Chapter 12
The Complaint of Miriam and Aaron
1
Then Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because of… the Cushite woman he had married, for he had taken a Cushite wife.
𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤄
מִרְיָ֤ם וְאַהֲרֹן֙ וַתְּדַבֵּ֨ר בְּמֹשֶׁ֔ה עַל־ אֹד֛וֹת הַכֻּשִׁ֖ית אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָאִשָּׁ֥ה לָקָ֑ח כִּֽי־ לָקָֽח׃ כֻשִׁ֖ית אִשָּׁ֥ה mir·yām wə·’a·hă·rōn wat·tə·ḏab·bêr bə·mō·šeh ‘al- ’ō·ḏō·wṯ hak·ku·šîṯ ’ă·šer hā·’iš·šāh lā·qāḥ kî- lā·qāḥ ḵu·šîṯ ’iš·šāh — WLC · 1

“Does the LORD speak only… through Moses?” they said. “Does He not also speak through us?” And the LORD heard this.

יְהוָ֔ה דִּבֶּ֣ר הֲרַ֤ק אַךְ־ בְּמֹשֶׁה֙ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ הֲלֹ֖א גַּם־ דִבֵּ֑ר בָּ֣נוּ יְהוָֽה׃ וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע Yah·weh dib·ber hă·raq ’aḵ- bə·mō·šeh way·yō·mə·rū hă·lō gam- ḏib·bêr bā·nū Yah·weh way·yiš·ma‘ — WLC · 2

Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth.

מֹשֶׁ֖ה מְאֹ֑ד עָנָו וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מִכֹּל֙ הָֽאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ס mō·šeh mə·’ōḏ ʿå̄·nå̄w wə·hā·’îš mik·kōl hā·’ā·ḏām ’ă·šer ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 3

And suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron,… and Miriam, “You three, come out to the Tent of Meeting.” So the three went out,

פִּתְאֹ֗ם יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶל־ מִרְיָ֔ם שְׁלָשְׁתְּכֶ֖ם צְא֥וּ אֶל־ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד שְׁלָשְׁתָּֽם׃ וַיֵּצְא֖וּ piṯ·’ōm Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn wə·’el- mir·yām šə·lā·šə·tə·ḵem ṣə·’ū ’el- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ šə·lā·šə·tām way·yê·ṣə·’ū — WLC · 4

and the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud, stood at the entrance to the Tent, and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When both of them had stepped forward,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅
יְהוָה֙ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בְּעַמּ֣וּד עָנָ֔ן וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וַיִּקְרָא֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּמִרְיָ֔ם שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ וַיֵּצְא֖וּ Yah·weh way·yê·reḏ bə·‘am·mūḏ ‘ā·nān way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ pe·ṯaḥ hā·’ō·hel way·yiq·rā ’a·hă·rōn ū·mir·yām šə·nê·hem way·yê·ṣə·’ū — WLC · 5

He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet [among you], [I], the LORD, will reveal Myself to him in a vision; I will speak to him in a dream.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤌
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׁמְעוּ־ נָ֣א דְבָרָ֑י אִם־ יִֽהְיֶה֙ נְבִ֣יאֲכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֗ה אֶתְוַדָּ֔ע אֵלָ֣יו בַּמַּרְאָה֙ אֲדַבֶּר־ בּֽוֹ׃ בַּחֲל֖וֹם way·yō·mer šim·‘ū- nā ḏə·ḇā·rāy ’im- yih·yeh nə·ḇî·’ă·ḵem Yah·weh ’eṯ·wad·dā‘ ’ê·lāw bam·mar·’āh ’ă·ḏab·ber- bōw ba·ḥă·lō·wm — WLC · 6

[But this is] not so with My servant Moses; he is faithful in all My house.
𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉
לֹא־ כֵ֖ן עַבְדִּ֣י מֹשֶׁ֑ה הֽוּא׃ נֶאֱמָ֥ן בְּכָל־ בֵּיתִ֖י lō- ḵên ‘aḇ·dî mō·šeh hū ne·’ĕ·mān bə·ḵāl bê·ṯî — WLC · 7

I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then vvv were you unafraid to speak against My servant Moses?”
𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤅 𐤐𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤈 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤄
אֲדַבֶּר־ בּ֗וֹ פֶּ֣ה אֶל־ פֶּ֞ה וּמַרְאֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א בְחִידֹ֔ת יַבִּ֑יט וּתְמֻנַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה וּמַדּ֙וּעַ֙ לֹ֣א יְרֵאתֶ֔ם לְדַבֵּ֖ר בְּעַבְדִּ֥י בְמֹשֶֽׁה׃ ’ă·ḏab·ber- bōw peh ’el- peh ū·mar·’eh wə·lō ḇə·ḥî·ḏōṯ yab·bîṭ ū·ṯə·mu·naṯ Yah·weh ū·mad·dū·a‘ lō yə·rê·ṯem lə·ḏab·bêr bə·‘aḇ·dî ḇə·mō·šeh — WLC · 8

So the anger of the LORD burned against them, and He departed.

