Chapter 24
The Oil for the Lamps

“Command the Israelites… to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.
𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤆𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤊𐤕𐤉𐤕 𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃

Outside the veil of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps continually before the LORD from evening until morning. This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to come.

He shall tend the lamps on the pure [gold] lampstand before the LORD continually.

The Showbread

You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve… loaves, using two-tenths of an ephah… for each loaf,

וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ סֹ֔לֶת וְאָפִיתָ֣ אֹתָ֔הּ שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה חַלּ֑וֹת יִהְיֶ֖ה שְׁנֵי֙ עֶשְׂרֹנִ֔ים הָאֶחָֽת׃ הַֽחַלָּ֥ה wə·lā·qaḥ·tā sō·leṯ wə·’ā·p̄î·ṯā ’ō·ṯāh šə·têm ‘eś·rêh ḥal·lō·wṯ yih·yeh šə·nê ‘eś·rō·nîm hā·’e·ḥāṯ ha·ḥal·lāh — WLC · 5

and set them in two rows— six per row— on the table of pure gold before the LORD.

And you are to place pure frankincense near each row, so that it may serve as a memorial portion for the bread, a food offering to the LORD.

Every Sabbath day… the bread is to be set out before the LORD… vvv on behalf of the Israelites as a permanent covenant.

בְּי֨וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֜ת בְּי֣וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת יַֽעַרְכֶ֛נּוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה תָּמִ֑יד מֵאֵ֥ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עוֹלָֽם׃ בְּרִ֥ית bə·yō·wm haš·šab·bāṯ bə·yō·wm haš·šab·bāṯ ya·‘ar·ḵen·nū lip̄·nê Yah·weh tā·mîḏ mê·’êṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ‘ō·w·lām bə·rîṯ — WLC · 8

It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place; for it [is] to him a most holy [part] of the food offerings to the LORD— [his] portion forever.”

Punishment for Blasphemy

Now the son of an Israelite… mother and an Egyptian father went out among vvv the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp [between him]… and an Israelite -.

The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name with a curse. So they brought him to Moses. (His mother’s name was Shelomith daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.)

They placed him in custody until the will of the LORD should be made clear to them…

“Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and have all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then have the whole assembly stone him.

הוֹצֵ֣א אֶת־ הַֽמְקַלֵּ֗ל אֶל־ מִחוּץ֙ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה כָֽל־ הַשֹּׁמְעִ֛ים אֶת־ וְסָמְכ֧וּ יְדֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־ רֹאשׁ֑וֹ כָּל־ הָעֵדָֽה׃ וְרָגְמ֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ hō·w·ṣê ’eṯ- ham·qal·lêl ’el- mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh ḵāl haš·šō·mə·‘îm ’eṯ- wə·sā·mə·ḵū yə·ḏê·hem ‘al- rō·šōw kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh wə·rā·ḡə·mū ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 14

- And you are to tell… the Israelites…, ‘If anyone… curses his God, he shall bear the consequences of his sin.

וְאֶל־ תְּדַבֵּ֣ר לֵאמֹ֑ר בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כִּֽי־ אִ֥ישׁ אִ֛ישׁ יְקַלֵּ֥ל אֱלֹהָ֖יו וְנָשָׂ֥א חֶטְאֽוֹ׃ wə·’el- tə·ḏab·bêr lê·mōr bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl kî- ’îš ’îš yə·qal·lêl ’ĕ·lō·hāw wə·nā·śā ḥeṭ·’ōw — WLC · 15

Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must surely be put to death…; the whole assembly must surely stone… him, whether he is a foreign resident or native; if he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death.

וְנֹקֵ֤ב שֵׁם־ יְהוָה֙ מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֔ת כָּל־ הָעֵדָ֑ה רָג֥וֹם יִרְגְּמוּ־ ב֖וֹ כַּגֵּר֙ כָּֽאֶזְרָ֔ח בְּנָקְבוֹ־ שֵׁ֖ם יוּמָֽת׃ wə·nō·qêḇ šêm- Yah·weh mō·wṯ yū·māṯ kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh rā·ḡō·wm yir·gə·mū- ḇōw kag·gêr kā·’ez·rāḥ bə·nā·qə·ḇōw- šêm yū·māṯ — WLC · 16
An Eye for an Eye

And if a man takes the life of anyone else…, he must surely be put to death…

Whoever kills an animal must make restitution— life for… life.

וּמַכֵּ֥ה בְּהֵמָ֖ה יְשַׁלְּמֶ֑נָּה נֶֽפֶשׁ־ תַּ֥חַת נָֽפֶשׁ׃ נֶ֖פֶשׁ ū·mak·kêh bə·hê·māh yə·šal·lə·men·nāh ne·p̄eš- ta·ḥaṯ nā·p̄eš ne·p̄eš — WLC · 18

If anyone injures… his neighbor, whatever he has done… must be done to him:

כִּֽי־ וְאִ֕ישׁ יִתֵּ֥ן מ֖וּם בַּעֲמִית֑וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה כֵּ֖ן יֵעָ֥שֶׂה לּֽוֹ׃ kî- wə·’îš yit·tên mūm ba·‘ă·mî·ṯōw ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh kên yê·‘ā·śeh lōw — WLC · 19

fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Just as he injured… the other person, the same must be inflicted on him.

שֶׁ֚בֶר תַּ֣חַת שֶׁ֔בֶר עַ֚יִן תַּ֣חַת עַ֔יִן שֵׁ֖ן תַּ֣חַת שֵׁ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֥ן מוּם֙ בָּֽאָדָ֔ם כֵּ֖ן יִנָּ֥תֶן בּֽוֹ׃ še·b̲er ta·ḥaṯ še·ḇer ‘a·yin ta·ḥaṯ ‘a·yin šên ta·ḥaṯ šên ka·’ă·šer yit·tên mūm bā·’ā·ḏām kên yin·nā·ṯen bōw — WLC · 20

You are to have the same standard of law for the foreign resident and the native…; for I am the LORD your God.’”

Then Moses spoke to the Israelites…, and they took the blasphemer vvv outside the camp and stoned him. So the Israelites… did as the LORD had commanded Moses.
