Chapter 38

Judah and Tamar

1

About that time, Judah… left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤏𐤃𐤋𐤌𐤉

וַֽיְהִי֙ הַהִ֔וא בָּעֵ֣ת יְהוּדָ֖ה מֵאֵ֣ת וַיֵּ֥רֶד אֶחָ֑יו וַיֵּ֛ט עַד־ אִ֥ישׁ וּשְׁמ֥וֹ חִירָֽה׃ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י way·hî ha·hi·w bā·‘êṯ yə·hū·ḏāh mê·’êṯ way·yê·reḏ ’e·ḥāw way·yêṭ ‘aḏ- ’îš ū·šə·mōw ḥî·rāh ‘ă·ḏul·lā·mîWLC · 1

There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua, and he took her as a wife and slept with her.

𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄

שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה וַיַּרְא־ בַּת־ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י אִ֥ישׁ וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ šām yə·hū·ḏāh way·yar- baṯ- kə·na·‘ă·nî ’îš ū·šə·mōw šū·a‘ way·yiq·qā·ḥe·hā way·yā·ḇō ’ê·le·hāWLC · 2

So she conceived and gave birth to a son, and [Judah] named him Er.

𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤓

וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ עֵֽר׃ wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ bên way·yiq·rā ’eṯ- šə·mōw ‘êrWLC · 3

Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.

𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤍

ע֖וֹד וַתַּ֥הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ אוֹנָֽן׃ ‘ō·wḏ wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ bên wat·tiq·rā ’eṯ- šə·mōw ’ō·w·nānWLC · 4

Then she gave birth to another… son and named him Shelah; it was at Chezib that she gave birth to him -.

𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤆𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤅

וַתֵּ֣לֶד וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃ wat·tê·leḏ wat·tō·sep̄ ‘ō·wḏ bên wat·tiq·rā ’eṯ- šə·mōw šê·lāh wə·hā·yāh ḇiḵ·zîḇ bə·liḏ·tāh ’ō·ṯōwWLC · 5

Now Judah acquired a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤓

יְהוּדָ֛ה וַיִּקַּ֧ח אִשָּׁ֖ה לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ וּשְׁמָ֖הּ תָּמָֽר׃ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yiq·qaḥ ’iš·šāh lə·‘êr bə·ḵō·w·rōw ū·šə·māh tā·mārWLC · 6

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; so the LORD put him to death.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤅

וַיְהִ֗י עֵ֚ר יְהוּדָ֔ה בְּכ֣וֹר רַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָֽה׃ וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ way·hî ‘êr yə·hū·ḏāh bə·ḵō·wr ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh way·mi·ṯê·hūWLC · 7

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with… your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤌 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊

יְהוּדָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לְאוֹנָ֔ן בֹּ֛א אֶל־ אָחִ֖יךָ אֵ֥שֶׁת וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ וְהָקֵ֥ם זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיךָ׃ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yō·mer lə·’ō·w·nān bō ’el- ’ā·ḥî·ḵā ’ê·šeṯ wə·yab·bêm ’ō·ṯāh wə·hā·qêm ze·ra‘ lə·’ā·ḥî·ḵāWLC · 8

But Onan knew that the offspring… would not belong to him; so whenever he would sleep with… his brother’s wife, he would spill his seed on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.

𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅

אוֹנָ֔ן וַיֵּ֣דַע כִּ֛י הַזָּ֑רַע וְהָיָ֞ה לֹּ֥א יִהְיֶ֣ה ל֖וֹ אִם־ בָּ֨א אֶל־ אָחִיו֙ אֵ֤שֶׁת וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה לְבִלְתִּ֥י נְתָן־ זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיו׃ ’ō·w·nān way·yê·ḏa‘ kî haz·zā·ra‘ wə·hā·yāh lō yih·yeh lōw ’im- bā ’el- ’ā·ḥîw ’ê·šeṯ wə·ši·ḥêṯ ’ar·ṣāh lə·ḇil·tî nə·ṯān- ze·ra‘ lə·’ā·ḥîwWLC · 9

What he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, so He put [Onan] to death as well -.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕 𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅

אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיֵּ֛רַע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה וַיָּ֖מֶת גַּם־ אֹתֽוֹ׃ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh way·yê·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh way·yā·meṯ gam- ’ō·ṯōwWLC · 10

Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.

