Chapter 18

Provision for Priests and Levites

1

The Levitical priests— indeed the whole tribe of Levi— shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They are to eat the food offerings to the LORD; that is their inheritance.

𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅

הַלְוִיִּ֜ם לַכֹּהֲנִ֨ים כָּל־ שֵׁ֧בֶט לֵוִ֛י יִ֠הְיֶה לֹֽא־ חֵ֥לֶק וְנַחֲלָ֖ה עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יֹאכֵלֽוּן׃ אִשֵּׁ֧י יְהוָ֛ה וְנַחֲלָת֖וֹ hal·wî·yim lak·kō·hă·nîm kāl- šê·ḇeṭ lê·wî yih·yeh lō- ḥê·leq wə·na·ḥă·lāh ‘im- yiś·rā·’êl yō·ḵê·lūn ’iš·šê Yah·weh wə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 1

Although they have no inheritance among their brothers, the LORD… [is] their inheritance, as He promised them.

יִֽהְיֶה־ לּ֖וֹ לֹא־ וְנַחֲלָ֥ה בְּקֶ֣רֶב אֶחָ֑יו יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא נַחֲלָת֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּר־ לֽוֹ׃ס yih·yeh- lōw lō- wə·na·ḥă·lāh bə·qe·reḇ ’e·ḥāw Yah·weh hū na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw ka·’ă·šer dib·ber- lōwWLC · 2

This shall be the priests’… share from the people… who offer a sacrifice, whether a bull or a sheep: the priests are to be given the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.

וְזֶ֡ה יִהְיֶה֩ הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים מֵאֵ֣ת מִשְׁפַּ֨ט הָעָ֗ם מֵאֵ֛ת זֹבְחֵ֥י הַזֶּ֖בַח אִם־ שׁ֣וֹר אִם־ שֶׂ֑ה לַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְנָתַן֙ הַזְּרֹ֥עַ וְהַלְּחָיַ֖יִם וְהַקֵּבָֽה׃ wə·zeh yih·yeh hak·kō·hă·nîm mê·’êṯ miš·paṭ hā·‘ām mê·’êṯ zō·ḇə·ḥê haz·ze·ḇaḥ ’im- šō·wr ’im- śeh lak·kō·hên wə·nā·ṯan haz·zə·rō·a‘ wə·hal·lə·ḥā·ya·yim wə·haq·qê·ḇāhWLC · 3

You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the first wool sheared from your flock.

תִּתֶּן־ לּֽוֹ׃ רֵאשִׁ֨ית דְּגָֽנְךָ֜ תִּֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ וְיִצְהָרֶ֗ךָ וְרֵאשִׁ֛ית גֵּ֥ז צֹאנְךָ֖ tit·ten- lōw rê·šîṯ də·ḡā·nə·ḵā tî·rō·šə·ḵā wə·yiṣ·hā·re·ḵā wə·rê·šîṯ gêz ṣō·nə·ḵāWLC · 4

For the LORD your God has chosen [Levi] and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and minister in [His]… name for all time.

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤎

כִּ֣י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בָּחַ֛ר ב֗וֹ וּבָנָ֖יו מִכָּל־ שְׁבָטֶ֑יךָ לַעֲמֹ֨ד לְשָׁרֵ֧ת יְהוָ֛ה ה֥וּא בְּשֵׁם־ כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ס kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bā·ḥar ḇōw ū·ḇā·nāw mik·kāl šə·ḇā·ṭe·ḵā la·‘ă·mōḏ lə·šā·rêṯ Yah·weh hū bə·šêm- kāl- hay·yā·mîmWLC · 5

Now if a Levite moves from any town… vvv vvv of residence throughout Israel and comes in all earnestness… to the place the LORD will choose,

𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓

וְכִֽי־ הַלֵּוִ֜י יָבֹ֨א מֵאַחַ֤ד שְׁעָרֶ֙יךָ֙ מִכָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ ה֖וּא גָּ֣ר שָׁ֑ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּבָא֙ בְּכָל־ אַוַּ֣ת נַפְשׁ֔וֹ אֶל־ הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָֽה׃ יִבְחַ֥ר wə·ḵî- hal·lê·wî yā·ḇō mê·’a·ḥaḏ šə·‘ā·re·ḵā mik·kāl ’ă·šer- hū gār šām yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇā bə·ḵāl ’aw·waṯ nap̄·šōw ’el- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh yiḇ·ḥarWLC · 6

then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.

𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וְשֵׁרֵ֕ת בְּשֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו כְּכָל־ אֶחָיו֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם הָעֹמְדִ֥ים שָׁ֖ם לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ wə·šê·rêṯ bə·šêm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw kə·ḵāl- ’e·ḥāw hal·wî·yim hā·‘ō·mə·ḏîm šām lip̄·nê Yah·wehWLC · 7

They shall eat equal portions…, even though he has received [money] from the sale of his father’s estate.

יֹאכֵ֑לוּ חֵ֥לֶק כְּחֵ֖לֶק לְבַ֥ד עַל־ מִמְכָּרָ֖יו הָאָבֽוֹת׃ס yō·ḵê·lū ḥê·leq kə·ḥê·leq lə·ḇaḏ ‘al- mim·kā·rāw hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯWLC · 8

Sorcery Forbidden

When you enter… the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not… imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤌

כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ בָּ֣א אֶל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֑ךְ לֹֽא־ תִלְמַ֣ד לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּתוֹעֲבֹ֖ת הַגּוֹיִ֥ם הָהֵֽם׃ kî ’at·tāh bā ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lāḵ lō- ṯil·maḏ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇōṯ hag·gō·w·yim hā·hêmWLC · 9

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination… [or] conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery,

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤒𐤎𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤎𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤔 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤐

לֹֽא־ יִמָּצֵ֣א בְךָ֔ מַעֲבִ֥יר בְּנֽוֹ־ וּבִתּ֖וֹ בָּאֵ֑שׁ קְסָמִ֔ים קֹסֵ֣ם מְעוֹנֵ֥ן וּמְנַחֵ֖שׁ וּמְכַשֵּֽׁף׃ lō- yim·mā·ṣê ḇə·ḵā ma·‘ă·ḇîr bə·nōw- ū·ḇit·tōw bā·’êš qə·sā·mîm qō·sêm mə·‘ō·w·nên ū·mə·na·ḥêš ū·mə·ḵaš·šêp̄WLC · 10

casts spells…, consults a medium or spiritist, or inquires of the dead.

𐤅𐤇𐤁𐤓 𐤇𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤌

וְחֹבֵ֖ר חָ֑בֶר וְשֹׁאֵ֥ל אוֹב֙ וְיִדְּעֹנִ֔י וְדֹרֵ֖שׁ אֶל־ הַמֵּתִֽים׃ wə·ḥō·ḇêr ḥā·ḇer wə·šō·’êl ’ō·wḇ wə·yid·də·‘ō·nî wə·ḏō·rêš ’el- ham·mê·ṯîmWLC · 11

  • For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD. And because of these detestable things, the LORD your God is driving out [the nations] before you.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊

כִּֽי־ כָּל־ עֹ֣שֵׂה אֵ֑לֶּה תוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה וּבִגְלַל֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֣ת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ מוֹרִ֥ישׁ אוֹתָ֖ם מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ kî- kāl- ‘ō·śêh ’êl·leh ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ Yah·weh ū·ḇiḡ·lal hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇōṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā mō·w·rîš ’ō·w·ṯām mip·pā·ne·ḵāWLC · 12

You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤎

תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה תָּמִ֣ים עִ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ס tih·yeh tā·mîm ‘im Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵāWLC · 13

14

Though these nations, which you will dispossess, listen… to conjurers… and diviners, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤎𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤊

כִּ֣י׀ הָאֵ֗לֶּה הַגּוֹיִ֣ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ יוֹרֵ֣שׁ אוֹתָ֔ם יִשְׁמָ֑עוּ וְאַתָּ֕ה אֶל־ מְעֹנְנִ֥ים וְאֶל־ קֹסְמִ֖ים יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ לֹ֣א נָ֛תַן כֵ֔ן לְךָ֖ kî hā·’êl·leh hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer ’at·tāh yō·w·rêš ’ō·w·ṯām yiš·mā·‘ū wə·’at·tāh ’el- mə·‘ō·nə·nîm wə·’el- qō·sə·mîm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lō nå̄·ṯan ḵên lə·ḵāWLC · 14

A Prophet Like Moses

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤊𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ יָקִ֥ים לְךָ֖ נָבִ֨יא כָּמֹ֔נִי מִקִּרְבְּךָ֤ מֵאַחֶ֙יךָ֙ תִּשְׁמָעֽוּן׃ אֵלָ֖יו Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yā·qîm lə·ḵā nā·ḇî kā·mō·nî miq·qir·bə·ḵā mê·’a·ḥe·ḵā tiš·mā·‘ūn ’ê·lāwWLC · 15

This is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”

𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕

כְּכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁאַ֜לְתָּ מֵעִ֨ם יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ בְּחֹרֵ֔ב בְּי֥וֹם הַקָּהָ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֣א אֹסֵ֗ף לִשְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ אֶת־ קוֹל֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔י וְאֶת־ אֶרְאֶ֥ה לֹֽא־ הַזֹּ֛את הַגְּדֹלָ֥ה הָאֵ֨שׁ ע֖וֹד וְלֹ֥א אָמֽוּת׃ kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- šā·’al·tā mê·‘im Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bə·ḥō·rêḇ bə·yō·wm haq·qā·hāl lê·mōr lō ’ō·sêp̄ liš·mō·a‘ ’eṯ- qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāy wə·’eṯ- ’er·’eh lō- haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·lāh hā·’êš ‘ō·wḏ wə·lō ’ā·mūṯWLC · 16

Then the LORD said to me, “They have spoken well. -

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓

יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֑י דִּבֵּֽרוּ׃ הֵיטִ֖יבוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy dib·bê·rū hê·ṭî·ḇū ’ă·šerWLC · 17

18

I will raise up… for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

𐤀𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤅

אָקִ֥ים לָהֶ֛ם נָבִ֨יא כָּמ֑וֹךָ מִקֶּ֥רֶב אֲחֵיהֶ֖ם וְנָתַתִּ֤י דְבָרַי֙ בְּפִ֔יו וְדִבֶּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲצַוֶּֽנּוּ׃ ’ā·qîm lā·hem nā·ḇî kā·mō·w·ḵā miq·qe·reḇ ’ă·ḥê·hem wə·nā·ṯat·tî ḏə·ḇā·ray bə·p̄îw wə·ḏib·ber ’ă·lê·hem ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer ’ă·ṣaw·wen·nūWLC · 18

  • And I will hold accountable… anyone who does not listen to My words that [the prophet] speaks in My name.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉

וְהָיָ֗ה אָנֹכִ֖י אֶדְרֹ֥שׁ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ הָאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יִשְׁמַע֙ אֶל־ דְּבָרַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְדַבֵּ֖ר בִּשְׁמִ֑י wə·hā·yāh ’ā·nō·ḵî ’eḏ·rōš mê·‘im·mōw hā·’îš ’ă·šer lō- yiš·ma‘ ’el- də·ḇā·ray ’ă·šer yə·ḏab·bêr biš·mîWLC · 19

20

But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, [or] to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.”

  • You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?”

וְכִ֥י תֹאמַ֖ר בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ אֵיכָה֙ נֵדַ֣ע אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ לֹא־ דִבְּר֖וֹ wə·ḵî ṯō·mar bil·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā ’ê·ḵāh nê·ḏa‘ ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer Yah·weh lō- ḏib·bə·rōwWLC · 21

When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass [or] come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
