Chapter 27

The Altar on Mount Ebal

1

Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people…: “Keep all the commandments I am giving you today.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌

מֹשֶׁה֙ וְזִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־ וַיְצַ֤ו הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר שָׁמֹר֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָנֹכִ֛י מְצַוֶּ֥ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם הַיּֽוֹם׃ mō·šeh wə·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·ṣaw hā·‘ām lê·mōr šā·mōr ’eṯ- kāl- ham·miṣ·wāh ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ·ḵem hay·yō·wmWLC · 1

And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with plaster.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤃𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤃

וְהָיָ֗ה בַּיּוֹם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעַבְר֣וּ אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ אֶל־ הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֑ךְ וַהֲקֵמֹתָ֤ לְךָ֙ גְּדֹל֔וֹת אֲבָנִ֣ים וְשַׂדְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּשִּֽׂיד׃ wə·hā·yāh bay·yō·wm ’ă·šer ta·‘aḇ·rū ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lāḵ wa·hă·qê·mō·ṯā lə·ḵā gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ ’ă·ḇā·nîm wə·śaḏ·tā ’ō·ṯām baś·śîḏWLC · 2

Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter… the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers has promised you.

וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ן כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֛י הַזֹּ֖את הַתּוֹרָ֥ה אֶֽת־ בְּעָבְרֶ֑ךָ לְמַ֡עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ תָּבֹ֨א אֶל־ הָאָ֜רֶץ אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֣יךָ׀ נֹתֵ֣ן לְךָ֗ אֶ֣רֶץ זָבַ֤ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ לָֽךְ׃ דִּבֶּ֛ר wə·ḵā·ṯaḇ·tā ‘ă·lê·hen kāl- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hat·tō·w·rāh ’eṯ- bə·‘ā·ḇə·re·ḵā lə·ma·‘an ’ă·šer tā·ḇō ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ăšer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lə·ḵā ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇaš ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- ’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā lāḵ dib·berWLC · 3

And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today -, and you are to coat them with plaster.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤕𐤒𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤏𐤉𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤃𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤃

וְהָיָה֮ בְּעָבְרְכֶ֣ם אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ תָּקִ֜ימוּ אֶת־ הָאֵ֗לֶּה הָאֲבָנִ֣ים בְּהַ֣ר עֵיבָ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֜י מְצַוֶּ֥ה אֶתְכֶ֛ם הַיּ֖וֹם וְשַׂדְתָּ֥ אוֹתָ֖ם בַּשִּֽׂיד׃ wə·hā·yāh bə·‘ā·ḇə·rə·ḵem ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên tā·qî·mū ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·ḇā·nîm bə·har ‘ê·ḇāl ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ·ḵem hay·yō·wm wə·śaḏ·tā ’ō·w·ṯām baś·śîḏWLC · 4

Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.

𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤐 𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וּבָנִ֤יתָ שָּׁם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ מִזְבַּ֣ח אֲבָנִ֔ים לֹא־ תָנִ֥יף בַּרְזֶֽל׃ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם ū·ḇā·nî·ṯā šām miz·bê·aḥ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā miz·baḥ ’ă·ḇā·nîm lō- ṯā·nîp̄ bar·zel ‘ă·lê·hemWLC · 5

You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer upon it burnt offerings to the LORD your God.

𐤕𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊

תִּבְנֶ֔ה אֶת־ מִזְבַּ֖ח יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ שְׁלֵמוֹת֙ אֲבָנִ֤ים וְהַעֲלִ֤יתָ עָלָיו֙ עוֹלֹ֔ת לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ tiḇ·neh ’eṯ- miz·baḥ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā šə·lê·mō·wṯ ’ă·ḇā·nîm wə·ha·‘ă·lî·ṯā ‘ā·lāw ‘ō·w·lōṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵāWLC · 6

There you are to sacrifice [your] peace offerings, eating them and rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God.

𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊

שָּׁ֑ם וְזָבַחְתָּ֥ שְׁלָמִ֖ים וְאָכַ֣לְתָּ וְשָׂ֣מַחְתָּ֔ לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ šām wə·zā·ḇaḥ·tā šə·lā·mîm wə·’ā·ḵal·tā wə·śā·maḥ·tā lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵāWLC · 7

And you shall write distinctly… upon these stones all the words of this law.”