יְהוּדָה֩ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כַּלָּת֜וֹ לְתָמָ֨ר שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה אָבִ֗יךְ בֵית־ עַד־ בְנִ֔י שֵׁלָ֣ה יִגְדַּל֙ כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר ה֖וּא פֶּן־ יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ כְּאֶחָ֑יו תָּמָ֔ר וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב אָבִֽיהָ׃ בֵּ֥ית yə·hū·ḏāh way·yō·mer kal·lā·ṯōw lə·ṯā·mār šə·ḇî ’al·mā·nāh ’ā·ḇîḵ ḇêṯ- ‘aḏ- ḇə·nî šê·lāh yiḡ·dal kî ’ā·mar hū pen- yā·mūṯ gam- kə·’e·ḥāw tā·mār wat·tê·leḵ wat·tê·šeḇ ’ā·ḇî·hā bêṯWLC · 11

After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers… at Timnah.

𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤁𐤕 𐤔𐤅𐤏 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤆𐤆𐤉 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤄

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים יְהוּדָ֑ה אֵֽשֶׁת־ בַּת־ שׁ֣וּעַ וַתָּ֖מָת יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם ה֗וּא רֵעֵ֥הוּ וְחִירָ֛ה הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י וַיַּ֜עַל עַל־ גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ תִּמְנָֽתָה׃ way·yir·bū hay·yā·mîm yə·hū·ḏāh ’ê·šeṯ- baṯ- šū·a‘ wat·tā·māṯ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yin·nā·ḥem hū rê·‘ê·hū wə·ḥî·rāh hā·‘ă·ḏul·lā·mî way·ya·‘al ‘al- gō·ză·zê ṣō·nōw tim·nā·ṯāhWLC · 12

When Tamar… was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,”

𐤋𐤕𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤂𐤆 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅

לְתָמָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֥ה וַיֻּגַּ֥ד חָמִ֛יךְ עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃ lə·ṯā·mār lê·mōr hin·nêh way·yug·gaḏ ḥā·mîḵ ‘ō·leh ṯim·nā·ṯāh lā·ḡōz ṣō·nōwWLC · 13

she removed her widow’s garments, covered her face with a veil to disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.

𐤅𐤕𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤐 𐤁𐤑𐤏𐤉𐤐 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤎 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄

וַתָּסַר֩ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ בִּגְדֵ֨י וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף בַּצָּעִיף֙ וַתְּכַ֤ס וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ כִּֽי־ שֵׁלָ֔ה גָדַ֣ל וְהִ֕וא לֹֽא־ נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ wat·tā·sar mê·‘ā·le·hā ’al·mə·nū·ṯāh biḡ·ḏê wat·tiṯ·‘al·lāp̄ baṣ·ṣā·‘îp̄ wat·tə·ḵas wat·tê·šeḇ bə·p̄e·ṯaḥ ‘ê·na·yim ’ă·šer ‘al- de·reḵ tim·nā·ṯāh kî rā·’ă·ṯāh kî- šê·lāh ḡā·ḏal wə·hi·w lō- nit·tə·nāh lōw lə·’iš·šāhWLC · 14

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.

יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ לְזוֹנָ֑ה כִּ֥י כִסְּתָ֖ה פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yir·’e·hā way·yaḥ·šə·ḇe·hā lə·zō·w·nāh kî ḵis·sə·ṯāh pā·ne·hāWLC · 15

  • Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with… you?” she inquired.

𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓

הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י הִ֑וא כַלָּת֖וֹ וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָֽבָה־ נָּא֙ אָב֣וֹא אֶל־ מַה־ תִּתֶּן־ לִּ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֵלָֽי׃ אֵלַ֔יִךְ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ had·de·reḵ kî lō yā·ḏa‘ kî hî ḵal·lā·ṯōw way·yêṭ ’ê·le·hā way·yō·mer hā·ḇāh- nā ’ā·ḇō·w ’el- mah- tit·ten- lī kî ṯā·ḇō·w ’ê·lāy ’ê·la·yiḵ wat·tō·merWLC · 16

“I will send you a young goat… from my flock,” [Judah] answered. But she replied, “Only if you leave me something as a pledge until you send it.”

אָנֹכִ֛י אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־ עִזִּ֖ים מִן־ הַצֹּ֑אן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־ תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן עַ֥ד שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî ’ă·šal·laḥ gə·ḏî- ‘iz·zîm min- haṣ·ṣōn way·yō·mer wat·tō·mer ’im- tit·tên ‘ê·rā·ḇō·wn ‘aḏ šā·lə·ḥe·ḵāWLC · 17

“What pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤕𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤋𐤅

מָ֣ה הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־ לָּךְ֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וַתֹּ֗אמֶר חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ וּמַטְּךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וַיִּתֶּן־ לָּ֛הּ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃ māh hā·‘ê·rā·ḇō·wn ’ă·šer ’et·ten- lāḵ way·yō·mer wat·tō·mer ḥō·ṯā·mə·ḵā ū·p̄ə·ṯî·le·ḵā ū·maṭ·ṭə·ḵā ’ă·šer bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā way·yit·ten- lāh way·yā·ḇō ’ê·le·hā wat·ta·har lōwWLC · 18

Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed her veil… and put on her widow’s garments again.

וַתָּ֣קָם וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ וַתָּ֥סַר צְעִיפָ֖הּ מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃ בִּגְדֵ֥י וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ wat·tā·qām wat·tê·leḵ wat·tā·sar ṣə·‘î·p̄āh mê·‘ā·le·hā ’al·mə·nū·ṯāh biḡ·ḏê wat·til·bašWLC · 19

Now when Judah sent his friend [Hirah] the Adullamite with the young goat… to collect the items he had left with… the woman, he could not find her.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄

He asked the men of that place, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?” “No shrine prostitute has been here,” they answered.

וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה הִ֥וא עַל־ הַדָּ֑רֶךְ בָעֵינַ֖יִם לֹא־ קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ way·yiš·’al ’eṯ- lê·mōr ’an·šê mə·qō·māh ’ay·yêh haq·qə·ḏê·šāh hî ‘al- had·dā·reḵ ḇā·‘ê·na·yim lō- qə·ḏê·šāh hā·yə·ṯāh ḇā·zeh way·yō·mə·rūWLC · 21

So [Hirah] returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her, and furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No shrine prostitute has been here.’”

“Let her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could not find her.”

About three months later, Judah was told “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself, and now she is pregnant…” “Bring her out!” Judah replied. “Let her be burned to death!”

As she was being brought out, [Tamar] sent a message to her father-in-law: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Please examine them. Whose seal and cord and staff are these?”

Judah recognized [the items] and said, “She is more righteous than I, since… I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again…

The Birth of Perez and Zerah

When the time came for [Tamar] to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

בְּעֵ֣ת וַיְהִ֖י לִדְתָּ֑הּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה תְאוֹמִ֖ים בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃ bə·‘êṯ way·hî liḏ·tāh wə·hin·nêh ṯə·’ō·w·mîm bə·ḇiṭ·nāhWLC · 27

And as she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied [it] around his wrist. “This one came out first,” she announced.

  • But when he pulled his hand… back and his brother came out, she said,… “You have broken out first…!” So he was named… Perez.

Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread around his wrist, and he was named… Zerah.
