Chapter 7

God Commands Moses and Aaron

1

The LORD… answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤊

יְהוָה֙ אֶל־ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה רְאֵ֛ה נְתַתִּ֥יךָ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לְפַרְעֹ֑ה אָחִ֖יךָ וְאַהֲרֹ֥ן יִהְיֶ֥ה נְבִיאֶֽךָ׃ Yah·weh ’el- way·yō·mer mō·šeh rə·’êh nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā ’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·p̄ar·‘ōh ’ā·ḥî·ḵā wə·’a·hă·rōn yih·yeh nə·ḇî·’e·ḵāWLC · 1

You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites… go out of his land.

אַתָּ֣ה תְדַבֵּ֔ר אֵ֖ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲצַוֶּ֑ךָּ אָחִ֙יךָ֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֤ן יְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְשִׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ מֵאַרְצֽוֹ׃ ’at·tāh ṯə·ḏab·bêr ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer ’ă·ṣaw·we·kā ’ā·ḥî·ḵā wə·’a·hă·rōn yə·ḏab·bêr ’el- par·‘ōh bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·šil·laḥ ’eṯ- mê·’ar·ṣōwWLC · 2

But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I will multiply My signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

וַאֲנִ֥י אַקְשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־ פַּרְעֹ֑ה לֵ֣ב וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֧י אֶת־ אֹתֹתַ֛י וְאֶת־ מוֹפְתַ֖י בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ wa·’ă·nî ’aq·šeh ’eṯ- par·‘ōh lêḇ wə·hir·bê·ṯî ’eṯ- ’ō·ṯō·ṯay wə·’eṯ- mō·wp̄·ṯay bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 3

Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay My hand on Egypt, and by mighty acts of judgment I will bring the divisions of My people the Israelites… out of the land of Egypt.

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹֽא־ יִשְׁמַ֤ע אֲלֵכֶם֙ וְנָתַתִּ֥י אֶת־ יָדִ֖י בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם גְּדֹלִֽים׃ בִּשְׁפָטִ֖ים וְהוֹצֵאתִ֨י אֶת־ צִבְאֹתַ֜י אֶת־ עַמִּ֤י בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם par·‘ōh wə·lō- yiš·ma‘ ’ă·lê·ḵem wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî bə·miṣ·rā·yim gə·ḏō·lîm biš·p̄ā·ṭîm wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ- ṣiḇ·’ō·ṯay ’eṯ- ‘am·mî ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yimWLC · 4

And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites… out from among them.”

מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְיָדְע֤וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה בִּנְטֹתִ֥י אֶת־ יָדִ֖י עַל־ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהוֹצֵאתִ֥י אֶת־ בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִתּוֹכָֽם׃ miṣ·ra·yim wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh bin·ṭō·ṯî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî ‘al- miṣ·rā·yim wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ- bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl mit·tō·w·ḵāmWLC · 5

So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them.

מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיַּ֥עַשׂ כֵּ֥ן עָשֽׂוּ׃ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֛ה אֹתָ֖ם צִוָּ֧ה mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn way·ya·‘aś kên ‘ā·śū ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ō·ṯām ṣiw·wāhWLC · 6

Moses was eighty years old… and Aaron… was eighty-three… when they spoke to Pharaoh.

וּמֹשֶׁה֙ שְׁמֹנִ֣ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַֽהֲרֹ֔ן בֶּן־ שָׁלֹ֥שׁ וּשְׁמֹנִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה בְּדַבְּרָ֖ם אֶל־ פַּרְעֹֽה׃פ ū·mō·šeh šə·mō·nîm ben- šā·nāh wə·’a·hă·rōn ben- šā·lōš ū·šə·mō·nîm šā·nāh bə·ḏab·bə·rām ’el- par·‘ōhWLC · 7

Aaron’s Staff

The LORD said to Moses… and Aaron,…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn lê·mōrWLC · 8

“When Pharaoh tells you,… ‘Perform a miracle,’ you are to say… to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ [and] it {will} become a serpent.