אַ֧ף יְהוָ֛ה וַיִּֽחַר בָּ֖ם וַיֵּלַֽךְ׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar bām way·yê·laḵ — WLC · 9

As the cloud lifted from above the Tent, suddenly Miriam [became] leprous, [white] as snow. Aaron turned toward her, saw that she [was] leprous,
𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤂 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤏𐤕
וְהֶעָנָ֗ן סָ֚ר מֵעַ֣ל הָאֹ֔הֶל וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִרְיָ֖ם מְצֹרַ֣עַת כַּשָּׁ֑לֶג אַהֲרֹ֛ן וַיִּ֧פֶן אֶל־ מִרְיָ֖ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מְצֹרָֽעַת׃ wə·he·‘ā·nān sār mê·‘al hā·’ō·hel wə·hin·nêh mir·yām mə·ṣō·ra·‘aṯ kaš·šā·leḡ ’a·hă·rōn way·yi·p̄en ’el- mir·yām wə·hin·nêh mə·ṣō·rā·‘aṯ — WLC · 10

and said… to Moses,… “My lord, please do not hold against us this sin we have so foolishly committed.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤍𐤅
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י נָ֨א אַל־ תָשֵׁ֤ת עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ חַטָּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נוֹאַ֖לְנוּ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָֽאנוּ׃ way·yō·mer ’a·hă·rōn ’el- mō·šeh bî ’ă·ḏō·nî nā ’al- ṯā·šêṯ ‘ā·lê·nū ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ ’ă·šer nō·w·’al·nū wa·’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā·nū — WLC · 11

Please do not let her be like a stillborn infant whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”
𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤅 𐤇𐤑𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤌
נָ֥א אַל־ תְהִ֖י כַּמֵּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְשָׂרֽוֹ׃ חֲצִ֥י וַיֵּאָכֵ֖ל בְּצֵאתוֹ֙ אִמּ֔וֹ מֵרֶ֣חֶם nā ’al- ṯə·hî kam·mêṯ ’ă·šer ḇə·śā·rōw ḥă·ṣî way·yê·’ā·ḵêl bə·ṣê·ṯōw ’im·mōw mê·re·ḥem — WLC · 12

So Moses cried out to the LORD,… “O God, please heal her!”
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤓𐤐𐤀 𐤍𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤐
מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּצְעַ֣ק אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֕ל נָ֛א רְפָ֥א נָ֖א לָֽהּ׃פ mō·šeh way·yiṣ·‘aq ’el- Yah·weh lê·mōr ’êl nā rə·p̄ā nā lāh — WLC · 13

But the LORD… answered Moses, “If her father had but spit… in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp for seven days; after that she may be brought back in.”
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤒 𐤉𐤓𐤒 𐤁𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤕𐤀𐤎𐤐
יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה וְאָבִ֙יהָ֙ יָרֹ֤ק יָרַק֙ בְּפָנֶ֔יהָ הֲלֹ֥א תִכָּלֵ֖ם שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים תִּסָּגֵ֞ר מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ וְאַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵֽף׃ Yah·weh ’el- way·yō·mer mō·šeh wə·’ā·ḇî·hā yā·rōq yā·raq bə·p̄ā·ne·hā hă·lō ṯik·kā·lêm šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm tis·sā·ḡêr mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wə·’a·ḥar tê·’ā·sêp̄ — WLC · 14

So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until [she] was brought in again.

מִרְיָ֛ם וַתִּסָּגֵ֥ר מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וְהָעָם֙ לֹ֣א נָסַ֔ע עַד־ מִרְיָֽם׃ הֵאָסֵ֖ף mir·yām wat·tis·sā·ḡêr mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wə·hā·‘ām lō nā·sa‘ ‘aḏ- mir·yām hê·’ā·sêp̄ — WLC · 15

After that, the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the Wilderness of Paran.

וְאַחַ֛ר הָעָ֖ם נָסְע֥וּ מֵחֲצֵר֑וֹת וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר פָּארָֽן׃פ wə·’a·ḥar hā·‘ām nā·sə·‘ū mê·ḥă·ṣê·rō·wṯ way·ya·ḥă·nū bə·miḏ·bar pā·rān — WLC · 16
