Chapter 6
Corruption on the Earth
1
Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤋 𐤋𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌
וַֽיְהִי֙ כִּֽי־ הָֽאָדָ֔ם הֵחֵ֣ל לָרֹ֖ב עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה וּבָנ֖וֹת יֻלְּד֥וּ לָהֶֽם׃ way·hî kî- hā·’ā·ḏām hê·ḥêl lā·rōḇ ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ū·ḇā·nō·wṯ yul·lə·ḏū lā·hem — WLC · 1

the sons of God saw that the daughters of men [were] beautiful, and they took as wives vvv whomever they chose.
𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤈𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤅
בְנֵי־ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־ וַיִּרְא֤וּ כִּ֥י בְּנ֣וֹת הָֽאָדָ֔ם הֵ֑נָּה טֹבֹ֖ת וַיִּקְח֤וּ לָהֶם֙ נָשִׁ֔ים מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּחָֽרוּ׃ ḇə·nê- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yir·’ū kî bə·nō·wṯ hā·’ā·ḏām hên·nāh ṭō·ḇōṯ way·yiq·ḥū lā·hem nā·šîm mik·kōl ’ă·šer bā·ḥā·rū — WLC · 2

So the LORD said, “My Spirit {will} not contend with man forever, for he [is] mortal; his days {shall} be 120… years.”

יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר רוּחִ֤י לֹֽא־ יָד֨וֹן בָֽאָדָם֙ לְעֹלָ֔ם בְּשַׁגַּ֖ם ה֣וּא בָשָׂ֑ר יָמָ֔יו וְהָי֣וּ מֵאָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים שָׁנָֽה׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer rū·ḥî lō- yā·ḏō·wn ḇā·’ā·ḏām lə·‘ō·lām bə·šag·gam hū ḇā·śār yā·māw wə·hā·yū mê·’āh wə·‘eś·rîm šā·nāh — WLC · 3

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—… and afterward as well…— when the sons of God had relations with… the daughters of men. And they bore them [children] who [became] the mighty men of old, men of renown.

הַנְּפִלִ֞ים הָי֣וּ בָאָרֶץ֮ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֒ וְגַ֣ם אַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֗ן אֲשֶׁ֨ר בְּנֵ֤י הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ יָבֹ֜אוּ אֶל־ בְּנ֣וֹת הָֽאָדָ֔ם וְיָלְד֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם הֵ֧מָּה הַגִּבֹּרִ֛ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מֵעוֹלָ֖ם אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַשֵּֽׁם׃פ han·nə·p̄i·lîm hā·yū ḇā·’ā·reṣ bay·yā·mîm hā·hêm wə·ḡam ’a·ḥă·rê- ḵên ’ă·šer bə·nê hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- bə·nō·wṯ hā·’ā·ḏām wə·yā·lə·ḏū lā·hem hêm·māh hag·gib·bō·rîm ’ă·šer mê·‘ō·w·lām ’an·šê haš·šêm — WLC · 4

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great upon the earth, and [that] every inclination of the thoughts of his heart [was] altogether evil all the time.

יְהוָ֔ה וַיַּ֣רְא כִּ֥י רָעַ֥ת הָאָדָ֖ם רַבָּ֛ה בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְכָל־ יֵ֙צֶר֙ מַחְשְׁבֹ֣ת לִבּ֔וֹ רַ֥ק רַ֖ע כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ Yah·weh way·yar kî rā·‘aṯ hā·’ā·ḏām rab·bāh bā·’ā·reṣ wə·ḵāl yê·ṣer maḥ·šə·ḇōṯ lib·bōw raq ra‘ kāl- hay·yō·wm — WLC · 5

And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם כִּֽי־ עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־ הָֽאָדָ֖ם בָּאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּתְעַצֵּ֖ב אֶל־ לִבּֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yin·nā·ḥem kî- ‘ā·śāh ’eṯ- hā·’ā·ḏām bā·’ā·reṣ way·yiṯ·‘aṣ·ṣêḇ ’el- lib·bōw — WLC · 6

So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth— every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air— for I am grieved that I have made them.”

Noah’s Favor with God

Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
𐤅𐤍𐤇 𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤐
וְנֹ֕חַ מָ֥צָא חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·nō·aḥ mā·ṣā ḥên bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh — WLC · 8

This [is] the account of Noah. Noah… was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.
𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤍𐤇 𐤍𐤇 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤇 𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌
אֵ֚לֶּה תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת נֹ֔חַ נֹ֗חַ אִ֥ישׁ הָיָ֖ה צַדִּ֛יק תָּמִ֥ים בְּדֹֽרֹתָ֑יו נֹֽחַ׃ הִֽתְהַלֶּךְ־ אֶת־ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים ’êl·leh tō·wl·ḏōṯ nō·aḥ nō·aḥ ’îš hā·yāh ṣad·dîq tā·mîm bə·ḏō·rō·ṯāw nō·aḥ hiṯ·hal·leḵ- ’eṯ- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 9

And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

אֶת־ נֹ֖חַ וַיּ֥וֹלֶד שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה בָנִ֑ים אֶת־ שֵׁ֖ם וְאֶת־ חָ֥ם יָֽפֶת׃ ’eṯ- nō·aḥ way·yō·w·leḏ šə·lō·šāh ḇā·nîm ’eṯ- šêm wə·’eṯ- ḥām yā·p̄eṯ — WLC · 10

Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, [and] full of violence.
𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤎
הָאָ֖רֶץ וַתִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים הָאָ֖רֶץ וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א חָמָֽס׃ hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiš·šā·ḥêṯ lip̄·nê hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tim·mā·lê ḥā·mās — WLC · 11

And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.

אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־ וַיַּ֧רְא הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהִנֵּ֣ה נִשְׁחָ֑תָה כִּֽי־ כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֛ר אֶת־ עַל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס הִשְׁחִ֧ית דַּרְכּ֖וֹ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yar hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hin·nêh niš·ḥā·ṯāh kî- kāl- bā·śār ’eṯ- ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ hiš·ḥîṯ dar·kōw — WLC · 12
Preparing the Ark

Then God said to Noah, “The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤍𐤇 𐤒𐤑 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
אֱלֹהִ֜ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְנֹ֗חַ קֵ֤ץ כָּל־ בָּשָׂר֙ בָּ֣א לְפָנַ֔י כִּֽי־ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם הָאָ֛רֶץ מָלְאָ֥ה חָמָ֖ס וְהִנְנִ֥י מַשְׁחִיתָ֖ם אֶת־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer lə·nō·aḥ qêṣ kāl- bā·śār bā lə·p̄ā·nay kî- mip·pə·nê·hem hā·’ā·reṣ mā·lə·’āh ḥā·mās wə·hin·nî maš·ḥî·ṯām ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 13

Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out.

עֲשֵׂ֤ה לְךָ֙ תֵּבַ֣ת גֹ֔פֶר עֲצֵי־ תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה קִנִּ֖ים אֶת־ הַתֵּבָ֑ה וְכָֽפַרְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֛הּ בַּכֹּֽפֶר׃ מִבַּ֥יִת וּמִח֖וּץ ‘ă·śêh lə·ḵā tê·ḇaṯ ḡō·p̄er ‘ă·ṣê- ta·‘ă·śeh qin·nîm ’eṯ- hat·tê·ḇāh wə·ḵā·p̄ar·tā ’ō·ṯāh bak·kō·p̄er mib·ba·yiṯ ū·mi·ḥūṣ — WLC · 14

And this is how you are to build it: The ark [is to be] 300… cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

וְזֶ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֖ה אֹתָ֑הּ הַתֵּבָ֔ה שְׁלֹ֧שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אַמָּ֗ה אֹ֚רֶךְ חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים אַמָּה֙ רָחְבָּ֔הּ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אַמָּ֖ה קוֹמָתָֽהּ׃ wə·zeh ’ă·šer ta·‘ă·śeh ’ō·ṯāh hat·tê·ḇāh šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ’am·māh ’ō·reḵ ḥă·miš·šîm ’am·māh rā·ḥə·bāh ū·šə·lō·šîm ’am·māh qō·w·mā·ṯāh — WLC · 15

You are to make a roof for the ark, finish [its walls] a cubit from the top, place a door in the side of the ark, and build lower, middle, and upper {decks}.

תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה צֹ֣הַר׀ לַתֵּבָ֗ה וְאֶל־ תְּכַלֶ֣נָּה אַמָּה֙ מִלְמַ֔עְלָה תָּשִׂ֑ים וּפֶ֥תַח בְּצִדָּ֣הּ הַתֵּבָ֖ה תַּֽעֲשֶֽׂהָ׃ תַּחְתִּיִּ֛ם שְׁנִיִּ֥ם וּשְׁלִשִׁ֖ים ta·‘ă·śeh ṣō·har lat·tê·ḇāh wə·’el- tə·ḵa·lɛn·nå̄h ’am·māh mil·ma‘·lāh tā·śîm ū·p̄e·ṯaḥ bə·ṣid·dāh hat·tê·ḇāh ta·‘ă·śe·hā taḥ·tî·yim šə·nî·yim ū·šə·li·šîm — WLC · 16

And behold, I will bring floodwaters… upon the earth to destroy every creature under the heavens that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.

וַאֲנִ֗י הִנְנִי֩ מֵבִ֨יא אֶת־ הַמַּבּ֥וּל מַ֙יִם֙ עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ לְשַׁחֵ֣ת כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֗ר מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁר־ בּוֹ֙ ר֣וּחַ חַיִּ֔ים כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ בָּאָ֖רֶץ יִגְוָֽע׃ wa·’ă·nî hin·nî mê·ḇî ’eṯ- ham·mab·būl ma·yim ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ lə·ša·ḥêṯ kāl- bā·śār mit·ta·ḥaṯ haš·šā·mā·yim ’ă·šer- bōw rū·aḥ ḥay·yîm kōl ’ă·šer- bā·’ā·reṣ yiḡ·wā‘ — WLC · 17

But I will establish My covenant with you, and you {will} enter… the ark— you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֥י אֶת־ בְּרִיתִ֖י אִתָּ֑ךְ וּבָאתָ֙ אֶל־ הַתֵּבָ֔ה אַתָּ֕ה וּבָנֶ֛יךָ וְאִשְׁתְּךָ֥ בָנֶ֖יךָ וּנְשֵֽׁי־ אִתָּֽךְ׃ wa·hă·qi·mō·ṯî ’eṯ- bə·rî·ṯî ’it·tāḵ ū·ḇā·ṯā ’el- hat·tê·ḇāh ’at·tāh ū·ḇā·ne·ḵā wə·’iš·tə·ḵā ḇā·ne·ḵā ū·nə·šê- ’it·tāḵ — WLC · 18

And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark— male and female -— to keep [them] alive with you.

Two of every kind of bird and animal [and] crawling creature… will come to you to be kept alive.

You are also to take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten and gather [it] as food for yourselves [and] for [the animals].”
