Chapter 18

The Three Visitors

Then the LORD appeared to [Abraham] by the Oaks of Mamre in the heat of the day, while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤇𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋

יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ בְּאֵלֹנֵ֖י מַמְרֵ֑א כְּחֹ֥ם הַיּֽוֹם׃ וְה֛וּא יֹשֵׁ֥ב פֶּֽתַח־ הָאֹ֖הֶל Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’ê·lāw bə·’ê·lō·nê mam·rê kə·ḥōm hay·yō·wm wə·hū yō·šêḇ pe·ṯaḥ- hā·’ō·helWLC · 1

And [Abraham] looked up… and saw… three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄

וַיִּשָּׂ֤א עֵינָיו֙ וַיַּ֔רְא וְהִנֵּה֙ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים נִצָּבִ֖ים עָלָ֑יו וַיַּ֗רְא וַיָּ֤רָץ מִפֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֔הֶל לִקְרָאתָם֙ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ אָֽרְצָה׃ way·yiś·śā ‘ê·nāw way·yar wə·hin·nêh šə·lō·šāh ’ă·nā·šîm niṣ·ṣā·ḇîm ‘ā·lāw way·yar way·yā·rāṣ mip·pe·ṯaḥ hā·’ō·hel liq·rā·ṯām way·yiš·ta·ḥū ’ā·rə·ṣāhWLC · 2

“My lord,” said [Abraham], “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not… pass… your servant {by}.

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤊

אֲדֹנָ֗י וַיֹּאמַ֑ר אִם־ מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ נָ֨א אַל־ נָ֥א תַעֲבֹ֖ר מֵעַ֥ל עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yō·mar ’im- mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā nā ’al- nā ṯa·‘ă·ḇōr mê·‘al ‘aḇ·de·ḵāWLC · 3

Let a little water be brought,… that you may wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.

𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤑𐤅 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤑

מְעַט־ מַ֔יִם יֻקַּֽח־ נָ֣א וְרַחֲצ֖וּ רַגְלֵיכֶ֑ם וְהִֽשָּׁעֲנ֖וּ תַּ֥חַת הָעֵֽץ׃ mə·‘aṭ- ma·yim yuq·qaḥ- nā wə·ra·ḥă·ṣū raḡ·lê·ḵem wə·hiš·šā·‘ă·nū ta·ḥaṯ hā·‘êṣWLC · 4

And I will bring a bit of bread so that you may refresh yourselves. This is why… you have passed your servant’s way. After that, you may continue on your way…” “Yes,” they replied, “you may do as you have said.”

𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤇𐤄 𐤐𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤎𐤏𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕

וְאֶקְחָ֨ה פַת־ לֶ֜חֶם וְסַעֲד֤וּ לִבְּכֶם֙ כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֥ן תַּעֲבֹ֔רוּ עַבְדְּכֶ֑ם אַחַ֣ר עֲבַרְתֶּ֖ם עַֽל־ כֵּ֥ן וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ wə·’eq·ḥāh p̄aṯ- le·ḥem wə·sa·‘ă·ḏū lib·bə·ḵem kî- ‘al- kên ta·‘ă·ḇō·rū ‘aḇ·də·ḵem ’a·ḥar ‘ă·ḇar·tem ‘al- kên way·yō·mə·rū ta·‘ă·śeh ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tāWLC · 5

So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick! Prepare three seahs of fine flour, knead it, and bake some bread.”

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤎𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤋𐤕 𐤒𐤌𐤇 𐤋𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉 𐤏𐤂𐤅𐤕

אַבְרָהָ֛ם וַיְמַהֵ֧ר הָאֹ֖הֱלָה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אֶל־ שָׂרָ֑ה מַהֲרִ֞י שְׁלֹ֤שׁ סְאִים֙ סֹ֔לֶת קֶ֣מַח ל֖וּשִׁי וַעֲשִׂ֥י עֻגֽוֹת׃ ’aḇ·rā·hām way·ma·hêr hā·’ō·hĕ·lāh way·yō·mer ’el- śā·rāh ma·hă·rî šə·lōš sə·’îm sō·leṯ qe·maḥ lū·šî wa·‘ă·śî ‘u·ḡō·wṯWLC · 6

Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the herd, selected a tender and choice calf…, and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤅

אַבְרָהָ֑ם רָ֣ץ וְאֶל־ הַבָּקָ֖ר וַיִּקַּ֨ח רַ֤ךְ וָטוֹב֙ בֶּן־ בָּקָ֜ר וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֶל־ הַנַּ֔עַר וַיְמַהֵ֖ר לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת אֹתֽוֹ׃ ’aḇ·rā·hām rāṣ wə·’el- hab·bā·qār way·yiq·qaḥ raḵ wā·ṭō·wḇ ben- bā·qār way·yit·tên ’el- han·na·‘ar way·ma·hêr la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’ō·ṯōwWLC · 7

Then Abraham brought curds and milk and the calf… that had been prepared, and he set them before the men and stood by them under the tree as they ate.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤇𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅

וַיִּקַּ֨ח חֶמְאָ֜ה וְחָלָ֗ב וּבֶן־ הַבָּקָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וְהֽוּא־ עֹמֵ֧ד עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם תַּ֥חַת הָעֵ֖ץ וַיֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃ way·yiq·qaḥ ḥem·’āh wə·ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḇen- hab·bā·qār ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh way·yit·tên lip̄·nê·hem wə·hū- ‘ō·mêḏ ‘ă·lê·hem ta·ḥaṯ hā·‘êṣ way·yō·ḵê·lūWLC · 8

Sarah Laughs at the Promise

“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked… “There, in the tent,” he replied.

𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

אַיֵּ֖ה אִשְׁתֶּ֑ךָ שָׂרָ֣ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵׄלָׄ֔יׄוׄ הִנֵּ֥ה בָאֹֽהֶל׃ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר ’ay·yêh ’iš·te·ḵā śā·rāh way·yō·mə·rū ʾē·lå̄w hin·nêh ḇā·’ō·hel way·yō·merWLC · 9

Then the LORD said, “I will surely return… to you at this time next year…,… and your wife Sarah will have a son!” Now Sarah… was behind him, listening at the entrance to the tent.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤏𐤕 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר שׁ֣וֹב אָשׁ֤וּב אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ כָּעֵ֣ת חַיָּ֔ה וְהִנֵּה־ אִשְׁתֶּ֑ךָ לְשָׂרָ֣ה בֵ֖ן וְשָׂרָ֥ה וְה֥וּא אַחֲרָֽיו׃ שֹׁמַ֛עַת פֶּ֥תַח הָאֹ֖הֶל way·yō·mer šō·wḇ ’ā·šūḇ ’ê·le·ḵā kā·‘êṯ ḥay·yāh wə·hin·nêh- ’iš·te·ḵā lə·śā·rāh ḇên wə·śā·rāh wə·hū ’a·ḥă·rāw šō·ma·‘aṯ pe·ṯaḥ hā·’ō·helWLC · 10

And Abraham and Sarah were already old and well along in years; Sarah had passed… the age of childbearing…

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤇𐤃𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤊𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌

וְאַבְרָהָ֤ם וְשָׂרָה֙ זְקֵנִ֔ים בָּאִ֖ים בַּיָּמִ֑ים לְשָׂרָ֔ה חָדַל֙ לִהְי֣וֹת אֹ֖רַח כַּנָּשִֽׁים׃ wə·’aḇ·rā·hām wə·śā·rāh zə·qê·nîm bā·’îm bay·yā·mîm lə·śā·rāh ḥā·ḏal lih·yō·wṯ ’ō·raḥ kan·nā·šîmWLC · 11

So [she] laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have… this pleasure?”

𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤃𐤍𐤄

שָׂרָ֖ה וַתִּצְחַ֥ק בְּקִרְבָּ֣הּ לֵאמֹ֑ר אַחֲרֵ֤י בְלֹתִי֙ וַֽאדֹנִ֖י זָקֵֽן׃ הָֽיְתָה־ לִּ֣י עֶדְנָ֔ה śā·rāh wat·tiṣ·ḥaq bə·qir·bāh lê·mōr ’a·ḥă·rê ḇə·lō·ṯî wa·ḏō·nî zā·qên hā·yə·ṯāh- lî ‘eḏ·nāhWLC · 12

And the LORD… asked Abraham, “Why… did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really… bear a child when I am old?’

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤑𐤇𐤒𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤐 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤕𐤉

יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֑ם לָ֣מָּה זֶּה֩ שָׂרָ֜ה צָחֲקָ֨ה לֵאמֹ֗ר הַאַ֥ף אֻמְנָ֛ם אֵלֵ֖ד וַאֲנִ֥י זָקַֽנְתִּי׃ Yah·weh ’el- way·yō·mer ’aḇ·rā·hām lām·māh zeh śā·rāh ṣā·ḥă·qāh lê·mōr ha·’ap̄ ’um·nām ’ê·lêḏ wa·’ă·nî zā·qan·tîWLC · 13

14

Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you— in about a year…— and Sarah will have a son.”