כִּי֩ פַּרְעֹה֙ יְדַבֵּ֨ר אֲלֵכֶ֤ם לֵאמֹ֔ר תְּנ֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם מוֹפֵ֑ת וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֗ן קַ֧ח אֶֽת־ מַטְּךָ֛ וְהַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ לִפְנֵֽי־ פַרְעֹ֖ה יְהִ֥י לְתַנִּֽין׃ kî par·‘ōh yə·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·ḵem lê·mōr tə·nū lā·ḵem mō·w·p̄êṯ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- ’a·hă·rōn qaḥ ’eṯ- maṭ·ṭə·ḵā wə·haš·lêḵ lip̄·nê- p̄ar·‘ōh yə·hî lə·ṯan·nînWLC · 9

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did… just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff {down} before Pharaoh… and his officials, and it became a serpent.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤈𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤍

מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאַהֲרֹן֙ וַיָּבֹ֨א אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיַּ֣עַשׂוּ כֵ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יְהוָ֑ה צִוָּ֣ה אַהֲרֹ֜ן אֶת־ וַיַּשְׁלֵ֨ךְ מַטֵּ֗הוּ לִפְנֵ֥י פַרְעֹ֛ה וְלִפְנֵ֥י עֲבָדָ֖יו וַיְהִ֥י לְתַנִּֽין׃ mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn way·yā·ḇō ’el- par·‘ōh way·ya·ʿa·śū ḵên ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ṣiw·wāh ’a·hă·rōn ’eṯ- way·yaš·lêḵ maṭ·ṭê·hū lip̄·nê p̄ar·‘ōh wə·lip̄·nê ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·hî lə·ṯan·nînWLC · 10

But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same things by their magic arts.

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤈𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤋𐤄𐤈𐤉𐤄𐤌

פַּרְעֹ֔ה גַּם־ וַיִּקְרָא֙ לַֽחֲכָמִ֖ים וְלַֽמְכַשְּׁפִ֑ים חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י מִצְרַ֛יִם הֵ֜ם גַם־ וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֨וּ כֵּֽן׃ בְּלַהֲטֵיהֶ֖ם par·‘ōh gam- way·yiq·rā la·ḥă·ḵā·mîm wə·lam·ḵaš·šə·p̄îm ḥar·ṭum·mê miṣ·ra·yim hêm ḡam- way·ya·‘ă·śū kên bə·la·hă·ṭê·hemWLC · 11

Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up [the other] staffs.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤈𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤌𐤈𐤕𐤌

אִ֣ישׁ וַיַּשְׁלִ֙יכוּ֙ מַטֵּ֔הוּ וַיִּהְי֖וּ לְתַנִּינִ֑ם אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֶת־ מַטֵּֽה־ וַיִּבְלַ֥ע מַטֹּתָֽם׃ ’îš way·yaš·lî·ḵū maṭ·ṭê·hū way·yih·yū lə·ṯan·nî·nim ’a·hă·rōn ’eṯ- maṭ·ṭêh- way·yiḇ·la‘ maṭ·ṭō·ṯāmWLC · 12

Still, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

The First Plague: Blood

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart [is] unyielding; he refuses to let the people go.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤁 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה פַּרְעֹ֑ה לֵ֣ב כָּבֵ֖ד מֵאֵ֖ן הָעָֽם׃ לְשַׁלַּ֥ח Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh par·‘ōh lêḇ kā·ḇêḏ mê·’ên hā·‘ām lə·šal·laḥWLC · 14

Go to Pharaoh in the morning as you see him walking out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake.

לֵ֣ךְ אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֞ה בַּבֹּ֗קֶר הִנֵּה֙ יֹצֵ֣א הַמַּ֔יְמָה וְנִצַּבְתָּ֥ עַל־ שְׂפַ֣ת הַיְאֹ֑ר לִקְרָאת֖וֹ תִּקַּ֥ח בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ וְהַמַּטֶּ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־ נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ לְנָחָ֖שׁ lêḵ ’el- par·‘ōh bab·bō·qer hin·nêh yō·ṣê ham·may·māh wə·niṣ·ṣaḇ·tā ‘al- śə·p̄aṯ hay·’ōr liq·rā·ṯōw tiq·qaḥ bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā wə·ham·maṭ·ṭeh ’ă·šer- neh·paḵ lə·nā·ḥāšWLC · 15

Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me… to tell you: Let My people go, so that they may worship Me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָעִבְרִים֙ שְׁלָחַ֤נִי אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר עַמִּ֔י שַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־ וְיַֽעַבְדֻ֖נִי בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְהִנֵּ֥ה עַד־ כֹּֽה׃ לֹא־ שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê hā·‘iḇ·rîm šə·lā·ḥa·nî ’ê·le·ḵā lê·mōr ‘am·mî šal·laḥ ’eṯ- wə·ya·‘aḇ·ḏu·nî bam·miḏ·bār wə·hin·nêh ‘aḏ- kōh lō- šā·ma‘·tāWLC · 16

