Chapter 33
The Command to Leave Sinai

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of the land of Egypt, [and go] to the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’

יְהוָ֤ה וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁה֙ לֵ֣ךְ עֲלֵ֣ה מִזֶּ֔ה אַתָּ֣ה וְהָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶֽעֱלִ֖יתָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֶל־ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִ֠שְׁבַּעְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֨ם לְיִצְחָ֤ק וּֽלְיַעֲקֹב֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶתְּנֶֽנָּה׃ לְזַרְעֲךָ֖ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lêḵ ‘ă·lêh miz·zeh ’at·tāh wə·hā·‘ām ’ă·šer he·‘ĕ·lî·ṯā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer niš·ba‘·tî lə·’aḇ·rā·hām lə·yiṣ·ḥāq ū·lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ lê·mōr ’et·tə·nen·nāh lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā — WLC · 1

And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֥י מַלְאָ֑ךְ לְפָנֶ֖יךָ וְגֵֽרַשְׁתִּ֗י אֶת־ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י וְהַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ wə·šā·laḥ·tî mal·’āḵ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·ḡê·raš·tî ’eṯ- hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·ha·ḥit·tî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî — WLC · 2

Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked… people; otherwise, I might destroy you on the way.”

אֶל־ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א אֶֽעֱלֶ֜ה בְּקִרְבְּךָ֗ כִּ֤י אַ֔תָּה קְשֵׁה־ עֹ֙רֶף֙ עַם־ פֶּן־ אֲכֶלְךָ֖ בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃ ’el- ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇāš kî lō ’e·‘ĕ·leh bə·qir·bə·ḵā kî ’at·tāh qə·šêh- ‘ō·rep̄ ‘am- pen- ’ă·ḵel·ḵā bad·dā·reḵ — WLC · 3

When the people heard this bad news, they went into mourning, and no one put on any of his jewelry…

הָעָ֗ם אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע הַזֶּ֖ה הָרָ֛ע הַדָּבָ֥ר וַיִּתְאַבָּ֑לוּ וְלֹא־ אִ֥ישׁ שָׁ֛תוּ עֶדְי֖וֹ עָלָֽיו׃ hā·‘ām ’eṯ- way·yiš·ma‘ haz·zeh hā·rā‘ had·dā·ḇār way·yiṯ·’ab·bā·lū wə·lō- ’îš šā·ṯū ‘eḏ·yōw ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 4

For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell… the Israelites…, ‘You are a stiff-necked… people. If I should go with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewelry,… and I will decide what to do with you.’”

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־ בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אַתֶּ֣ם קְשֵׁה־ עֹ֔רֶף עַם־ אֶֽעֱלֶ֥ה בְקִרְבְּךָ֖ אֶחָ֛ד רֶ֧גַע וְכִלִּיתִ֑יךָ וְעַתָּ֗ה הוֹרֵ֤ד עֶדְיְךָ֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ וְאֵדְעָ֖ה מָ֥ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ לָּֽךְ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh ’ĕ·mōr ’el- bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’at·tem qə·šêh- ‘ō·rep̄ ‘am- ’e·‘ĕ·leh ḇə·qir·bə·ḵā ’e·ḥāḏ re·ḡa‘ wə·ḵil·lî·ṯî·ḵā wə·‘at·tāh hō·w·rêḏ ‘eḏ·yə·ḵā mê·‘ā·le·ḵā wə·’ê·ḏə·‘āh māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lāḵ — WLC · 5

So the Israelites… stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb [onward].

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־ וַיִּֽתְנַצְּל֧וּ עֶדְיָ֖ם מֵהַ֥ר חוֹרֵֽב׃ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·yiṯ·naṣ·ṣə·lū ‘eḏ·yām mê·har ḥō·w·rêḇ — WLC · 6
The Tent of Meeting

Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it… at a distance outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting, and anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄
וּמֹשֶׁה֩ יִקַּ֨ח אֶת־ הָאֹ֜הֶל וְנָֽטָה־ ל֣וֹ׀ מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה הַרְחֵק֙ מִן־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְקָ֥רָא ל֖וֹ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְהָיָה֙ כָּל־ מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ יְהוָ֔ה יֵצֵא֙ אֶל־ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ ū·mō·šeh yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- hā·’ō·hel wə·nā·ṭāh- lōw mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh har·ḥêq min- ham·ma·ḥă·neh wə·qā·rā lōw ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·hā·yāh kāl- mə·ḇaq·qêš Yah·weh yê·ṣê ’el- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ ’ă·šer mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh — WLC · 7

