Laws about Skin Diseases

Then the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron…,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוָ֔ה וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“When someone has a swelling or rash or bright spot on his skin… that may be an infectious skin… disease, he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest.

The priest is to examine the infection on his skin…, and if the hair in the infection has turned white and the sore appears to be deeper than the skin…,… it is a skin disease. After the priest examines him, he must pronounce him unclean -.

הַכֹּהֵ֣ן אֶת־ וְרָאָ֣ה הַנֶּ֣גַע בְּעֽוֹר־ הַ֠בָּשָׂר וְשֵׂעָ֨ר בַּנֶּ֜גַע הָפַ֣ךְ׀ לָבָ֗ן הַנֶּ֙גַע֙ וּמַרְאֵ֤ה עָמֹק֙ מֵע֣וֹר בְּשָׂר֔וֹ נֶ֥גַע ה֑וּא צָרַ֖עַת הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְרָאָ֥הוּ וְטִמֵּ֥א אֹתֽוֹ׃ hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- wə·rā·’āh han·ne·ḡa‘ bə·‘ō·wr- hab·bā·śār wə·śê·‘ār ban·ne·ḡa‘ hā·p̄aḵ lā·ḇān han·ne·ḡa‘ ū·mar·’êh ‘ā·mōq mê·‘ō·wr bə·śā·rōw ne·ḡa‘ hū ṣā·ra·‘aṯ hak·kō·hên wə·rā·’ā·hū wə·ṭim·mê ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 3

If, however, the spot on his skin… is white… and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.

וְאִם־ בַּהֶרֶת֩ בְּע֣וֹר בְּשָׂר֗וֹ לְבָנָ֨ה הִ֜וא אֵין־ מַרְאֶ֣הָ וְעָמֹק֙ מִן־ הָע֔וֹר וּשְׂעָרָ֖ה לֹא־ הָפַ֣ךְ לָבָ֑ן הַכֹּהֵ֛ן אֶת־ וְהִסְגִּ֧יר הַנֶּ֖גַע שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃ wə·’im- ba·he·reṯ bə·‘ō·wr bə·śā·rōw lə·ḇā·nāh hî ’ên- mar·’e·hā wə·‘ā·mōq min- hā·‘ō·wr ū·śə·‘ā·rāh lō- hā·p̄aḵ lā·ḇān hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- wə·his·gîr han·ne·ḡa‘ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm — WLC · 4

On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if he sees that the infection is unchanged and has not spread… on the skin, the priest must isolate him for another seven days.

הַשְּׁבִיעִי֒ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַכֹּהֵן֮ וְרָאָ֣הוּ וְהִנֵּ֤ה בְּעֵינָ֔יו הַנֶּ֙גַע֙ עָמַ֣ד לֹֽא־ פָשָׂ֥ה הַנֶּ֖גַע בָּע֑וֹר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְהִסְגִּיר֧וֹ שֵׁנִֽית׃ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm hak·kō·hên wə·rā·’ā·hū wə·hin·nêh bə·‘ê·nāw han·ne·ḡa‘ ‘ā·maḏ lō- p̄ā·śāh han·ne·ḡa‘ bā·‘ō·wr hak·kō·hên wə·his·gî·rōw šê·nîṯ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm — WLC · 5

The priest will examine him again on the seventh day, and if the sore has faded and has not spread… on the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is a rash. The person must wash his clothes and be clean.

הַכֹּהֵ֨ן אֹת֜וֹ וְרָאָה֩ שֵׁנִית֒ הַשְּׁבִיעִי֮ בַּיּ֣וֹם וְהִנֵּה֙ הַנֶּ֔גַע כֵּהָ֣ה וְלֹא־ פָשָׂ֥ה הַנֶּ֖גַע בָּע֑וֹר הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְטִהֲר֤וֹ הִ֔יא מִסְפַּ֣חַת וְכִבֶּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָהֵֽר׃ hak·kō·hên ’ō·ṯōw wə·rā·’āh šê·nîṯ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm wə·hin·nêh han·ne·ḡa‘ kê·hāh wə·lō- p̄ā·śāh han·ne·ḡa‘ bā·‘ō·wr hak·kō·hên wə·ṭi·hă·rōw hî mis·pa·ḥaṯ wə·ḵib·bes bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·ṭā·hêr — WLC · 6

But if the rash spreads further… on his skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he must present himself again to the priest.