This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD. Behold, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile,… and it will turn to blood.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤌

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר בְּזֹ֣את תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֖י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֨ה בַּמַּטֶּ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־ בְּיָדִ֗י אָנֹכִ֜י מַכֶּ֣ה׀ הַמַּ֛יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּיְאֹ֖ר עַל־ וְנֶהֶפְכ֥וּ לְדָֽם׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar bə·zōṯ tê·ḏa‘ kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh hin·nêh bam·maṭ·ṭeh ’ă·šer- bə·yā·ḏî ’ā·nō·ḵî mak·keh ham·ma·yim ’ă·šer bay·’ōr ‘al- wə·ne·hep̄·ḵū lə·ḏāmWLC · 17

The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink vvv its water.’”

וְהַדָּגָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־ בַּיְאֹ֛ר תָּמ֖וּת הַיְאֹ֑ר וּבָאַ֣שׁ מִצְרַ֔יִם וְנִלְא֣וּ לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מִן־ הַיְאֹֽר׃ס מַ֖יִם wə·had·dā·ḡāh ’ă·šer- bay·’ōr tā·mūṯ hay·’ōr ū·ḇā·’aš miṣ·ra·yim wə·nil·’ū liš·tō·wṯ min- hay·’ōr ma·yimWLC · 18

And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell… Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt— over their rivers… [and] canals… and ponds and all vvv the reservoirs— that they may become blood.’ There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.”

Moses and Aaron did… just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh… and his officials, [Aaron] raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water - was turned to blood.

The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink vvv its water. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.

וְהַדָּגָ֨ה אֲשֶׁר־ בַּיְאֹ֥ר מֵ֙תָה֙ הַיְאֹ֔ר וַיִּבְאַ֣שׁ מִצְרַ֔יִם יָכְל֣וּ וְלֹא־ לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מִן־ הַיְאֹ֑ר מַ֖יִם וַיְהִ֥י הַדָּ֖ם בְּכָל־ אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ wə·had·dā·ḡāh ’ă·šer- bay·’ōr mê·ṯāh hay·’ōr way·yiḇ·’aš miṣ·ra·yim yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō- liš·tō·wṯ min- hay·’ōr ma·yim way·hî had·dām bə·ḵāl ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 21

But the magicians of Egypt did the same things by their magic arts. So Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to [Moses and Aaron], just as the LORD had said.

חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ כֵ֛ן בְּלָטֵיהֶ֑ם פַּרְעֹה֙ לֵב־ וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק וְלֹא־ שָׁמַ֣ע אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יְהוָֽה׃ דִּבֶּ֥ר ḥar·ṭum·mê miṣ·ra·yim way·ya·‘ă·śū- ḵên bə·lā·ṭê·hem par·‘ōh lêḇ- way·ye·ḥĕ·zaq wə·lō- šā·ma‘ ’ă·lê·hem ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·berWLC · 22

Instead, Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and did not take any of this to heart.

פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיִּ֣פֶן וַיָּבֹ֖א אֶל־ בֵּית֑וֹ וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥ת גַּם־ לָזֹֽאת׃ לִבּ֖וֹ par·‘ōh way·yi·p̄en way·yā·ḇō ’el- bê·ṯōw wə·lō- šāṯ gam- lā·zōṯ lib·bōwWLC · 23

So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, because they could not drink the water from the river.

כָל־ מִצְרַ֛יִם וַיַּחְפְּר֧וּ סְבִיבֹ֥ת הַיְאֹ֖ר מַ֣יִם לִשְׁתּ֑וֹת כִּ֣י יָֽכְלוּ֙ לֹ֤א לִשְׁתֹּ֔ת מִמֵּימֵ֖י הַיְאֹֽר׃ ḵāl miṣ·ra·yim way·yaḥ·pə·rū sə·ḇî·ḇōṯ hay·’ōr ma·yim liš·tō·wṯ kî yā·ḵə·lū lō liš·tōṯ mim·mê·mê hay·’ōrWLC · 24

And seven full days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.
