Chapter 21
The Birth of Isaac
1
Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.

וַֽיהוָ֛ה פָּקַ֥ד אֶת־ שָׂרָ֖ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמָ֑ר יְהוָ֛ה וַיַּ֧עַשׂ לְשָׂרָ֖ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר׃ Yah·weh pā·qaḏ ’eṯ- śā·rāh ka·’ă·šer ’ā·mār Yah·weh way·ya·‘aś lə·śā·rāh ka·’ă·šer dib·bêr — WLC · 1

So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised…

שָׂרָ֧ה וַתַּהַר֩ וַתֵּ֨לֶד בֵּ֖ן לְאַבְרָהָ֛ם לִזְקֻנָ֑יו לַמּוֹעֵ֕ד אֲשֶׁר־ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ דִּבֶּ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ śā·rāh wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ bên lə·’aḇ·rā·hām liz·qu·nāw lam·mō·w·‘êḏ ’ă·šer- ’ĕ·lō·hîm dib·ber ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 2

And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son - Sarah bore to him.

אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶֽת־ וַיִּקְרָ֨א שֶׁם־ יִצְחָֽק׃ בְּנ֧וֹ הַנּֽוֹלַד־ ל֛וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׂרָ֖ה יָלְדָה־ לּ֥וֹ ’aḇ·rā·hām ’eṯ- way·yiq·rā šem- yiṣ·ḥāq bə·nōw han·nō·w·laḏ- lōw ’ă·šer- śā·rāh yā·lə·ḏāh- lōw — WLC · 3

When his son… Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him. -

בְּנ֔וֹ בֶּן־ יִצְחָ֣ק שְׁמֹנַ֖ת יָמִ֑ים אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶת־ וַיָּ֤מָל כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר אֱלֹהִֽים׃ צִוָּ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ bə·nōw ben- yiṣ·ḥāq šə·mō·naṯ yā·mîm ’aḇ·rā·hām ’eṯ- way·yā·māl ka·’ă·šer ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣiw·wāh ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 4

Abraham was a hundred years old… when his son Isaac was born to him. -

וְאַבְרָהָ֖ם מְאַ֣ת בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֑ה בְּנֽוֹ׃ יִצְחָ֥ק בְּהִוָּ֣לֶד ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת wə·’aḇ·rā·hām mə·’aṯ ben- šā·nāh bə·nōw yiṣ·ḥāq bə·hiw·wā·leḏ lōw ’êṯ — WLC · 5

Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”

שָׂרָ֔ה וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֑ים עָ֥שָׂה לִ֖י צְחֹ֕ק כָּל־ הַשֹּׁמֵ֖עַ יִֽצְחַק־ לִֽי׃ śā·rāh wat·tō·mer ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ā·śāh lî ṣə·ḥōq kāl- haš·šō·mê·a‘ yiṣ·ḥaq- lî — WLC · 6

She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר מִ֤י מִלֵּל֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם שָׂרָ֑ה הֵינִ֥יקָה בָנִ֖ים כִּֽי־ יָלַ֥דְתִּי בֵ֖ן לִזְקֻנָֽיו׃ wat·tō·mer mî mil·lêl lə·’aḇ·rā·hām śā·rāh hê·nî·qāh ḇā·nîm kî- yā·laḏ·tî ḇên liz·qu·nāw — WLC · 7

So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. -

הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַיִּגְדַּ֥ל וַיִּגָּמַ֑ל אַבְרָהָם֙ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ גָד֔וֹל מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה בְּי֖וֹם יִצְחָֽק׃ הִגָּמֵ֥ל אֶת־ hay·ye·leḏ way·yiḡ·dal way·yig·gā·mal ’aḇ·rā·hām way·ya·‘aś ḡā·ḏō·wl miš·teh bə·yō·wm yiṣ·ḥāq hig·gā·mêl ’eṯ- — WLC · 8
Sarah Turns against Hagar

But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking [her son],

שָׂרָ֜ה אֶֽת־ וַתֵּ֨רֶא בֶּן־ אֲשֶׁר־ הָגָ֧ר הַמִּצְרִ֛ית יָלְדָ֥ה לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם מְצַחֵֽק׃ śā·rāh ’eṯ- wat·tê·re ben- ’ă·šer- hā·ḡār ham·miṣ·rîṯ yā·lə·ḏāh lə·’aḇ·rā·hām mə·ṣa·ḥêq — WLC · 9

and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s… son will never share in the inheritance with my son… Isaac!”

