃ ’a·ḥă·rê lō·wṭ hip·pā·reḏ- mê·‘im·mōw Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’el- ’aḇ·rām nā śā ‘ê·ne·ḵā min- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh šām ū·rə·’êh ṣā·p̄ō·nāh wā·neḡ·bāh wā·qê·ḏə·māh wā·yām·māhWLC · 14

for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever…

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

כִּ֧י אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאָ֛רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה לְךָ֣ וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֖ עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ kî ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh rō·’eh ’et·tə·nen·nāh lə·ḵā ū·lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 15

I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.

𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤂𐤌 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤄

וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י אֶֽת־ זַרְעֲךָ֖ כַּעֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֑רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ אִם־ אִ֗ישׁ יוּכַ֣ל לִמְנוֹת֙ אֶת־ עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ גַּֽם־ זַרְעֲךָ֖ יִמָּנֶֽה׃ wə·śam·tî ’eṯ- zar·‘ă·ḵā ka·‘ă·p̄ar hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’im- ’îš yū·ḵal lim·nō·wṯ ’eṯ- ‘ă·p̄ar hā·’ā·reṣ gam- zar·‘ă·ḵā yim·mā·nehWLC · 16

Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”

𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊

ק֚וּם הִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ בָּאָ֔רֶץ לְאָרְכָּ֖הּ וּלְרָחְבָּ֑הּ כִּ֥י אֶתְּנֶֽנָּה׃ לְךָ֖ qūm hiṯ·hal·lêḵ bā·’ā·reṣ lə·’ā·rə·kāh ū·lə·rā·ḥə·bāh kî ’et·tə·nen·nāh lə·ḵāWLC · 17

So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤐

אַבְרָ֗ם וַיֶּאֱהַ֣ל וַיָּבֹ֛א וַיֵּ֛שֶׁב בְּאֵלֹנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן שָׁ֥ם וַיִּֽבֶן־ מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָֽה׃פ ’aḇ·rām way·ye·’ĕ·hal way·yā·ḇō way·yê·šeḇ bə·’ê·lō·nê mam·rê ’ă·šer bə·ḥeḇ·rō·wn šām way·yi·ḇen- miz·bê·aḥ Yah·wehWLC · 18
