Chapter 4
Cain and Abel
1
And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤇𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓
וְהָ֣אָדָ֔ם יָדַ֖ע אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ חַוָּ֣ה וַתַּ֙הַר֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד אֶת־ קַ֔יִן אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ קָנִ֥יתִי אִ֖ישׁ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר wə·hā·’ā·ḏām yā·ḏa‘ ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw ḥaw·wāh wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ ’eṯ- qa·yin ’eṯ- Yah·weh qā·nî·ṯî ’îš wat·tō·mer — WLC · 1

Later she gave birth to [Cain’s] brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.

וַתֹּ֣סֶף לָלֶ֔דֶת אֶת־ אָחִ֖יו אֶת־ הָ֑בֶל וַֽיְהִי־ הֶ֙בֶל֙ הָיָ֖ה רֹ֣עֵה צֹ֔אן וְקַ֕יִן עֹבֵ֥ד אֲדָמָֽה׃ wat·tō·sep̄ lā·le·ḏeṯ ’eṯ- ’ā·ḥîw ’eṯ- hā·ḇel way·hî- he·ḇel hā·yāh rō·‘êh ṣōn wə·qa·yin ‘ō·ḇêḏ ’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 2

So in the course of time -, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,

מִקֵּ֣ץ יָמִ֑ים וַֽיְהִ֖י קַ֜יִן וַיָּבֵ֨א מִפְּרִ֧י הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה מִנְחָ֖ה לַֽיהוָֽה׃ miq·qêṣ yā·mîm way·hî qa·yin way·yā·ḇê mip·pə·rî hā·’ă·ḏā·māh min·ḥāh Yah·weh — WLC · 3

while Abel… brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤁𐤄𐤍 𐤌𐤁𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤅
וְהֶ֨בֶל ה֛וּא גַם־ הֵבִ֥יא וּמֵֽחֶלְבֵהֶ֑ן מִבְּכֹר֥וֹת צֹאנ֖וֹ יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּ֣שַׁע אֶל־ הֶ֖בֶל וְאֶל־ מִנְחָתֽוֹ׃ wə·he·ḇel hū ḡam- hê·ḇî ū·mê·ḥel·ḇê·hen mib·bə·ḵō·rō·wṯ ṣō·nōw Yah·weh way·yi·ša‘ ’el- he·ḇel wə·’el- min·ḥā·ṯōw — WLC · 4

but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.

וְאֶל־ לֹ֣א שָׁעָ֑ה וְאֶל־ קַ֥יִן מִנְחָת֖וֹ לְקַ֙יִן֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּ֤חַר פָּנָֽיו׃ וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ wə·’el- lō šā·‘āh wə·’el- qa·yin min·ḥā·ṯōw lə·qa·yin mə·’ōḏ way·yi·ḥar pā·nāw way·yip·pə·lū — WLC · 5

“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “- and why has your countenance fallen?
𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅
לָ֚מָּה חָ֣רָה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ קָ֑יִן לָ֔ךְ וְלָ֖מָּה פָנֶֽיךָ׃ נָפְל֥וּ lām·māh ḥā·rāh way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’el- qā·yin lāḵ wə·lām·māh p̄ā·ne·ḵā nā·p̄ə·lū — WLC · 6

If you do what is right, {will} you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤑 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤅
אִם־ תֵּיטִיב֙ הֲל֤וֹא לֹ֣א שְׂאֵ֔ת וְאִם֙ תֵיטִ֔יב חַטָּ֣את רֹבֵ֑ץ לַפֶּ֖תַח תְּשׁ֣וּקָת֔וֹ וְאֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ וְאַתָּ֖ה תִּמְשָׁל־ בּֽוֹ׃ ’im- tê·ṭîḇ hă·lō·w lō śə·’êṯ wə·’im ṯê·ṭîḇ ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ rō·ḇêṣ lap·pe·ṯaḥ tə·šū·qā·ṯōw wə·’ê·le·ḵā wə·’at·tāh tim·šāl- bōw — WLC · 7

Then Cain said to his brother Abel, [“Let us go out to the field.”] And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

קַ֖יִן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ אָחִ֑יו הֶ֣בֶל וַֽיְהִי֙ בִּהְיוֹתָ֣ם בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה קַ֛יִן וַיָּ֥קָם אֶל־ אָחִ֖יו הֶ֥בֶל וַיַּהַרְגֵֽהוּ׃ qa·yin way·yō·mer ’el- ’ā·ḥîw he·ḇel way·hî bih·yō·w·ṯām baś·śā·ḏeh qa·yin way·yā·qām ’el- ’ā·ḥîw he·ḇel way·ya·har·ḡê·hū — WLC · 8

And the LORD said to Cain, “Where [is] your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “{Am} I my brother’s keeper?”