וְאִם־ הַמִּסְפַּ֙חַת֙ פָּשֹׂ֨ה תִפְשֶׂ֤ה בָּע֔וֹר אַחֲרֵ֧י הֵרָאֹת֛וֹ אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן לְטָהֳרָת֑וֹ וְנִרְאָ֥ה שֵׁנִ֖ית אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ wə·’im- ham·mis·pa·ḥaṯ pā·śōh ṯip̄·śeh bā·‘ō·wr ’a·ḥă·rê hê·rā·’ō·ṯōw ’el- hak·kō·hên lə·ṭā·ho·rā·ṯōw wə·nir·’āh šê·nîṯ ’el- hak·kō·hên — WLC · 7

The priest will reexamine him, and if the rash has spread on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it [is] a skin disease.

הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְרָאָה֙ וְהִנֵּ֛ה הַמִּסְפַּ֖חַת פָּשְׂתָ֥ה בָּע֑וֹר הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְטִמְּא֥וֹ הִֽוא׃פ צָרַ֥עַת hak·kō·hên wə·rā·’āh wə·hin·nêh ham·mis·pa·ḥaṯ pā·śə·ṯāh bā·‘ō·wr hak·kō·hên wə·ṭim·mə·’ōw hî ṣā·ra·‘aṯ — WLC · 8

When anyone develops a skin disease he must be brought to the priest.
𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤑𐤓𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍
כִּ֥י בְּאָדָ֑ם תִהְיֶ֖ה נֶ֣גַע צָרַ֔עַת וְהוּבָ֖א אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ kî bə·’ā·ḏām ṯih·yeh ne·ḡa‘ ṣā·ra·‘aṯ wə·hū·ḇā ’el- hak·kō·hên — WLC · 9

The priest will examine him, and if there is a white swelling on the skin that has turned the hair white,… and there is raw flesh in the swelling,
𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤄 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤀𐤕
הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְרָאָ֣ה וְהִנֵּ֤ה לְבָנָה֙ שְׂאֵת־ בָּע֔וֹר וְהִ֕יא הָפְכָ֖ה שֵׂעָ֣ר לָבָ֑ן וּמִֽחְיַ֛ת חַ֖י בָּשָׂ֥ר בַּשְׂאֵֽת׃ hak·kō·hên wə·rā·’āh wə·hin·nêh lə·ḇā·nāh śə·’êṯ- bā·‘ō·wr wə·hî hā·p̄ə·ḵāh śê·‘ār lā·ḇān ū·miḥ·yaṯ ḥay bā·śār baś·’êṯ — WLC · 10

it is a chronic skin disease… and the priest must pronounce him unclean. He need not isolate him, for he is unclean.

הִוא֙ נוֹשֶׁ֤נֶת צָרַ֨עַת בְּע֣וֹר בְּשָׂר֔וֹ הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְטִמְּא֖וֹ לֹ֣א יַסְגִּרֶ֔נּוּ כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ טָמֵ֖א hî nō·wō·še·neṯ ṣā·ra·‘aṯ bə·‘ō·wr bə·śā·rōw hak·kō·hên wə·ṭim·mə·’ōw lō yas·gi·ren·nū kî hū ṭā·mê — WLC · 11

But if the skin disease breaks out… all over his skin so that it covers all the skin of the infected person from head to foot,… as far as the priest can see,…

וְאִם־ הַצָּרַ֙עַת֙ פָּר֨וֹחַ תִּפְרַ֤ח בָּע֔וֹר הַצָּרַ֗עַת אֵ֚ת וְכִסְּתָ֣ה כָּל־ ע֣וֹר הַנֶּ֔גַע מֵרֹאשׁ֖וֹ וְעַד־ רַגְלָ֑יו לְכָל־ הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ מַרְאֵ֖ה עֵינֵ֥י wə·’im- haṣ·ṣā·ra·‘aṯ pā·rō·w·aḥ tip̄·raḥ bā·‘ō·wr haṣ·ṣā·ra·‘aṯ ’êṯ wə·ḵis·sə·ṯāh kāl- ‘ō·wr han·ne·ḡa‘ mê·rō·šōw wə·‘aḏ- raḡ·lāw lə·ḵāl hak·kō·hên mar·’êh ‘ê·nê — WLC · 12

the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has covered his entire body, he is to pronounce the infected person clean. Since it has all turned… white, he is clean.

הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְרָאָ֣ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַצָּרַ֙עַת֙ אֶת־ כִסְּתָ֤ה כָּל־ בְּשָׂר֔וֹ הַנָּ֑גַע וְטִהַ֖ר אֶת־ הָפַ֥ךְ כֻּלּ֛וֹ לָבָ֖ן הֽוּא׃ טָה֥וֹר hak·kō·hên wə·rā·’āh wə·hin·nêh haṣ·ṣā·ra·‘aṯ ’eṯ- ḵis·sə·ṯāh kāl- bə·śā·rōw han·nā·ḡa‘ wə·ṭi·har ’eṯ- hā·p̄aḵ kul·lōw lā·ḇān hū ṭā·hō·wr — WLC · 13

But whenever raw flesh appears on [someone], he will be unclean.

וּבְי֨וֹם חַ֖י בָּשָׂ֥ר הֵרָא֥וֹת בּ֛וֹ יִטְמָֽא׃ ū·ḇə·yō·wm ḥay bā·śār hê·rā·’ō·wṯ bōw yiṭ·mā — WLC · 14

When the priest sees the raw flesh, he must pronounce him unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; it is a skin disease…

הַכֹּהֵ֛ן אֶת־ וְרָאָ֧ה הַחַ֖י הַבָּשָׂ֥ר וְטִמְּא֑וֹ הַחַ֛י הַבָּשָׂ֥ר טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא צָרַ֥עַת הֽוּא׃ hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- wə·rā·’āh ha·ḥay hab·bā·śār wə·ṭim·mə·’ōw ha·ḥay hab·bā·śār ṭā·mê hū ṣā·ra·‘aṯ hū — WLC · 15

But if the raw flesh changes and turns white, he must go to the priest.

א֣וֹ כִ֥י הַחַ֖י הַבָּשָׂ֥ר יָשׁ֛וּב וְנֶהְפַּ֣ךְ לְלָבָ֑ן וּבָ֖א אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ ’ōw ḵî ha·ḥay hab·bā·śār yā·šūḇ wə·neh·paḵ lə·lā·ḇān ū·ḇā ’el- hak·kō·hên — WLC · 16

The priest will reexamine him, and if the infection has turned white, the priest is to pronounce the infected person clean; then he is clean.

When a boil appears on someone’s skin… and it heals,
𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤐𐤀
כִּֽי־ שְׁחִ֑ין יִהְיֶ֥ה בֽוֹ־ בְעֹר֖וֹ וּבָשָׂ֕ר וְנִרְפָּֽא׃ kî- šə·ḥîn yih·yeh ḇōw- ḇə·‘ō·rōw ū·ḇā·śār wə·nir·pā — WLC · 18

and a white swelling or a reddish-white… spot develops where the boil was, he must present himself to the priest.

The priest shall examine it, and if it appears to be beneath… the skin and the hair in it has turned white, the priest… shall pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection that has broken out in the boil.

But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in it, and it is not… beneath the skin… and has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days.

If it spreads any further… on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is an infection.

But if the spot remains unchanged and does not spread, it is only the scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

When there is a burn… on someone’s skin and the raw [area] of the burn… becomes reddish-white… or white,

On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if it has spread further… on the skin, the priest - must pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection.

If a man or woman has an infection on the head or chin,

the priest shall examine the infection, and if it appears to be deeper than the skin and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest must pronounce him unclean -; it is a scaly outbreak, an infectious disease of the head or chin…

But if the priest examines the scaly infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest shall isolate the infected person… for seven days.

then the person must shave himself except for… the scaly area. Then the priest shall isolate [him] for another seven days.
