Chapter 31

Jacob Flees from Laban

1

Now Jacob heard that Laban’s… sons were saying, “Jacob has taken away all that [belonged to] our father and built all this wealth at our father’s expense.”

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅

וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע אֶת־ לָבָן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בְנֵֽי־ דִּבְרֵ֤י יַעֲקֹ֔ב אֵ֖ת לָקַ֣ח כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֑ינוּ עָשָׂ֕ה אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הַזֶּֽה׃ הַכָּבֹ֖ד וּמֵאֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֔ינוּ way·yiš·ma‘ ’eṯ- lā·ḇān lê·mōr ḇə·nê- diḇ·rê ya·‘ă·qōḇ ’êṯ lā·qaḥ kāl- ’ă·šer lə·’ā·ḇî·nū ‘ā·śāh ’êṯ kāl- haz·zeh hak·kā·ḇōḏ ū·mê·’ă·šer lə·’ā·ḇî·nūWLC · 1

And Jacob saw from the countenance of Laban… that his attitude toward him… had changed.

𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤅

יַעֲקֹ֖ב אֶת־ וַיַּ֥רְא פְּנֵ֣י לָבָ֑ן וְהִנֵּ֥ה עִמּ֖וֹ כִּתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ אֵינֶ֛נּוּ ya·‘ă·qōḇ ’eṯ- way·yar pə·nê lā·ḇān wə·hin·nêh ‘im·mōw kiṯ·mō·wl šil·šō·wm ’ê·nen·nūWLC · 2

Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤊

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶֽל־ יַעֲקֹ֔ב שׁ֛וּב אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ אֲבוֹתֶ֖יךָ וּלְמוֹלַדְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֶֽהְיֶ֖ה עִמָּֽךְ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- ya·‘ă·qōḇ šūḇ ’el- ’e·reṣ ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā ū·lə·mō·w·laḏ·te·ḵā wə·’eh·yeh ‘im·māḵWLC · 3

So Jacob sent word and called Rachel and Leah to the field… where his flocks were,

𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤓𐤇𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅

יַעֲקֹ֔ב וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח וַיִּקְרָ֖א לְרָחֵ֣ל וּלְלֵאָ֑ה הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה אֶל־ צֹאנֽוֹ׃ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yiš·laḥ way·yiq·rā lə·rā·ḥêl ū·lə·lê·’āh haś·śā·ḏeh ’el- ṣō·nōwWLC · 4

and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed…; but the God of my father has been with me.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤕𐤌𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ן אָנֹכִי֙ אֶת־ רֹאֶ֤ה אֲבִיכֶ֔ן פְּנֵ֣י כִּֽי־ אֵלַ֖י אֵינֶ֥נּוּ כִּתְמֹ֣ל שִׁלְשֹׁ֑ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֣י אָבִ֔י הָיָ֖ה עִמָּדִֽי׃ way·yō·mer lā·hen ’ā·nō·ḵî ’eṯ- rō·’eh ’ă·ḇî·ḵen pə·nê kî- ’ê·lay ’ê·nen·nū kiṯ·mōl šil·šōm wê·lō·hê ’ā·ḇî hā·yāh ‘im·mā·ḏîWLC · 5

You know that I have served your father with all my strength.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤇𐤉

וְאַתֵּ֖נָה יְדַעְתֶּ֑ן כִּ֚י עָבַ֖דְתִּי אֶת־ אֲבִיכֶֽן׃ בְּכָל־ כֹּחִ֔י wə·’at·tê·nāh yə·ḏa‘·ten kî ‘ā·ḇaḏ·tî ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇî·ḵen bə·ḵāl kō·ḥîWLC · 6

And although he has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, God has not allowed him to harm me…

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤋 𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤐 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉

וַאֲבִיכֶן֙ הֵ֣תֶל בִּ֔י וְהֶחֱלִ֥ף אֶת־ מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת מֹנִ֑ים אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְלֹֽא־ נְתָנ֣וֹ לְהָרַ֖ע עִמָּדִֽי׃ wa·’ă·ḇî·ḵen hê·ṯel bî wə·he·ḥĕ·lip̄ ’eṯ- maś·kur·tî ‘ă·śe·reṯ mō·nîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·lō- nə·ṯā·nōw lə·hā·ra‘ ‘im·mā·ḏîWLC · 7

If… he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore speckled offspring. If… he said, ‘The streaked will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore streaked offspring.

𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤍𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤍𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌

אִם־ כֹּ֣ה יֹאמַ֗ר נְקֻדִּים֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה שְׂכָרֶ֔ךָ כָל־ הַצֹּ֖אן וְיָלְד֥וּ נְקֻדִּ֑ים וְאִם־ כֹּ֣ה יֹאמַ֗ר עֲקֻדִּים֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה שְׂכָרֶ֔ךָ כָל־ הַצֹּ֖אן וְיָלְד֥וּ עֲקֻדִּֽים׃ ’im- kōh yō·mar nə·qud·dîm yih·yeh śə·ḵā·re·ḵā ḵāl haṣ·ṣōn wə·yā·lə·ḏū nə·qud·dîm wə·’im- kōh yō·mar ‘ă·qud·dîm yih·yeh śə·ḵā·re·ḵā ḵāl haṣ·ṣōn wə·yā·lə·ḏū ‘ă·qud·dîmWLC · 8

Thus God has taken away your father’s livestock and given [them] to me.

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉

אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־ וַיַּצֵּ֧ל אֲבִיכֶ֖ם מִקְנֵ֥ה וַיִּתֶּן־ לִֽי׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yaṣ·ṣêl ’ă·ḇî·ḵem miq·nêh way·yit·ten- lîWLC · 9

  • When the flocks were breeding, I saw… in a dream… that the streaked, spotted, and speckled males were mating with the females.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤕𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍

וַיְהִ֗י בְּעֵת֙ הַצֹּ֔אן יַחֵ֣ם וָאֶשָּׂ֥א עֵינַ֛י וָאֵ֖רֶא בַּחֲל֑וֹם וְהִנֵּ֤ה עֲקֻדִּ֥ים וּבְרֻדִּֽים׃ נְקֻדִּ֖ים הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ הָעֹלִ֣ים עַל־ הַצֹּ֔אן way·hî bə·‘êṯ haṣ·ṣōn ya·ḥêm wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’ê·re ba·ḥă·lō·wm wə·hin·nêh ‘ă·qud·dîm ū·ḇə·rud·dîm nə·qud·dîm hā·‘at·tu·ḏîm hā·‘ō·lîm ‘al- haṣ·ṣōnWLC · 10

In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Here I am.’

𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉

בַּחֲל֖וֹם מַלְאַ֧ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלַ֜י יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב וָאֹמַ֖ר הִנֵּֽנִי׃ ba·ḥă·lō·wm mal·’aḵ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ya·‘ă·qōḇ wā·’ō·mar hin·nê·nîWLC · 11

‘Look up…,’ he said, ‘and see that all the males that are mating with the flock are streaked, spotted, or speckled; for I have seen all that Laban has done to you.

𐤔𐤀 𐤍𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤕𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤏𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊

שָׂא־ נָ֨א עֵינֶ֤יךָ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וּרְאֵה֙ כָּל־ הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ הָעֹלִ֣ים עַל־ הַצֹּ֔אן עֲקֻדִּ֥ים וּבְרֻדִּ֑ים נְקֻדִּ֖ים כִּ֣י רָאִ֔יתִי אֵ֛ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָבָ֖ן עֹ֥שֶׂה לָּֽךְ׃ śā- nā ‘ê·ne·ḵā way·yō·mer ū·rə·’êh kāl- hā·‘at·tu·ḏîm hā·‘ō·lîm ‘al- haṣ·ṣōn ‘ă·qud·dîm ū·ḇə·rud·dîm nə·qud·dîm kî rā·’î·ṯî ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer lā·ḇān ‘ō·śeh lāḵWLC · 12

I am the God vvv of Bethel, where you anointed… the pillar and made… a solemn vow to Me. Now get up, leave… this land {at once}, and return to your native land.’”

𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤃𐤓𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤍𐤃𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤑

אָנֹכִ֤י הָאֵל֙ בֵּֽית־ אֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָשַׁ֤חְתָּ שָּׁם֙ מַצֵּבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָדַ֥רְתָּ שָׁ֖ם נֶ֑דֶר לִּ֛י עַתָּ֗ה ק֥וּם צֵא֙ מִן־ הַזֹּ֔את הָאָ֣רֶץ וְשׁ֖וּב אֶל־ מוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃ אֶ֥רֶץ ’ā·nō·ḵî hā·’êl bêṯ- ’êl ’ă·šer mā·šaḥ·tā šām maṣ·ṣê·ḇāh ’ă·šer nā·ḏar·tā šām ne·ḏer lî ‘at·tāh qūm ṣê min- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·šūḇ ’el- mō·w·laḏ·te·ḵā ’e·reṣWLC · 13

And Rachel and Leah replied… “Do we have any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?

𐤓𐤇𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕

רָחֵל֙ וְלֵאָ֔ה וַתַּ֤עַן וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה ל֑וֹ לָ֛נוּ חֵ֥לֶק וְנַחֲלָ֖ה הַע֥וֹד אָבִֽינוּ׃ בְּבֵ֥ית rā·ḥêl wə·lê·’āh wat·ta·‘an wat·tō·mar·nāh lōw lā·nū ḥê·leq wə·na·ḥă·lāh ha·‘ō·wḏ ’ā·ḇî·nū bə·ḇêṯWLC · 14

Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? Not only has he sold us, but he has certainly squandered… what was paid for us.

𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤊𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤊𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤐𐤍𐤅

הֲל֧וֹא נֶחְשַׁ֥בְנוּ ל֖וֹ נָכְרִיּ֛וֹת כִּ֣י מְכָרָ֑נוּ גַּם־ וַיֹּ֥אכַל אָכ֖וֹל אֶת־ כַּסְפֵּֽנוּ׃ hă·lō·w neḥ·šaḇ·nū lōw nā·ḵə·rî·yō·wṯ kî mə·ḵā·rā·nū gam- way·yō·ḵal ’ā·ḵō·wl ’eṯ- kas·pê·nūWLC · 15

Surely all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us… and to our children. So do whatever God has told you.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊

כִּ֣י כָל־ הָעֹ֗שֶׁר אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֱלֹהִים֙ הִצִּ֤יל מֵֽאָבִ֔ינוּ לָ֥נוּ ה֖וּא וּלְבָנֵ֑ינוּ וְעַתָּ֗ה עֲשֵֽׂה׃ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֱלֹהִ֛ים אָמַ֧ר אֵלֶ֖יךָ kî ḵāl hā·‘ō·šer ’ă·šer ’ĕ·lō·hîm hiṣ·ṣîl mê·’ā·ḇî·nū lā·nū hū ū·lə·ḇā·nê·nū wə·‘at·tāh ‘ă·śêh kōl ’ă·šer ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ā·mar ’ê·le·ḵāWLC · 16

Then Jacob got up and put his children and his wives on camels,

𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤌

יַעֲקֹ֑ב וַיָּ֖קָם וַיִּשָּׂ֛א אֶת־ בָּנָ֥יו וְאֶת־ נָשָׁ֖יו עַל־ הַגְּמַלִּֽים׃ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yā·qām way·yiś·śā ’eṯ- bā·nāw wə·’eṯ- nā·šāw ‘al- hag·gə·mal·lîmWLC · 17

and he drove all his livestock {before him}, -… -… along with all the possessions he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land in Canaan.

𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤄𐤂 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤊𐤔 𐤁𐤐𐤃𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤊𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤊𐤔 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍

וַיִּנְהַ֣ג אֶת־ כָּל־ מִקְנֵ֗הוּ וְאֶת־ מִקְנֵה֙ קִנְיָנ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָכַ֖שׁ בְּפַדַּ֣ן כָּל־ רְכֻשׁוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר רָכָ֔שׁ אֲרָ֑ם לָב֛וֹא אֶל־ אָבִ֖יו יִצְחָ֥ק אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃ way·yin·haḡ ’eṯ- kāl- miq·nê·hū wə·’eṯ- miq·nêh qin·yā·nōw ’ă·šer rā·ḵaš bə·p̄ad·dan kāl- rə·ḵu·šōw ’ă·šer rā·ḵāš ’ă·rām lā·ḇō·w ’el- ’ā·ḇîw yiṣ·ḥāq ’ar·ṣāh kə·nā·‘anWLC · 18

Now while Laban was out shearing his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household idols -.

𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤂𐤆𐤆 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤓𐤇𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤍𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤓𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓

Moreover, Jacob deceived… Laban the Aramean… by not telling him that he was running away.

So he fled with all his possessions crossed the Euphrates, and headed for - the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

On the third day Laban was informed that Jacob had fled.

הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י בַּיּ֣וֹם לְלָבָ֖ן וַיֻּגַּ֥ד כִּ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ בָרַ֖ח haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm lə·lā·ḇān way·yug·gaḏ kî ya·‘ă·qōḇ ḇā·raḥWLC · 22

So he took his relatives with him, pursued Jacob… for seven days, and overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.

But that night God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”

Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook [him], and Laban and his relatives camped… [there as well].

Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have deceived me… and carried off my daughters… like captives of war!

Why did you run away secretly and deceive me, without even telling me? I would have sent you away with joy and singing, with tambourines and harps.

But you did not even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters { goodbye }. Now you have done a foolish thing.

  • I have power to do… you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me…, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Now you have gone off… because you long… for your father’s house. But why have you stolen my gods?”

וְעַתָּה֙ הָלֹ֣ךְ הָלַ֔כְתָּ כִּֽי־ נִכְסֹ֥ף נִכְסַ֖פְתָּה אָבִ֑יךָ לְבֵ֣ית לָ֥מָּה גָנַ֖בְתָּ אֶת־ אֱלֹהָֽי׃ wə·‘at·tāh hā·lōḵ hā·laḵ·tā kî- niḵ·sōp̄ niḵ·sap̄·tāh ’ā·ḇî·ḵā lə·ḇêṯ lām·māh ḡā·naḇ·tā ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hāyWLC · 30

“vvv I was afraid,” Jacob answered, “for… I thought [you] would take your daughters from me by force. -

כִּ֣י יָרֵ֔אתִי יַעֲקֹ֖ב וַיַּ֥עַן כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי פֶּן־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְלָבָ֑ן בְּנוֹתֶ֖יךָ מֵעִמִּֽי׃ תִּגְזֹ֥ל אֶת־ kî yā·rê·ṯî ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·ya·‘an kî ’ā·mar·tî pen- way·yō·mer lə·lā·ḇān bə·nō·w·ṯe·ḵā mê·‘im·mî tiḡ·zōl ’eṯ-WLC · 31

If you find your gods with anyone here, he shall not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen [the idols].

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent, and then the tents of the two maidservants, but he found nothing. Then he left Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.

Now Rachel had taken Laban’s household idols, put them in the saddlebag of her camel, and was sitting on them. And Laban searched everything in the tent but found nothing.

[Rachel] said to her father, “Sir, do not be angry… that I cannot… stand up before you; for I am having my period… So Laban searched but could not find the household idols.

Then Jacob became incensed and challenged Laban… “What is my crime?” he said. “For what sin of mine have you so hotly pursued me?

כִּֽי־ מִשַּׁ֣שְׁתָּ אֶת־ כָּל־ כֵּלַ֗י מַה־ מָּצָ֙אתָ֙ מִכֹּ֣ל כְּלֵי־ בֵיתֶ֔ךָ שִׂ֣ים כֹּ֔ה נֶ֥גֶד אַחַ֖י וְאַחֶ֑יךָ וְיוֹכִ֖יחוּ בֵּ֥ין שְׁנֵֽינוּ׃ kî- miš·šaš·tā ’eṯ- kāl- kê·lay mah- mā·ṣā·ṯā mik·kōl kə·lê- ḇê·ṯe·ḵā śîm kōh ne·ḡeḏ ’a·ḥay wə·’a·ḥe·ḵā wə·yō·w·ḵî·ḥū bên šə·nê·nūWLC · 37

I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flock.