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ קַ֔יִן אֵ֖י אָחִ֑יךָ הֶ֣בֶל לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אָנֹֽכִי׃ אָחִ֖י הֲשֹׁמֵ֥ר Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- qa·yin ’ê ’ā·ḥî·ḵā he·ḇel lō yā·ḏa‘·tî way·yō·mer ’ā·nō·ḵî ’ā·ḥî hă·šō·mêr — WLC · 9

“What have you done?” replied [the LORD]. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤃𐤌𐤉 𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄
מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר ק֚וֹל אָחִ֔יךָ דְּמֵ֣י צֹעֲקִ֥ים אֵלַ֖י מִן־ הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ meh ‘ā·śî·ṯā way·yō·mer qō·wl ’ā·ḥî·ḵā də·mê ṣō·‘ă·qîm ’ê·lay min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 10

Now you [are] cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤃𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊
וְעַתָּ֖ה אָ֑תָּה אָר֣וּר מִן־ הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּצְתָ֣ה אֶת־ פִּ֔יהָ לָקַ֛חַת אֶת־ אָחִ֖יךָ דְּמֵ֥י מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’āt·tāh ’ā·rūr min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer pā·ṣə·ṯāh ’eṯ- pî·hā lā·qa·ḥaṯ ’eṯ- ’ā·ḥî·ḵā də·mê mî·yā·ḏe·ḵā — WLC · 11

When you till the ground, {it will} no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤎𐤐 𐤕𐤕 𐤊𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤏 𐤅𐤍𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑
כִּ֤י תַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה לֹֽא־ תֹסֵ֥ף תֵּת־ כֹּחָ֖הּ לָ֑ךְ תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה נָ֥ע וָנָ֖ד בָאָֽרֶץ׃ kî ṯa·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh lō- ṯō·sêp̄ têṯ- kō·ḥāh lāḵ tih·yeh nā‘ wā·nāḏ ḇā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 12

But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment [is] greater than I can bear.
𐤒𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤀
קַ֖יִן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה עֲוֺנִ֖י גָּד֥וֹל מִנְּשֹֽׂא׃ qa·yin way·yō·mer ’el- Yah·weh ‘ă·wō·nî gā·ḏō·wl min·nə·śō — WLC · 13

Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I {will} be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me {will} kill me.”
𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤂𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤏 𐤅𐤍𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤍𐤉
הֵן֩ אֹתִ֜י הַיּ֗וֹם גֵּרַ֨שְׁתָּ פְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה מֵעַל֙ וּמִפָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶסָּתֵ֑ר וְהָיִ֜יתִי נָ֤ע וָנָד֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וְהָיָ֥ה כָל־ מֹצְאִ֖י יַֽהַרְגֵֽנִי׃ hên ’ō·ṯî hay·yō·wm gê·raš·tā pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh mê·‘al ū·mip·pā·ne·ḵā ’es·sā·ṯêr wə·hā·yî·ṯî nā‘ wā·nāḏ bā·’ā·reṣ wə·hā·yāh ḵāl mō·ṣə·’î ya·har·ḡê·nî — WLC · 14

“Not so!” replied the LORD -. “If anyone slays Cain, [then Cain] will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one… who found him would kill him.

לָכֵן֙ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה ל֣וֹ כָּל־ הֹרֵ֣ג קַ֔יִן יֻקָּ֑ם שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם יְהוָ֤ה וַיָּ֨שֶׂם א֔וֹת לְקַ֙יִן֙ לְבִלְתִּ֥י כָּל־ מֹצְאֽוֹ׃ הַכּוֹת־ אֹת֖וֹ lā·ḵên way·yō·mer Yah·weh lōw kāl- hō·rêḡ qa·yin yuq·qām šiḇ·‘ā·ṯa·yim Yah·weh way·yā·śem ’ō·wṯ lə·qa·yin lə·ḇil·tî kāl- mō·ṣə·’ōw hak·kō·wṯ- ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 15

So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

קַ֖יִן וַיֵּ֥צֵא מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ נ֖וֹד קִדְמַת־ עֵֽדֶן׃ qa·yin way·yê·ṣê mil·lip̄·nê Yah·weh way·yê·šeḇ bə·’e·reṣ- nō·wḏ qiḏ·maṯ- ‘ê·ḏen — WLC · 16
The Descendants of Cain

