The Dedication of the Firstborn

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Consecrate to Me every firstborn male. The firstborn from every womb among the Israelites… belongs to Me, [both] of man and beast.”

קַדֶּשׁ־ לִ֨י כָל־ בְּכ֜וֹר פֶּ֤טֶר כָּל־ רֶ֙חֶם֙ בִּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֽוּא׃ לִ֖י בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה qad·deš- lî ḵāl bə·ḵō·wr pe·ṭer kāl- re·ḥem biḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl hū lî bā·’ā·ḏām ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māh — WLC · 2

So Moses told… the people, “Remember this day, [the day] you came out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; for the LORD brought you out of it by the strength of His hand. And nothing leavened shall be eaten.

מֹשֶׁ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הָעָ֗ם זָכ֞וֹר אֶת־ הַזֶּה֙ הַיּ֤וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְצָאתֶ֤ם מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ מִבֵּ֣ית עֲבָדִ֔ים כִּ֚י יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם הוֹצִ֧יא מִזֶּ֑ה בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֔ד וְלֹ֥א חָמֵֽץ׃ יֵאָכֵ֖ל mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- hā·‘ām zā·ḵō·wr ’eṯ- haz·zeh hay·yō·wm ’ă·šer yə·ṣā·ṯem mim·miṣ·ra·yim mib·bêṯ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm kî Yah·weh ’eṯ·ḵem hō·w·ṣî miz·zeh bə·ḥō·zeq yāḏ wə·lō ḥā·mêṣ yê·’ā·ḵêl — WLC · 3

Today, in the month of Abib, you are leaving.
𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌
הַיּ֖וֹם בְּחֹ֖דֶשׁ הָאָבִֽיב׃ אַתֶּ֣ם יֹצְאִ֑ים hay·yō·wm bə·ḥō·ḏeš hā·’ā·ḇîḇ ’at·tem yō·ṣə·’îm — WLC · 4

And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites— [the land] He swore to your fathers that He would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey— you shall keep this service in this month.

וְהָיָ֣ה כִֽי־ יְהוָ֡ה יְבִֽיאֲךָ֣ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽ֠כְּנַעֲנִי וְהַחִתִּ֨י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י וְהַחִוִּ֣י וְהַיְבוּסִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֤ע לַאֲבֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ לָ֣תֶת לָ֔ךְ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ וְעָבַדְתָּ֛ אֶת־ הַזֹּ֖את הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ wə·hā·yāh ḵî- Yah·weh yə·ḇî·’ă·ḵā ’el- ’e·reṣ hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·ha·ḥit·tî wə·hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî ’ă·šer niš·ba‘ la·’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā lā·ṯeṯ lāḵ ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇāš wə·‘ā·ḇaḏ·tā ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hā·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh haz·zeh ba·ḥō·ḏeš — WLC · 5

For seven days you are to eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD.

שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים תֹּאכַ֣ל מַצֹּ֑ת הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י וּבַיּוֹם֙ חַ֖ג לַיהוָֽה׃ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm tō·ḵal maṣ·ṣōṯ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm ḥaḡ Yah·weh — WLC · 6

Unleavened bread shall be eaten during those seven days. Nothing leavened may be found among you, nor shall leaven be found anywhere within your borders.
𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤑 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤁𐤋𐤊
מַצּוֹת֙ יֵֽאָכֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת שִׁבְעַ֣ת הַיָּמִ֑ים וְלֹֽא־ חָמֵ֗ץ יֵרָאֶ֨ה לְךָ֜ וְלֹֽא־ שְׂאֹ֖ר יֵרָאֶ֥ה בְּכָל־ לְךָ֛ גְּבֻלֶֽךָ׃ maṣ·ṣō·wṯ yê·’ā·ḵêl ’êṯ šiḇ·‘aṯ hay·yā·mîm wə·lō- ḥā·mêṣ yê·rā·’eh lə·ḵā wə·lō- śə·’ōr yê·rā·’eh bə·ḵāl lə·ḵā gə·ḇu·le·ḵā — WLC · 7

And on that… day you are to explain to your son, ‘This is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’

הַה֖וּא לֵאמֹ֑ר בַּיּ֥וֹם וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לְבִנְךָ֔ בַּעֲב֣וּר זֶ֗ה יְהוָה֙ עָשָׂ֤ה לִ֔י בְּצֵאתִ֖י מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ ha·hū lê·mōr bay·yō·wm wə·hig·gaḏ·tā lə·ḇin·ḵā ba·‘ă·ḇūr zeh Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh lî bə·ṣê·ṯî mim·miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 8

It shall be a sign for you on your hand and a reminder on your forehead… that the Law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For with a mighty hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌
וְהָיָה֩ לְא֜וֹת לְךָ֨ עַל־ יָדְךָ֗ וּלְזִכָּרוֹן֙ בֵּ֣ין עֵינֶ֔יךָ לְמַ֗עַן תּוֹרַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה תִּהְיֶ֛ה בְּפִ֑יךָ כִּ֚י חֲזָקָ֔ה בְּיָ֣ד יְהֹוָ֖ה הוֹצִֽאֲךָ֥ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ wə·hā·yāh lə·’ō·wṯ lə·ḵā ‘al- yā·ḏə·ḵā ū·lə·zik·kā·rō·wn bên ‘ê·ne·ḵā lə·ma·‘an tō·w·raṯ Yah·weh tih·yeh bə·p̄î·ḵā kî ḥă·zā·qāh bə·yāḏ Yah·weh hō·w·ṣi·’ă·ḵā mim·miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 9

Therefore you shall keep this statute at the appointed time year after year.

