Chapter 21
Atonement for an Unsolved Murder
1
If [one] is found slain, lying in a field in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤅
כִּי־ יִמָּצֵ֣א חָלָ֗ל נֹפֵ֖ל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה בָּאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ נֹתֵ֤ן לְךָ֙ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ לֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע מִ֥י הִכָּֽהוּ׃ kî- yim·mā·ṣê ḥā·lāl nō·p̄êl baś·śā·ḏeh bā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lə·ḵā lə·riš·tāh lō nō·w·ḏa‘ mî hik·kā·hū — WLC · 1

your elders and judges must come out and measure the distance from the victim to the neighboring cities -.

Then the elders… of the city nearest the victim shall take a heifer… that has never been yoked or used for work

וְהָיָ֣ה זִקְנֵי֩ הָעִ֨יר הַהִ֜וא הָעִ֔יר הַקְּרֹבָ֖ה אֶל־ הֶחָלָ֑ל וְלָֽקְח֡וּ עֶגְלַ֣ת בָּקָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ בְּעֹֽל׃ עֻבַּד֙ בָּ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־ מָשְׁכָ֖ה wə·hā·yāh ziq·nê hā·‘îr ha·hi·w hā·‘îr haq·qə·rō·ḇāh ’el- he·ḥā·lāl wə·lā·qə·ḥū ‘eḡ·laṯ bā·qār ’ă·šer lō- bə·‘ōl ‘ub·baḏ bāh ’ă·šer lō- mā·šə·ḵāh — WLC · 3

bring - - the heifer to a valley with running water that has not been plowed or sown, {and break} its neck there by the stream.

וְהוֹרִ֡דוּ זִקְנֵי֩ הַהִ֤וא אֶת־ הָעִ֨יר הָֽעֶגְלָה֙ אֶל־ נַ֣חַל אֵיתָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ יֵעָבֵ֥ד בּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א יִזָּרֵ֑עַ הָעֶגְלָ֖ה וְעָֽרְפוּ־ שָׁ֥ם אֶת־ בַּנָּֽחַל׃ wə·hō·w·ri·ḏū ziq·nê ha·hi·w ’eṯ- hā·‘îr hā·‘eḡ·lāh ’el- na·ḥal ’ê·ṯān ’ă·šer lō- yê·‘ā·ḇêḏ bōw wə·lō yiz·zā·rê·a‘ hā·‘eḡ·lāh wə·‘ā·rə·p̄ū- šām ’eṯ- ban·nā·ḥal — WLC · 4

And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and pronounce blessings in His name and to give a ruling… in every dispute… and case of assault.

הַכֹּהֲנִים֮ בְּנֵ֣י לֵוִי֒ וְנִגְּשׁ֣וּ כִּ֣י בָ֗ם יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּחַ֞ר לְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ וּלְבָרֵ֖ךְ יְהוָ֑ה בְּשֵׁ֣ם וְעַל־ פִּיהֶ֥ם יִהְיֶ֖ה כָּל־ רִ֥יב וְכָל־ נָֽגַע׃ hak·kō·hă·nîm bə·nê lê·wî wə·nig·gə·šū kî ḇām Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bā·ḥar lə·šā·rə·ṯōw ū·lə·ḇā·rêḵ Yah·weh bə·šêm wə·‘al- pî·hem yih·yeh kāl- rîḇ wə·ḵāl nā·ḡa‘ — WLC · 5

Then all the elders of the city… nearest the victim shall wash their hands by the stream over the heifer whose neck has been broken,

וְכֹ֗ל זִקְנֵי֙ הָעִ֣יר הַהִ֔וא הַקְּרֹבִ֖ים אֶל־ הֶחָלָ֑ל יִרְחֲצוּ֙ אֶת־ יְדֵיהֶ֔ם בַנָּֽחַל׃ עַל־ הָעֶגְלָ֖ה הָעֲרוּפָ֥ה wə·ḵōl ziq·nê hā·‘îr ha·hi·w haq·qə·rō·ḇîm ’el- he·ḥā·lāl yir·ḥă·ṣū ’eṯ- yə·ḏê·hem ḇan·nā·ḥal ‘al- hā·‘eḡ·lāh hā·‘ă·rū·p̄āh — WLC · 6

and they shall declare,… “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.

וְעָנ֖וּ וְאָמְר֑וּ יָדֵ֗ינוּ לֹ֤א שָׁפְכָה אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַדָּ֣ם לֹ֥א וְעֵינֵ֖ינוּ רָאֽוּ׃ wə·‘ā·nū wə·’ā·mə·rū yā·ḏê·nū lō šå̄·p̄ə·ḵå̄h ’eṯ- haz·zeh had·dām lō wə·‘ê·nê·nū rā·’ū — WLC · 7

Accept this atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, and do not hold the shedding of innocent blood against them…”… And the bloodshed will be atoned for.