And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then [Cain] built a city and named… [it] after his son Enoch.
𐤒𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊
קַ֙יִן֙ אֶת־ וַיֵּ֤דַע אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד אֶת־ חֲנ֑וֹךְ וַֽיְהִי֙ בֹּ֣נֶה עִ֔יר וַיִּקְרָא֙ שֵׁ֣ם הָעִ֔יר כְּשֵׁ֖ם בְּנ֥וֹ חֲנֽוֹךְ׃ qa·yin ’eṯ- way·yê·ḏa‘ ’iš·tōw wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ ’eṯ- ḥă·nō·wḵ way·hî bō·neh ‘îr way·yiq·rā šêm hā·‘îr kə·šêm bə·nōw ḥă·nō·wḵ — WLC · 17

Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃 𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤊
לַֽחֲנוֹךְ֙ אֶת־ וַיִּוָּלֵ֤ד עִירָ֔ד וְעִירָ֕ד יָלַ֖ד אֶת־ מְחֽוּיָאֵ֑ל וּמְחִיּיָאֵ֗ל יָלַד֙ אֶת־ מְת֣וּשָׁאֵ֔ל וּמְתוּשָׁאֵ֖ל יָלַ֥ד אֶת־ לָֽמֶךְ׃ la·ḥă·nō·wḵ ’eṯ- way·yiw·wā·lêḏ ‘î·rāḏ wə·‘î·rāḏ yā·laḏ ’eṯ- mə·ḥū·yā·’êl ū·mə·ḥî·y·yā·’êl yā·laḏ ’eṯ- mə·ṯū·šā·’êl ū·mə·ṯū·šā·’êl yā·laḏ ’eṯ- lā·meḵ — WLC · 18

And Lamech married… two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
𐤋𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤑𐤋𐤄
לֶ֖מֶךְ וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ ל֥וֹ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֑ים הָֽאַחַת֙ שֵׁ֤ם עָדָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית צִלָּֽה׃ le·meḵ way·yiq·qaḥ- lōw šə·tê nā·šîm hā·’a·ḥaṯ šêm ‘ā·ḏāh wə·šêm haš·šê·nîṯ ṣil·lāh — WLC · 19

Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and [raise] livestock.
𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤉𐤁𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄
עָדָ֖ה אֶת־ וַתֵּ֥לֶד יָבָ֑ל ה֣וּא הָיָ֔ה אֲבִ֕י יֹשֵׁ֥ב אֹ֖הֶל וּמִקְנֶֽה׃ ‘ā·ḏāh ’eṯ- wat·tê·leḏ yā·ḇāl hū hā·yāh ’ă·ḇî yō·šêḇ ’ō·hel ū·miq·neh — WLC · 20

And his brother’s name [was] Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.

And Zillah… gave birth to vvv Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister vvv of Tubal-cain [was] Naamah.

Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain [a man] for wounding me, a young man for striking me.

לֶ֜מֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְנָשָׁ֗יו עָדָ֤ה וְצִלָּה֙ שְׁמַ֣עַן קוֹלִ֔י נְשֵׁ֣י לֶ֔מֶךְ הַאְזֵ֖נָּה אִמְרָתִ֑י כִּ֣י אִ֤ישׁ הָרַ֙גְתִּי֙ לְפִצְעִ֔י וְיֶ֖לֶד לְחַבֻּרָתִֽי׃ le·meḵ way·yō·mer lə·nā·šāw ‘ā·ḏāh wə·ṣil·lāh šə·ma·‘an qō·w·lî nə·šê le·meḵ ha’·zên·nāh ’im·rā·ṯî kî ’îš hā·raḡ·tî lə·p̄iṣ·‘î wə·ye·leḏ lə·ḥab·bu·rā·ṯî — WLC · 23

Seth and Enosh

And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”

אָדָ֥ם עוֹד֙ וַיֵּ֨דַע אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ אֶת־ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁ֑ת כִּ֣י אֱלֹהִים֙ שָֽׁת־ לִ֤י אַחֵ֔ר זֶ֣רַע תַּ֣חַת הֶ֔בֶל כִּ֥י קָֽיִן׃ הֲרָג֖וֹ ’ā·ḏām ‘ō·wḏ way·yê·ḏa‘ ’iš·tōw ’eṯ- wat·tê·leḏ bên wat·tiq·rā ’eṯ- šə·mōw šêṯ kî ’ĕ·lō·hîm šāṯ- lî ’a·ḥêr ze·ra‘ ta·ḥaṯ he·ḇel kî qā·yin hă·rā·ḡōw — WLC · 25

And to Seth… also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time [men] began to call upon the name of the LORD.
