Chapter 5

Cleansing the Camps

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Command the Israelites… to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.

𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤏 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔

צַ֚ו אֶת־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וִֽישַׁלְּחוּ֙ מִן־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה כָּל־ צָר֖וּעַ וְכָל־ זָ֑ב וְכֹ֖ל טָמֵ֥א לָנָֽפֶשׁ׃ ṣaw ’eṯ- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wî·šal·lə·ḥū min- ham·ma·ḥă·neh kāl- ṣā·rū·a‘ wə·ḵāl zāḇ wə·ḵōl ṭā·mê lā·nā·p̄ešWLC · 2

You must send away… male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”

תְּשַׁלֵּ֔חוּ אֶל־ מִזָּכָ֤ר עַד־ נְקֵבָה֙ תְּשַׁלְּח֑וּם מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה וְלֹ֤א יְטַמְּאוּ֙ אֶת־ מַ֣חֲנֵיהֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י שֹׁכֵ֥ן בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ tə·šal·lê·ḥū ’el- miz·zā·ḵār ‘aḏ- nə·qê·ḇāh tə·šal·lə·ḥūm mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh wə·lō yə·ṭam·mə·’ū ’eṯ- ma·ḥă·nê·hem ’ă·šer ’ă·nî šō·ḵên bə·ṯō·w·ḵāmWLC · 3

So the Israelites… did this, sending [such people] vvv outside the camp. [They]… did just as the LORD… had instructed Moses

Confession and Restitution

And the LORD said to Moses…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 5

“Tell… the Israelites that… when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤄

דַּבֵּר֮ אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ כִּ֤י אִ֣ישׁ אֽוֹ־ אִשָּׁ֗ה לִמְעֹ֥ל מַ֖עַל בַּיהוָ֑ה יַעֲשׂוּ֙ מִכָּל־ חַטֹּ֣את הָֽאָדָ֔ם הַהִֽוא׃ הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ וְאָֽשְׁמָ֖ה dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl kî ’îš ’ōw- ’iš·šāh lim·‘ōl ma·‘al Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śū mik·kāl ḥaṭ·ṭōṯ hā·’ā·ḏām ha·hi·w han·ne·p̄eš wə·’ā·šə·māhWLC · 6

and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution, -… add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged

וְהִתְוַדּ֗וּ אֶֽת־ חַטָּאתָם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשׂוּ֒ וְהֵשִׁ֤יב אֶת־ אֲשָׁמוֹ֙ בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ יֹסֵ֣ף וַחֲמִישִׁת֖וֹ עָלָ֑יו וְנָתַ֕ן לַאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָשַׁ֥ם לֽוֹ׃ wə·hiṯ·wad·dū ’eṯ- ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯām ’ă·šer ‘ā·śū wə·hê·šîḇ ’eṯ- ’ă·šā·mōw bə·rō·šōw yō·sêp̄ wa·ḥă·mî·ši·ṯōw ‘ā·lāw wə·nā·ṯan la·’ă·šer ’ā·šam lōwWLC · 7

But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong…, vvv the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him.

וְאִם־ לָאִ֜ישׁ אֵ֨ין גֹּאֵ֗ל לְהָשִׁ֤יב הָאָשָׁם֙ אֵלָ֔יו הָאָשָׁ֛ם הַמּוּשָׁ֥ב לַיהוָ֖ה לַכֹּהֵ֑ן מִלְּבַ֗ד אֵ֚יל הַכִּפֻּרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְכַפֶּר־ בּ֖וֹ עָלָֽיו׃ wə·’im- lā·’îš ’ên gō·’êl lə·hā·šîḇ hā·’ā·šām ’ê·lāw hā·’ā·šām ham·mū·šāḇ Yah·weh lak·kō·hên mil·lə·ḇaḏ ’êl hak·kip·pu·rîm ’ă·šer yə·ḵap·per- bōw ‘ā·lāwWLC · 8

Every sacred contribution… the Israelites… bring to the priest shall belong to him.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤅

וְכָל־ קָדְשֵׁ֧י תְּרוּמָ֞ה לְכָל־ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ יַקְרִ֥יבוּ לַכֹּהֵ֖ן יִהְיֶֽה׃ ל֥וֹ wə·ḵāl qā·ḏə·šê tə·rū·māh lə·ḵāl ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- yaq·rî·ḇū lak·kō·hên yih·yeh lōwWLC · 9

Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, [but] whatever [he] gives to the priest will belong to [the priest].”

