Vengeance on Midian

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Take vengeance… on the Midianites for the Israelites… After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
𐤍𐤒𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤕𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤊
נְקֹ֗ם נִקְמַת֙ מֵאֵ֖ת הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵ֥ף אֶל־ עַמֶּֽיךָ׃ nə·qōm niq·maṯ mê·’êṯ ham·miḏ·yā·nîm bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’a·ḥar tê·’ā·sêp̄ ’el- ‘am·me·ḵā — WLC · 2

So Moses told… the people…, “Arm… some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.

Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel -…”

So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel— twelve… thousand armed for war.

מֵאַלְפֵ֣י וַיִּמָּֽסְרוּ֙ לַמַּטֶּ֑ה אֶ֖לֶף יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֥י צָבָֽא׃ mê·’al·p̄ê way·yim·mā·sə·rū lam·maṭ·ṭeh ’e·lep̄ yiś·rā·’êl šə·nêm- ‘ā·śār ’e·lep̄ ḥă·lū·ṣê ṣā·ḇā — WLC · 5

And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest,… who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

מֹשֶׁ֛ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אֹתָ֥ם אֶ֥לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֖ה לַצָּבָ֑א אֹ֠תָם וְאֶת־ פִּ֨ינְחָ֜ס בֶּן־ אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ לַצָּבָ֔א בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ וּכְלֵ֥י הַקֹּ֛דֶשׁ וַחֲצֹצְר֥וֹת הַתְּרוּעָ֖ה mō·šeh way·yiš·laḥ ’ō·ṯām ’e·lep̄ lam·maṭ·ṭeh laṣ·ṣā·ḇā ’ō·ṯām wə·’eṯ- pî·nə·ḥās ben- ’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên laṣ·ṣā·ḇā bə·yā·ḏōw ū·ḵə·lê haq·qō·ḏeš wa·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ hat·tə·rū·‘āh — WLC · 6

Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

וַֽיִּצְבְּאוּ֙ עַל־ מִדְיָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ צִוָּ֥ה מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ כָּל־ זָכָֽר׃ way·yiṣ·bə·’ū ‘al- miḏ·yān ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ- ṣiw·wāh mō·šeh way·ya·har·ḡū kāl- zā·ḵār — WLC · 7

- Among the slain [were] - Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba— the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

וְאֶת־ עַל־ חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם אֶת־ הָרְג֣וּ מַלְכֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן אֱוִ֤י וְאֶת־ רֶ֙קֶם֙ וְאֶת־ צ֤וּר וְאֶת־ חוּר֙ וְאֶת־ רֶ֔בַע חֲמֵ֖שֶׁת מַלְכֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן וְאֵת֙ הָרְג֖וּ בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ בְּע֔וֹר בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ wə·’eṯ- ‘al- ḥal·lê·hem ’eṯ- hā·rə·ḡū mal·ḵê miḏ·yān ’ĕ·wî wə·’eṯ- re·qem wə·’eṯ- ṣūr wə·’eṯ- ḥūr wə·’eṯ- re·ḇa‘ ḥă·mê·šeṯ mal·ḵê miḏ·yān wə·’êṯ hā·rə·ḡū bil·‘ām ben- bə·‘ō·wr be·ḥā·reḇ — WLC · 8

The Israelites… captured the Midianite women and their children -, and they plundered all their herds, - flocks, - and goods.
𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤈𐤐𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤆𐤆𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤌
בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיִּשְׁבּ֧וּ אֶת־ מִדְיָ֖ן וְאֶת־ נְשֵׁ֥י טַפָּ֑ם וְאֵ֨ת בָּזָֽזוּ׃ כָּל־ בְּהֶמְתָּ֧ם וְאֶת־ כָּל־ מִקְנֵהֶ֛ם וְאֶת־ כָּל־ חֵילָ֖ם ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·bū ’eṯ- miḏ·yān wə·’eṯ- nə·šê ṭap·pām wə·’êṯ bā·zā·zū kāl- bə·hem·tām wə·’eṯ- kāl- miq·nê·hem wə·’eṯ- kāl- ḥê·lām — WLC · 9

Then they burned… all the cities where [the Midianites] had lived, as well as all their encampments,
𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤓𐤐𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤉𐤓𐤕𐤌
וְאֵ֤ת שָׂרְפ֖וּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ כָּל־ עָרֵיהֶם֙ בְּמ֣וֹשְׁבֹתָ֔ם וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־ טִֽירֹתָ֑ם wə·’êṯ śā·rə·p̄ū bā·’êš kāl- ‘ā·rê·hem bə·mō·wō·šə·ḇō·ṯām wə·’êṯ kāl- ṭî·rō·ṯām — WLC · 10

and carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.
𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄
וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־ הַמַּלְק֑וֹחַ בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ way·yiq·ḥū ’eṯ- kāl- haš·šā·lāl wə·’êṯ kāl- ham·mal·qō·w·aḥ bā·’ā·ḏām ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māh — WLC · 11

