Chapter 11

The Complaints of the People

1

Soon the people began to complain about their hardship in the hearing of the LORD, and when He heard [them], His anger was kindled, and fire from the LORD blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄

וַיְהִ֤י הָעָם֙ כְּמִתְאֹ֣נְנִ֔ים רַ֖ע בְּאָזְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָה֙ וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אַפּ֔וֹ וַיִּ֣חַר אֵ֣שׁ יְהוָ֔ה וַתִּבְעַר־ בָּם֙ וַתֹּ֖אכַל בִּקְצֵ֥ה הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ way·hî hā·‘ām kə·miṯ·’ō·nə·nîm ra‘ bə·’ā·zə·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yiš·ma‘ ’ap·pōw way·yi·ḥar ’êš Yah·weh wat·tiḇ·‘ar- bām wat·tō·ḵal biq·ṣêh ham·ma·ḥă·nehWLC · 1

And the people cried out to Moses, and he prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down.

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤒𐤏

הָעָ֖ם וַיִּצְעַ֥ק אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה הָאֵֽשׁ׃ וַתִּשְׁקַ֖ע hā·‘ām way·yiṣ·‘aq ’el- mō·šeh mō·šeh way·yiṯ·pal·lêl ’el- Yah·weh hā·’êš wat·tiš·qa‘WLC · 2

So that place was called… Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤕𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤌

הַה֖וּא הַמָּק֥וֹם וַיִּקְרָ֛א שֵֽׁם־ תַּבְעֵרָ֑ה כִּֽי־ אֵ֥שׁ יְהוָֽה׃ בָעֲרָ֥ה בָ֖ם ha·hū ham·mā·qō·wm way·yiq·rā šêm- taḇ·‘ê·rāh kî- ’êš Yah·weh ḇā·‘ă·rāh ḇāmWLC · 3

Meanwhile, the rabble among them had a strong craving for other food…, and again the Israelites… wept and said, “Who will feed us meat?

𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤄𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤅 𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤓

וְהָֽאסַפְסֻף֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ הִתְאַוּ֖וּ תַּאֲוָ֑ה גַּ֚ם וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּבְכּ֗וּ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מִ֥י יַאֲכִלֵ֖נוּ בָּשָֽׂר׃ wə·hā·sap̄·sup̄ ’ă·šer bə·qir·bōw hiṯ·’aw·wū ta·’ă·wāh gam way·yā·šu·ḇū bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yiḇ·kū way·yō·mə·rū mî ya·’ă·ḵi·lê·nū bā·śārWLC · 4

We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.

𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤂𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤑𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌

זָכַ֙רְנוּ֙ אֶת־ הַדָּגָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ נֹאכַ֥ל חִנָּ֑ם אֵ֣ת בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם הַקִּשֻּׁאִ֗ים וְאֵת֙ הָֽאֲבַטִּחִ֔ים וְאֶת־ הֶחָצִ֥יר וְאֶת־ הַבְּצָלִ֖ים וְאֶת־ הַשּׁוּמִֽים׃ zā·ḵar·nū ’eṯ- had·dā·ḡāh ’ă·šer- nō·ḵal ḥin·nām ’êṯ bə·miṣ·ra·yim haq·qiš·šu·’îm wə·’êṯ hā·’ă·ḇaṭ·ṭi·ḥîm wə·’eṯ- he·ḥā·ṣîr wə·’eṯ- hab·bə·ṣā·lîm wə·’eṯ- haš·šū·mîmWLC · 5

But now our appetite is gone; there is nothing… to see but… this manna!”

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤍

וְעַתָּ֛ה נַפְשֵׁ֥נוּ יְבֵשָׁ֖ה אֵ֣ין כֹּ֑ל עֵינֵֽינוּ׃ בִּלְתִּ֖י אֶל־ הַמָּ֥ן wə·‘at·tāh nap̄·šê·nū yə·ḇê·šāh ’ên kōl ‘ê·nê·nū bil·tî ’el- ham·mānWLC · 6

Now the manna resembled coriander… seed, and its appearance was like that of gum resin.

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤍 𐤂𐤃 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤋𐤇

וְהַמָּ֕ן גַּ֖ד ה֑וּא כִּזְרַע־ וְעֵינ֖וֹ כְּעֵ֥ין הַבְּדֹֽלַח׃ wə·ham·mān gaḏ hū kiz·ra‘- wə·‘ê·nōw kə·‘ên hab·bə·ḏō·laḥWLC · 7

The people walked around and gathered it, ground it on a handmill or crushed it in a mortar, then boiled it in a cooking pot or shaped it into cakes… It tasted… like pastry baked with fine oil.

