Korah’s Rebellion

Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath son of Levi, vvv along with some Reubenites— Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth— conducted

a rebellion against Moses, along with 250… men… vvv of Israel renowned as leaders of the congregation and representatives in the assembly.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃

וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וּמָאתָ֑יִם אַנְשֵׁי־ וַאֲנָשִׁ֥ים מִבְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שֵֽׁם׃ נְשִׂיאֵ֥י עֵדָ֛ה קְרִאֵ֥י מוֹעֵ֖ד way·yā·qu·mū lip̄·nê mō·šeh ḥă·miš·šîm ū·mā·ṯā·yim ’an·šê- wa·’ă·nā·šîm mib·bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl šêm nə·śî·’ê ‘ê·ḏāh qə·ri·’ê mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 2

They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them,… “[You have taken] too much upon yourselves! For everyone in the entire congregation is holy, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤕𐤕𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיִּֽקָּהֲל֞וּ עַל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵהֶם֮ רַב־ לָכֶם֒ כִּ֤י כָל־ כֻּלָּ֣ם הָֽעֵדָה֙ קְדֹשִׁ֔ים יְהוָ֑ה וּבְתוֹכָ֖ם וּמַדּ֥וּעַ תִּֽתְנַשְּׂא֖וּ עַל־ קְהַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ way·yiq·qā·hă·lū ‘al- mō·šeh wə·‘al- ’a·hă·rōn way·yō·mə·rū ’ă·lê·hem raḇ- lā·ḵem kî ḵāl kul·lām hā·‘ê·ḏāh qə·ḏō·šîm Yah·weh ū·ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵām ū·mad·dū·a‘ tiṯ·naś·śə·’ū ‘al- qə·hal Yah·wehWLC · 3

When Moses heard this, he fell facedown…

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע וַיִּפֹּ֖ל עַל־ פָּנָֽיו׃ mō·šeh way·yiš·ma‘ way·yip·pōl ‘al- pā·nāwWLC · 4

Then he said to Korah… and all his followers,… “Tomorrow morning the LORD will reveal who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will bring that person near to Himself. The one He chooses He will bring near to Himself.

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־ קֹ֜רַח וְאֶֽל־ כָּל־ עֲדָתוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ בֹּ֠קֶר יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־ וְיֹדַ֨ע אֲשֶׁר־ ל֛וֹ וְאֶת־ הַקָּד֖וֹשׁ וְהִקְרִ֣יב אֵלָ֑יו וְאֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַר־ בּ֖וֹ יַקְרִ֥יב אֵלָֽיו׃ way·ḏab·bêr ’el- qō·raḥ wə·’el- kāl- ‘ă·ḏā·ṯōw lê·mōr bō·qer Yah·weh ’eṯ- wə·yō·ḏa‘ ’ă·šer- lōw wə·’eṯ- haq·qā·ḏō·wōš wə·hiq·rîḇ ’ê·lāw wə·’êṯ ’ă·šer yiḇ·ḥar- bōw yaq·rîḇ ’ê·lāwWLC · 5

[You,] Korah, and all your followers are to do as follows: Take censers,

𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤅𐤕

קֹ֖רַח וְכָל־ עֲדָתֽוֹ׃ עֲשׂ֑וּ זֹ֖את קְחוּ־ לָכֶ֣ם מַחְתּ֔וֹת qō·raḥ wə·ḵāl ‘ă·ḏā·ṯōw ‘ă·śū zōṯ qə·ḥū- lā·ḵem maḥ·tō·wṯWLC · 6

and tomorrow you are to place fire and incense in them in the presence of the LORD. Then the man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. It is you sons of Levi who have taken too much upon yourselves!”

𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔 𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤊𐤌

מָחָ֔ר וּתְנ֣וּ אֵ֡שׁ קְטֹ֜רֶת עֲלֵיהֶ֨ן בָהֵ֣ן׀ וְשִׂימוּ֩ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה יִבְחַ֥ר וְהָיָ֗ה ה֣וּא הַקָּד֑וֹשׁ בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃ רַב־ לָכֶ֖ם mā·ḥār ū·ṯə·nū ’êš qə·ṭō·reṯ ‘ă·lê·hen ḇā·hên wə·śî·mū lip̄·nê Yah·weh hā·’îš ’ă·šer- Yah·weh yiḇ·ḥar wə·hā·yāh hū haq·qā·ḏō·wōš bə·nê lê·wî raḇ- lā·ḵemWLC · 7

Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you sons of Levi!