Then, whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people… would stand at the entrances to their [own] tents and watch… Moses until he entered the tent.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤑𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤈𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤄
וְהָיָ֗ה מֹשֶׁה֙ כְּצֵ֤את אֶל־ הָאֹ֔הֶל כָּל־ הָעָ֔ם וְנִ֨צְּב֔וּ יָק֙וּמוּ֙ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֣תַח אָהֳל֑וֹ וְהִבִּ֙יטוּ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַד־ בֹּא֖וֹ הָאֹֽהֱלָה׃ wə·hā·yāh mō·šeh kə·ṣêṯ ’el- hā·’ō·hel kāl- hā·‘ām wə·niṣ·ṣə·ḇū yā·qū·mū ’îš pe·ṯaḥ ’ā·ho·lōw wə·hib·bî·ṭū ’a·ḥă·rê mō·šeh ‘aḏ- bō·’ōw hā·’ō·hĕ·lāh — WLC · 8

As Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and remain at the entrance -, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤄
וְהָיָ֗ה מֹשֶׁה֙ כְּבֹ֤א הָאֹ֔הֱלָה עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן יֵרֵד֙ וְעָמַ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וְדִבֶּ֖ר עִם־ מֹשֶֽׁה׃ wə·hā·yāh mō·šeh kə·ḇō hā·’ō·hĕ·lāh ‘am·mūḏ he·‘ā·nān yê·rêḏ wə·‘ā·maḏ pe·ṯaḥ hā·’ō·hel wə·ḏib·ber ‘im- mō·šeh — WLC · 9

When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they… would stand up and worship, each one at the entrance to his [own] tent.
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅
כָל־ הָעָם֙ אֶת־ וְרָאָ֤ה עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן עֹמֵ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל כָּל־ הָעָם֙ וְקָ֤ם וְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֥תַח אָהֳלֽוֹ׃ ḵāl hā·‘ām ’eṯ- wə·rā·’āh ‘am·mūḏ he·‘ā·nān ‘ō·mêḏ pe·ṯaḥ hā·’ō·hel kāl- hā·‘ām wə·qām wə·hiš·ta·ḥăw·wū ’îš pe·ṯaḥ ’ā·ho·lōw — WLC · 10

Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave vvv the tent.

יְהוָ֤ה וְדִבֶּ֨ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁה֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־ פָּנִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר אִ֖ישׁ יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְשָׁב֙ אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה נַ֔עַר וּמְשָׁ֨רְת֜וֹ יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ בִּן־ נוּן֙ לֹ֥א יָמִ֖ישׁ מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֹֽהֶל׃ס Yah·weh wə·ḏib·ber ’el- mō·šeh pā·nîm ’el- pā·nîm ka·’ă·šer ’îš yə·ḏab·bêr ’el- rê·‘ê·hū wə·šāḇ ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh na·‘ar ū·mə·šā·rə·ṯōw yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūn lō yā·mîš mit·tō·wḵ hā·’ō·hel — WLC · 11
The Promise of God’s Presence

Then Moses said to the LORD, “Look, You have been telling me,… ‘Lead this people up,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have found favor in My sight.’
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉
מֹשֶׁ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוָ֗ה רְ֠אֵה אַתָּ֞ה אֹמֵ֤ר אֵלַי֙ הַ֚עַל הַזֶּ֔ה הָעָ֣ם אֶת־ וְאַתָּה֙ לֹ֣א הֽוֹדַעְתַּ֔נִי אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ תִּשְׁלַ֖ח עִמִּ֑י וְאַתָּ֤ה אָמַ֙רְתָּ֙ יְדַעְתִּ֣יךָֽ בְשֵׁ֔ם וְגַם־ מָצָ֥אתָ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינָֽי׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- Yah·weh rə·’êh ’at·tāh ’ō·mêr ’ê·lay ha·‘al haz·zeh hā·‘ām ’eṯ- wə·’at·tāh lō hō·w·ḏa‘·ta·nî ’êṯ ’ă·šer- tiš·laḥ ‘im·mî wə·’at·tāh ’ā·mar·tā yə·ḏa‘·tî·ḵā ḇə·šêm wə·ḡam- mā·ṣā·ṯā ḥên bə·‘ê·nāy — WLC · 12

Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight, please let me know Your ways, that I may know You… and find favor in Your sight. Remember that this nation is Your people.”