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤈𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤈𐤅 𐤅𐤈𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤃𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤂𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤈𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤈𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤃 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤍

הָעָ֨ם שָׁטוּ֩ וְלָֽקְט֜וּ וְטָחֲנ֣וּ בָרֵחַ֗יִם א֤וֹ דָכוּ֙ בַּמְּדֹכָ֔ה וּבִשְּׁלוּ֙ בַּפָּר֔וּר וְעָשׂ֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ עֻג֑וֹת וְהָיָ֣ה טַעְמ֔וֹ כְּטַ֖עַם לְשַׁ֥ד הַשָּֽׁמֶן׃ hā·‘ām šā·ṭū wə·lā·qə·ṭū wə·ṭā·ḥă·nū ḇā·rê·ḥa·yim ’ōw ḏā·ḵū bam·mə·ḏō·ḵāh ū·ḇiš·šə·lū bap·pā·rūr wə·‘ā·śū ’ō·ṯōw ‘u·ḡō·wṯ wə·hā·yāh ṭa‘·mōw kə·ṭa·‘am lə·šaḏ haš·šā·menWLC · 8

When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it.

The Complaint of Moses

Then Moses heard the people of family after family weeping at the entrances to their tents, and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly, and Moses was also displeased…

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤏

מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁמַ֨ע הָעָ֗ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔יו אִ֖ישׁ בֹּכֶה֙ לְפֶ֣תַח אָהֳל֑וֹ אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ וַיִּֽחַר־ מְאֹ֔ד מֹשֶׁ֖ה וּבְעֵינֵ֥י רָֽע׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yiš·ma‘ hā·‘ām lə·miš·pə·ḥō·ṯāw ’îš bō·ḵeh lə·p̄e·ṯaḥ ’ā·ho·lōw ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- mə·’ōḏ mō·šeh ū·ḇə·‘ê·nê rā‘WLC · 10

So Moses… asked the LORD, “Why have You brought this trouble on Your servant? Why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid upon me the burden of all these people?

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌

מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶל־ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה לָמָ֤ה הֲרֵעֹ֙תָ֙ לְעַבְדֶּ֔ךָ וְלָ֛מָּה לֹא־ מָצָ֥תִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ לָשׂ֗וּם אֶת־ עָלָֽי׃ מַשָּׂ֛א כָּל־ הַזֶּ֖ה הָעָ֥ם mō·šeh ’el- way·yō·mer Yah·weh lā·māh hă·rê·‘ō·ṯā lə·‘aḇ·de·ḵā wə·lām·māh lō- mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā lā·śūm ’eṯ- ‘ā·lāy maś·śā kāl- haz·zeh hā·‘āmWLC · 11

Did I conceive all these… people? Did I give them birth, so that You should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries an infant,’ to the land that You swore to give their fathers?

הֶאָנֹכִ֣י הָרִ֗יתִי אֵ֚ת כָּל־ הַזֶּ֔ה אִם־ הָעָ֣ם אָנֹכִ֖י יְלִדְתִּ֑יהוּ כִּֽי־ תֹאמַ֨ר אֵלַ֜י שָׂאֵ֣הוּ בְחֵיקֶ֗ךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הָאֹמֵן֙ יִשָּׂ֤א אֶת־ הַיֹּנֵ֔ק עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתָּ לַאֲבֹתָֽיו׃ he·’ā·nō·ḵî hā·rî·ṯî ’êṯ kāl- haz·zeh ’im- hā·‘ām ’ā·nō·ḵî yə·liḏ·tî·hū kî- ṯō·mar ’ê·lay śā·’ê·hū ḇə·ḥê·qe·ḵā ka·’ă·šer hā·’ō·mên yiś·śā ’eṯ- hay·yō·nêq ‘al hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer niš·ba‘·tā la·’ă·ḇō·ṯāwWLC · 12

Where can I get meat for all these people? For they keep crying out to me…, ‘Give us meat to eat!’

מֵאַ֤יִן לִי֙ בָּשָׂ֔ר לָתֵ֖ת לְכָל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם כִּֽי־ יִבְכּ֤וּ עָלַי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר תְּנָה־ לָּ֥נוּ בָשָׂ֖ר וְנֹאכֵֽלָה׃ mê·’a·yin lî bā·śār lā·ṯêṯ lə·ḵāl haz·zeh hā·‘ām kî- yiḇ·kū ‘ā·lay lê·mōr tə·nāh- lā·nū ḇā·śār wə·nō·ḵê·lāhWLC · 13

I cannot… carry all these people by myself; [it is] too burdensome for me.

אָנֹכִי֙ לֹֽא־ אוּכַ֤ל לָשֵׂ֖את אֶת־ כָּל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם לְבַדִּ֔י כִּ֥י כָבֵ֖ד מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî lō- ’ū·ḵal lā·śêṯ ’eṯ- kāl- haz·zeh hā·‘ām lə·ḇad·dî kî ḵā·ḇêḏ mim·men·nîWLC · 14

If this is how You are going to treat me, please kill me right now if I have found favor in Your eyes— and let me not see my own wretchedness.”

