Chapter 2

The Seventh Day

1

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤌

הַשָּׁמַ֥יִם וְהָאָ֖רֶץ וַיְכֻלּ֛וּ וְכָל־ צְבָאָֽם׃ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·hā·’ā·reṣ way·ḵul·lū wə·ḵāl ṣə·ḇā·’āmWLC · 1

And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on [that] day He rested from all His work…

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י בַּיּ֣וֹם אֱלֹהִים֙ וַיְכַ֤ל מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיִּשְׁבֹּת֙ מִכָּל־ מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ḵal mə·laḵ·tōw ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm way·yiš·bōṯ mik·kāl mə·laḵ·tōw ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāhWLC · 2

Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on [that day] He rested from all the work of creation that [He] had accomplished.

אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־ וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י י֣וֹם וַיְקַדֵּ֖שׁ אֹת֑וֹ כִּ֣י ב֤וֹ שָׁבַת֙ מִכָּל־ מְלַאכְתּ֔וֹ בָּרָ֥א אֲשֶׁר־ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃פ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·ḇā·reḵ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î yō·wm way·qad·dêš ’ō·ṯōw kî ḇōw šā·ḇaṯ mik·kāl mə·laḵ·tōw bā·rā ’ă·šer- ’ĕ·lō·hîm la·‘ă·śō·wṯWLC · 3

Man and Woman in the Garden

This [is] the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made [them]…

𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

אֵ֣לֶּה תוֹלְד֧וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם וְהָאָ֖רֶץ בְּהִבָּֽרְאָ֑ם בְּי֗וֹם יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים עֲשׂ֛וֹת אֶ֥רֶץ וְשָׁמָֽיִם׃ ’êl·leh ṯō·wl·ḏō·wṯ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·hā·’ā·reṣ bə·hib·bā·rə·’ām bə·yō·wm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ă·śō·wṯ ’e·reṣ wə·šā·mā·yimWLC · 4

Now [no] shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not [yet] sent rain upon the earth, and [there was] no man to cultivate the ground.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤉𐤇 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄

וְכֹ֣ל׀ שִׂ֣יחַ הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה טֶ֚רֶם יִֽהְיֶ֣ה בָאָ֔רֶץ וְכָל־ עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה טֶ֣רֶם יִצְמָ֑ח כִּי֩ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהִים֙ לֹ֨א הִמְטִ֜יר עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אַ֔יִן וְאָדָ֣ם לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־ הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ wə·ḵōl śî·aḥ haś·śā·ḏeh ṭe·rem yih·yeh ḇā·’ā·reṣ wə·ḵāl ‘ê·śeḇ haś·śā·ḏeh ṭe·rem yiṣ·māḥ kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm lō him·ṭîr ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ ’a·yin wə·’ā·ḏām la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- hā·’ă·ḏā·māhWLC · 5

But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

𐤅𐤀𐤃 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄

וְאֵ֖ד יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה מִן־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהִשְׁקָ֖ה אֶֽת־ כָּל־ פְּנֵֽי־ הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ wə·’êḏ ya·‘ă·leh min- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hiš·qāh ’eṯ- kāl- pə·nê- hā·’ă·ḏā·māhWLC · 6

Then the LORD God formed man [from] the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤇 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤕 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔

יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת־ וַיִּיצֶר֩ הָֽאָדָ֗ם עָפָר֙ מִן־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה וַיִּפַּ֥ח נִשְׁמַ֣ת חַיִּ֑ים בְּאַפָּ֖יו הָֽאָדָ֖ם וַֽיְהִ֥י חַיָּֽה׃ לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yî·ṣer hā·’ā·ḏām ‘ā·p̄ār min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh way·yip·paḥ niš·maṯ ḥay·yîm bə·’ap·pāw hā·’ā·ḏām way·hî ḥay·yāh lə·ne·p̄ešWLC · 7

And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤈𐤏 𐤂𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤓

יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים וַיִּטַּ֞ע גַּן־ בְעֵ֖דֶן מִקֶּ֑דֶם שָׁ֔ם אֶת־ וַיָּ֣שֶׂם הָֽאָדָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָצָֽר׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiṭ·ṭa‘ gan- bə·‘ê·ḏen miq·qe·ḏem šām ’eṯ- way·yā·śem hā·’ā·ḏām ’ă·šer yā·ṣārWLC · 8

Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden [were] the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑 𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤓𐤏

