Chapter 5

Sins Requiring a Sin Offering

1

[“]If someone sins by failing to testify when he hears a public charge about something he has witnessed, whether he has seen it or learned of it…, he shall bear the iniquity.

𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤅 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅

כִּֽי־ וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ תֶחֱטָ֗א ל֥וֹא יַגִּ֖יד וְשָֽׁמְעָה֙ ק֣וֹל אָלָ֔ה וְה֣וּא עֵ֔ד א֥וֹ רָאָ֖ה א֣וֹ יָדָ֑ע אִם־ וְנָשָׂ֥א עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ kî- wə·ne·p̄eš ṯe·ḥĕ·ṭā lō·w yag·gîḏ wə·šā·mə·‘āh qō·wl ’ā·lāh wə·hū ‘êḏ ’ōw rā·’āh ’ōw yā·ḏā‘ ’im- wə·nā·śā ‘ă·wō·nōwWLC · 1

Or if a person touches anything… unclean— whether the carcass of [any] unclean wild animal or… livestock or… crawling creature— even if he is unaware of it, he is unclean and guilty.

א֣וֹ נֶ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּגַּע֮ בְּכָל־ דָּבָ֣ר טָמֵא֒ אוֹ֩ בְנִבְלַ֨ת טְמֵאָ֗ה חַיָּ֜ה טְמֵאָ֔ה א֕וֹ בְּנִבְלַ֖ת בְּהֵמָ֣ה א֤וֹ בְּנִבְלַת֙ טָמֵ֑א שֶׁ֣רֶץ וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְה֥וּא טָמֵ֖א וְאָשֵֽׁם׃ ’ōw ne·p̄eš ’ă·šer tig·ga‘ bə·ḵāl dā·ḇār ṭā·mê ’ōw ḇə·niḇ·laṯ ṭə·mê·’āh ḥay·yāh ṭə·mê·’āh ’ōw bə·niḇ·laṯ bə·hê·māh ’ōw bə·niḇ·laṯ ṭā·mê še·reṣ wə·ne‘·lam mim·men·nū wə·hū ṭā·mê wə·’ā·šêmWLC · 2

Or if he touches human uncleanness— anything by which one becomes unclean even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty.

א֣וֹ כִ֤י יִגַּע֙ אָדָ֔ם בְּטֻמְאַ֣ת לְכֹל֙ טֻמְאָת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִטְמָ֖א בָּ֑הּ וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְה֥וּא יָדַ֖ע וְאָשֵֽׁם׃ ’ōw ḵî yig·ga‘ ’ā·ḏām bə·ṭum·’aṯ lə·ḵōl ṭum·’ā·ṯōw ’ă·šer yiṭ·mā bāh wə·ne‘·lam mim·men·nū wə·hū yā·ḏa‘ wə·’ā·šêmWLC · 3

Or if someone swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do anything good or evil— in whatever matter a man may rashly pronounce an oath— even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty vvv in [the matter].

א֣וֹ כִּ֣י נֶ֡פֶשׁ תִשָּׁבַע֩ לְבַטֵּ֨א בִשְׂפָתַ֜יִם לְהֵיטִ֗יב א֣וֹ לְהָרַ֣ע׀ לְ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָאָדָ֛ם יְבַטֵּ֧א בִּשְׁבֻעָ֖ה וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וְהוּא־ יָדַ֥ע וְאָשֵׁ֖ם לְאַחַ֥ת מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃ ’ōw kî ne·p̄eš ṯiš·šā·ḇa‘ lə·ḇaṭ·ṭê ḇiś·p̄ā·ṯa·yim lə·hê·ṭîḇ ’ōw lə·hā·ra‘ lə·ḵōl ’ă·šer hā·’ā·ḏām yə·ḇaṭ·ṭê biš·ḇu·‘āh wə·ne‘·lam mim·men·nū wə·hū- yā·ḏa‘ wə·’ā·šêm lə·’a·ḥaṯ mê·’êl·lehWLC · 4

  • If someone incurs guilt in one of these ways, he must confess the sin he has committed…,

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄

וְהָיָ֥ה כִֽי־ יֶאְשַׁ֖ם לְאַחַ֣ת מֵאֵ֑לֶּה וְהִ֨תְוַדָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָ֖א עָלֶֽיהָ׃ wə·hā·yāh ḵî- ye’·šam lə·’a·ḥaṯ mê·’êl·leh wə·hiṯ·wad·dāh ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā ‘ā·le·hāWLC · 5

and he must bring his guilt offering to the LORD for the sin he has committed: a female lamb or goat… from the flock as a sin offering. And the priest will make atonement for him concerning his sin.

𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤍𐤒𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤅 𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅

וְהֵבִ֣יא אֶת־ אֲשָׁמ֣וֹ לַיהוָ֡ה עַ֣ל חַטָּאתוֹ֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר חָטָ֜א נְקֵבָ֨ה כִּשְׂבָּ֛ה אֽוֹ־ שְׂעִירַ֥ת עִזִּ֖ים מִן־ הַצֹּ֥אן לְחַטָּ֑את הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְכִפֶּ֥ר עָלָ֛יו מֵחַטָּאתֽוֹ׃ wə·hê·ḇî ’eṯ- ’ă·šā·mōw Yah·weh ‘al ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā nə·qê·ḇāh kiś·bāh ’ōw- śə·‘î·raṯ ‘iz·zîm min- haṣ·ṣōn lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ hak·kō·hên wə·ḵip·per ‘ā·lāw mê·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōwWLC · 6

If, however, he cannot afford… a lamb, he may bring to the LORD as restitution for his sin two turtledoves or two young pigeons— one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering.

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤂𐤉𐤏 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤃𐤉 𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤄

וְאִם־ לֹ֨א תַגִּ֣יע יָדוֹ֮ דֵּ֣י שֶׂה֒ וְהֵבִ֨יא אֶת־ לַֽיהוָ֑ה אֲשָׁמ֜וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֗א שְׁתֵּ֥י תֹרִ֛ים אֽוֹ־ שְׁנֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־ יוֹנָ֖ה אֶחָ֥ד לְחַטָּ֖את וְאֶחָ֥ד לְעֹלָֽה׃ wə·’im- lō ṯag·gīʿ yā·ḏōw dê śeh wə·hê·ḇî ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ă·šā·mōw ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā šə·tê ṯō·rîm ’ōw- šə·nê ḇə·nê- yō·w·nāh ’e·ḥāḏ lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ wə·’e·ḥāḏ lə·‘ō·lāhWLC · 7

He is to bring them to the priest, who shall first present the one for the sin offering. He is to twist its head at the front of its neck without severing it;

𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤋

וְהֵבִ֤יא אֹתָם֙ אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן רִאשׁוֹנָ֑ה וְהִקְרִ֛יב אֶת־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לַחַטָּ֖את וּמָלַ֧ק אֶת־ רֹאשׁ֛וֹ מִמּ֥וּל עָרְפּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֥א יַבְדִּֽיל׃ wə·hê·ḇî ’ō·ṯām ’el- hak·kō·hên ri·šō·w·nāh wə·hiq·rîḇ ’eṯ- ’ă·šer la·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ ū·mā·laq ’eṯ- rō·šōw mim·mūl ‘ā·rə·pōw wə·lō yaḇ·dîlWLC · 8

then he is to sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood is drained out at the base of the altar. It [is] a sin offering.

𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤓 𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

וְהִזָּ֞ה מִדַּ֤ם הַחַטָּאת֙ עַל־ קִ֣יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וְהַנִּשְׁאָ֣ר בַּדָּ֔ם יִמָּצֵ֖ה אֶל־ יְס֣וֹד הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ הֽוּא׃ חַטָּ֖את wə·hiz·zāh mid·dam ha·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ ‘al- qîr ham·miz·bê·aḥ wə·han·niš·’ār bad·dām yim·mā·ṣêh ’el- yə·sō·wḏ ham·miz·bê·aḥ hū ḥaṭ·ṭāṯWLC · 9

And [the priest] must prepare the second [bird] as a burnt offering according to the ordinance. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven

𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤅𐤍𐤎𐤋𐤇 𐤋𐤅𐤎

וְאֶת־ יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛י עֹלָ֖ה כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְכִפֶּ֨ר עָלָ֧יו מֵחַטָּאת֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ חָטָ֖א וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃ס wə·’eṯ- ya·‘ă·śeh haš·šê·nî ‘ō·lāh kam·miš·pāṭ hak·kō·hên wə·ḵip·per ‘ā·lāw mê·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw ’ă·šer- ḥā·ṭā wə·nis·laḥ lōwWLC · 10

But if he cannot afford… two turtledoves or two young pigeons, he may bring - - a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a sin offering. He must not put olive oil… or frankincense on it, because it [is] a sin offering.

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤂 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤐𐤄 𐤎𐤋𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

וְאִם־ לֹא֩ תַשִּׂ֨יג יָד֜וֹ לִשְׁתֵּ֣י תֹרִ֗ים אוֹ֮ לִשְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵי־ יוֹנָה֒ וְהֵבִ֨יא אֶת־ קָרְבָּנ֜וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֗א עֲשִׂירִ֧ת הָאֵפָ֛ה סֹ֖לֶת לְחַטָּ֑את לֹא־ יָשִׂ֨ים שֶׁ֗מֶן וְלֹא־ יִתֵּ֤ן עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ לְבֹנָ֔ה עָלֶ֜יהָ כִּ֥י הִֽיא׃ חַטָּ֖את wə·’im- lō ṯaś·śîḡ yā·ḏōw liš·tê ṯō·rîm ’ōw liš·nê ḇə·nê- yō·w·nāh wə·hê·ḇî ’eṯ- qā·rə·bā·nōw ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā ‘ă·śî·riṯ hā·’ê·p̄āh sō·leṯ lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ lō- yā·śîm še·men wə·lō- yit·tên ‘ā·le·hā lə·ḇō·nāh ‘ā·le·hā kî hî ḥaṭ·ṭāṯWLC · 11

He is to bring it to the priest, who shall take… a handful… from it as a memorial portion and burn [it] on the altar atop the food offerings to the LORD; it is a sin offering.

𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤒𐤌𐤑 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤒𐤌𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

וֶהֱבִיאָהּ֮ אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵן֒ וְקָמַ֣ץ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן׀ מְל֨וֹא קֻמְצ֜וֹ אֶת־ מִ֠מֶּנָּה אַזְכָּרָתָה֙ וְהִקְטִ֣יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה עַ֖ל אִשֵּׁ֣י יְהוָ֑ה הִֽוא׃ חַטָּ֖את we·hĕ·ḇî·’āh ’el- hak·kō·hên wə·qā·maṣ hak·kō·hên mə·lō·w qum·ṣōw ’eṯ- mim·men·nāh ’az·kā·rā·ṯāh wə·hiq·ṭîr ham·miz·bê·ḥāh ‘al ’iš·šê Yah·weh hî ḥaṭ·ṭāṯWLC · 12

In this way the priest will make atonement for him for any of these sins he has committed, and he will be forgiven The remainder will belong to the priest, like the grain offering.”

הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְכִפֶּר֩ עָלָ֨יו עַל־ מֵֽאַחַ֥ת מֵאֵ֖לֶּה חַטָּאת֧וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ חָטָ֛א וְנִסְלַ֣ח ל֑וֹ וְהָיְתָ֥ה לַכֹּהֵ֖ן כַּמִּנְחָֽה׃ס hak·kō·hên wə·ḵip·per ‘ā·lāw ‘al- mê·’a·ḥaṯ mê·’êl·leh ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw ’ă·šer- ḥā·ṭā wə·nis·laḥ lōw wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lak·kō·hên kam·min·ḥāhWLC · 13

Laws for Guilt Offerings

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 14

“If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against any of the LORD’s holy things, he must bring his guilt offering to the LORD: an unblemished ram from the flock, of proper value in silver shekels according to the sanctuary shekel; it is a guilt offering.

Regarding any holy thing he has harmed…, - he must make restitution by adding a fifth of its value to it and giving it to the priest, [who] will make atonement on his behalf with the ram as a guilt offering, and he will be forgiven

הַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ חָטָ֨א מִן־ וְאֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר֩ יְשַׁלֵּ֗ם וְאֶת־ יוֹסֵ֣ף חֲמִֽישִׁתוֹ֙ עָלָ֔יו וְנָתַ֥ן אֹת֖וֹ לַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְהַכֹּהֵ֗ן יְכַפֵּ֥ר עָלָ֛יו בְּאֵ֥יל הָאָשָׁ֖ם וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃פ haq·qō·ḏeš ḥā·ṭā min- wə·’êṯ ’ă·šer yə·šal·lêm wə·’eṯ- yō·w·sêp̄ ḥă·mî·ši·ṯōw ‘ā·lāw wə·nā·ṯan ’ō·ṯōw lak·kō·hên wə·hak·kō·hên yə·ḵap·pêr ‘ā·lāw bə·’êl hā·’ā·šām wə·nis·laḥ lōwWLC · 16

If someone… sins and violates any… of the LORD’s commandments even though he was… unaware, he is guilty and shall bear his punishment.

וְאִם־ נֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ כִּ֣י תֶֽחֱטָ֔א וְעָֽשְׂתָ֗ה אַחַת֙ מִכָּל־ יְהוָ֔ה מִצְוֺ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֣א וְלֹֽא־ תֵעָשֶׂ֑ינָה יָדַ֥ע וְאָשֵׁ֖ם וְנָשָׂ֥א עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ wə·’im- ne·p̄eš kî ṯe·ḥĕ·ṭā wə·‘ā·śə·ṯāh ’a·ḥaṯ mik·kāl Yah·weh miṣ·wōṯ ’ă·šer lō wə·lō- ṯê·‘ā·śe·nāh yā·ḏa‘ wə·’ā·šêm wə·nā·śā ‘ă·wō·nōwWLC · 17

He is to bring to the priest an unblemished ram of proper value from the flock as a guilt offering. Then the priest will make atonement on his behalf for the wrong he has committed… in ignorance…, and he will be forgiven

וְ֠הֵבִיא אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵ֑ן תָּמִ֧ים אַ֣יִל בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ מִן־ הַצֹּ֛אן לְאָשָׁ֖ם הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְכִפֶּר֩ עָלָ֨יו עַ֣ל שִׁגְגָת֧וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁגָ֛ג וְה֥וּא לֹֽא־ יָדַ֖ע וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃ wə·hê·ḇî ’el- hak·kō·hên tā·mîm ’a·yil bə·‘er·kə·ḵā min- haṣ·ṣōn lə·’ā·šām hak·kō·hên wə·ḵip·per ‘ā·lāw ‘al šiḡ·ḡā·ṯōw ’ă·šer- šā·ḡāḡ wə·hū lō- yā·ḏa‘ wə·nis·laḥ lōwWLC · 18

It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty… before the LORD.”