They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation… of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab -, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤎
וַיָּבִ֡אוּ הַשְּׁבִ֧י וְאֶת־ הַמַּלְק֛וֹחַ וְאֶת־ הַשָּׁלָ֖ל אֶל־ מֹשֶׁה֩ וְאֶל־ אֶלְעָזָ֨ר הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְאֶל־ עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־ אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה אֶל־ עַֽרְבֹ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ יַרְדֵּ֥ן יְרֵחֽוֹ׃ס way·yā·ḇi·’ū haš·šə·ḇî wə·’eṯ- ham·mal·qō·w·aḥ wə·’eṯ- haš·šā·lāl ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên wə·’el- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh ’el- ‘ar·ḇōṯ mō·w·’āḇ ’ă·šer ‘al- yar·dên yə·rê·ḥōw — WLC · 12

And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them… outside the camp.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄
מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְכָל־ נְשִׂיאֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ לִקְרָאתָ֑ם אֶל־ מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ mō·šeh wə·’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên wə·ḵāl nə·śî·’ê hā·‘ê·ḏāh way·yê·ṣə·’ū liq·rā·ṯām ’el- mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh — WLC · 13

But Moses was angry with the officers of the army— the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds— who were returning from the battle.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤒𐤅𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄
מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּקְצֹ֣ף עַ֖ל פְּקוּדֵ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל שָׂרֵ֤י הָאֲלָפִים֙ וְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֔וֹת הַבָּאִ֖ים מִצְּבָ֥א הַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ mō·šeh way·yiq·ṣōp̄ ‘al pə·qū·ḏê he·ḥā·yil śā·rê hā·’ă·lā·p̄îm wə·śā·rê ham·mê·’ō·wṯ hab·bā·’îm miṣ·ṣə·ḇā ham·mil·ḥā·māh — WLC · 14

“Have you spared all the women?” he asked them…
𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤒𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
הַֽחִיִּיתֶ֖ם כָּל־ נְקֵבָֽה׃ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם ha·ḥî·yî·ṯem kāl- nə·qê·ḇāh mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem — WLC · 15

“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor -, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.
𐤄𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
הֵ֣ן הֵ֜נָּה הָי֨וּ לִבְנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר בִּלְעָ֔ם לִמְסָר־ מַ֥עַל בַּיהוָ֖ה עַל־ פְּע֑וֹר דְּבַר־ הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה וַתְּהִ֥י בַּעֲדַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃ hên hên·nāh hā·yū liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl biḏ·ḇar bil·‘ām lim·sār- ma·‘al Yah·weh ‘al- pə·‘ō·wr də·ḇar- ham·mag·gê·p̄āh wat·tə·hî ba·‘ă·ḏaṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 16

So now, kill all the boys…, as well as every woman who has had relations with… a man,

וְעַתָּ֕ה הִרְג֥וּ כָל־ זָכָ֖ר בַּטָּ֑ף הֲרֹֽגוּ׃ וְכָל־ אִשָּׁ֗ה יֹדַ֥עַת אִ֛ישׁ לְמִשְׁכַּ֥ב זָכָ֖ר wə·‘at·tāh hir·ḡū ḵāl zā·ḵār baṭ·ṭāp̄ hă·rō·ḡū wə·ḵāl ’iš·šāh yō·ḏa·‘aṯ ’îš lə·miš·kaḇ zā·ḵār — WLC · 17

but spare for yourselves every girl… who has never had relations… with a man.

הַחֲי֖וּ לָכֶֽם׃ וְכֹל֙ הַטַּ֣ף בַּנָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־ יָדְע֖וּ מִשְׁכַּ֣ב זָכָ֑ר ha·ḥă·yū lā·ḵem wə·ḵōl haṭ·ṭap̄ ban·nā·šîm ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḏə·‘ū miš·kaḇ zā·ḵār — WLC · 18

All of you who have killed a person… or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify [both] yourselves and your captives.
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤕𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤊𐤌
כֹּל֩ הֹרֵ֨ג נֶ֜פֶשׁ וְכֹ֣ל׀ נֹגֵ֣עַ בֶּֽחָלָ֗ל וְאַתֶּ֗ם חֲנ֛וּ מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ בַּיּ֤וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י וּבַיּ֣וֹם תִּֽתְחַטְּא֞וּ אַתֶּ֖ם וּשְׁבִיכֶֽם׃ kōl hō·rêḡ ne·p̄eš wə·ḵōl nō·ḡê·a‘ be·ḥā·lāl wə·’at·tem ḥă·nū mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm tiṯ·ḥaṭ·ṭə·’ū ’at·tem ū·šə·ḇî·ḵem — WLC · 19

And purify every garment and leather… good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”
