Chapter 1

Laws for Burnt Offerings

1

Then the LORD… called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָה֙ אֵלָ֔יו וַיִּקְרָ֖א מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־ מֵאֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh ’ê·lāw way·yiq·rā mō·šeh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mê·’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Speak to the Israelites… and tell them: When any of you brings an offering to the LORD, you may bring as your offering an animal from the herd… or the flock.

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍

דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־ בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־ אָדָ֗ם מִכֶּ֛ם יַקְרִ֥יב קָרְבָּ֖ן לַֽיהוָ֑ה תַּקְרִ֖יבוּ אֶת־ קָרְבַּנְכֶֽם׃ מִן־ הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה מִן־ הַבָּקָר֙ וּמִן־ הַצֹּ֔אן dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kî- ’ā·ḏām mik·kem yaq·rîḇ qār·bān Yah·weh taq·rî·ḇū ’eṯ- qā·rə·ban·ḵem min- hab·bə·hê·māh min- hab·bā·qār ū·min- haṣ·ṣōnWLC · 2

If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to present an unblemished male. He must bring it to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting for its acceptance before the LORD.

𐤀𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤓𐤑𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

אִם־ קָרְבָּנוֹ֙ עֹלָ֤ה מִן־ הַבָּקָ֔ר יַקְרִיבֶ֑נּוּ תָּמִ֖ים זָכָ֥ר יַקְרִ֣יב אֹת֔וֹ אֶל־ פֶּ֝תַח אֹ֤הֶל מוֹעֵד֙ לִרְצֹנ֖וֹ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ ’im- qā·rə·bā·nōw ‘ō·lāh min- hab·bā·qār yaq·rî·ḇen·nū tā·mîm zā·ḵār yaq·rîḇ ’ō·ṯōw ’el- pɛ·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ lir·ṣō·nōw lip̄·nê Yah·wehWLC · 3

He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so it can be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

𐤅𐤎𐤌𐤊 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

וְסָמַ֣ךְ יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל רֹ֣אשׁ הָעֹלָ֑ה וְנִרְצָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְכַפֵּ֥ר עָלָֽיו׃ wə·sā·maḵ yā·ḏōw ‘al rōš hā·‘ō·lāh wə·nir·ṣāh lōw lə·ḵap·pêr ‘ā·lāwWLC · 4

And he shall slaughter the young bull before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests are to present the blood and splatter it on all sides of the altar at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

𐤅𐤔𐤇𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤄𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃

וְשָׁחַ֛ט אֶת־ בֶּ֥ן הַבָּקָ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אַהֲרֹ֤ן בְּנֵ֨י הַֽכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ אֶת־ וְ֠הִקְרִיבוּ הַדָּ֔ם וְזָרְק֨וּ אֶת־ הַדָּ֤ם סָבִ֔יב עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ אֲשֶׁר־ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃ wə·šā·ḥaṭ ’eṯ- ben hab·bā·qār lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’a·hă·rōn bə·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm ’eṯ- wə·hiq·rî·ḇū had·dām wə·zā·rə·qū ’eṯ- had·dām sā·ḇîḇ ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ ’ă·šer- pe·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 5

Next, he is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.

𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤔𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤄

וְהִפְשִׁ֖יט אֶת־ הָעֹלָ֑ה וְנִתַּ֥ח אֹתָ֖הּ לִנְתָחֶֽיהָ׃ wə·hip̄·šîṭ ’eṯ- hā·‘ō·lāh wə·nit·taḥ ’ō·ṯāh lin·ṯā·ḥe·hāWLC · 6

The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔

בְּנֵ֨י אַהֲרֹ֧ן הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְ֠נָתְנוּ אֵ֖שׁ עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְעָרְכ֥וּ עֵצִ֖ים עַל־ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ bə·nê ’a·hă·rōn hak·kō·hên wə·nā·ṯə·nū ’êš ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ wə·‘ā·rə·ḵū ‘ê·ṣîm ‘al- hā·’êšWLC · 7

Then Aaron’s sons the priests are to arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, atop the burning - wood on the altar.

𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤃𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇

אַהֲרֹן֙ בְּנֵ֤י הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים אֵ֚ת וְעָרְכ֗וּ הַנְּתָחִ֔ים אֶת־ הָרֹ֖אשׁ וְאֶת־ הַפָּ֑דֶר עַל־ הָאֵ֔שׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ הָעֵצִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ ’a·hă·rōn bə·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm ’êṯ wə·‘ā·rə·ḵū han·nə·ṯā·ḥîm ’eṯ- hā·rōš wə·’eṯ- hap·pā·ḏer ‘al- hā·’êš ’ă·šer ‘al- hā·‘ê·ṣîm ’ă·šer ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 8

The entrails and legs must be washed with water, and the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤑 𐤁𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤇 𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎

וְקִרְבּ֥וֹ וּכְרָעָ֖יו יִרְחַ֣ץ בַּמָּ֑יִם הַכֹּהֵ֤ן אֶת־ וְהִקְטִ֨יר הַכֹּל֙ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה עֹלָ֛ה אִשֵּׁ֥ה נִיח֖וֹחַ רֵֽיחַ־ לַֽיהוָֽה׃ס wə·qir·bōw ū·ḵə·rā·‘āw yir·ḥaṣ bam·mā·yim hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- wə·hiq·ṭîr hak·kōl ham·miz·bê·ḥāh ‘ō·lāh ’iš·šêh nî·ḥō·w·aḥ rê·aḥ- Yah·wehWLC · 9

If, however, one’s offering is a burnt offering from the flock— from the sheep or… goats— he is to present an unblemished male.

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤆𐤊𐤓

וְאִם־ קָרְבָּנ֧וֹ לְעֹלָ֑ה מִן־ הַצֹּ֨אן מִן־ הַכְּשָׂבִ֛ים א֥וֹ מִן־ הָעִזִּ֖ים יַקְרִיבֶֽנּוּ׃ תָּמִ֖ים זָכָ֥ר wə·’im- qā·rə·bā·nōw lə·‘ō·lāh min- haṣ·ṣōn min- hak·kə·śā·ḇîm ’ōw min- hā·‘iz·zîm yaq·rî·ḇen·nū tā·mîm zā·ḵārWLC · 10

He shall slaughter it on the north side of the altar before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests are to splatter its blood against the altar on all sides.

𐤅𐤔𐤇𐤈 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤒𐤅 𐤃𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁

וְשָׁחַ֨ט אֹת֜וֹ עַ֣ל צָפֹ֖נָה יֶ֧רֶךְ הַמִּזְבֵּ֛חַ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אַהֲרֹ֨ן בְּנֵי֩ הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים אֶת־ וְזָרְק֡וּ דָּמ֛וֹ עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ סָבִֽיב׃ wə·šā·ḥaṭ ’ō·ṯōw ‘al ṣā·p̄ō·nāh ye·reḵ ham·miz·bê·aḥ lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’a·hă·rōn bə·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm ’eṯ- wə·zā·rə·qū dā·mōw ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ sā·ḇîḇWLC · 11

He is to cut [the animal] into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and fat, atop the burning - wood that [is] on the altar.

𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤃𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇

וְנִתַּ֤ח אֹתוֹ֙ לִנְתָחָ֔יו הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְעָרַ֤ךְ אֹתָ֔ם וְאֶת־ רֹאשׁ֖וֹ וְאֶת־ פִּדְר֑וֹ עַל־ הָאֵ֔שׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ הָֽעֵצִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ wə·nit·taḥ ’ō·ṯōw lin·ṯā·ḥāw hak·kō·hên wə·‘ā·raḵ ’ō·ṯām wə·’eṯ- rō·šōw wə·’eṯ- piḏ·rōw ‘al- hā·’êš ’ă·šer ‘al- hā·‘ê·ṣîm ’ă·šer ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 12

The entrails and legs must be washed with water, and the priest shall present all of it and burn [it] on the altar; it is a burnt offering, a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