מִן־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהִים֙ וַיַּצְמַ֞ח כָּל־ עֵ֛ץ נֶחְמָ֥ד לְמַרְאֶ֖ה וְט֣וֹב לְמַאֲכָ֑ל בְּת֣וֹךְ הַגָּ֔ן וְעֵ֤ץ הַֽחַיִּים֙ וְעֵ֕ץ הַדַּ֖עַת ט֥וֹב וָרָֽע׃ min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yaṣ·maḥ kāl- ‘êṣ neḥ·māḏ lə·mar·’eh wə·ṭō·wḇ lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl bə·ṯō·wḵ hag·gān wə·‘êṣ ha·ḥay·yîm wə·‘êṣ had·da·‘aṯ ṭō·wḇ wā·rā‘WLC · 9

Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into… four headwaters:

𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤏𐤃𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤐𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌

וְנָהָר֙ יֹצֵ֣א מֵעֵ֔דֶן לְהַשְׁק֖וֹת אֶת־ הַגָּ֑ן וּמִשָּׁם֙ יִפָּרֵ֔ד וְהָיָ֖ה לְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה רָאשִֽׁים׃ wə·nå̄·hå̄r yō·ṣê mê·‘ê·ḏen lə·haš·qō·wṯ ’eṯ- hag·gān ū·miš·šām yip·pā·rêḏ wə·hā·yāh lə·’ar·bā·‘āh rā·šîmWLC · 10

The name of the first [river] [is] the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there [is] gold.

𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤐𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤎𐤁𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁

שֵׁ֥ם הָֽאֶחָ֖ד פִּישׁ֑וֹן ה֣וּא הַסֹּבֵ֗ב אֵ֚ת כָּל־ אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽחֲוִילָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁ֖ם הַזָּהָֽב׃ šêm hā·’e·ḥāḏ pî·šō·wn hū has·sō·ḇêḇ ’êṯ kāl- ’e·reṣ ha·ḥă·wî·lāh ’ă·šer- šām haz·zā·hāḇWLC · 11

And the gold of that land [is] pure, [and] bdellium vvv and onyx [are found] there.

𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤌

וּֽזֲהַ֛ב הַהִ֖וא הָאָ֥רֶץ ט֑וֹב הַבְּדֹ֖לַח וְאֶ֥בֶן הַשֹּֽׁהַם׃ שָׁ֥ם ū·ză·haḇ ha·hi·w hā·’ā·reṣ ṭō·wḇ hab·bə·ḏō·laḥ wə·’e·ḇen haš·šō·ham šāmWLC · 12

13

The name of the second river [is] the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.

𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤂𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤎𐤅𐤁𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤅𐤔

וְשֵֽׁם־ הַשֵּׁנִ֖י הַנָּהָ֥ר גִּיח֑וֹן ה֣וּא הַסּוֹבֵ֔ב אֵ֖ת כָּל־ אֶ֥רֶץ כּֽוּשׁ׃ wə·šêm- haš·šê·nî han·nā·hār gî·ḥō·wn hū has·sō·w·ḇêḇ ’êṯ kāl- ’e·reṣ kūšWLC · 13

The name of the third river [is] the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river [is the] Euphrates.

𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤇𐤃𐤒𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤐𐤓𐤕

וְשֵׁ֨ם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ הַנָּהָ֤ר חִדֶּ֔קֶל ה֥וּא הַֽהֹלֵ֖ךְ קִדְמַ֣ת אַשּׁ֑וּר הָֽרְבִיעִ֖י וְהַנָּהָ֥ר ה֥וּא פְרָֽת׃ wə·šêm haš·šə·lî·šî han·nā·hār ḥid·de·qel hū ha·hō·lêḵ qiḏ·maṯ ’aš·šūr hā·rə·ḇî·‘î wə·han·nā·hār hū p̄ə·rāṯWLC · 14

Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤍 𐤏𐤃𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤄

יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֛ח הָֽאָדָ֑ם וַיַּנִּחֵ֣הוּ בְגַן־ עֵ֔דֶן לְעָבְדָ֖הּ וּלְשָׁמְרָֽהּ׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ hā·’ā·ḏām way·yan·ni·ḥê·hū ḇə·ḡan- ‘ê·ḏen lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏāh ū·lə·šā·mə·rāhWLC · 15

And the LORD God… commanded [him] -, “You may eat freely… from every tree of the garden,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤂𐤍

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים עַל־ וַיְצַו֙ הָֽאָדָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אָכֹ֥ל תֹּאכֵֽל׃ מִכֹּ֥ל עֵֽץ־ הַגָּ֖ן Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘al- way·ṣaw hā·’ā·ḏām lê·mōr ’ā·ḵōl tō·ḵêl mik·kōl ‘êṣ- hag·gānWLC · 16

17

but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die…”

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤓𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕

לֹ֥א תֹאכַ֖ל מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וּמֵעֵ֗ץ הַדַּ֙עַת֙ ט֣וֹב וָרָ֔ע כִּ֗י בְּי֛וֹם אֲכָלְךָ֥ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מ֥וֹת תָּמֽוּת׃ lō ṯō·ḵal mim·men·nū ū·mê·‘êṣ had·da·‘aṯ ṭō·wḇ wā·rā‘ kî bə·yō·wm ’ă·ḵā·lə·ḵā mim·men·nū mō·wṯ tā·mūṯWLC · 17