דָּבָ֑ר הֲיִפָּלֵ֥א מֵיְהוָ֖ה לַמּוֹעֵ֞ד אָשׁ֥וּב אֵלֶ֛יךָ כָּעֵ֥ת חַיָּ֖ה וּלְשָׂרָ֥ה בֵֽן׃ dā·ḇār hă·yip·pā·lê Yah·weh lam·mō·w·‘êḏ ’ā·šūḇ ’ê·le·ḵā kā·‘êṯ ḥay·yāh ū·lə·śā·rāh ḇênWLC · 14

But Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did not laugh.” “No,” replied [the LORD], “but you did laugh.”

𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤇𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤇𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤑𐤇𐤒𐤕

שָׂרָ֧ה׀ יָרֵ֑אָה כִּ֣י׀ וַתְּכַחֵ֨שׁ לֵאמֹ֛ר לֹ֥א צָחַ֖קְתִּי לֹ֖א וַיֹּ֥אמֶר׀ כִּ֥י צָחָֽקְתְּ׃ śā·rāh yā·rê·’āh kî wat·tə·ḵa·ḥêš lê·mōr lō ṣā·ḥaq·tî lō way·yō·mer kî ṣā·ḥā·qətWLC · 15

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

When [the men] got up to leave, [they] looked out over… Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them off.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤌

וַיָּקֻ֤מוּ מִשָּׁם֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַיַּשְׁקִ֖פוּ עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י סְדֹ֑ם וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם הֹלֵ֥ךְ עִמָּ֖ם לְשַׁלְּחָֽם׃ way·yā·qu·mū miš·šām hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yaš·qi·p̄ū ‘al- pə·nê sə·ḏōm wə·’aḇ·rā·hām hō·lêḵ ‘im·mām lə·šal·lə·ḥāmWLC · 16

And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤄

וַֽיהֹוָ֖ה אָמָ֑ר אֲנִי֙ הַֽמְכַסֶּ֤ה מֵֽאַבְרָהָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֲנִ֥י עֹשֶֽׂה׃ Yah·weh ’ā·mār ’ă·nî ham·ḵas·seh mê·’aḇ·rā·hām ’ă·šer ’ă·nî ‘ō·śehWLC · 17

18

Abraham will surely become… a great and powerful nation, and through him all the nations of the earth {will} be blessed.

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅

וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם הָי֧וֹ יִֽהְיֶ֛ה גָּד֖וֹל וְעָצ֑וּם לְג֥וֹי ב֔וֹ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְנִ֨בְרְכוּ wə·’aḇ·rā·hām hā·yōw yih·yeh gā·ḏō·wl wə·‘ā·ṣūm lə·ḡō·w ḇōw kōl gō·w·yê hā·’ā·reṣ wə·niḇ·rə·ḵūWLC · 18

19

For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised -.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

כִּ֣י יְדַעְתִּ֗יו לְמַעַן֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְצַוֶּ֜ה אֶת־ בָּנָ֤יו וְאֶת־ בֵּיתוֹ֙ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְשָֽׁמְרוּ֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֔ה לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת צְדָקָ֖ה וּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט לְמַ֗עַן יְהוָה֙ הָבִ֤יא עַל־ אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֖ר עָלָֽיו׃ kî yə·ḏa‘·tîw lə·ma·‘an ’ă·šer yə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ- bā·nāw wə·’eṯ- bê·ṯōw ’a·ḥă·rāw wə·šā·mə·rū de·reḵ Yah·weh la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ṣə·ḏā·qāh ū·miš·pāṭ lə·ma·‘an Yah·weh hā·ḇî ‘al- ’aḇ·rā·hām ’êṯ ’ă·šer- dib·ber ‘ā·lāwWLC · 19

Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great. Because their sin is so grievous,

יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר זַעֲקַ֛ת סְדֹ֥ם וַעֲמֹרָ֖ה רָ֑בָּה כִּי־ וְחַ֨טָּאתָ֔ם כִּ֥י מְאֹֽד׃ כָבְדָ֖ה Yah·weh way·yō·mer za·‘ă·qaṯ sə·ḏōm wa·‘ă·mō·rāh rāb·bāh kî- wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯām kî mə·’ōḏ ḵā·ḇə·ḏāhWLC · 20

I will go down… to see if their actions fully justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.”