וְהַקֶּ֥רֶב וְהַכְּרָעַ֖יִם יִרְחַ֣ץ בַּמָּ֑יִם הַכֹּהֵ֤ן אֶת־ וְהִקְרִ֨יב הַכֹּל֙ וְהִקְטִ֣יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה ה֗וּא עֹלָ֣ה אִשֵּׁ֛ה נִיחֹ֖חַ רֵ֥יחַ לַיהוָֽה׃פ wə·haq·qe·reḇ wə·hak·kə·rā·‘a·yim yir·ḥaṣ bam·mā·yim hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- wə·hiq·rîḇ hak·kōl wə·hiq·ṭîr ham·miz·bê·ḥāh hū ‘ō·lāh ’iš·šêh nî·ḥō·aḥ rê·aḥ Yah·wehWLC · 13

If, instead, one’s offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, he is to present… a turtledove or… a young pigeon. -

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕

וְאִ֧ם קָרְבָּנ֖וֹ לַֽיהוָ֑ה עֹלָ֥ה מִן־ הָע֛וֹף וְהִקְרִ֣יב קָרְבָּנֽוֹ׃ מִן־ הַתֹּרִ֗ים א֛וֹ מִן־ בְּנֵ֥י הַיּוֹנָ֖ה אֶת־ wə·’im qā·rə·bā·nōw Yah·weh ‘ō·lāh min- hā·‘ō·wp̄ wə·hiq·rîḇ qā·rə·bā·nōw min- hat·tō·rîm ’ōw min- bə·nê hay·yō·w·nāh ’eṯ-WLC · 14

Then the priest shall bring it to the altar, twist off its head, and burn it on the altar; its blood should be drained out on the side of the altar.

𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤃𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇

הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְהִקְרִיב֤וֹ אֶל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וּמָלַק֙ אֶת־ רֹאשׁ֔וֹ וְהִקְטִ֖יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חָה דָמ֔וֹ וְנִמְצָ֣ה עַ֖ל קִ֥יר הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ hak·kō·hên wə·hiq·rî·ḇōw ’el- ham·miz·bê·aḥ ū·mā·laq ’eṯ- rō·šōw wə·hiq·ṭîr ham·miz·bê·ḥāh ḏā·mōw wə·nim·ṣāh ‘al qîr ham·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 15

And he is to remove the crop with its contents and throw it to the east side of the altar, in the place for ashes.

𐤅𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤑𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤃𐤔𐤍

וְהֵסִ֥יר אֶת־ מֻרְאָת֖וֹ בְּנֹצָתָ֑הּ וְהִשְׁלִ֨יךְ אֹתָ֜הּ קֵ֔דְמָה אֵ֤צֶל הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ אֶל־ מְק֖וֹם הַדָּֽשֶׁן׃ wə·hê·sîr ’eṯ- mur·’ā·ṯōw bə·nō·ṣā·ṯāh wə·hiš·lîḵ ’ō·ṯāh qê·ḏə·māh ’ê·ṣel ham·miz·bê·aḥ ’el- mə·qō·wm had·dā·šenWLC · 16

He shall tear it open by its wings, without dividing [ the bird ] completely. And the priest is to burn it on the altar atop the burning wood. - It is a burnt offering, a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

𐤅𐤔𐤎𐤏 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤇 𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎

וְשִׁסַּ֨ע אֹת֣וֹ בִכְנָפָיו֮ לֹ֣א יַבְדִּיל֒ הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְהִקְטִ֨יר אֹת֤וֹ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה עַל־ הָאֵ֑שׁ הָעֵצִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ ה֗וּא עֹלָ֣ה אִשֵּׁ֛ה נִיחֹ֖חַ רֵ֥יחַ לַיהוָֽה׃ס wə·šis·sa‘ ’ō·ṯōw ḇiḵ·nā·p̄āw lō yaḇ·dîl hak·kō·hên wə·hiq·ṭîr ’ō·ṯōw ham·miz·bê·ḥāh ‘al- hā·’êš hā·‘ê·ṣîm ’ă·šer ‘al- hū ‘ō·lāh ’iš·šêh nî·ḥō·aḥ rê·aḥ Yah·wehWLC · 17
