Chapter 17

Water from the Rock

Then the whole congregation… of Israel left the Desert of Sin, moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤏𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤎𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤌𐤎𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤐𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤕

כָּל־ עֲדַ֨ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל וַ֠יִּסְעוּ מִמִּדְבַּר־ סִ֛ין לְמַסְעֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־ יְהוָ֑ה פִּ֣י וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ בִּרְפִידִ֔ים וְאֵ֥ין מַ֖יִם הָעָֽם׃ לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yis·‘ū mim·miḏ·bar- sîn lə·mas·‘ê·hem ‘al- Yah·weh pî way·ya·ḥă·nū bir·p̄î·ḏîm wə·’ên ma·yim hā·‘ām liš·tōṯWLC · 1

So the people contended with Moses “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”

הָעָם֙ וַיָּ֤רֶב עִם־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ תְּנוּ־ לָ֥נוּ מַ֖יִם וְנִשְׁתֶּ֑ה מַה־ תְּרִיבוּן֙ עִמָּדִ֔י מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ מַה־ תְּנַסּ֖וּן אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ hā·‘ām way·yā·reḇ ‘im- mō·šeh way·yō·mə·rū tə·nū- lā·nū ma·yim wə·niš·teh mah- tə·rî·ḇūn ‘im·mā·ḏî mō·šeh way·yō·mer lā·hem mah- tə·nas·sūn ’eṯ- Yah·wehWLC · 2

But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled… against Moses…: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt— to make us and our children and livestock {die} of thirst?”

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤑𐤌𐤀

הָעָם֙ וַיִּצְמָ֨א לַמַּ֔יִם שָׁ֤ם וַיָּ֥לֶן הָעָ֖ם עַל־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לָ֤מָּה זֶּה֙ הֶעֱלִיתָ֣נוּ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָמִ֥ית אֹתִ֛י וְאֶת־ בָּנַ֥י וְאֶת־ מִקְנַ֖י בַּצָּמָֽא׃ hā·‘ām way·yiṣ·mā lam·ma·yim šām way·yā·len hā·‘ām ‘al- mō·šeh way·yō·mer lām·māh zeh he·‘ĕ·lî·ṯā·nū mim·miṣ·ra·yim lə·hā·mîṯ ’ō·ṯî wə·’eṯ- bā·nay wə·’eṯ- miq·nay baṣ·ṣā·māWLC · 3

Then Moses cried out to the LORD,… “What should I do with these people? A little more… and they will stone me!”

מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּצְעַ֤ק אֶל־ יְהוָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֔ר מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה הַזֶּ֑ה לָעָ֣ם ע֥וֹד מְעַ֖ט וּסְקָלֻֽנִי׃ mō·šeh way·yiṣ·‘aq ’el- Yah·weh lê·mōr māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh haz·zeh lā·‘ām ‘ō·wḏ mə·‘aṭ ū·sə·qā·lu·nîWLC · 4

And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֗ה עֲבֹר֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם וְקַ֥ח מִזִּקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִתְּךָ֖ קַ֥ח בְּיָדְךָ֖ וּמַטְּךָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכִּ֤יתָ בּוֹ֙ אֶת־ הַיְאֹ֔ר וְהָלָֽכְתָּ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh ‘ă·ḇōr lip̄·nê hā·‘ām wə·qaḥ miz·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’it·tə·ḵā qaḥ bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā ū·maṭ·ṭə·ḵā ’ă·šer hik·kî·ṯā bōw ’eṯ- hay·’ōr wə·hā·lā·ḵə·tāWLC · 5

Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

הִנְנִ֣י עֹמֵד֩ שָּׁ֥ם׀ לְפָנֶ֨יךָ עַֽל־ הַצּוּר֮ בְּחֹרֵב֒ וְהִכִּ֣יתָ בַצּ֗וּר מַ֖יִם וְיָצְא֥וּ מִמֶּ֛נּוּ הָעָ֑ם וְשָׁתָ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיַּ֤עַשׂ כֵּן֙ לְעֵינֵ֖י זִקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ hin·nî ‘ō·mêḏ šām lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā ‘al- haṣ·ṣūr bə·ḥō·rêḇ wə·hik·kî·ṯā ḇaṣ·ṣūr ma·yim wə·yā·ṣə·’ū mim·men·nū hā·‘ām wə·šā·ṯāh mō·šeh way·ya·‘aś kên lə·‘ê·nê ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 6

He named… the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites… quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

וַיִּקְרָא֙ שֵׁ֣ם הַמָּק֔וֹם מַסָּ֖ה וּמְרִיבָ֑ה עַל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל רִ֣יב׀ וְעַ֨ל נַסֹּתָ֤ם אֶת־ יְהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הֲיֵ֧שׁ יְהוָ֛ה בְּקִרְבֵּ֖נוּ אִם־ אָֽיִן׃פ way·yiq·rā šêm ham·mā·qō·wm mas·sāh ū·mə·rî·ḇāh ‘al- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl rîḇ wə·‘al nas·sō·ṯām ’eṯ- Yah·weh lê·mōr hă·yêš Yah·weh bə·qir·bê·nū ’im- ’ā·yinWLC · 7

The Defeat of the Amalekites

After this, the Amalekites came and attacked… the Israelites at Rephidim.

𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤐𐤉𐤃𐤌

עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיָּבֹ֖א וַיִּלָּ֥חֶם עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּרְפִידִֽם׃ ‘ă·mā·lêq way·yā·ḇō way·yil·lā·ḥem ‘im- yiś·rā·’êl bir·p̄î·ḏimWLC · 8

So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose vvv some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop… with the staff of God in my hand.”

מֹשֶׁ֤ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ בְּחַר־ לָ֣נוּ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְצֵ֖א הִלָּחֵ֣ם בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק מָחָ֗ר אָנֹכִ֤י נִצָּב֙ עַל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הַגִּבְעָ֔ה וּמַטֵּ֥ה הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּיָדִֽי׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bə·ḥar- lā·nū ’ă·nā·šîm wə·ṣê hil·lā·ḥêm ba·‘ă·mā·lêq mā·ḥār ’ā·nō·ḵî niṣ·ṣāḇ ‘al- rōš hag·giḇ·‘āh ū·maṭ·ṭêh hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·yā·ḏîWLC · 9

Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤄

יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה אָֽמַר־ לוֹ֙ לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק וּמֹשֶׁה֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן וְח֔וּר עָל֖וּ רֹ֥אשׁ הַגִּבְעָֽה׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·ya·‘aś ka·’ă·šer mō·šeh ’ā·mar- lōw lə·hil·lā·ḥêm ba·‘ă·mā·lêq ū·mō·šeh ’a·hă·rōn wə·ḥūr ‘ā·lū rōš hag·giḇ·‘āhWLC · 10

  • As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered [them], Amalek prevailed.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤓

וְהָיָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֛ה יָרִ֥ים יָד֖וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְגָבַ֣ר וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָנִ֛יחַ יָד֖וֹ עֲמָלֵֽק׃ וְגָבַ֥ר wə·hā·yāh ka·’ă·šer mō·šeh yā·rîm yā·ḏōw yiś·rā·’êl wə·ḡā·ḇar wə·ḵa·’ă·šer yā·nî·aḥ yā·ḏōw ‘ă·mā·lêq wə·ḡā·ḇarWLC · 11

When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each… side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.

מֹשֶׁה֙ וִידֵ֤י כְּבֵדִ֔ים וַיִּקְחוּ־ אֶ֛בֶן וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ תַחְתָּ֖יו וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב עָלֶ֑יהָ וְאַהֲרֹ֨ן וְח֜וּר תָּֽמְכ֣וּ בְיָדָ֗יו מִזֶּ֤ה אֶחָד֙ וּמִזֶּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ד יָדָ֛יו וַיְהִ֥י אֱמוּנָ֖ה עַד־ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ בֹּ֥א mō·šeh wî·ḏê kə·ḇê·ḏîm way·yiq·ḥū- ’e·ḇen way·yā·śî·mū ṯaḥ·tāw way·yê·šeḇ ‘ā·le·hā wə·’a·hă·rōn wə·ḥūr tā·mə·ḵū ḇə·yā·ḏāw miz·zeh ’e·ḥāḏ ū·miz·zeh ’e·ḥāḏ yā·ḏāw way·hî ’ĕ·mū·nāh ‘aḏ- haš·šā·meš bōWLC · 12

So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army… with the sword.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤔 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤐

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶת־ וַיַּחֲלֹ֧שׁ עֲמָלֵ֥ק וְאֶת־ עַמּ֖וֹ לְפִי־ חָֽרֶב׃פ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’eṯ- way·ya·ḥă·lōš ‘ă·mā·lêq wə·’eṯ- ‘am·mōw lə·p̄î- ḥā·reḇWLC · 13

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this… on a scroll as a reminder and recite… it to Joshua, because I will utterly blot out… the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֗ה כְּתֹ֨ב זֹ֤את בַּסֵּ֔פֶר זִכָּרוֹן֙ וְשִׂ֖ים בְּאָזְנֵ֣י יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ כִּֽי־ מָחֹ֤ה אֶמְחֶה֙ אֶת־ זֵ֣כֶר עֲמָלֵ֔ק מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh kə·ṯōḇ zōṯ bas·sê·p̄er zik·kā·rō·wn wə·śîm bə·’ā·zə·nê yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ kî- mā·ḥōh ’em·ḥeh ’eṯ- zê·ḵer ‘ă·mā·lêq mit·ta·ḥaṯ haš·šā·mā·yimWLC · 14

And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤎𐤉

מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיִּ֥בֶן מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יְהוָ֥ה׀ נִסִּֽי׃ mō·šeh way·yi·ḇen miz·bê·aḥ way·yiq·rā šə·mōw Yah·weh nis·sîWLC · 15

“Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