אָנֹכִי֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ זֶה֩ עֶשְׂרִ֨ים שָׁנָ֤ה רְחֵלֶ֥יךָ וְעִזֶּ֖יךָ לֹ֣א שִׁכֵּ֑לוּ לֹ֥א אָכָֽלְתִּי׃ וְאֵילֵ֥י צֹאנְךָ֖ ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘im·māḵ zeh ‘eś·rîm šā·nāh rə·ḥê·le·ḵā wə·‘iz·ze·ḵā lō šik·kê·lū lō ’ā·ḵā·lə·tî wə·’ê·lê ṣō·nə·ḵāWLC · 38

I did not bring you anything torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was stolen by day… or night.

As it was, the heat consumed me by day and the frost by night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

הָיִ֧יתִי חֹ֖רֶב אֲכָלַ֥נִי בַיּ֛וֹם וְקֶ֣רַח בַּלָּ֑יְלָה שְׁנָתִ֖י וַתִּדַּ֥ד מֵֽעֵינָֽי׃ hā·yî·ṯî ḥō·reḇ ’ă·ḵā·la·nî ḇay·yō·wm wə·qe·raḥ bal·lā·yə·lāh šə·nā·ṯî wat·tid·daḏ mê·‘ê·nāyWLC · 40

Thus for twenty years I have served in your household— fourteen… years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks— and you have changed my wages ten times!

If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, surely by now you would have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, and last night He rendered judgment.”

Jacob’s Covenant with Laban

But Laban… answered Jacob, “[These] daughters are my daughters, [these] sons [are] my sons, and [these] flocks [are] my flocks! Everything you see is mine! Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine or the children they have borne?

לָבָ֜ן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־ וַיַּ֨עַן יַעֲקֹ֗ב הַבָּנ֨וֹת בְּנֹתַ֜י וְהַבָּנִ֤ים בָּנַי֙ וְהַצֹּ֣אן צֹאנִ֔י וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה ה֑וּא לִי־ מָֽה־ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֤ה הַיּ֔וֹם לָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ וְלִבְנֹתַ֞י א֥וֹ לִבְנֵיהֶ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָלָֽדוּ׃ lā·ḇān way·yō·mer ’el- way·ya·‘an ya·‘ă·qōḇ hab·bā·nō·wṯ bə·nō·ṯay wə·hab·bā·nîm bā·nay wə·haṣ·ṣōn ṣō·nî wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh rō·’eh hū lî- māh- ’e·‘ĕ·śeh hay·yō·wm lā·’êl·leh wə·liḇ·nō·ṯay ’ōw liḇ·nê·hen ’ă·šer yā·lā·ḏūWLC · 43

Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between you and me…”

לְכָ֛ה וְעַתָּ֗ה נִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית וָאָ֑תָּה אֲנִ֣י וְהָיָ֥ה לְעֵ֖ד בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ lə·ḵāh wə·‘at·tāh niḵ·rə·ṯāh ḇə·rîṯ wā·’āt·tāh ’ă·nî wə·hā·yāh lə·‘êḏ bê·nî ū·ḇê·ne·ḵāWLC · 44

So Jacob picked out a stone and set it up as a pillar,

יַעֲקֹ֖ב וַיִּקַּ֥ח אָ֑בֶן וַיְרִימֶ֖הָ מַצֵּבָֽה׃ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yiq·qaḥ ’ā·ḇen way·rî·me·hā maṣ·ṣê·ḇāhWLC · 45

and [he] said to his relatives, “Gather [some] stones.” So they took stones and made a mound, and there by the mound they ate.

יַעֲקֹ֤ב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְאֶחָיו֙ לִקְט֣וּ אֲבָנִ֔ים וַיִּקְח֥וּ אֲבָנִ֖ים וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ גָ֑ל שָׁ֖ם עַל־ הַגָּֽל׃ וַיֹּ֥אכְלוּ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yō·mer lə·’e·ḥāw liq·ṭū ’ă·ḇā·nîm way·yiq·ḥū ’ă·ḇā·nîm way·ya·‘ă·śū- ḡāl šām ‘al- hag·gāl way·yō·ḵə·lūWLC · 46

Laban called it… vvv Jegar-sahadutha, and Jacob called it… Galeed.