וְאִם־ כָּ֣כָה׀ אַתְּ־ עֹ֣שֶׂה לִּ֗י נָא֙ הָרֹ֔ג הָרְגֵ֤נִי אִם־ מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְאַל־ אֶרְאֶ֖ה בְּרָעָתִֽי׃פ wə·’im- kā·ḵāh ’at- ‘ō·śeh lî nā hā·rōḡ hā·rə·ḡê·nî ’im- mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā wə·’al- ’er·’eh bə·rā·‘ā·ṯîWLC · 15

Seventy Elders Anointed

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Bring Me seventy vvv of the elders of Israel known to you… as leaders and officers of the people. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting and have them stand there with you.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤊

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֶסְפָה־ לִּ֞י שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִישׁ֮ מִזִּקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָדַ֔עְתָּ כִּי־ הֵ֛ם זִקְנֵ֥י וְשֹׁטְרָ֑יו הָעָ֖ם וְלָקַחְתָּ֤ אֹתָם֙ אֶל־ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְהִֽתְיַצְּב֥וּ שָׁ֖ם עִמָּֽךְ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh ’es·p̄āh- lî šiḇ·‘îm ’îš miz·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- hêm ziq·nê wə·šō·ṭə·rāw hā·‘ām wə·lā·qaḥ·tā ’ō·ṯām ’el- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·hiṯ·yaṣ·ṣə·ḇū šām ‘im·māḵWLC · 16

And I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that [is] on you and put [that Spirit] on them. They will help you bear… the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.

𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤊

וְיָרַדְתִּ֗י וְדִבַּרְתִּ֣י עִמְּךָ֮ שָׁם֒ וְאָצַלְתִּ֗י מִן־ הָר֛וּחַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָלֶ֖יךָ וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְנָשְׂא֤וּ אִתְּךָ֙ בְּמַשָּׂ֣א הָעָ֔ם אַתָּ֖ה וְלֹא־ תִשָּׂ֥א לְבַדֶּֽךָ׃ wə·yā·raḏ·tî wə·ḏib·bar·tî ‘im·mə·ḵā šām wə·’ā·ṣal·tî min- hā·rū·aḥ ’ă·šer ‘ā·le·ḵā wə·śam·tî ‘ă·lê·hem wə·nā·śə·’ū ’it·tə·ḵā bə·maś·śā hā·‘ām ’at·tāh wə·lō- ṯiś·śā lə·ḇad·de·ḵāWLC · 17

And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, because you have cried out in the hearing of the LORD, saying: ‘Who will feed us meat? For we were better off in Egypt!’ Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat.

You will eat it… not for one or two days, nor for five - or ten - or twenty days,

but for a whole month…— until it comes out of your nostrils and makes you nauseous— because… you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have cried out before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’”

But Moses replied, “Here I am among 600,000 {}… men on foot, yet You say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month…’

If [all our] flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough Or if all the fish in the sea were caught for them, would they have enough

The LORD… answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not My word will come to pass.”

So Moses went out and relayed to the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered seventy… of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent.

Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on [Moses] and placed that Spirit on the seventy… elders… As the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied— but they never did so again.

Two men, however, had remained in the camp— one named Eldad… and the other Medad— and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp.

A young man ran and reported to Moses,… “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”

But Moses replied “Are you jealous on my account? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!”

Then Moses returned to the camp,… along with the elders of Israel.

The Quail and the Plague

Now a wind sent by the LORD came up, drove in quail from the sea, and brought them near the camp, about two cubits above the surface of the ground, for a day’s journey in every direction… around the camp.

All that day and night…, and all the next day, the people stayed up gathering the quail. No one gathered less than ten homers, and they spread them out all around the camp.

But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and the LORD struck them with a severe plague.

עוֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ הַבָּשָׂ֗ר בֵּ֣ין שִׁנֵּיהֶ֔ם טֶ֖רֶם יִכָּרֵ֑ת וְאַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ חָרָ֣ה בָעָ֔ם יְהוָה֙ וַיַּ֤ךְ בָּעָ֔ם רַבָּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃ מַכָּ֖ה ‘ō·w·ḏen·nū hab·bā·śār bên šin·nê·hem ṭe·rem yik·kā·rêṯ wə·’ap̄ Yah·weh ḥā·rāh ḇā·‘ām Yah·weh way·yaḵ bā·‘ām rab·bāh mə·’ōḏ mak·kāhWLC · 33

So they called - that place vvv Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved other food.