וְעַתָּ֡ה אִם־ נָא֩ מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֜ן בְּעֵינֶ֗יךָ נָא֙ הוֹדִעֵ֤נִי אֶת־ דְּרָכֶ֔ךָ וְאֵדָ֣עֲךָ֔ לְמַ֥עַן אֶמְצָא־ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וּרְאֵ֕ה כִּ֥י הַזֶּֽה׃ הַגּ֥וֹי עַמְּךָ֖ wə·‘at·tāh ’im- nā mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā nā hō·w·ḏi·‘ê·nî ’eṯ- də·rā·ḵe·ḵā wə·’ê·ḏā·‘ă·ḵā lə·ma·‘an ’em·ṣā- ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā ū·rə·’êh kî haz·zeh hag·gō·w ‘am·mə·ḵā — WLC · 13

And [the LORD] answered, “My Presence will go [with you], and I will give you rest
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊
וַיֹּאמַ֑ר פָּנַ֥י יֵלֵ֖כוּ וַהֲנִחֹ֥תִי לָֽךְ׃ way·yō·mar pā·nay yê·lê·ḵū wa·hă·ni·ḥō·ṯî lāḵ — WLC · 14

“If Your Presence does not go [with us],” Moses replied “do not lead us up from here.
𐤀𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤆𐤄
אִם־ פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ אֵ֤ין הֹלְכִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו אַֽל־ תַּעֲלֵ֖נוּ מִזֶּֽה׃ ’im- pā·ne·ḵā ’ên hō·lə·ḵîm way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ’al- ta·‘ă·lê·nū miz·zeh — WLC · 15

For how then can it be known… that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight, unless You go with us? [How else will] we… be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”

Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”

וַיֹּאמַ֑ר נָ֖א אֶת־ הַרְאֵ֥נִי כְּבֹדֶֽךָ׃ way·yō·mar nā ’eṯ- har·’ê·nî kə·ḇō·ḏe·ḵā — WLC · 18

“I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” [the LORD] replied, “and I will proclaim [My] name— the LORD— in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

אֲנִ֨י כָּל־ טוּבִי֙ אַעֲבִ֤יר עַל־ פָּנֶ֔יךָ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וְקָרָ֧אתִֽי בְשֵׁ֛ם יְהוָ֖ה לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וְחַנֹּתִי֙ אֶת־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָחֹ֔ן וְרִחַמְתִּ֖י אֶת־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲרַחֵֽם׃ ’ă·nî kāl- ṭū·ḇî ’a·‘ă·ḇîr ‘al- pā·ne·ḵā way·yō·mer wə·qā·rā·ṯî ḇə·šêm Yah·weh lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·ḥan·nō·ṯî ’eṯ- ’ă·šer ’ā·ḥōn wə·ri·ḥam·tî ’eṯ- ’ă·šer ’ă·ra·ḥêm — WLC · 19

But He added, “You cannot… see My face, for no one can see [Me] and live.”

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א תוּכַ֖ל לִרְאֹ֣ת אֶת־ פָּנָ֑י כִּ֛י לֹֽא־ הָאָדָ֖ם יִרְאַ֥נִי וָחָֽי׃ way·yō·mer lō ṯū·ḵal lir·’ōṯ ’eṯ- pā·nāy kî lō- hā·’ā·ḏām yir·’a·nî wā·ḥāy — WLC · 20

The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤑𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤅𐤓
יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הִנֵּ֥ה מָק֖וֹם אִתִּ֑י וְנִצַּבְתָּ֖ עַל־ הַצּֽוּר׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer hin·nêh mā·qō·wm ’it·tî wə·niṣ·ṣaḇ·tā ‘al- haṣ·ṣūr — WLC · 21

and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand… until I have passed by.

וְהָיָה֙ כְּבֹדִ֔י בַּעֲבֹ֣ר וְשַׂמְתִּ֖יךָ בְּנִקְרַ֣ת הַצּ֑וּר וְשַׂכֹּתִ֥י כַפִּ֛י עָלֶ֖יךָ עַד־ עָבְרִֽי׃ wə·hā·yāh kə·ḇō·ḏî ba·‘ă·ḇōr wə·śam·tî·ḵā bə·niq·raṯ haṣ·ṣūr wə·śak·kō·ṯî ḵap·pî ‘ā·le·ḵā ‘aḏ- ‘ā·ḇə·rî — WLC · 22

Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”