לָבָ֔ן וַיִּקְרָא־ ל֣וֹ יְגַ֖ר שָׂהֲדוּתָ֑א וְיַֽעֲקֹ֔ב קָ֥רָא ל֖וֹ גַּלְעֵֽד׃ lā·ḇān way·yiq·rā- lōw yə·ḡar śā·hă·ḏū·ṯā wə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ qā·rā lōw gal·‘êḏWLC · 47

Then Laban declared, “This mound is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore… the place was called… Galeed.

[It was] also [called] Mizpah, because [Laban] said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other…

וְהַמִּצְפָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמַ֔ר יְהוָ֖ה יִ֥צֶף בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ כִּ֥י נִסָּתֵ֖ר מֵרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ אִ֥ישׁ wə·ham·miṣ·pāh ’ă·šer ’ā·mar Yah·weh yi·ṣep̄ bê·nî ū·ḇê·ne·ḵā kî nis·sā·ṯêr mê·rê·‘ê·hū ’îšWLC · 49

If you mistreat my daughters or take other… wives, although no one is with us, remember that God [is a] witness between you and me…”

אִם־ תְּעַנֶּ֣ה אֶת־ בְּנֹתַ֗י וְאִם־ תִּקַּ֤ח עַל־ בְּנֹתַ֔י נָשִׁים֙ אֵ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ עִמָּ֑נוּ רְאֵ֕ה אֱלֹהִ֥ים עֵ֖ד בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ ’im- tə·‘an·neh ’eṯ- bə·nō·ṯay wə·’im- tiq·qaḥ ‘al- bə·nō·ṯay nā·šîm ’ên ’îš ‘im·mā·nū rə·’êh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘êḏ bê·nî ū·ḇê·ne·ḵāWLC · 50

Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is the… mound, and here is the pillar I have set up between you and me…

לָבָ֖ן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב הִנֵּ֣ה׀ הַזֶּ֗ה וְהִנֵּה֙ הַגַּ֣ל הַמַצֵּבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָרִ֖יתִי בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ lā·ḇān way·yō·mer lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ hin·nêh haz·zeh wə·hin·nêh hag·gal ha·maṣ·ṣē·ḇå̄h ’ă·šer yā·rî·ṯî bê·nî ū·ḇê·ne·ḵāWLC · 51

This mound is a witness, and [this] pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this… mound to harm you, and you will not go past… this mound and pillar to harm me.

הַזֶּ֔ה הַגַּ֣ל עֵ֚ד הַמַּצֵּבָ֑ה וְעֵדָ֖ה אִם־ אָ֗נִי לֹֽא־ אֶֽעֱבֹ֤ר הַזֶּ֔ה וְאִם־ הַגַּ֣ל אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־ אַ֠תָּה לֹא־ תַעֲבֹ֨ר אֵלַ֜י אֶת־ הַזֶּ֛ה וְאֶת־ הַגַּ֥ל הַזֹּ֖את הַמַּצֵּבָ֥ה לְרָעָֽה׃ haz·zeh hag·gal ‘êḏ ham·maṣ·ṣê·ḇāh wə·‘ê·ḏāh ’im- ’ā·nî lō- ’e·‘ĕ·ḇōr haz·zeh wə·’im- hag·gal ’ê·le·ḵā ’eṯ- ’at·tāh lō- ṯa·‘ă·ḇōr ’ê·lay ’eṯ- haz·zeh wə·’eṯ- hag·gal haz·zōṯ ham·maṣ·ṣê·ḇāh lə·rā·‘āhWLC · 52

May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

אֱלֹהֵ֨י אַבְרָהָ֜ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י נָחוֹר֙ אֱלֹהֵ֖י אֲבִיהֶ֑ם יִשְׁפְּט֣וּ בֵינֵ֔ינוּ יַעֲקֹ֔ב וַיִּשָּׁבַ֣ע בְּפַ֖חַד אָבִ֥יו יִצְחָֽק׃ ’ĕ·lō·hê ’aḇ·rā·hām wê·lō·hê nā·ḥō·wr ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇî·hem yiš·pə·ṭū ḇê·nê·nū ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yiš·šā·ḇa‘ bə·p̄a·ḥaḏ ’ā·ḇîw yiṣ·ḥāqWLC · 53

Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his relatives to eat a meal. And after they had eaten…, they spent the night on the mountain.

Early the next morning, Laban got up and kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then [he] left to return home.