וְאִ֥ישׁ אֶת־ קֳדָשָׁ֖יו ל֣וֹ יִהְי֑וּ אֲשֶׁר־ אִ֛ישׁ יִתֵּ֥ן לַכֹּהֵ֖ן יִהְיֶֽה׃פ ל֥וֹ wə·’îš ’eṯ- qo·ḏā·šāw lōw yih·yū ’ă·šer- ’îš yit·tên lak·kō·hên yih·yeh lōwWLC · 10

The Adultery Test

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 11

“Speak to the Israelites… and tell them that… if any man’s… wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤔𐤈𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋

דַּבֵּר֙ אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־ אִ֥ישׁ אִישׁ֙ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ תִשְׂטֶ֣ה וּמָעֲלָ֥ה ב֖וֹ מָֽעַל׃ dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kî- ’îš ’îš ’iš·tōw ṯiś·ṭeh ū·mā·‘ă·lāh ḇōw mā·‘alWLC · 12

by sleeping with another man…, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),

𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤁 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤕 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤎𐤕𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤄

וְשָׁכַ֨ב אִ֣ישׁ אֹתָהּ֮ שִׁכְבַת־ זֶרַע֒ וְנֶעְלַם֙ מֵעֵינֵ֣י אִישָׁ֔הּ וְהִ֣יא נִטְמָ֑אָה וְנִסְתְּרָ֖ה אֵ֣ין וְעֵד֙ בָּ֔הּ וְהִ֖וא לֹ֥א נִתְפָּֽשָׂה׃ wə·šā·ḵaḇ ’îš ’ō·ṯāh šiḵ·ḇaṯ- ze·ra‘ wə·ne‘·lam mê·‘ê·nê ’î·šāh wə·hî niṭ·mā·’āh wə·nis·tə·rāh ’ên wə·‘êḏ bāh wə·hi·w lō niṯ·pā·śāhWLC · 13

and if a feeling of jealousy comes over [her husband] and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself— or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself—

𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤅 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄

רֽוּחַ־ קִנְאָ֛ה וְעָבַ֨ר עָלָ֧יו וְקִנֵּ֥א אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ וְהִ֣וא נִטְמָ֑אָה אוֹ־ רֽוּחַ־ קִנְאָה֙ עָבַ֨ר עָלָ֤יו וְקִנֵּ֣א אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וְהִ֖יא לֹ֥א נִטְמָֽאָה׃ rū·aḥ- qin·’āh wə·‘ā·ḇar ‘ā·lāw wə·qin·nê ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw wə·hi·w niṭ·mā·’āh ’ōw- rū·aḥ- qin·’āh ‘ā·ḇar ‘ā·lāw wə·qin·nê ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw wə·hî lō niṭ·mā·’āhWLC · 14

then [he] is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He is not to pour oil… over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity.

𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤌𐤇 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤑𐤒 𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤍

הָאִ֣ישׁ אֶת־ וְהֵבִ֨יא אִשְׁתּוֹ֮ אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵן֒ וְהֵבִ֤יא אֶת־ עָלֶ֔יהָ קָרְבָּנָהּ֙ עֲשִׂירִ֥ת הָאֵיפָ֖ה שְׂעֹרִ֑ים קֶ֣מַח לֹֽא־ יִצֹ֨ק שֶׁ֗מֶן וְלֹֽא־ עָלָ֜יו יִתֵּ֤ן לְבֹנָ֔ה עָלָיו֙ כִּֽי־ ה֔וּא מִנְחַ֤ת קְנָאֹת֙ מִנְחַ֥ת זִכָּר֖וֹן מַזְכֶּ֥רֶת עָוֺֽן׃ hā·’îš ’eṯ- wə·hê·ḇî ’iš·tōw ’el- hak·kō·hên wə·hê·ḇî ’eṯ- ‘ā·le·hā qā·rə·bā·nāh ‘ă·śî·riṯ hā·’ê·p̄āh śə·‘ō·rîm qe·maḥ lō- yi·ṣōq še·men wə·lō- ‘ā·lāw yit·tên lə·ḇō·nāh ‘ā·lāw kî- hū min·ḥaṯ qə·nā·’ōṯ min·ḥaṯ zik·kā·rō·wn maz·ke·reṯ ‘ā·wōnWLC · 15

The priest is to bring [the wife] forward and have her stand before the LORD.

𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְהִקְרִ֥יב אֹתָ֖הּ וְהֶֽעֱמִדָ֖הּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ hak·kō·hên wə·hiq·rîḇ ’ō·ṯāh wə·he·‘ĕ·mi·ḏāh lip̄·nê Yah·wehWLC · 16

Then [he] is to take [some] holy water in a clay jar - and put some of the dust - from the tabernacle floor into the water.

𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤁𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤒𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌

הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְלָקַ֧ח קְדֹשִׁ֖ים מַ֥יִם חָ֑רֶשׂ בִּכְלִי־ יִקַּ֥ח הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְנָתַ֥ן וּמִן־ הֶֽעָפָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִהְיֶה֙ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן בְּקַרְקַ֣ע אֶל־ הַמָּֽיִם׃ hak·kō·hên wə·lā·qaḥ qə·ḏō·šîm ma·yim ḥā·reś biḵ·lî- yiq·qaḥ hak·kō·hên wə·nā·ṯan ū·min- he·‘ā·p̄ār ’ă·šer yih·yeh ham·miš·kān bə·qar·qa‘ ’el- ham·mā·yimWLC · 17

After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse.

𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤓𐤉𐤌

הַכֹּהֵ֥ן אֶֽת־ הָאִשָּׁה֮ וְהֶעֱמִ֨יד לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָה֒ וּפָרַע֙ אֶת־ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה רֹ֣אשׁ וְנָתַ֣ן עַל־ כַּפֶּ֗יהָ אֵ֚ת מִנְחַ֣ת הַזִּכָּר֔וֹן הִ֑וא מִנְחַ֥ת קְנָאֹ֖ת הַכֹּהֵן֙ יִהְי֔וּ וּבְיַ֤ד הַמָּרִ֖ים מֵ֥י הַמְאָֽרֲרִֽים׃ hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- hā·’iš·šāh wə·he·‘ĕ·mîḏ lip̄·nê Yah·weh ū·p̄ā·ra‘ ’eṯ- hā·’iš·šāh rōš wə·nā·ṯan ‘al- kap·pe·hā ’êṯ min·ḥaṯ haz·zik·kā·rō·wn hî min·ḥaṯ qə·nā·’ōṯ hak·kō·hên yih·yū ū·ḇə·yaḏ ham·mā·rîm mê ham·’ā·ră·rîmWLC · 18

And [he] is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man… has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse.

הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְהִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ אֹתָ֜הּ וְאָמַ֤ר אֶל־ הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ אִם־ לֹ֨א אִישׁ֙ אֹתָ֔ךְ שָׁכַ֥ב וְאִם־ לֹ֥א שָׂטִ֛ית טֻמְאָ֖ה תַּ֣חַת אִישֵׁ֑ךְ הִנָּקִ֕י הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ הַמָּרִ֥ים מִמֵּ֛י הַֽמְאָרֲרִ֖ים hak·kō·hên wə·hiš·bî·a‘ ’ō·ṯāh wə·’ā·mar ’el- hā·’iš·šāh ’im- lō ’îš ’ō·ṯāḵ šā·ḵaḇ wə·’im- lō śā·ṭîṯ ṭum·’āh ta·ḥaṯ ’î·šêḵ hin·nā·qî hā·’êl·leh ham·mā·rîm mim·mê ham·’ā·ră·rîmWLC · 19

But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’—

𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤈𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤊

כִּ֥י וְאַ֗תְּ שָׂטִ֛ית תַּ֥חַת אִישֵׁ֖ךְ וְכִ֣י נִטְמֵ֑את וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׁכָבְתּ֔וֹ אִ֥ישׁ בָּךְ֙ אֶת־ מִֽבַּלְעֲדֵ֖י אִישֵֽׁךְ׃ kî wə·’at śā·ṭîṯ ta·ḥaṯ ’î·šêḵ wə·ḵî niṭ·mêṯ way·yit·tên šə·ḵā·ḇə·tōw ’îš bāḵ ’eṯ- mib·bal·‘ă·ḏê ’î·šêḵWLC · 20

and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse - -— ‘then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell.