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם גָּרֵ֛שׁ הַזֹּ֖את וְאֶת־ הָאָמָ֥ה בְּנָ֑הּ כִּ֣י הָאָמָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את בֶּן־ לֹ֤א יִירַשׁ֙ עִם־ בְּנִ֖י עִם־ יִצְחָֽק׃ wat·tō·mer lə·’aḇ·rā·hām gā·rêš haz·zōṯ wə·’eṯ- hā·’ā·māh bə·nāh kî hā·’ā·māh haz·zōṯ ben- lō yî·raš ‘im- bə·nî ‘im- yiṣ·ḥāq — WLC · 10

Now this matter distressed… Abraham greatly vvv because it concerned his son [Ishmael].
𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤅
הַדָּבָ֛ר וַיֵּ֧רַע בְּעֵינֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם מְאֹ֖ד עַ֖ל אוֹדֹ֥ת בְּנֽוֹ׃ had·dā·ḇār way·yê·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê ’aḇ·rā·hām mə·’ōḏ ‘al ’ō·w·ḏōṯ bə·nōw — WLC · 11

But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed… about the boy… and your maidservant. Listen to… everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤋𐤊 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀
אֱלֹהִ֜ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְרָהָ֗ם אַל־ יֵרַ֤ע בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ עַל־ הַנַּ֣עַר וְעַל־ אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלָ֑הּ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שָׂרָ֖ה תֹּאמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֛יךָ כִּ֣י בְיִצְחָ֔ק לְךָ֖ זָֽרַע׃ יִקָּרֵ֥א ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·rā·hām ’al- yê·ra‘ bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā ‘al- han·na·‘ar wə·‘al- ’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā šə·ma‘ bə·qō·lāh kōl ’ă·šer śā·rāh tō·mar ’ê·le·ḵā kî ḇə·yiṣ·ḥāq lə·ḵā zā·ra‘ yiq·qā·rê — WLC · 12

But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”

וְגַ֥ם אֶת־ אֲשִׂימֶ֑נּוּ לְג֣וֹי הָאָמָ֖ה בֶּן־ כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ זַרְעֲךָ֖ wə·ḡam ’eṯ- ’ă·śî·men·nū lə·ḡō·w hā·’ā·māh ben- kî hū zar·‘ă·ḵā — WLC · 13

Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water…,… put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy… She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.

בַּבֹּ֡קֶר אַבְרָהָ֣ם׀ וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ לֶחֶם֩ וְחֵ֨מַת מַ֜יִם וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֶל־ שָׂ֧ם עַל־ הָ֠גָר שִׁכְמָ֛הּ וְאֶת־ הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֑הָ וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ וַתֵּ֔תַע בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ bab·bō·qer ’aḇ·rā·hām way·yaš·kêm way·yiq·qaḥ- le·ḥem wə·ḥê·maṯ ma·yim way·yit·tên ’el- śām ‘al- hā·ḡār šiḵ·māh wə·’eṯ- hay·ye·leḏ way·šal·lə·ḥe·hā wat·tê·leḵ wat·tê·ṯa‘ bə·miḏ·bar bə·’êr šā·ḇa‘ — WLC · 14

When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.

הַמַּ֖יִם מִן־ הַחֵ֑מֶת וַיִּכְל֥וּ וַתַּשְׁלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־ הַיֶּ֔לֶד תַּ֖חַת אַחַ֥ד הַשִּׂיחִֽם׃ ham·ma·yim min- ha·ḥê·meṯ way·yiḵ·lū wat·taš·lêḵ ’eṯ- hay·ye·leḏ ta·ḥaṯ ’a·ḥaḏ haś·śî·ḥim — WLC · 15

Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot… away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.

