Unlawful Sexual Relations

vvv You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live [and you must not follow] the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you. - You must not walk in their customs…

אֶת־ תַּעֲשׂ֛וּ וְאֶת־ מִשְׁפָּטַ֧י תִּשְׁמְר֖וּ חֻקֹּתַ֥י לָלֶ֣כֶת בָּהֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ ’eṯ- ta·‘ă·śū wə·’eṯ- miš·pā·ṭay tiš·mə·rū ḥuq·qō·ṯay lā·le·ḵeṯ bā·hem ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 4

Keep My statutes and My judgments, [for] the man who does these things will live by them. I am the LORD.

None of… you are to approach any close relative… to have sexual relations… I am the LORD.

אִ֥ישׁ אִישׁ֙ אֶל־ תִקְרְב֖וּ כָּל־ לֹ֥א שְׁאֵ֣ר בְּשָׂר֔וֹ לְגַלּ֣וֹת עֶרְוָ֑ה אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֽה׃ס ’îš ’îš ’el- ṯiq·rə·ḇū kāl- lō šə·’êr bə·śā·rōw lə·ḡal·lō·wṯ ‘er·wāh ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 6

You must not expose the nakedness of your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her…

לֹ֣א עֶרְוַ֥ת אָבִ֛יךָ וְעֶרְוַ֥ת תְגַלֵּ֑ה אִמְּךָ֖ הִ֔וא אִמְּךָ֣ לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ס lō ‘er·waṯ ’ā·ḇî·ḵā wə·‘er·waṯ ṯə·ḡal·lêh ’im·mə·ḵā hî ’im·mə·ḵā lō ṯə·ḡal·leh ‘er·wā·ṯāh — WLC · 7

You must not have sexual relations with… your father’s wife; it would dishonor your father.

You must not have sexual relations with… your sister, either your father’s daughter or… your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.

לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽן׃ס עֶרְוַ֨ת אֲחֽוֹתְךָ֤ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ בַת־ א֣וֹ בַת־ אִמֶּ֔ךָ מוֹלֶ֣דֶת בַּ֔יִת א֖וֹ מוֹלֶ֣דֶת ח֑וּץ lō ṯə·ḡal·leh ‘er·wā·ṯān ‘er·waṯ ’ă·ḥō·wṯ·ḵā ’ā·ḇî·ḵā ḇaṯ- ’ōw ḇaṯ- ’im·me·ḵā mō·w·le·ḏeṯ ba·yiṯ ’ōw mō·w·le·ḏeṯ ḥūṣ — WLC · 9

You must not have sexual relations with… your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for that would shame your family.

You must not have sexual relations with… the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.

You must not have sexual relations with… your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.

You must not {dishonor} your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her…; she [is] your aunt.

You must not have sexual relations with… your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sexual relations with her…

You must not have sexual relations with… your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.

You must not have sexual relations with both… a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter and have sexual relations with her… They are close relatives; it is depraved.

לֹ֣א עֶרְוַ֥ת תְגַלֵּ֑ה אֶֽת־ אִשָּׁ֛ה וּבִתָּ֖הּ לֹ֤א תִקַּח֙ בְּנָ֞הּ וְאֶת־ בַּת־ בַּת־ בִּתָּ֗הּ לְגַלּ֣וֹת עֶרְוָתָ֔הּ הֵ֖נָּה שַׁאֲרָ֥ה הִֽוא זִמָּ֥ה lō ‘er·waṯ ṯə·ḡal·lêh ’eṯ- ’iš·šāh ū·ḇit·tāh lō ṯiq·qaḥ bə·nāh wə·’eṯ- baṯ- baṯ- bit·tāh lə·ḡal·lō·wṯ ‘er·wā·ṯāh hên·nāh ša·’ă·rāh hī zim·māh — WLC · 17

You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her… while your wife is still alive.

לֹ֣א תִקָּ֑ח וְאִשָּׁ֥ה אֶל־ אֲחֹתָ֖הּ לִצְרֹ֗ר לְגַלּ֧וֹת עֶרְוָתָ֛הּ עָלֶ֖יהָ בְּחַיֶּֽיהָ׃ lō ṯiq·qāḥ wə·’iš·šāh ’el- ’ă·ḥō·ṯāh liṣ·rōr lə·ḡal·lō·wṯ ‘er·wā·ṯāh ‘ā·le·hā bə·ḥay·ye·hā — WLC · 18

- You must not approach a woman to have sexual relations with her… during her menstrual period…

וְאֶל־ לֹ֣א תִקְרַ֔ב אִשָּׁ֖ה לְגַלּ֖וֹת עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ בְּנִדַּ֣ת טֻמְאָתָ֑הּ wə·’el- lō ṯiq·raḇ ’iš·šāh lə·ḡal·lō·wṯ ‘er·wā·ṯāh bə·nid·daṯ ṭum·’ā·ṯāh — WLC · 19

You must not lie carnally… with your neighbor’s wife and thus defile yourself with her.

