Chapter 15
The Song at the Sea

Then Moses and the Israelites… sang this song to the LORD -: “I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted… The horse and rider He has thrown into the sea.

The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. He [is] my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

The LORD is a warrior…, the LORD is His name.

Pharaoh’s chariots and army He has cast into the sea; the finest of his officers are drowned in the Red Sea.

The depths have covered them; they sank [there] like a stone.

Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power; Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy.

You overthrew Your adversaries by Your great majesty. You unleashed Your burning wrath; it consumed them like stubble.

תַּהֲרֹ֣ס קָמֶ֑יךָ וּבְרֹ֥ב גְּאוֹנְךָ֖ תְּשַׁלַּח֙ חֲרֹ֣נְךָ֔ יֹאכְלֵ֖מוֹ כַּקַּֽשׁ׃ ta·hă·rōs qā·me·ḵā ū·ḇə·rōḇ gə·’ō·wn·ḵā tə·šal·laḥ ḥă·rō·nə·ḵā yō·ḵə·lê·mōw kaq·qaš — WLC · 7

At the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up; like a wall the currents stood firm; the depths congealed in the heart of the sea.

וּבְר֤וּחַ אַפֶּ֙יךָ֙ מַ֔יִם נֶ֣עֶרְמוּ כְמוֹ־ נֵ֖ד נֹזְלִ֑ים נִצְּב֥וּ תְהֹמֹ֖ת קָֽפְא֥וּ בְּלֶב־ יָֽם׃ ū·ḇə·rū·aḥ ’ap·pe·ḵā ma·yim ne·‘er·mū ḵə·mōw- nêḏ nō·zə·lîm niṣ·ṣə·ḇū ṯə·hō·mōṯ qā·p̄ə·’ū bə·leḇ- yām — WLC · 8

The enemy declared, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.’

אוֹיֵ֛ב אָמַ֥ר אֶרְדֹּ֥ף אַשִּׂ֖יג אֲחַלֵּ֣ק שָׁלָ֑ל תִּמְלָאֵ֣מוֹ נַפְשִׁ֔י אָרִ֣יק חַרְבִּ֔י יָדִֽי׃ תּוֹרִישֵׁ֖מוֹ ’ō·w·yêḇ ’ā·mar ’er·dōp̄ ’aś·śîḡ ’ă·ḥal·lêq šā·lāl tim·lā·’ê·mōw nap̄·šî ’ā·rîq ḥar·bî yā·ḏî tō·w·rî·šê·mōw — WLC · 9

But You blew with Your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

נָשַׁ֥פְתָּ בְרוּחֲךָ֖ יָ֑ם כִּסָּ֣מוֹ צָֽלֲלוּ֙ כַּֽעוֹפֶ֔רֶת אַדִּירִֽים׃ בְּמַ֖יִם nā·šap̄·tā ḇə·rū·ḥă·ḵā yām kis·sā·mōw ṣā·lă·lū ka·‘ō·w·p̄e·reṯ ’ad·dî·rîm bə·ma·yim — WLC · 10

Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You— majestic in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders?

מִֽי־ בָּֽאֵלִם֙ כָמֹ֤כָה יְהוָ֔ה מִ֥י כָּמֹ֖כָה נֶאְדָּ֣ר בַּקֹּ֑דֶשׁ נוֹרָ֥א תְהִלֹּ֖ת עֹ֥שֵׂה פֶֽלֶא׃ mî- bā·’ê·lim ḵā·mō·ḵāh Yah·weh mî kā·mō·ḵāh ne’·dār baq·qō·ḏeš nō·w·rā ṯə·hil·lōṯ ‘ō·śêh p̄e·le — WLC · 11

You stretched out Your right hand, and the earth swallowed them up.

נָטִ֙יתָ֙ יְמִ֣ינְךָ֔ אָֽרֶץ׃ תִּבְלָעֵ֖מוֹ nā·ṭî·ṯā yə·mî·nə·ḵā ’ā·reṣ tiḇ·lā·‘ê·mōw — WLC · 12

With loving devotion You will lead the people… You have redeemed; with Your strength You will guide them to Your holy dwelling.

