Chapter 8

The Ark Rests on Ararat

1

But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. And God sent a wind… over the earth, and the waters began to subside.

𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤍𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤅

אֶת־ אֱלֹהִים֙ וַיִּזְכֹּ֤ר נֹ֔חַ וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־ הַֽחַיָּה֙ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ בַּתֵּבָ֑ה אֱלֹהִ֥ים ר֙וּחַ֙ וַיַּעֲבֵ֨ר עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ הַמָּֽיִם׃ וַיָּשֹׁ֖כּוּ ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiz·kōr nō·aḥ wə·’êṯ kāl- ha·ḥay·yāh wə·’eṯ- kāl- hab·bə·hê·māh ’ă·šer ’it·tōw bat·tê·ḇāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm rū·aḥ way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ ham·mā·yim way·yā·šōk·kūWLC · 1

The springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained.

𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤕 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤀

מַעְיְנֹ֣ת תְּה֔וֹם וַֽאֲרֻבֹּ֖ת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַיִּסָּֽכְרוּ֙ הַגֶּ֖שֶׁם מִן־ הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ וַיִּכָּלֵ֥א ma‘·yə·nōṯ tə·hō·wm wa·’ă·rub·bōṯ haš·šā·mā·yim way·yis·sā·ḵə·rū hag·ge·šem min- haš·šā·mā·yim way·yik·kā·lêWLC · 2

The waters receded steadily… from the earth, and after 150… days the waters had gone down.

𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤎𐤓𐤅

הַמַּ֛יִם וַיָּשֻׁ֧בוּ הָל֣וֹךְ וָשׁ֑וֹב מֵעַ֥ל הָאָ֖רֶץ מִקְצֵ֕ה וּמְאַ֖ת חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים יֽוֹם׃ הַמַּ֔יִם וַיַּחְסְר֣וּ ham·ma·yim way·yā·šu·ḇū hā·lō·wḵ wā·šō·wḇ mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣ miq·ṣêh ū·mə·’aṯ ḥă·miš·šîm yō·wm ham·ma·yim way·yaḥ·sə·rūWLC · 3

On the seventeenth… day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤓𐤈

בְּשִׁבְעָה־ עָשָׂ֥ר י֖וֹם לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַתֵּבָה֙ וַתָּ֤נַח עַ֖ל הָרֵ֥י אֲרָרָֽט׃ bə·šiḇ·‘āh- ‘ā·śār yō·wm la·ḥō·ḏeš haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ba·ḥō·ḏeš hat·tê·ḇāh wat·tā·naḥ ‘al hā·rê ’ă·rā·rāṭWLC · 4

And the waters… continued to recede until the tenth month, [and] on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.

Noah Sends a Raven and a Dove

  • After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤒𐤑 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄

וַֽיְהִ֕י מִקֵּ֖ץ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֑וֹם נֹ֔חַ אֶת־ וַיִּפְתַּ֣ח חַלּ֥וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃ הַתֵּבָ֖ה way·hî miq·qêṣ ’ar·bā·‘îm yō·wm nō·aḥ ’eṯ- way·yip̄·taḥ ḥal·lō·wn ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh hat·tê·ḇāhWLC · 6

and sent out a raven. It kept flying back and forth… until the waters had dried up from the earth.

וַיְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־ הָֽעֹרֵ֑ב וַיֵּצֵ֤א יָצוֹא֙ וָשׁ֔וֹב עַד־ הַמַּ֖יִם יְבֹ֥שֶׁת מֵעַ֥ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃ way·šal·laḥ ’eṯ- hā·‘ō·rêḇ way·yê·ṣê yā·ṣō·w wā·šō·wḇ ‘aḏ- ham·ma·yim yə·ḇō·šeṯ mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 7

Then [Noah] sent out - a dove to see if the waters had receded from the surface of the ground.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄

וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ מֵאִתּ֑וֹ הַיּוֹנָ֖ה לִרְאוֹת֙ הַמַּ֔יִם הֲקַ֣לּוּ מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ way·šal·laḥ ’eṯ- mê·’it·tōw hay·yō·w·nāh lir·’ō·wṯ ham·ma·yim hă·qal·lū mê·‘al pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māhWLC · 8

But the dove found no place to rest her foot…, and she returned to him in the ark, because the waters [were still] covering the surface of all the earth. So he reached out his hand… and brought her back inside the ark.

𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤋𐤊𐤐 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄

הַיּוֹנָ֨ה מָצְאָה֩ וְלֹֽא־ מָנ֜וֹחַ לְכַף־ רַגְלָ֗הּ וַתָּ֤שָׁב אֵלָיו֙ אֶל־ הַתֵּבָ֔ה כִּי־ מַ֖יִם עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָדוֹ֙ וַיִּקָּחֶ֔הָ וַיָּבֵ֥א אֹתָ֛הּ אֵלָ֖יו אֶל־ הַתֵּבָֽה׃ hay·yō·w·nāh mā·ṣə·’āh wə·lō- mā·nō·w·aḥ lə·ḵap̄- raḡ·lāh wat·tā·šāḇ ’ê·lāw ’el- hat·tê·ḇāh kî- ma·yim ‘al- pə·nê ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw way·yiq·qā·ḥe·hā way·yā·ḇê ’ō·ṯāh ’ê·lāw ’el- hat·tê·ḇāhWLC · 9

[Noah] waited… seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.

𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄

וַיָּ֣חֶל ע֔וֹד שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲחֵרִ֑ים יָמִ֖ים וַיֹּ֛סֶף שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ הַיּוֹנָ֖ה מִן־ הַתֵּבָֽה׃ way·yā·ḥel ‘ō·wḏ šiḇ·‘aṯ ’ă·ḥê·rîm yā·mîm way·yō·sep̄ šal·laḥ ’eṯ- hay·yō·w·nāh min- hat·tê·ḇāhWLC · 10

And behold, the dove returned to him in the evening… with a freshly plucked olive leaf in her beak. So Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤈𐤓𐤐 𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַיּוֹנָה֙ וַתָּבֹ֨א אֵלָ֤יו לְעֵ֣ת עֶ֔רֶב טָרָ֣ף זַ֖יִת עֲלֵה־ בְּפִ֑יהָ נֹ֔חַ וַיֵּ֣דַע כִּי־ הַמַּ֖יִם קַ֥לּוּ מֵעַ֥ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·hin·nêh hay·yō·w·nāh wat·tā·ḇō ’ê·lāw lə·‘êṯ ‘e·reḇ ṭā·rāp̄ za·yiṯ ‘ă·lêh- bə·p̄î·hā nō·aḥ way·yê·ḏa‘ kî- ham·ma·yim qal·lū mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 11

[And] Noah waited… seven more days and sent out the dove {again}, but this time… she did not return to him.

𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅

וַיִּיָּ֣חֶל ע֔וֹד שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲחֵרִ֑ים יָמִ֖ים וַיְשַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־ הַיּוֹנָ֔ה יָסְפָ֥ה עֽוֹד׃ וְלֹֽא־ שׁוּב־ אֵלָ֖יו way·yî·yā·ḥel ‘ō·wḏ šiḇ·‘aṯ ’ă·ḥê·rîm yā·mîm way·šal·laḥ ’eṯ- hay·yō·w·nāh yā·sə·p̄āh ‘ō·wḏ wə·lō- šūḇ- ’ê·lāwWLC · 12

Exiting the Ark

  • In [Noah’s] six hundred and first year, on the first day of the first month, the waters had dried up from the earth. So Noah removed the covering from the ark and saw… that the surface of the ground was dry.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤍𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅

וַֽ֠יְהִי וְשֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֜וֹת בְּאַחַ֨ת שָׁנָ֗ה בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ בָּֽרִאשׁוֹן֙ הַמַּ֖יִם חָֽרְב֥וּ מֵעַ֣ל הָאָ֑רֶץ נֹ֙חַ֙ אֶת־ וַיָּ֤סַר מִכְסֵ֣ה הַתֵּבָ֔ה וַיַּ֕רְא וְהִנֵּ֥ה פְּנֵ֥י הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ חָֽרְב֖וּ way·hî wə·šêš- mê·’ō·wṯ bə·’a·ḥaṯ šā·nāh bə·’e·ḥāḏ la·ḥō·ḏeš bā·ri·šō·wn ham·ma·yim ḥā·rə·ḇū mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣ nō·aḥ ’eṯ- way·yā·sar miḵ·sêh hat·tê·ḇāh way·yar wə·hin·nêh pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ḥā·rə·ḇūWLC · 13

By the twenty-seventh… day… of the second month, the earth was fully dry.

בְּשִׁבְעָ֧ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים י֖וֹם לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י וּבַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס יָבְשָׁ֖ה bə·šiḇ·‘āh wə·‘eś·rîm yō·wm la·ḥō·ḏeš haš·šê·nî ū·ḇa·ḥō·ḏeš hā·’ā·reṣ yā·ḇə·šāhWLC · 14

Then God said to Noah,…

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤇 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ נֹ֥חַ לֵאמֹֽר׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ḏab·bêr ’el- nō·aḥ lê·mōrWLC · 15

“Come out of the ark, you and your wife, along with your sons and [their] wives.

𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉

צֵ֖א מִן־ הַתֵּבָ֑ה אַתָּ֕ה וְאִשְׁתְּךָ֛ אִתָּֽךְ׃ וּבָנֶ֥יךָ בָנֶ֖יךָ וּנְשֵֽׁי־ ṣê min- hat·tê·ḇāh ’at·tāh wə·’iš·tə·ḵā ’it·tāḵ ū·ḇā·ne·ḵā ḇā·ne·ḵā ū·nə·šê-WLC · 16

17

Bring out… all the living creatures… that are with you birds, livestock, and everything that crawls upon the ground— so that they can spread out over the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon [it].”

הוֹצֵא אִתָּ֑ךְ כָּל־ הַחַיָּ֨ה מִכָּל־ בָּשָׂ֗ר אֲשֶֽׁר־ אִתְּךָ֜ בָּע֧וֹף וּבַבְּהֵמָ֛ה וּבְכָל־ הָרֶ֛מֶשׂ הָרֹמֵ֥שׂ עַל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ וְשָֽׁרְצ֣וּ בָאָ֔רֶץ וּפָר֥וּ וְרָב֖וּ עַל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ hō·ṣē ’it·tāḵ kāl- ha·ḥay·yāh mik·kāl bā·śār ’ă·šer- ’it·tə·ḵā bā·‘ō·wp̄ ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māh ū·ḇə·ḵāl hā·re·meś hā·rō·mêś ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·šā·rə·ṣū ḇā·’ā·reṣ ū·p̄ā·rū wə·rā·ḇū ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 17

So Noah came out, along with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives.

נֹ֑חַ וַיֵּ֖צֵא־ אִתּֽוֹ׃ וּבָנָ֛יו וְאִשְׁתּ֥וֹ בָנָ֖יו וּנְשֵֽׁי־ nō·aḥ way·yê·ṣê- ’it·tōw ū·ḇā·nāw wə·’iš·tōw ḇā·nāw ū·nə·šê-WLC · 18

Every living creature, every creeping thing, and every bird— everything that moves upon the earth— came out of the ark, kind by kind.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤌𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌

כָּל־ הַֽחַיָּ֗ה כָּל־ הָרֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ וְכָל־ הָע֔וֹף כֹּ֖ל רוֹמֵ֣שׂ עַל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ יָצְא֖וּ מִן־ הַתֵּבָֽה׃ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם kāl- ha·ḥay·yāh kāl- hā·re·meś wə·ḵāl hā·‘ō·wp̄ kōl rō·w·mêś ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ yā·ṣə·’ū min- hat·tê·ḇāh lə·miš·pə·ḥō·ṯê·hemWLC · 19

Noah Builds an Altar

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD. And taking from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar.

When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again… will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of [his] heart is evil from his youth. And never again… will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.

As long as… the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall never cease.”