כַּפֵּר֩ יְהוָ֔ה לְעַמְּךָ֨ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־ פָּדִ֙יתָ֙ וְאַל־ תִּתֵּן֙ נָקִ֔י דָּ֣ם בְּקֶ֖רֶב עַמְּךָ֣ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָהֶ֖ם הַדָּֽם׃ וְנִכַּפֵּ֥ר kap·pêr Yah·weh lə·‘am·mə·ḵā yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- pā·ḏî·ṯā wə·’al- tit·tên nā·qî dām bə·qe·reḇ ‘am·mə·ḵā yiś·rā·’êl lā·hem had·dām wə·nik·kap·pêr — WLC · 8

So you shall purge from among you the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

Marrying a Captive Woman

When you go to war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hand and you take them captive,

כִּֽי־ תֵצֵ֥א לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַל־ אֹיְבֶ֑יךָ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ וּנְתָנ֞וֹ בְּיָדֶ֖ךָ וְשָׁבִ֥יתָ שִׁבְיֽוֹ׃ kî- ṯê·ṣê lam·mil·ḥā·māh ‘al- ’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ū·nə·ṯā·nōw bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā wə·šā·ḇî·ṯā šiḇ·yōw — WLC · 10

if you see a beautiful… woman among [them], and you desire her and want to take her as your wife,

וְרָאִיתָ֙ יְפַת־ תֹּ֑אַר אֵ֖שֶׁת בַּשִּׁבְיָ֔ה וְחָשַׁקְתָּ֣ בָ֔הּ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ לְךָ֖ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ wə·rā·’î·ṯā yə·p̄aṯ- tō·’ar ’ê·šeṯ baš·šiḇ·yāh wə·ḥā·šaq·tā ḇāh wə·lā·qaḥ·tā lə·ḵā lə·’iš·šāh — WLC · 11

then you shall bring her into… your house. She must shave her head, trim her nails,

וַהֲבֵאתָ֖הּ אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ וְגִלְּחָה֙ אֶת־ רֹאשָׁ֔הּ וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה אֶת־ צִפָּרְנֶֽיהָ׃ wa·hă·ḇê·ṯāh ’el- tō·wḵ bê·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḡil·lə·ḥāh ’eṯ- rō·šāh wə·‘ā·śə·ṯāh ’eṯ- ṣip·pā·rə·ne·hā — WLC · 12

and put aside the clothing of her captivity. After she has lived in your house a full month… and mourned her father and mother, you may have relations with her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

וְהֵסִ֩ירָה֩ אֶת־ שִׂמְלַ֨ת שִׁבְיָ֜הּ מֵעָלֶ֗יהָ וְאַ֨חַר כֵּ֜ן וְיָֽשְׁבָה֙ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ יֶ֣רַח יָמִ֑ים וּבָֽכְתָ֛ה אֶת־ אָבִ֥יהָ וְאֶת־ אִמָּ֖הּ תָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ וּבְעַלְתָּ֔הּ וְהָיְתָ֥ה לְךָ֖ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ wə·hê·sî·rāh ’eṯ- śim·laṯ šiḇ·yāh mê·‘ā·le·hā wə·’a·ḥar kên wə·yā·šə·ḇāh bə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā ye·raḥ yā·mîm ū·ḇā·ḵə·ṯāh ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·hā wə·’eṯ- ’im·māh tā·ḇō·w ’ê·le·hā ū·ḇə·‘al·tāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ḵā lə·’iš·šāh — WLC · 13

And if you are not pleased with her, you are to let her go wherever she wishes. But you must not sell her… for money… or treat her as a slave since you have dishonored her.

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved, and [both]… bear him sons, but the unloved wife has the firstborn son,

כִּֽי־ לְאִ֜ישׁ תִהְיֶ֨יןָ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֗ים הָאַחַ֤ת אֲהוּבָה֙ וְהָאַחַ֣ת שְׂנוּאָ֔ה הָאֲהוּבָ֖ה וְהַשְּׂנוּאָ֑ה וְיָֽלְדוּ־ ל֣וֹ בָנִ֔ים לַשְּׂנִיאָֽה׃ וְהָיָ֛ה הַבְּכ֖וֹר הַבֵּ֥ן kî- lə·’îš ṯih·ye·nā šə·tê nā·šîm hā·’a·ḥaṯ ’ă·hū·ḇāh wə·hā·’a·ḥaṯ śə·nū·’āh hā·’ă·hū·ḇāh wə·haś·śə·nū·’āh wə·yā·lə·ḏū- lōw ḇā·nîm laś·śə·nî·’āh wə·hā·yāh hab·bə·ḵō·wr hab·bên — WLC · 15

when that man… assigns his inheritance to his sons he must not appoint the son of the beloved wife as the firstborn over [the son] of the unloved wife…

וְהָיָ֗ה בְּיוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁר־ יִהְיֶ֖ה ל֑וֹ הַנְחִיל֣וֹ אֶת־ בָּנָ֔יו אֵ֥ת לֹ֣א יוּכַ֗ל בֶּן־ הָ֣אֲהוּבָ֔ה עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י בֶן־ לְבַכֵּר֙ אֶת־ הַשְּׂנוּאָ֖ה הַבְּכֹֽר׃ wə·hā·yāh bə·yō·wm ’ă·šer- yih·yeh lōw han·ḥî·lōw ’eṯ- bā·nāw ’êṯ lō yū·ḵal ben- hā·’ă·hū·ḇāh ‘al- pə·nê ḇen- lə·ḇak·kêr ’eṯ- haś·śə·nū·’āh hab·bə·ḵōr — WLC · 16

Instead, he must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of his unloved wife, by giving him a double portion of all that he has For [that son] is the firstfruits of his [father’s] strength; the right of the firstborn belongs to him.

A Rebellious Son

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey… his father… and mother and does not listen to them when disciplined -,

his father and mother are to lay hold of him and bring him to the elders of his city, to the gate of his hometown,

and say to the elders -, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he does not obey us… He is a glutton and a drunkard.”

Then all the men of his city will stone him… to death. So you must purge the evil from among you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.

If a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is executed, and you hang his body on a tree,

you must not leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to bury… him that day, because anyone who is hung [on a tree] is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