אֵֽרֲדָה־ נָּ֣א וְאֶרְאֶ֔ה עָשׂ֣וּ׀ כָּלָ֑ה הַכְּצַעֲקָתָ֛הּ הַבָּ֥אָה אֵלַ֖י וְאִם־ לֹ֖א אֵדָֽעָה׃ ’ê·ră·ḏāh- nā wə·’er·’eh ‘ā·śū kā·lāh hak·kə·ṣa·‘ă·qā·ṯāh hab·bā·’āh ’ê·lay wə·’im- lō ’ê·ḏā·‘āhWLC · 21

And the [two] men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.

הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַיִּפְנ֤וּ מִשָּׁם֙ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ סְדֹ֑מָה וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם עוֹדֶ֥נּוּ עֹמֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yip̄·nū miš·šām way·yê·lə·ḵū sə·ḏō·māh wə·’aḇ·rā·hām ‘ō·w·ḏen·nū ‘ō·mêḏ lip̄·nê Yah·wehWLC · 22

Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤐 𐤕𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤏𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏

אַבְרָהָ֖ם וַיִּגַּ֥שׁ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַאַ֣ף תִּסְפֶּ֔ה צַדִּ֖יק עִם־ רָשָֽׁע׃ ’aḇ·rā·hām way·yig·gaš way·yō·mar ha·’ap̄ tis·peh ṣad·dîq ‘im- rā·šā‘WLC · 23

What if there are fifty righteous ones in the city? Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?

𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤔 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤐 𐤕𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤄

אוּלַ֥י יֵ֛שׁ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים צַדִּיקִ֖ם בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעִ֑יר הַאַ֤ף תִּסְפֶּה֙ וְלֹא־ תִשָּׂ֣א לַמָּק֔וֹם לְמַ֛עַן חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים הַצַּדִּיקִ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּקִרְבָּֽהּ׃ ’ū·lay yêš ḥă·miš·šîm ṣad·dî·qim bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘îr ha·’ap̄ tis·peh wə·lō- ṯiś·śā lam·mā·qō·wm lə·ma·‘an ḥă·miš·šîm haṣ·ṣad·dî·qim ’ă·šer bə·qir·bāhWLC · 24

Far be it from You to do such a thing— to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”

𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤏𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤊𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤊𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

חָלִ֨לָה לְּךָ֜ מֵעֲשֹׂ֣ת׀ הַזֶּ֗ה כַּדָּבָ֣ר לְהָמִ֤ית צַדִּיק֙ עִם־ רָשָׁ֔ע כַצַּדִּ֖יק כָּרָשָׁ֑ע וְהָיָ֥ה חָלִ֣לָה לָּ֔ךְ לֹ֥א הֲשֹׁפֵט֙ כָּל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ ḥā·li·lāh lə·ḵā mê·‘ă·śōṯ haz·zeh kad·dā·ḇār lə·hā·mîṯ ṣad·dîq ‘im- rā·šā‘ ḵaṣ·ṣad·dîq kā·rā·šā‘ wə·hā·yāh ḥā·li·lāh lāḵ lō hă·šō·p̄êṭ kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ya·‘ă·śeh miš·pāṭWLC · 25

So the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous ones within the city of Sodom, on their account I will spare the whole place.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌

יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אִם־ אֶמְצָ֥א חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים צַדִּיקִ֖ם בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעִ֑יר בִסְדֹ֛ם בַּעֲבוּרָֽם׃ וְנָשָׂ֥אתִי לְכָל־ הַמָּק֖וֹם Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’im- ’em·ṣā ḥă·miš·šîm ṣad·dî·qim bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘îr ḇis·ḏōm ba·‘ă·ḇū·rām wə·nā·śā·ṯî lə·ḵāl ham·mā·qō·wmWLC · 26

Then Abraham vvv answered, “Now that… I have ventured to speak to the Lord— though I am but dust and ashes—

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤓

אַבְרָהָ֖ם וַיֹּאמַ֑ר וַיַּ֥עַן הִנֵּה־ נָ֤א הוֹאַ֙לְתִּי֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ אֲדֹנָ֔י וְאָנֹכִ֖י עָפָ֥ר וָאֵֽפֶר׃ ’aḇ·rā·hām way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an hin·nêh- nā hō·w·’al·tî lə·ḏab·bêr ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nāy wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ā·p̄ār wā·’ê·p̄erWLC · 27

suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?” He replied, “If I find forty-five… there, I will not destroy [it].”

𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤎𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕

א֠וּלַי חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים הַצַּדִּיקִם֙ יַחְסְר֞וּן חֲמִשָּׁ֔ה הֲתַשְׁחִ֥ית כָּל־ הָעִ֑יר בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה אֶת־ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אִם־ אֶמְצָ֣א אַרְבָּעִ֖ים וַחֲמִשָּֽׁה׃ שָׁ֔ם לֹ֣א אַשְׁחִ֔ית ’ū·lay ḥă·miš·šîm haṣ·ṣad·dî·qim yaḥ·sə·rūn ḥă·miš·šāh hă·ṯaš·ḥîṯ kāl- hā·‘îr ba·ḥă·miš·šāh ’eṯ- way·yō·mer ’im- ’em·ṣā ’ar·bā·‘îm wa·ḥă·miš·šāh šām lō ’aš·ḥîṯWLC · 28

Once again… [Abraham] spoke to [the LORD], “Suppose forty… are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄

וַיֹּ֨סֶף ע֜וֹד לְדַבֵּ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ אוּלַ֛י אַרְבָּעִ֑ים וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יִמָּצְא֥וּן שָׁ֖ם וַיֹּאמַ֔ר בַּעֲב֖וּר הָאַרְבָּעִֽים׃ לֹ֣א אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֔ה way·yō·sep̄ ‘ō·wḏ lə·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lāw ’ū·lay ’ar·bā·‘îm way·yō·mer yim·mā·ṣə·’ūn šām way·yō·mar ba·‘ă·ḇūr hā·’ar·bā·‘îm lō ’e·‘ĕ·śehWLC · 29

Then [Abraham] said, “May the Lord not… be angry, but let me speak [further]. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄

וַ֠יֹּאמֶר לַֽאדֹנָי֙ אַל־ נָ֞א יִ֤חַר וַאֲדַבֵּ֔רָה אוּלַ֛י שְׁלֹשִׁ֑ים יִמָּצְא֥וּן שָׁ֖ם וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אִם־ אֶמְצָ֥א שְׁלֹשִֽׁים׃ שָׁ֖ם לֹ֣א אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֔ה way·yō·mer la·ḏō·nāy ’al- nā yi·ḥar wa·’ă·ḏab·bê·rāh ’ū·lay šə·lō·šîm yim·mā·ṣə·’ūn šām way·yō·mer ’im- ’em·ṣā šə·lō·šîm šām lō ’e·‘ĕ·śehWLC · 30

And [Abraham] said, “Now that… I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will not destroy [it].”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּֽה־ נָ֤א הוֹאַ֙לְתִּי֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ אֲדֹנָ֔י אוּלַ֛י עֶשְׂרִ֑ים יִמָּצְא֥וּן שָׁ֖ם וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בַּעֲב֖וּר הָֽעֶשְׂרִֽים׃ לֹ֣א אַשְׁחִ֔ית way·yō·mer hin·nêh- nā hō·w·’al·tî lə·ḏab·bêr ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ū·lay ‘eś·rîm yim·mā·ṣə·’ūn šām way·yō·mer ba·‘ă·ḇūr hā·‘eś·rîm lō ’aš·ḥîṯWLC · 31

Finally, [Abraham] said, “May the Lord not… be angry, but let me speak… once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy [it].”

וַ֠יֹּאמֶר לַֽאדֹנָי֙ אַל־ נָ֞א יִ֤חַר וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה אַךְ־ הַפַּ֔עַם אוּלַ֛י עֲשָׂרָ֑ה יִמָּצְא֥וּן שָׁ֖ם וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בַּעֲב֖וּר הָעֲשָׂרָֽה׃ לֹ֣א אַשְׁחִ֔ית way·yō·mer la·ḏō·nāy ’al- nā yi·ḥar wa·’ă·ḏab·bə·rāh ’aḵ- hap·pa·‘am ’ū·lay ‘ă·śā·rāh yim·mā·ṣə·’ūn šām way·yō·mer ba·‘ă·ḇūr hā·‘ă·śā·rāh lō ’aš·ḥîṯWLC · 32

When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה כִּלָּ֔ה לְדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־ אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ וְאַבְרָהָ֖ם שָׁ֥ב לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh kil·lāh lə·ḏab·bêr ’el- ’aḇ·rā·hām way·yê·leḵ wə·’aḇ·rā·hām šāḇ lim·qō·mōwWLC · 33