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֛ אֶת־ הַזֹּ֖את הַחֻקָּ֥ה לְמוֹעֲדָ֑הּ מִיָּמִ֖ים יָמִֽימָה׃ס wə·šā·mar·tā ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ ha·ḥuq·qāh lə·mō·w·‘ă·ḏāh mî·yā·mîm yā·mî·māh — WLC · 10

And after the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as He swore to you and your fathers,
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊
וְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ יְבִֽאֲךָ֤ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י וּנְתָנָ֖הּ לָֽךְ׃ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נִשְׁבַּ֥ע לְךָ֖ וְלַֽאֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ wə·hā·yāh kî- Yah·weh yə·ḇi·’ă·ḵā ’el- ’e·reṣ hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî ū·nə·ṯā·nāh lāḵ ka·’ă·šer niš·ba‘ lə·ḵā wə·la·’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 11

you are to present to the LORD the firstborn male of every womb. All the firstborn… males of your… livestock [belong to] the LORD.
𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤈𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤈𐤓 𐤔𐤂𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ֥ לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה פֶּֽטֶר־ כָל־ רֶ֖חֶם וְכָל־ פֶּ֣טֶר׀ שֶׁ֣גֶר אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַזְּכָרִ֖ים יִהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֛ בְּהֵמָ֗ה לַיהוָֽה׃ wə·ha·‘ă·ḇar·tā Yah·weh pe·ṭer- ḵāl re·ḥem wə·ḵāl pe·ṭer še·ḡer ’ă·šer haz·zə·ḵā·rîm yih·yeh lə·ḵā bə·hê·māh Yah·weh — WLC · 12

You must redeem every firstborn donkey with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, you are to break its neck. And every firstborn… of your sons you must redeem.

תִּפְדֶּ֣ה וְכָל־ פֶּ֤טֶר חֲמֹר֙ בְשֶׂ֔ה וְאִם־ לֹ֥א תִפְדֶּ֖ה וַעֲרַפְתּ֑וֹ וְכֹ֨ל בְּכ֥וֹר אָדָ֛ם בְּבָנֶ֖יךָ תִּפְדֶּֽה׃ tip̄·deh wə·ḵāl pe·ṭer ḥă·mōr ḇə·śeh wə·’im- lō ṯip̄·deh wa·‘ă·rap̄·tōw wə·ḵōl bə·ḵō·wr ’ā·ḏām bə·ḇā·ne·ḵā tip̄·deh — WLC · 13

- In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you are to tell him, ‘With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤌
וְהָיָ֞ה מָחָ֖ר כִּֽי־ בִנְךָ֛ יִשְׁאָלְךָ֥ מַה־ זֹּ֑את לֵאמֹ֣ר וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֔יו בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֗ד יְהוָ֛ה הוֹצִיאָ֧נוּ מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃ wə·hā·yāh mā·ḥār kî- ḇin·ḵā yiš·’ā·lə·ḵā mah- zōṯ lê·mōr wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw bə·ḥō·zeq yāḏ Yah·weh hō·w·ṣî·’ā·nū mim·miṣ·ra·yim mib·bêṯ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm — WLC · 14

And when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both of man and beast. This is why… I sacrifice to the LORD the firstborn male of every womb, but I redeem all the firstborn of my sons.’
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤊𐤓 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤈𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤐𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉
וַיְהִ֗י כִּֽי־ פַרְעֹה֮ הִקְשָׁ֣ה לְשַׁלְּחֵנוּ֒ יְהֹוָ֤ה וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג כָּל־ בְּכוֹר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מִבְּכֹ֥ר אָדָ֖ם וְעַד־ בְּכ֣וֹר בְּהֵמָ֑ה עַל־ כֵּן֩ אֲנִ֨י זֹבֵ֜חַ לַֽיהוָ֗ה פֶּ֤טֶר הַזְּכָרִ֔ים כָּל־ רֶ֙חֶם֙ אֶפְדֶּֽה׃ וְכָל־ בְּכ֥וֹר בָּנַ֖י way·hî kî- p̄ar·‘ōh hiq·šāh lə·šal·lə·ḥê·nū Yah·weh way·ya·hă·rōḡ kāl- bə·ḵō·wr bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mib·bə·ḵōr ’ā·ḏām wə·‘aḏ- bə·ḵō·wr bə·hê·māh ‘al- kên ’ă·nî zō·ḇê·aḥ Yah·weh pe·ṭer haz·zə·ḵā·rîm kāl- re·ḥem ’ep̄·deh wə·ḵāl bə·ḵō·wr bā·nay — WLC · 15

So it shall serve as a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead…, for with a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”

וְהָיָ֤ה לְאוֹת֙ עַל־ יָ֣דְכָ֔ה וּלְטוֹטָפֹ֖ת בֵּ֣ין עֵינֶ֑יךָ כִּ֚י בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֔ד יְהוָ֖ה הוֹצִיאָ֥נוּ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ס wə·hā·yāh lə·’ō·wṯ ‘al- yā·ḏə·ḵāh ū·lə·ṭō·w·ṭā·p̄ōṯ bên ‘ê·ne·ḵā kî bə·ḥō·zeq yāḏ Yah·weh hō·w·ṣî·’ā·nū mim·miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 16
The Pillars of Cloud and Fire

- When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, though it was shorter. For God… said, “If [the people] face war, [they] might change their minds and return to Egypt.”

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because {Joseph had made} the sons of Israel swear a solemn oath… when he said, “God will surely attend to… you, and then you must carry my bones with you from this place.”

They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.