וַתֵּלֶךְ֩ וַתֵּ֨שֶׁב לָ֜הּ מִנֶּ֗גֶד כִּמְטַחֲוֵ֣י קֶ֔שֶׁת הַרְחֵק֙ כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֔ה אַל־ אֶרְאֶ֖ה הַיָּ֑לֶד בְּמ֣וֹת וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַתִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־ קֹלָ֖הּ וַתֵּֽבְךְּ׃ wat·tê·leḵ wat·tê·šeḇ lāh min·ne·ḡeḏ kim·ṭa·ḥă·wê qe·šeṯ har·ḥêq kî ’ā·mə·rāh ’al- ’er·’eh hay·yā·leḏ bə·mō·wṯ wat·tê·šeḇ min·ne·ḡeḏ wat·tiś·śā ’eṯ- qō·lāh wat·tê·ḇək — WLC · 16

Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven “What is wrong Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God… has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.

אֱלֹהִים֮ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע ק֣וֹל הַנַּעַר֒ מַלְאַ֨ךְ אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ וַיִּקְרָא֩ אֶל־ הָגָר֙ מִן־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ מַה־ לָּ֣ךְ הָגָ֑ר אַל־ תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶל־ שָׁמַ֧ע ק֥וֹל הַנַּ֖עַר בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הוּא־ שָֽׁם׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yiš·ma‘ qō·wl han·na·‘ar mal·’aḵ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiq·rā ’el- hā·ḡār min- haš·šā·ma·yim way·yō·mer lāh mah- lāḵ hā·ḡār ’al- tî·rə·’î kî- ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’el- šā·ma‘ qō·wl han·na·‘ar ba·’ă·šer hū- šām — WLC · 17

Get up, lift up the boy -, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

ק֚וּמִי שְׂאִ֣י הַנַּ֔עַר אֶת־ וְהַחֲזִ֥יקִי בּ֑וֹ אֶת־ יָדֵ֖ךְ כִּֽי־ אֲשִׂימֶֽנּוּ׃ גָּד֖וֹל לְג֥וֹי qū·mî śə·’î han·na·‘ar ’eṯ- wə·ha·ḥă·zî·qî bōw ’eṯ- yā·ḏêḵ kî- ’ă·śî·men·nū gā·ḏō·wl lə·ḡō·w — WLC · 18

Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water… and gave the boy a drink. -
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤇 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤒 𐤀𐤕
אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־ וַיִּפְקַ֤ח עֵינֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּ֖רֶא בְּאֵ֣ר מָ֑יִם וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ וַתְּמַלֵּ֤א אֶת־ הַחֵ֙מֶת֙ מַ֔יִם הַנָּֽעַר׃ וַתַּ֖שְׁקְ אֶת־ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yip̄·qaḥ ‘ê·ne·hā wat·tê·re bə·’êr mā·yim wat·tê·leḵ wat·tə·mal·lê ’eṯ- ha·ḥê·meṯ ma·yim han·nā·‘ar wat·tašq ’eṯ- — WLC · 19

And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.

The Covenant at Beersheba

- At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham,… “God is with you in all that you do.

Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside… the same kindness that I have shown to you.”

וְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּׁ֨בְעָה לִּ֤י הֵ֔נָּה בֵֽאלֹהִים֙ אִם־ תִּשְׁקֹ֣ר לִ֔י וּלְנִינִ֖י וּלְנֶכְדִּ֑י תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה עִמָּדִ֔י וְעִם־ הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ גַּ֥רְתָּה בָּֽהּ׃ כַּחֶ֜סֶד אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂ֤יתִי עִמְּךָ֙ wə·‘at·tāh hiš·šā·ḇə·‘āh lî hên·nāh ḇê·lō·hîm ’im- tiš·qōr lî ū·lə·nî·nî ū·lə·neḵ·dî ta·‘ă·śeh ‘im·mā·ḏî wə·‘im- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- gar·tāh bāh ka·ḥe·seḏ ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śî·ṯî ‘im·mə·ḵā — WLC · 23

And Abraham replied, “I swear it.”