הַכֹּהֵ֥ן אֶֽת־ הָֽאִשָּׁה֮ וְהִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ בִּשְׁבֻעַ֣ת הָאָלָה֒ הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְאָמַ֤ר לָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה יְהוָ֥ה יִתֵּ֨ן אוֹתָ֛ךְ לְאָלָ֥ה וְלִשְׁבֻעָ֖ה בְּת֣וֹךְ עַמֵּ֑ךְ יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־ בְּתֵ֨ת יְרֵכֵךְ֙ נֹפֶ֔לֶת וְאֶת־ בִּטְנֵ֖ךְ צָבָֽה׃ hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- hā·’iš·šāh wə·hiš·bî·a‘ biš·ḇu·‘aṯ hā·’ā·lāh hak·kō·hên wə·’ā·mar lā·’iš·šāh Yah·weh yit·tên ’ō·w·ṯāḵ lə·’ā·lāh wə·liš·ḇu·‘āh bə·ṯō·wḵ ‘am·mêḵ Yah·weh ’eṯ- bə·ṯêṯ yə·rê·ḵêḵ nō·p̄e·leṯ wə·’eṯ- biṭ·nêḵ ṣā·ḇāhWLC · 21

May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’

הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַמַּ֨יִם הַמְאָרְרִ֤ים וּ֠בָאוּ בְּֽמֵעַ֔יִךְ בֶּ֖טֶן לַצְבּ֥וֹת יָרֵ֑ךְ וְלַנְפִּ֣ל הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וְאָמְרָ֥ה אָמֵ֥ן׀ אָמֵֽן׃ hā·’êl·leh ham·ma·yim ham·’ā·rə·rîm ū·ḇā·’ū bə·mê·‘a·yiḵ be·ṭen laṣ·bō·wṯ yā·rêḵ wə·lan·pil hā·’iš·šāh wə·’ā·mə·rāh ’ā·mên ’ā·mênWLC · 22

And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.

הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְ֠כָתַב אֶת־ הָאֵ֛לֶּה הָאָלֹ֥ת בַּסֵּ֑פֶר וּמָחָ֖ה אֶל־ הַמָּרִֽים׃ מֵ֥י hak·kō·hên wə·ḵā·ṯaḇ ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh hā·’ā·lōṯ bas·sê·p̄er ū·mā·ḥāh ’el- ham·mā·rîm mêWLC · 23

He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and may cause her bitter suffering.

הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה אֶת־ וְהִשְׁקָה֙ אֶת־ הַמָּרִ֖ים מֵ֥י הַמְאָֽרֲרִ֑ים הַמַּ֥יִם וּבָ֥אוּ בָ֛הּ לְמָרִֽים׃ הַֽמְאָרֲרִ֖ים hā·’iš·šāh ’eṯ- wə·hiš·qāh ’eṯ- ham·mā·rîm mê ham·’ā·ră·rîm ham·ma·yim ū·ḇā·’ū ḇāh lə·mā·rîm ham·’ā·ră·rîmWLC · 24

The priest shall take from [her] hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave [it] before the LORD, and bring it to the altar.

הַכֹּהֵן֙ וְלָקַ֤ח הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה אֵ֖ת מִיַּ֣ד מִנְחַ֣ת הַקְּנָאֹ֑ת וְהֵנִ֤יף אֶת־ הַמִּנְחָה֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְהִקְרִ֥יב אֹתָ֖הּ אֶל־ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ hak·kō·hên wə·lā·qaḥ hā·’iš·šāh ’êṯ mî·yaḏ min·ḥaṯ haq·qə·nā·’ōṯ wə·hê·nîp̄ ’eṯ- ham·min·ḥāh lip̄·nê Yah·weh wə·hiq·rîḇ ’ō·ṯāh ’el- ham·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 25

Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water.