לֹא־ תִתֵּ֥ן שְׁכָבְתְּךָ֖ לְזָ֑רַע וְאֶל־ עֲמִֽיתְךָ֔ אֵ֙שֶׁת֙ לְטָמְאָה־ בָֽהּ׃ lō- ṯit·tên šə·ḵā·ḇə·tə·ḵā lə·zā·ra‘ wə·’el- ‘ă·mî·ṯə·ḵā ’ê·šeṯ lə·ṭā·mə·’āh- ḇāh — WLC · 20

You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

לֹא־ תִתֵּ֖ן וּמִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֥ לְהַעֲבִ֣יר לַמֹּ֑לֶךְ וְלֹ֧א תְחַלֵּ֛ל אֶת־ שֵׁ֥ם אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ lō- ṯit·tên ū·miz·zar·‘ă·ḵā lə·ha·‘ă·ḇîr lam·mō·leḵ wə·lō ṯə·ḥal·lêl ’eṯ- šêm ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 21

You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that [is] an abomination.

לֹ֥א תִשְׁכַּ֖ב וְאֶ֨ת־ זָכָ֔ר מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אִשָּׁ֑ה הִֽוא׃ תּוֹעֵבָ֖ה lō ṯiš·kaḇ wə·’eṯ- zā·ḵār miš·kə·ḇê ’iš·šāh hî tō·w·‘ê·ḇāh — WLC · 22

You must not lie carnally with any animal, thus defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion.

לֹא־ תִתֵּ֥ן שְׁכָבְתְּךָ֖ וּבְכָל־ בְּהֵמָ֛ה לְטָמְאָה־ בָ֑הּ וְאִשָּׁ֗ה לֹֽא־ תַעֲמֹ֞ד לִפְנֵ֧י בְהֵמָ֛ה לְרִבְעָ֖הּ הֽוּא׃ תֶּ֥בֶל lō- ṯit·tên šə·ḵā·ḇə·tə·ḵā ū·ḇə·ḵāl bə·hê·māh lə·ṭā·mə·’āh- ḇāh wə·’iš·šāh lō- ṯa·‘ă·mōḏ lip̄·nê ḇə·hê·māh lə·riḇ·‘āh hū te·ḇel — WLC · 23

Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices, for by all these things the nations I am driving out before you have defiled themselves.

אַל־ תִּֽטַּמְּא֖וּ בְּכָל־ אֵ֑לֶּה כִּ֤י בְכָל־ אֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ אֲנִ֥י מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃ נִטְמְא֣וּ ’al- tiṭ·ṭam·mə·’ū bə·ḵāl ’êl·leh kî ḇə·ḵāl- ’êl·leh hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer- ’ă·nî mə·šal·lê·aḥ mip·pə·nê·ḵem niṭ·mə·’ū — WLC · 24

Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land… will vomit out its inhabitants.

הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתִּטְמָ֣א וָאֶפְקֹ֥ד עֲוֺנָ֖הּ הָאָ֖רֶץ עָלֶ֑יהָ וַתָּקִ֥א אֶת־ יֹשְׁבֶֽיהָ׃ hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiṭ·mā wā·’ep̄·qōḏ ‘ă·wō·nāh hā·’ā·reṣ ‘ā·le·hā wat·tā·qi ’eṯ- yō·šə·ḇe·hā — WLC · 25

But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances, and you must not commit any of these abominations— neither your native-born nor the foreigner who lives among you.

אַתֶּ֗ם אֶת־ וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם חֻקֹּתַי֙ וְאֶת־ מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י וְלֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֔וּ מִכֹּ֥ל הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֖ת הָֽאֶזְרָ֔ח וְהַגֵּ֖ר הַגָּ֥ר בְּתוֹכְכֶֽם׃ ’at·tem ’eṯ- ū·šə·mar·tem ḥuq·qō·ṯay wə·’eṯ- miš·pā·ṭay wə·lō ṯa·‘ă·śū mik·kōl hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇōṯ hā·’ez·rāḥ wə·hag·gêr hag·gār bə·ṯō·wḵ·ḵem — WLC · 26

For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.

כִּ֚י אֶת־ אַנְשֵֽׁי־ הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם עָשׂ֥וּ כָּל־ הָאֵ֔ל הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֣ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וַתִּטְמָ֖א kî ’eṯ- ’an·šê- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer lip̄·nê·ḵem ‘ā·śū kāl- hā·’êl hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiṭ·mā — WLC · 27

So if you defile the land,… it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you.

בְּטַֽמַּאֲכֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑הּ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וְלֹֽא־ תָקִ֤יא אֶתְכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר קָאָ֛ה אֶת־ הַגּ֖וֹי אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃ bə·ṭam·ma·’ă·ḵem ’ō·ṯāh hā·’ā·reṣ wə·lō- ṯā·qî ’eṯ·ḵem ka·’ă·šer qā·’āh ’eṯ- hag·gō·w ’ă·šer lip̄·nê·ḵem — WLC · 28

Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off… from among his people.

כִּ֚י כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה מִכֹּ֥ל הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַתּוֹעֵב֖וֹת וְנִכְרְת֛וּ הַנְּפָשׁ֥וֹת הָעֹשֹׂ֖ת מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמָּֽם׃ kî kāl- ’ă·šer ya·‘ă·śeh mik·kōl hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ wə·niḵ·rə·ṯū han·nə·p̄ā·šō·wṯ hā·‘ō·śōṯ miq·qe·reḇ ‘am·mām — WLC · 29

You must keep My charge not to practice [any] of the abominable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