But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about… a well… that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤊𐤇 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤂𐤆𐤋𐤅
אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶת־ וְהוֹכִ֥חַ אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עַל־ אֹדוֹת֙ בְּאֵ֣ר הַמַּ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ עַבְדֵ֥י גָּזְל֖וּ ’aḇ·rā·hām ’eṯ- wə·hō·w·ḵi·aḥ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ‘al- ’ō·ḏō·wṯ bə·’êr ham·ma·yim ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ‘aḇ·ḏê gā·zə·lū — WLC · 25

Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this… You did not tell me,… so I have not heard about it until today…”

אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־ הַזֶּ֑ה וְגַם־ הַדָּבָ֣ר אַתָּ֞ה לֹא־ הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֗י וְגַ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י לֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי בִּלְתִּ֥י הַיּֽוֹם׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yō·mer lō yā·ḏa‘·tî mî ‘ā·śāh ’eṯ- haz·zeh wə·ḡam- had·dā·ḇār ’at·tāh lō- hig·gaḏ·tā lî wə·ḡam ’ā·nō·ḵî lō šā·ma‘·tî bil·tî hay·yō·wm — WLC · 26

So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.

Abraham separated… seven ewe lambs from the flock,

אַבְרָהָ֗ם אֶת־ וַיַּצֵּ֣ב לְבַדְּהֶֽן׃ שֶׁ֛בַע כִּבְשֹׂ֥ת הַצֹּ֖אן ’aḇ·rā·hām ’eṯ- way·yaṣ·ṣêḇ lə·ḇad·də·hen še·ḇa‘ kiḇ·śōṯ haṣ·ṣōn — WLC · 28

and Abimelech asked… [him], “Why… have you set apart… these seven ewe lambs?”

אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְרָהָ֑ם מָ֣ה הֵ֗נָּה הִצַּ֖בְתָּ לְבַדָּֽנָה׃ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שֶׁ֤בַע כְּבָשֹׂת֙ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·rā·hām māh hên·nāh hiṣ·ṣaḇ·tā lə·ḇad·dā·nāh hā·’êl·leh ’ă·šer še·ḇa‘ kə·ḇā·śōṯ — WLC · 29

He replied “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand vvv vvv vvv as my witness that I dug this well.”

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֚י אֶת־ תִּקַּ֖ח שֶׁ֣בַע כְּבָשֹׂ֔ת מִיָּדִ֑י בַּעֲבוּר֙ תִּֽהְיֶה־ לִּ֣י לְעֵדָ֔ה כִּ֥י חָפַ֖רְתִּי אֶת־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ הַבְּאֵ֥ר way·yō·mer kî ’eṯ- tiq·qaḥ še·ḇa‘ kə·ḇā·śōṯ mî·yā·ḏî ba·‘ă·ḇūr tih·yeh- lî lə·‘ê·ḏāh kî ḥā·p̄ar·tî ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hab·bə·’êr — WLC · 30

So… that place was called Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.

עַל־ כֵּ֗ן הַה֖וּא בְּאֵ֣ר לַמָּק֥וֹם קָרָ֛א שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֛י שָׁ֥ם שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ נִשְׁבְּע֖וּ ‘al- kên ha·hū bə·’êr lam·mā·qō·wm qā·rā šā·ḇa‘ kî šām šə·nê·hem niš·bə·‘ū — WLC · 31

After they had made the covenant vvv at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ בְרִ֖ית בִּבְאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וּפִיכֹל֙ שַׂר־ צְבָא֔וֹ וַיָּ֣קָם וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ way·yiḵ·rə·ṯū ḇə·rîṯ biḇ·’êr šā·ḇa‘ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ū·p̄î·ḵōl śar- ṣə·ḇā·’ōw way·yā·qām way·yā·šu·ḇū ’el- ’e·reṣ pə·liš·tîm — WLC · 32

And [Abraham] planted a tamarisk tree vvv in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.

And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