בְחַסְדְּךָ֖ נָחִ֥יתָ עַם־ ז֣וּ גָּאָ֑לְתָּ בְעָזְּךָ֖ נֵהַ֥לְתָּ אֶל־ קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ נְוֵ֥ה ḇə·ḥas·də·ḵā nā·ḥî·ṯā ‘am- zū gā·’ā·lə·tā ḇə·‘āz·zə·ḵā nê·hal·tā ’el- qāḏ·še·ḵā nə·wêh — WLC · 13

The nations will hear [and] tremble; anguish will grip the dwellers of Philistia.

עַמִּ֖ים שָֽׁמְע֥וּ יִרְגָּז֑וּן חִ֣יל אָחַ֔ז יֹשְׁבֵ֖י פְּלָֽשֶׁת׃ ‘am·mîm šā·mə·‘ū yir·gā·zūn ḥîl ’ā·ḥaz yō·šə·ḇê pə·lā·šeṯ — WLC · 14
15
Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed; trembling will seize the leaders of Moab; those who dwell in Canaan will melt away…,
𐤀𐤆 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤐𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤍𐤌𐤂𐤅 𐤊𐤋
אָ֤ז אַלּוּפֵ֣י אֱד֔וֹם נִבְהֲלוּ֙ רָ֑עַד יֹֽאחֲזֵ֖מוֹ אֵילֵ֣י מוֹאָ֔ב יֹשְׁבֵ֥י כְנָֽעַן׃ נָמֹ֕גוּ כֹּ֖ל ’āz ’al·lū·p̄ê ’ĕ·ḏō·wm niḇ·hă·lū rā·‘aḏ yō·ḥă·zê·mōw ’ê·lê mō·w·’āḇ yō·šə·ḇê ḵə·nā·‘an nā·mō·ḡū kōl — WLC · 15

and terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of Your arm they will be as still as a stone until Your people pass by, O LORD, until the people You have bought pass by.

אֵימָ֙תָה֙ וָפַ֔חַד תִּפֹּ֨ל עֲלֵיהֶ֤ם בִּגְדֹ֥ל זְרוֹעֲךָ֖ יִדְּמ֣וּ כָּאָ֑בֶן עַד־ עַמְּךָ֙ יַעֲבֹ֤ר יְהוָ֔ה עַֽד־ עַם־ ז֥וּ קָנִֽיתָ׃ יַעֲבֹ֖ר ’ê·mā·ṯāh wā·p̄a·ḥaḏ tip·pōl ‘ă·lê·hem biḡ·ḏōl zə·rō·w·‘ă·ḵā yid·də·mū kā·’ā·ḇen ‘aḏ- ‘am·mə·ḵā ya·‘ă·ḇōr Yah·weh ‘aḏ- ‘am- zū qā·nî·ṯā ya·‘ă·ḇōr — WLC · 16

You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance— the place, O LORD, You have prepared for Your dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, Your hands have established.

תְּבִאֵ֗מוֹ וְתִטָּעֵ֙מוֹ֙ בְּהַ֣ר נַחֲלָֽתְךָ֔ מָכ֧וֹן יְהוָ֑ה פָּעַ֖לְתָּ לְשִׁבְתְּךָ֛ מִקְּדָ֕שׁ אֲדֹנָ֖י יָדֶֽיךָ׃ כּוֹנְנ֥וּ tə·ḇi·’ê·mōw wə·ṯiṭ·ṭā·‘ê·mōw bə·har na·ḥă·lā·ṯə·ḵā mā·ḵō·wn Yah·weh pā·‘al·tā lə·šiḇ·tə·ḵā miq·qə·ḏāš ’ă·ḏō·nāy yā·ḏe·ḵā kō·wn·nū — WLC · 17

The LORD will reign forever and ever!”

For when Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites… walked through the sea on dry ground.

