Chapter 2

The Birth and Adoption of Moses

  • Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,

𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤁𐤕

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אִ֖ישׁ מִבֵּ֣ית לֵוִ֑י וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־ לֵוִֽי׃ בַּת־ way·yê·leḵ ’îš mib·bêṯ lê·wî way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- lê·wî baṯ-WLC · 1

and she conceived and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he [was a] beautiful [child], she hid him for three months.

הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתַּ֥הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתֵּ֤רֶא אֹתוֹ֙ כִּי־ ה֔וּא ט֣וֹב וַֽתִּצְפְּנֵ֖הוּ שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יְרָחִֽים׃ hā·’iš·šāh wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ bên wat·tê·re ’ō·ṯōw kî- hū ṭō·wḇ wat·tiṣ·pə·nê·hū šə·lō·šāh yə·rā·ḥîmWLC · 2

But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in [the basket] and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.

יָכְלָ֣ה וְלֹא־ עוֹד֮ הַצְּפִינוֹ֒ וַתִּֽקַּֽח־ לוֹ֙ גֹּ֔מֶא תֵּ֣בַת וַתַּחְמְרָ֥ה בַחֵמָ֖ר וּבַזָּ֑פֶת וַתָּ֤שֶׂם הַיֶּ֔לֶד בָּהּ֙ אֶת־ וַתָּ֥שֶׂם בַּסּ֖וּף עַל־ שְׂפַ֥ת הַיְאֹֽר׃ yā·ḵə·lāh wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ haṣ·ṣə·p̄î·nōw wat·tiq·qaḥ- lōw gō·me tê·ḇaṯ wat·taḥ·mə·rāh ḇa·ḥê·mār ū·ḇaz·zā·p̄eṯ wat·tā·śem hay·ye·leḏ bāh ’eṯ- wat·tā·śem bas·sūp̄ ‘al- śə·p̄aṯ hay·’ōrWLC · 3

And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

אֲחֹת֖וֹ וַתֵּתַצַּ֥ב מֵרָחֹ֑ק לְדֵעָ֕ה מַה־ יֵּעָשֶׂ֖ה לֽוֹ׃ ’ă·ḥō·ṯōw wat·tê·ṯaṣ·ṣaḇ mê·rā·ḥōq lə·ḏê·‘āh mah- yê·‘ā·śeh lōwWLC · 4

Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank… And when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maidservant to retrieve it.

בַּת־ פַּרְעֹה֙ וַתֵּ֤רֶד לִרְחֹ֣ץ עַל־ הַיְאֹ֔ר וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֥יהָ הֹלְכֹ֖ת עַל־ יַ֣ד הַיְאֹ֑ר וַתֵּ֤רֶא אֶת־ הַתֵּבָה֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַסּ֔וּף וַתִּשְׁלַ֥ח אֶת־ אֲמָתָ֖הּ וַתִּקָּחֶֽהָ baṯ- par·‘ōh wat·tê·reḏ lir·ḥōṣ ‘al- hay·’ōr wə·na·‘ă·rō·ṯe·hā hō·lə·ḵōṯ ‘al- yaḏ hay·’ōr wat·tê·re ’eṯ- hat·tê·ḇāh bə·ṯō·wḵ has·sūp̄ wat·tiš·laḥ ’eṯ- ’ă·mā·ṯāh wat·tiq·qå̄·ḥɛ·hå̄WLC · 5

When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the little boy was crying. So she had compassion on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew children.”

וַתִּפְתַּח֙ וַתִּרְאֵ֣הוּ אֶת־ הַיֶּ֔לֶד וְהִנֵּה־ נַ֖עַר בֹּכֶ֑ה וַתַּחְמֹ֣ל עָלָ֔יו וַתֹּ֕אמֶר זֶֽה׃ הָֽעִבְרִ֖ים מִיַּלְדֵ֥י wat·tip̄·taḥ wat·tir·’ê·hū ’eṯ- hay·ye·leḏ wə·hin·nêh- na·‘ar bō·ḵeh wat·taḥ·mōl ‘ā·lāw wat·tō·mer zeh hā·‘iḇ·rîm mî·yal·ḏêWLC · 6

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” -

𐤀𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤒 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕

אֲחֹתוֹ֮ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ פַּרְעֹה֒ בַּת־ הַאֵלֵ֗ךְ וְקָרָ֤אתִי לָךְ֙ מִ֖ן הָעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת אִשָּׁ֣ה מֵינֶ֔קֶת וְתֵינִ֥ק הַיָּֽלֶד׃ לָ֖ךְ אֶת־ ’ă·ḥō·ṯōw wat·tō·mer ’el- par·‘ōh baṯ- ha·’ê·lêḵ wə·qā·rā·ṯî lāḵ min hā·‘iḇ·rî·yōṯ ’iš·šāh mê·ne·qeṯ wə·ṯê·niq hay·yā·leḏ lāḵ ’eṯ-WLC · 7

“Go ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. And the girl went and called the boy’s mother.