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤍𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤉

מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ קֹ֑רַח נָ֖א שִׁמְעוּ־ בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- qō·raḥ nā šim·‘ū- bə·nê lê·wîWLC · 8

Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel and brought you near to Himself to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤕𐤌

הַמְעַ֣ט מִכֶּ֗ם כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶתְכֶם֙ הִבְדִּיל֩ מֵעֲדַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהַקְרִ֥יב אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָ֑יו לַעֲבֹ֗ד אֶת־ עֲבֹדַת֙ יְהוָ֔ה מִשְׁכַּ֣ן וְלַעֲמֹ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה לְשָׁרְתָֽם׃ ham·‘aṭ mik·kem kî- ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ·ḵem hiḇ·dîl mê·‘ă·ḏaṯ yiś·rā·’êl lə·haq·rîḇ ’eṯ·ḵem ’ê·lāw la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇō·ḏaṯ Yah·weh miš·kan wə·la·‘ă·mōḏ lip̄·nê hā·‘ê·ḏāh lə·šā·rə·ṯāmWLC · 9

He has brought you near, - [you] and all your fellow Levites…, but you are seeking the priesthood as well.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤂𐤌

וַיַּקְרֵב֙ אֹֽתְךָ֔ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אַחֶ֥יךָ אִתָּ֑ךְ בְנֵי־ לֵוִ֖י וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּ֖ם כְּהֻנָּֽה׃ גַּם־ way·yaq·rêḇ ’ō·ṯə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’a·ḥe·ḵā ’it·tāḵ ḇə·nê- lê·wî ū·ḇiq·qaš·tem kə·hun·nāh gam-WLC · 10

Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he that you should grumble against him?”

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤊 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤋𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

לָכֵ֗ן אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־ עֲדָ֣תְךָ֔ הַנֹּעָדִ֖ים עַל־ יְהוָ֑ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן מַה־ ה֔וּא כִּ֥י תִלּוֹנוּ עָלָֽיו׃ lā·ḵên ’at·tāh wə·ḵāl ‘ă·ḏā·ṯə·ḵā han·nō·‘ā·ḏîm ‘al- Yah·weh wə·’a·hă·rōn mah- hū kî ṯil·lō·nū ‘ā·lāwWLC · 11

Then Moses summoned… Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come!

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤋𐤄

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח לִקְרֹ֛א לְדָתָ֥ן וְלַאֲבִירָ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י אֱלִיאָ֑ב וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֹ֥א נַעֲלֶֽה׃ mō·šeh way·yiš·laḥ liq·rō lə·ḏā·ṯān wə·la·’ă·ḇî·rām bə·nê ’ĕ·lî·’āḇ way·yō·mə·rū lō na·‘ă·lehWLC · 12

Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?… Must you also appoint yourself as ruler… over us?

𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤂𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤓𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤓𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅

הַמְעַ֗ט כִּ֤י הֶֽעֱלִיתָ֙נוּ֙ מֵאֶ֨רֶץ זָבַ֤ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ לַהֲמִיתֵ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר כִּֽי־ גַּם־ תִשְׂתָּרֵ֥ר הִשְׂתָּרֵֽר׃ עָלֵ֖ינוּ ham·‘aṭ kî he·‘ĕ·lî·ṯā·nū mê·’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇaš la·hă·mî·ṯê·nū bam·miḏ·bār kî- gam- ṯiś·tā·rêr hiś·tā·rêr ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 13

Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!”

𐤀𐤐 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕 𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤕𐤍𐤒𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤋𐤄

אַ֡ף לֹ֣א הֲבִ֣יאֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל־ אֶרֶץ֩ זָבַ֨ת חָלָ֤ב וּדְבַשׁ֙ וַתִּ֨תֶּן־ לָ֔נוּ נַחֲלַ֖ת שָׂדֶ֣ה וָכָ֑רֶם תְּנַקֵּ֖ר הַעֵינֵ֞י הָהֵ֛ם הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים לֹ֥א נַעֲלֶֽה׃ ’ap̄ lō hă·ḇî·’ō·ṯā·nū ’el- ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇaš wat·tit·ten- lā·nū na·ḥă·laṯ śā·ḏeh wā·ḵā·rem tə·naq·qêr ha·‘ê·nê hā·hêm hā·’ă·nā·šîm lō na·‘ă·lehWLC · 14

Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard… their offering. I have not taken… one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.”

𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤄𐤌

לְמֹשֶׁה֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּ֤חַר וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה אַל־ תֵּ֖פֶן אֶל־ מִנְחָתָ֑ם לֹ֠א נָשָׂ֔אתִי וְלֹ֥א אֶחָ֤ד חֲמ֨וֹר מֵהֶם֙ הֲרֵעֹ֖תִי אֶת־ אַחַ֥ד מֵהֶֽם׃ lə·mō·šeh mə·’ōḏ way·yi·ḥar way·yō·mer ’el- Yah·weh ’al- tê·p̄en ’el- min·ḥā·ṯām lō nā·śā·ṯî wə·lō ’e·ḥāḏ ḥă·mō·wr mê·hem hă·rê·‘ō·ṯî ’eṯ- ’a·ḥaḏ mê·hemWLC · 15

And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow— you and they and Aaron.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍

מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ קֹ֔רַח אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־ עֲדָ֣תְךָ֔ הֱי֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה מָחָֽר׃ אַתָּ֥ה וָהֵ֛ם וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- qō·raḥ ’at·tāh wə·ḵāl ‘ă·ḏā·ṯə·ḵā hĕ·yū lip̄·nê Yah·weh mā·ḥār ’at·tāh wā·hêm wə·’a·hă·rōnWLC · 16

Each man is to take his censer, place incense in it, and present [it] before the LORD— 250… censers. You and Aaron… are to present your censers as well.”

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤌 𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤕𐤅

אִ֣ישׁ וּקְח֣וּ׀ מַחְתָּת֗וֹ וּנְתַתֶּ֤ם קְטֹ֔רֶת עֲלֵיהֶם֙ וְהִקְרַבְתֶּ֞ם אִ֣ישׁ מַחְתָּת֔וֹ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וּמָאתַ֖יִם מַחְתֹּ֑ת וְאַתָּ֥ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן אִ֥ישׁ מַחְתָּתֽוֹ׃ ’îš ū·qə·ḥū maḥ·tā·ṯōw ū·nə·ṯat·tem qə·ṭō·reṯ ‘ă·lê·hem wə·hiq·raḇ·tem ’îš maḥ·tā·ṯōw lip̄·nê Yah·weh ḥă·miš·šîm ū·mā·ṯa·yim maḥ·tōṯ wə·’at·tāh wə·’a·hă·rōn ’îš maḥ·tā·ṯōwWLC · 17

So each man took his censer, put fire - and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

When Korah had gathered his whole assembly against them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole congregation.

And the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron…,

“Separate yourselves from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.”

But Moses and Aaron fell facedown… and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, when one man sins, will You be angry with the whole congregation?”

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 23

“Tell… the congregation… to move away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

So Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיָּ֣קָם וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ דָּתָ֣ן וַאֲבִירָ֑ם זִקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ אַחֲרָ֖יו mō·šeh way·yā·qām way·yê·leḵ ’el- dā·ṯān wa·’ă·ḇî·rām ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rāwWLC · 25

And he warned… the congregation,… “Move away now from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”

So they moved away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram had come out and stood at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children and infants.

The Earth Swallows Korah

Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things, for it was not my own doing:

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤉

מֹשֶׁה֒ וַיֹּאמֶר֮ בְּזֹאת֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּן כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֣ה שְׁלָחַ֔נִי לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֖ים כִּי־ לֹ֖א מִלִּבִּֽי׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer bə·zōṯ tê·ḏə·‘ūn kî- Yah·weh šə·lā·ḥa·nî la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’êṯ kāl- hā·’êl·leh ham·ma·‘ă·śîm kî- lō mil·lib·bîWLC · 28

If these men die a natural death -, or if they suffer… the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.

אִם־ אֵ֔לֶּה יְמֻת֣וּן כְּמ֤וֹת כָּל־ הָֽאָדָם֙ יִפָּקֵ֖ד עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וּפְקֻדַּת֙ כָּל־ הָ֣אָדָ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א שְׁלָחָֽנִי׃ ’im- ’êl·leh yə·mu·ṯūn kə·mō·wṯ kāl- hā·’ā·ḏām yip·pā·qêḏ ‘ă·lê·hem ū·p̄ə·qud·daṯ kāl- hā·’ā·ḏām Yah·weh lō šə·lā·ḥā·nîWLC · 29

But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD {with contempt}.”

וְאִם־ יְהוָ֗ה יִבְרָ֣א בְּרִיאָ֞ה הָאֲדָמָ֤ה אֶת־ וּפָצְתָ֨ה פִּ֙יהָ֙ וּבָלְעָ֤ה אֹתָם֙ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֔ם וְיָרְד֥וּ חַיִּ֖ים שְׁאֹ֑לָה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֧י הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶת־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים נִֽאֲצ֛וּ יְהוָֽה׃ wə·’im- Yah·weh yiḇ·rā bə·rî·’āh hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’eṯ- ū·p̄ā·ṣə·ṯāh pî·hā ū·ḇā·lə·‘āh ’ō·ṯām wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer lā·hem wə·yā·rə·ḏū ḥay·yîm šə·’ō·lāh wî·ḏa‘·tem kî hā·’êl·leh ’eṯ- hā·’ă·nā·šîm ni·’ă·ṣū Yah·wehWLC · 30