The LORD God also said, “[It is] not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤆𐤓

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹא־ ט֛וֹב הָֽאָדָ֖ם הֱי֥וֹת לְבַדּ֑וֹ אֶֽעֱשֶׂהּ־ לּ֥וֹ כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ עֵ֖זֶר Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer lō- ṭō·wḇ hā·’ā·ḏām hĕ·yō·wṯ lə·ḇad·dōw ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lō kə·neḡ·dōw ‘ê·zerWLC · 18

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought [them] to the man to see what he would name… each one -. And whatever the man called… each living creature, that [was] its name.

𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤅

מִן־ הָֽאֲדָמָ֗ה יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֜ים וַיִּצֶר֩ כָּל־ חַיַּ֤ת הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־ ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיָּבֵא֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אָדָ֔ם לִרְא֖וֹת מַה־ יִּקְרָא־ ל֑וֹ וְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָֽאָדָ֛ם יִקְרָא־ ל֧וֹ חַיָּ֖ה נֶ֥פֶשׁ ה֥וּא שְׁמֽוֹ׃ min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yi·ṣer kāl- ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh wə·’êṯ kāl- ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim way·yā·ḇê ’el- hā·’ā·ḏām lir·’ō·wṯ mah- yiq·rā- lōw wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer hā·’ā·ḏām yiq·rā- lōw ḥay·yāh ne·p̄eš hū šə·mōwWLC · 19

The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

הָֽאָדָ֜ם וַיִּקְרָ֨א שֵׁמ֗וֹת לְכָל־ הַבְּהֵמָה֙ וּלְע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וּלְכֹ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וּלְאָדָ֕ם לֹֽא־ כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ עֵ֖זֶר מָצָ֥א hā·’ā·ḏām way·yiq·rā šê·mō·wṯ lə·ḵāl hab·bə·hê·māh ū·lə·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim ū·lə·ḵōl ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh ū·lə·’ā·ḏām lō- kə·neḡ·dōw ‘ê·zer mā·ṣāWLC · 20

So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of [the man’s] ribs and closed up the area with flesh.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤓𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤔𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤓

יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ וַיַּפֵּל֩ הָאָדָ֖ם עַל־ תַּרְדֵּמָ֛ה וַיִּישָׁ֑ן וַיִּקַּ֗ח אַחַת֙ מִצַּלְעֹתָ֔יו וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר תַּחְתֶּֽנָּה׃ בָּשָׂ֖ר Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yap·pêl hā·’ā·ḏām ‘al- tar·dê·māh way·yî·šān way·yiq·qaḥ ’a·ḥaṯ miṣ·ṣal·‘ō·ṯāw way·yis·gōr taḥ·ten·nāh bā·śārWLC · 21

And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to [him].

𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌

הַצֵּלָ֛ע אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ אֶֽת־ לָקַ֥ח מִן־ הָֽאָדָ֖ם וַיִּבֶן֩ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיְבִאֶ֖הָ אֶל־ הָֽאָדָֽם׃ haṣ·ṣê·lā‘ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- lā·qaḥ min- hā·’ā·ḏām way·yi·ḇen lə·’iš·šāh way·ḇi·’e·hā ’el- hā·’ā·ḏāmWLC · 22

And the man said: “This [is] now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”

𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤄

הָֽאָדָם֒ וַיֹּאמֶר֮ זֹ֣את הַפַּ֗עַם עֶ֚צֶם מֵֽעֲצָמַ֔י וּבָשָׂ֖ר מִבְּשָׂרִ֑י לְזֹאת֙ יִקָּרֵ֣א אִשָּׁ֔ה כִּ֥י מֵאִ֖ישׁ זֹּֽאת׃ לֻֽקֳחָה־ hā·’ā·ḏām way·yō·mer zōṯ hap·pa·‘am ‘e·ṣem mê·‘ă·ṣā·may ū·ḇā·śār mib·bə·śā·rî lə·zōṯ yiq·qā·rê ’iš·šāh kî mê·’îš zōṯ lu·qo·ḥāh-WLC · 23

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

עַל־ כֵּן֙ אִ֔ישׁ אֶת־ יַֽעֲזָב־ אָבִ֖יו וְאֶת־ אִמּ֑וֹ וְדָבַ֣ק בְּאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וְהָי֖וּ אֶחָֽד׃ לְבָשָׂ֥ר ‘al- kên ’îš ’eṯ- ya·‘ă·zāḇ- ’ā·ḇîw wə·’eṯ- ’im·mōw wə·ḏā·ḇaq bə·’iš·tōw wə·hā·yū ’e·ḥāḏ lə·ḇā·śārWLC · 24

And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