לֵ֑כִי פַּרְעֹ֖ה בַּת־ וַתֹּֽאמֶר־ לָ֥הּ הָֽעַלְמָ֔ה וַתֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַתִּקְרָ֖א אֶת־ הַיָּֽלֶד׃ אֵ֥ם lê·ḵî par·‘ōh baṯ- wat·tō·mer- lāh hā·‘al·māh wat·tê·leḵ wat·tiq·rā ’eṯ- hay·yā·leḏ ’êmWLC · 8

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the boy and nursed him.

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤒𐤄𐤅

פַּרְעֹ֗ה בַּת־ וַתֹּ֧אמֶר לָ֣הּ הֵילִ֜יכִי אֶת־ הַזֶּה֙ הַיֶּ֤לֶד וְהֵינִקִ֣הוּ לִ֔י וַאֲנִ֖י אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶת־ שְׂכָרֵ֑ךְ הָאִשָּׁ֛ה וַתִּקַּ֧ח הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַתְּנִיקֵֽהוּ׃ par·‘ōh baṯ- wat·tō·mer lāh hê·lî·ḵî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hay·ye·leḏ wə·hê·ni·qi·hū lî wa·’ă·nî ’et·tên ’eṯ- śə·ḵā·rêḵ hā·’iš·šāh wat·tiq·qaḥ hay·ye·leḏ wat·tə·nî·qê·hūWLC · 9

When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him… Moses and explained…, “I drew him out of the water.”

הַיֶּ֗לֶד וַיִגְדַּ֣ל וַתְּבִאֵ֙הוּ֙ פַּרְעֹ֔ה לְבַת־ וַֽיְהִי־ לָ֖הּ לְבֵ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמוֹ֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַתֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֥י מְשִׁיתִֽהוּ׃ מִן־ הַמַּ֖יִם hay·ye·leḏ wa·yiḡ·dal wat·tə·ḇi·’ê·hū par·‘ōh lə·ḇaṯ- way·hî- lāh lə·ḇên wat·tiq·rā šə·mōw mō·šeh wat·tō·mer kî mə·šî·ṯi·hū min- ham·ma·yimWLC · 10

The Rejection and Flight of Moses

  • One day…, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their hard labor. He saw… an Egyptian beating… a Hebrew, one of his own people.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤎𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅

וַיְהִ֣י׀ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֗ם מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּגְדַּ֤ל וַיֵּצֵ֣א אֶל־ אֶחָ֔יו וַיַּ֖רְא בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם וַיַּרְא֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִצְרִ֔י מַכֶּ֥ה אִישׁ־ עִבְרִ֖י מֵאֶחָֽיו׃ way·hî bay·yā·mîm hā·hêm mō·šeh way·yiḡ·dal way·yê·ṣê ’el- ’e·ḥāw way·yar bə·siḇ·lō·ṯām way·yar ’îš miṣ·rî mak·keh ’îš- ‘iḇ·rî mê·’e·ḥāwWLC · 11

After looking this way [and] that and seeing… no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.

𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤈𐤌𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤋

וַיִּ֤פֶן כֹּה֙ וָכֹ֔ה וַיַּ֖רְא כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־ הַמִּצְרִ֔י וַֽיִּטְמְנֵ֖הוּ בַּחֽוֹל׃ way·yi·p̄en kōh wā·ḵōh way·yar kî ’ên ’îš way·yaḵ ’eṯ- ham·miṣ·rî way·yiṭ·mə·nê·hū ba·ḥō·wlWLC · 12

The next day [Moses] went out and saw two… Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your companion?”

𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤊𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤊

הַשֵּׁנִ֔י בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיֵּצֵא֙ וְהִנֵּ֛ה שְׁנֵֽי־ אֲנָשִׁ֥ים עִבְרִ֖ים נִצִּ֑ים וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לָֽרָשָׁ֔ע לָ֥מָּה תַכֶּ֖ה רֵעֶֽךָ׃ haš·šê·nî bay·yō·wm way·yê·ṣê wə·hin·nêh šə·nê- ’ă·nā·šîm ‘iḇ·rîm niṣ·ṣîm way·yō·mer lā·rā·šā‘ lām·māh ṯak·keh rê·‘e·ḵāWLC · 13

But the man replied, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? Then Moses was afraid and thought, “This thing I have done has surely become known.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤊𐤍 𐤍𐤅𐤃𐤏

וַ֠יֹּאמֶר מִ֣י שָֽׂמְךָ֞ לְאִ֨ישׁ שַׂ֤ר וְשֹׁפֵט֙ עָלֵ֔ינוּ אַתָּ֣ה אֹמֵ֔ר הַלְהָרְגֵ֙נִי֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הָרַ֖גְתָּ אֶת־ הַמִּצְרִ֑י מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּירָ֤א וַיֹּאמַ֔ר הַדָּבָֽר׃ אָכֵ֖ן נוֹדַ֥ע way·yō·mer mî śā·mə·ḵā lə·’îš śar wə·šō·p̄êṭ ‘ā·lê·nū ’at·tāh ’ō·mêr hal·hā·rə·ḡê·nî ka·’ă·šer hā·raḡ·tā ’eṯ- ham·miṣ·rî mō·šeh way·yî·rā way·yō·mar had·dā·ḇār ’ā·ḵên nō·w·ḏa‘WLC · 14

When Pharaoh - heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down beside a well.

פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֣ר וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע הַזֶּ֔ה וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ לַהֲרֹ֣ג אֶת־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּבְרַ֤ח מִפְּנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ מִדְיָ֖ן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב עַֽל־ הַבְּאֵֽר׃ par·‘ōh ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār way·yiš·ma‘ haz·zeh way·ḇaq·qêš la·hă·rōḡ ’eṯ- mō·šeh mō·šeh way·yiḇ·raḥ mip·pə·nê p̄ar·‘ōh way·yê·šeḇ bə·’e·reṣ- miḏ·yān way·yê·šeḇ ‘al- hab·bə·’êrWLC · 15

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock.

𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤄𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤑𐤀𐤍

וּלְכֹהֵ֥ן מִדְיָ֖ן שֶׁ֣בַע בָּנ֑וֹת וַתָּבֹ֣אנָה וַתִּדְלֶ֗נָה וַתְּמַלֶּ֙אנָה֙ אֶת־ הָ֣רְהָטִ֔ים לְהַשְׁק֖וֹת אֲבִיהֶֽן׃ צֹ֥אן ū·lə·ḵō·hên miḏ·yān še·ḇa‘ bā·nō·wṯ wat·tā·ḇō·nāh wat·tiḏ·le·nāh wat·tə·mal·le·nāh ’eṯ- hā·rə·hā·ṭîm lə·haš·qō·wṯ ’ă·ḇî·hen ṣōnWLC · 16

And when some shepherds came along and drove them away, Moses rose up to help them and watered their flock.

הָרֹעִ֖ים וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ וַיְגָרְשׁ֑וּם מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיָּ֤קָם וַיּ֣וֹשִׁעָ֔ן וַיַּ֖שְׁקְ אֶת־ צֹאנָֽם׃ hā·rō·‘îm way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·ḡā·rə·šūm mō·šeh way·yā·qām way·yō·wō·ši·‘ān way·yašq ’eṯ- ṣō·nāmWLC · 17

When [the daughters] returned to their father Reuel, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”

“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they replied. “… He even drew water… for us and watered the flock.”

“So where is he?” [their father] asked… “Why… did you leave the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat…”

Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.

And she gave birth to a son, and [Moses] named him… Gershom, saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”

God Hears the Cry of the Israelites

  • After a long… time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites… groaned and cried out under their burden of slavery, and their cry for deliverance from bondage ascended to God.

וַיְהִי֩ הָֽרַבִּ֜ים הָהֵ֗ם בַיָּמִ֨ים מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיָּ֙מָת֙ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיֵּאָנְח֧וּ וַיִּזְעָ֑קוּ מִן־ הָעֲבֹדָ֖ה שַׁוְעָתָ֛ם מִן־ הָעֲבֹדָֽה׃ וַתַּ֧עַל אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים way·hî hā·rab·bîm hā·hêm ḇay·yā·mîm me·leḵ miṣ·ra·yim way·yā·māṯ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·’ā·nə·ḥū way·yiz·‘ā·qū min- hā·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh šaw·‘ā·ṯām min- hā·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh wat·ta·‘al ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 23

So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham,… Isaac,… and Jacob.