  • As soon as [Moses] had finished saying all this…, the ground beneath them split open,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤒𐤏

וַיְהִי֙ כְּכַלֹּת֔וֹ לְדַבֵּ֕ר אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם׃ וַתִּבָּקַ֥ע way·hî kə·ḵal·lō·ṯōw lə·ḏab·bêr ’êṯ kāl- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer taḥ·tê·hem wat·tib·bā·qa‘WLC · 31

and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households— all Korah’s men and all their possessions.

הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֶת־ וַתִּפְתַּ֤ח פִּ֔יהָ וַתִּבְלַ֥ע אֹתָ֖ם וְאֶת־ בָּתֵּיהֶ֑ם וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־ לְקֹ֔רַח וְאֵ֖ת הָאָדָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּל־ הָרֲכֽוּשׁ׃ hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- wat·tip̄·taḥ pî·hā wat·tiḇ·la‘ ’ō·ṯām wə·’eṯ- bāt·tê·hem wə·’êṯ kāl- lə·qō·raḥ wə·’êṯ hā·’ā·ḏām ’ă·šer kāl- hā·ră·ḵūšWLC · 32

They went down alive into Sheol with all they owned The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly.

At their cries, all the people of Israel who [were] around them fled, saying, “The earth may swallow us too!”

And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the 250… men who were offering the incense.

The Censers Reserved for Holy Use

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 36

“Tell… Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the censers from the flames and to scatter the coals far away, because [the censers] are holy.

  • As for the censers of those who sinned at the cost of their own lives, vvv vvv hammer them into sheets to overlay the altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the Israelites…”

אֵ֡ת מַחְתּוֹת֩ הָאֵ֜לֶּה הַֽחַטָּאִ֨ים בְּנַפְשֹׁתָ֗ם וְעָשׂ֨וּ אֹתָ֜ם רִקֻּעֵ֤י פַחִים֙ צִפּ֣וּי לַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ כִּֽי־ הִקְרִיבֻ֥ם לִפְנֵֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּקְדָּ֑שׁוּ וְיִֽהְי֥וּ לְא֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’êṯ maḥ·tō·wṯ hā·’êl·leh ha·ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm bə·nap̄·šō·ṯām wə·‘ā·śū ’ō·ṯām riq·qu·‘ê p̄a·ḥîm ṣip·pui lam·miz·bê·aḥ kî- hiq·rî·ḇum lip̄·nê- Yah·weh way·yiq·dā·šū wə·yih·yū lə·’ō·wṯ liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 38

So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar,

אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֗ן אֵ֚ת וַיִּקַּ֞ח הַנְּחֹ֔שֶׁת מַחְתּ֣וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִקְרִ֖יבוּ הַשְּׂרֻפִ֑ים וַֽיְרַקְּע֖וּם צִפּ֥וּי לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ ’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên ’êṯ way·yiq·qaḥ han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ maḥ·tō·wṯ ’ă·šer hiq·rî·ḇū haś·śə·ru·p̄îm way·raq·qə·‘ūm ṣip·pui lam·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 39

just as the LORD… commanded him through Moses This was to be a reminder to the Israelites… that no outsider… who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like Korah and his followers -.

Murmuring and Plague

The next day the whole congregation… of Israel grumbled against Moses… and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the LORD’s people!”

𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤌

מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת כָּל־ עֲדַ֤ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיִּלֹּ֜נוּ עַל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְעַֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר אַתֶּ֥ם הֲמִתֶּ֖ם אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ עַ֥ם mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yil·lō·nū ‘al- mō·šeh wə·‘al- ’a·hă·rōn lê·mōr ’at·tem hă·mit·tem ’eṯ- Yah·weh ‘amWLC · 41

But when the congregation gathered against them, Moses… and Aaron turned toward the Tent of Meeting,… and suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤊𐤎𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀

וַיְהִ֗י הָֽעֵדָה֙ בְּהִקָּהֵ֤ל עַל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיִּפְנוּ֙ אֶל־ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְהִנֵּ֥ה הֶעָנָ֑ן כִסָּ֖הוּ כְּב֥וֹד יְהוָֽה׃ וַיֵּרָ֖א way·hî hā·‘ê·ḏāh bə·hiq·qā·hêl ‘al- mō·šeh wə·‘al- ’a·hă·rōn way·yip̄·nū ’el- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·hin·nêh he·‘ā·nān ḵis·sā·hū kə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh way·yê·rāWLC · 42

Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting,

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤐

מֹשֶׁה֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיָּבֹ֤א אֶל־ פְּנֵ֖י אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃פ mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn way·yā·ḇō ’el- pə·nê ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 43

and the LORD said to Moses…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 44

“Get away from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.” And [Moses and Aaron] fell facedown…

הֵרֹ֗מּוּ מִתּוֹךְ֙ הַזֹּ֔את הָעֵדָ֣ה וַאֲכַלֶּ֥ה אֹתָ֖ם כְּרָ֑גַע וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־ פְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ hê·rōm·mū mit·tō·wḵ haz·zōṯ hā·‘ê·ḏāh wa·’ă·ḵal·leh ’ō·ṯām kə·rā·ḡa‘ way·yip·pə·lū ‘al- pə·nê·hemWLC · 45

Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, place fire from the altar… in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, because wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has begun.”

מֹשֶׁ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֗ן קַ֣ח אֶת־ הַ֠מַּחְתָּה וְתֶן־ אֵ֜שׁ עָלֶ֨יהָ הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ וְשִׂ֣ים מֵעַ֤ל קְטֹ֔רֶת וְהוֹלֵ֧ךְ מְהֵרָ֛ה אֶל־ הָעֵדָ֖ה וְכַפֵּ֣ר עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־ הַקֶּ֛צֶף יָצָ֥א מִלִּפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה הַנָּֽגֶף׃ הֵחֵ֥ל mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- ’a·hă·rōn qaḥ ’eṯ- ham·maḥ·tāh wə·ṯen- ’êš ‘ā·le·hā ham·miz·bê·aḥ wə·śîm mê·‘al qə·ṭō·reṯ wə·hō·w·lêḵ mə·hê·rāh ’el- hā·‘ê·ḏāh wə·ḵap·pêr ‘ă·lê·hem kî- haq·qe·ṣep̄ yā·ṣā mil·lip̄·nê Yah·weh han·nā·ḡep̄ hê·ḥêlWLC · 46

So Aaron took [the censer] as Moses had ordered and ran into the midst of the assembly… And seeing that the plague had begun among the people,… he offered the incense and made atonement for the people.

אַהֲרֹ֜ן וַיִּקַּ֨ח כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ מֹשֶׁ֗ה דִּבֶּ֣ר וַיָּ֙רָץ֙ אֶל־ תּ֣וֹך הַקָּהָ֔ל וְהִנֵּ֛ה הַנֶּ֖גֶף הֵחֵ֥ל בָּעָ֑ם וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶֽת־ הַקְּטֹ֔רֶת וַיְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־ הָעָֽם׃ ’a·hă·rōn way·yiq·qaḥ ka·’ă·šer mō·šeh dib·ber way·yā·rāṣ ’el- tōḵ haq·qā·hāl wə·hin·nêh han·ne·ḡep̄ hê·ḥêl bā·‘ām way·yit·tên ’eṯ- haq·qə·ṭō·reṯ way·ḵap·pêr ‘al- hā·‘āmWLC · 47

He stood between… the living and the dead, and the plague was halted.

וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד בֵּֽין־ וּבֵ֣ין הַֽחַיִּ֑ים הַמֵּתִ֖ים הַמַּגֵּפָֽה׃ וַתֵּעָצַ֖ר way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ bên- ū·ḇên ha·ḥay·yîm ham·mê·ṯîm ham·mag·gê·p̄āh wat·tê·‘ā·ṣarWLC · 48

  • But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700…,… in addition to those who had died on account of Korah.

וַיִּהְי֗וּ הַמֵּתִים֙ בַּמַּגֵּפָ֔ה אַרְבָּעָ֥ה עָשָׂ֛ר אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁבַ֣ע מֵא֑וֹת מִלְּבַ֥ד הַמֵּתִ֖ים עַל־ דְּבַר־ קֹֽרַח׃ way·yih·yū ham·mê·ṯîm bam·mag·gê·p̄āh ’ar·bā·‘āh ‘ā·śār ’e·lep̄ ū·šə·ḇa‘ mê·’ō·wṯ mil·lə·ḇaḏ ham·mê·ṯîm ‘al- də·ḇar- qō·raḥWLC · 49

Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, since the plague had been halted.

אַהֲרֹן֙ וַיָּ֤שָׁב אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְהַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה נֶעֱצָֽרָה׃פ ’a·hă·rōn way·yā·šāḇ ’el- mō·šeh ’el- pe·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·ham·mag·gê·p̄āh ne·‘ĕ·ṣā·rāhWLC · 50