הַכֹּהֵ֤ן וְקָמַ֨ץ מִן־ הַמִּנְחָה֙ אֶת־ אַזְכָּ֣רָתָ֔הּ וְהִקְטִ֖יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חָה וְאַחַ֛ר הָאִשָּׁ֖ה אֶת־ יַשְׁקֶ֥ה אֶת־ הַמָּֽיִם׃ hak·kō·hên wə·qā·maṣ min- ham·min·ḥāh ’eṯ- ’az·kā·rā·ṯāh wə·hiq·ṭîr ham·miz·bê·ḥāh wə·’a·ḥar hā·’iš·šāh ’eṯ- yaš·qeh ’eṯ- ham·mā·yimWLC · 26

When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful… to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become… accursed among her people.

וְהִשְׁקָ֣הּ אֶת־ הַמַּ֗יִם וְהָיְתָ֣ה אִֽם־ נִטְמְאָה֮ וַתִּמְעֹ֣ל מַ֣עַל בְּאִישָׁהּ֒ הַמַּ֤יִם הַמְאָֽרֲרִים֙ וּבָ֨אוּ בָ֜הּ לְמָרִ֔ים בִטְנָ֔הּ וְצָבְתָ֣ה יְרֵכָ֑הּ וְנָפְלָ֖ה וְהָיְתָ֧ה הָאִשָּׁ֛ה לְאָלָ֖ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב עַמָּֽהּ׃ wə·hiš·qāh ’eṯ- ham·ma·yim wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ’im- niṭ·mə·’āh wat·tim·‘ōl ma·‘al bə·’î·šāh ham·ma·yim ham·’ā·ră·rîm ū·ḇā·’ū ḇāh lə·mā·rîm ḇiṭ·nāh wə·ṣā·ḇə·ṯāh yə·rê·ḵāh wə·nā·p̄ə·lāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh hā·’iš·šāh lə·’ā·lāh bə·qe·reḇ ‘am·māhWLC · 27

But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children.

וְאִם־ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה לֹ֤א נִטְמְאָה֙ וּטְהֹרָ֖ה הִ֑וא וְנִקְּתָ֖ה וְנִזְרְעָ֥ה זָֽרַע׃ wə·’im- hā·’iš·šāh lō niṭ·mə·’āh ū·ṭə·hō·rāh hî wə·niq·qə·ṯāh wə·niz·rə·‘āh zā·ra‘WLC · 28

This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority,

𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤈𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄

זֹ֥את תּוֹרַ֖ת הַקְּנָאֹ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִשָּׁ֛ה תִּשְׂטֶ֥ה וְנִטְמָֽאָה׃ תַּ֥חַת אִישָׁ֖הּ zōṯ tō·w·raṯ haq·qə·nā·’ōṯ ’ă·šer ’iš·šāh tiś·ṭeh wə·niṭ·mā·’āh ta·ḥaṯ ’î·šāhWLC · 29

or when a feeling of jealousy comes over… a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.

𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄

א֣וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר ר֥וּחַ קִנְאָ֖ה תַּעֲבֹ֥ר עָלָ֛יו אִ֗ישׁ וְקִנֵּ֣א אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וְהֶעֱמִ֤יד אֶת־ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה הַכֹּהֵ֔ן אֵ֥ת וְעָ֤שָׂה לָהּ֙ הַזֹּֽאת׃ כָּל־ הַתּוֹרָ֖ה ’ōw ’ă·šer rū·aḥ qin·’āh ta·‘ă·ḇōr ‘ā·lāw ’îš wə·qin·nê ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw hā·’iš·šāh wə·he·‘ĕ·mîḏ ’eṯ- lip̄·nê Yah·weh hak·kō·hên ’êṯ wə·‘ā·śāh lāh haz·zōṯ kāl- hat·tō·w·rāhWLC · 30

The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”