כִּ֣י פַּרְעֹ֜ה ס֨וּס בְּרִכְבּ֤וֹ וּבְפָרָשָׁיו֙ בָא֩ בַּיָּ֔ם יְהוָ֛ה מֵ֣י הַיָּ֑ם וַיָּ֧שֶׁב עֲלֵהֶ֖ם אֶת־ וּבְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הָלְכ֥וּ בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיָּֽם׃פ בַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה kî par·‘ōh sūs bə·riḵ·bōw ū·ḇə·p̄ā·rā·šāw ḇā bay·yām Yah·weh mê hay·yām way·yā·šeḇ ‘ă·lê·hem ’eṯ- ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl hā·lə·ḵū bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yām ḇay·yab·bā·šāh — WLC · 19

Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women… followed her with tambourines and dancing.

מִרְיָ֨ם הַנְּבִיאָ֜ה אַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶת־ אֲח֧וֹת וַתִּקַּח֩ הַתֹּ֖ף בְּיָדָ֑הּ כָֽל־ הַנָּשִׁים֙ אַחֲרֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּצֶ֤אןָ בְּתֻפִּ֖ים וּבִמְחֹלֹֽת׃ mir·yām han·nə·ḇî·’āh ’a·hă·rōn ’eṯ- ’ă·ḥō·wṯ wat·tiq·qaḥ hat·tōp̄ bə·yā·ḏāh ḵāl han·nā·šîm ’a·ḥă·re·hā wat·tê·ṣe·nā bə·ṯup·pîm ū·ḇim·ḥō·lōṯ — WLC · 20

The Waters of Marah

Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the Desert of Shur. For three days they walked in the desert without finding water.

And when they came to Marah, they could not drink the water [there] because it was bitter. (That is why… it was named… Marah.)

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ מָרָ֔תָה יָֽכְל֗וּ וְלֹ֣א לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת מַ֙יִם֙ מִמָּרָ֔ה כִּ֥י הֵ֑ם מָרִ֖ים עַל־ כֵּ֥ן קָרָֽא־ שְׁמָ֖הּ מָרָֽה׃ way·yā·ḇō·’ū mā·rā·ṯāh yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō liš·tōṯ ma·yim mim·mā·rāh kî hêm mā·rîm ‘al- kên qā·rā- šə·māh mā·rāh — WLC · 23

So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”

And [Moses] cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log. And when he cast it into the waters, [they] were sweetened. There [the LORD] made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He tested them,

וַיִּצְעַ֣ק אֶל־ יְהוָ֗ה יְהוָה֙ וַיּוֹרֵ֤הוּ עֵ֔ץ וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֙ אֶל־ הַמַּ֔יִם הַמָּ֑יִם וַֽיִּמְתְּק֖וּ שָׁ֣ם שָׂ֥ם ל֛וֹ חֹ֥ק וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט וְשָׁ֥ם נִסָּֽהוּ׃ way·yiṣ·‘aq ’el- Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yō·w·rê·hū ‘êṣ way·yaš·lêḵ ’el- ham·ma·yim ham·mā·yim way·yim·tə·qū šām śām lōw ḥōq ū·miš·pāṭ wə·šām nis·sā·hū — WLC · 25

saying, “If you will listen carefully… to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, [then] I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אִם־ שָׁמ֨וֹעַ תִּשְׁמַ֜ע לְק֣וֹל׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה וְהַיָּשָׁ֤ר בְּעֵינָיו֙ וְהַֽאֲזַנְתָּ֙ לְמִצְוֺתָ֔יו וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֖ כָּל־ חֻקָּ֑יו לֹא־ שַׂ֤מְתִּי עָלֶ֔יךָ כָּֽל־ הַמַּֽחֲלָ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־ אָשִׂ֣ים בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה רֹפְאֶֽךָ׃ס way·yō·mer ’im- šā·mō·w·a‘ tiš·ma‘ lə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ta·‘ă·śeh wə·hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nāw wə·ha·’ă·zan·tā lə·miṣ·wō·ṯāw wə·šā·mar·tā kāl- ḥuq·qāw lō- śam·tî ‘ā·le·ḵā kāl- ham·ma·ḥă·lāh ’ă·šer- ’ā·śîm ḇə·miṣ·ra·yim kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh rō·p̄ə·’e·ḵā — WLC · 26

Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve… springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the waters.