𐤅𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤁𐤎 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄

וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ בַּאֵ֥ר הֵיטֵֽב׃ס עַל־ הָאֲבָנִ֗ים אֶֽת־ כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֛י הַזֹּ֖את הַתּוֹרָ֥ה wə·ḵā·ṯaḇ·tā ba·’êr hê·ṭêḇ ‘al- hā·’ă·ḇā·nîm ’eṯ- kāl- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hat·tō·w·rāhWLC · 8

Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel:… “Be silent, O Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤊𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊

מֹשֶׁה֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶ֥ל כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הַסְכֵּ֤ת׀ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּשְׁמַע֙ הַזֶּה֙ הַיּ֤וֹם נִהְיֵ֣יתָֽ לְעָ֔ם לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ mō·šeh hal·wî·yim wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm way·ḏab·bêr ’el kāl- yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr has·kêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ū·šə·ma‘ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm nih·yê·ṯā lə·‘ām Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵāWLC · 9

You shall therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God and follow His commandments and statutes I am giving you today…”

𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤎

וְשָׁ֣מַעְתָּ֔ בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ אֶת־ מִצְוֺתָו֙ וְאֶת־ חֻקָּ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּֽוֹם׃ס wə·šā·ma‘·tā bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā ’eṯ- miṣ·w·ṯå̄w wə·’eṯ- ḥuq·qāw ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·wə·ḵā hay·yō·wmWLC · 10

Curses Pronounced from Ebal

On that… day Moses commanded the people:

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌

הַה֖וּא לֵאמֹֽר׃ בַּיּ֥וֹם מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־ וַיְצַ֤ו הָעָ֔ם ha·hū lê·mōr bay·yō·wm mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·ṣaw hā·‘āmWLC · 11

“When you have crossed the Jordan, these [tribes] shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓 𐤂𐤓𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍

בְּעָבְרְכֶ֖ם אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן אֵ֠לֶּה יַֽעַמְד֞וּ עַל־ הַ֣ר גְּרִזִ֔ים לְבָרֵ֤ךְ אֶת־ הָעָם֙ שִׁמְעוֹן֙ וְלֵוִ֣י וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר וְיוֹסֵ֥ף וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ bə·‘ā·ḇə·rə·ḵem ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên ’êl·leh ya·‘am·ḏū ‘al- har gə·ri·zîm lə·ḇā·rêḵ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām šim·‘ō·wn wə·lê·wî wî·hū·ḏāh wə·yiś·śā·š·ḵār wə·yō·w·sêp̄ ū·ḇin·yā·minWLC · 12

And these [tribes] shall stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤏𐤉𐤁𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤆𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤍 𐤃𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤋𐤉

וְאֵ֛לֶּה יַֽעַמְד֥וּ בְּהַ֣ר עֵיבָ֑ל עַל־ הַקְּלָלָ֖ה רְאוּבֵן֙ גָּ֣ד וְאָשֵׁ֔ר וּזְבוּלֻ֖ן דָּ֥ן וְנַפְתָּלִֽי׃ wə·’êl·leh ya·‘am·ḏū bə·har ‘ê·ḇāl ‘al- haq·qə·lā·lāh rə·’ū·ḇên gāḏ wə·’ā·šêr ū·zə·ḇū·lun dān wə·nap̄·tā·lîWLC · 13

Then the Levites shall proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite…:

𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤓𐤌𐤎 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וְעָנ֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם וְאָֽמְר֛וּ רָֽם׃ס ק֥וֹל אֶל־ כָּל־ אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל wə·‘ā·nū hal·wî·yim wə·’ā·mə·rū rām qō·wl ’el- kāl- ’îš yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 14

‘Cursed is the man who makes a carved idol or molten image— an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of a craftsman— and sets it up in secret.’ And {let} all the people… say, ‘Amen!’

𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤎𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤎

אָר֣וּר הָאִ֡ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַעֲשֶׂה֩ פֶ֨סֶל וּמַסֵּכָ֜ה תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְהוָ֗ה מַעֲשֵׂ֛ה יְדֵ֥י חָרָ֖שׁ וְשָׂ֣ם בַּסָּ֑תֶר כָל־ הָעָ֛ם וְאָמְר֖וּ וְעָנ֧וּ אָמֵֽן׃ס ’ā·rūr hā·’îš ’ă·šer ya·‘ă·śeh p̄e·sel ū·mas·sê·ḵāh tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ Yah·weh ma·‘ă·śêh yə·ḏê ḥā·rāš wə·śām bas·sā·ṯer ḵāl hā·‘ām wə·’ā·mə·rū wə·‘ā·nū ’ā·mênWLC · 15

‘Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

אָר֕וּר מַקְלֶ֥ה אָבִ֖יו וְאִמּ֑וֹ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם וְאָמַ֥ר אָמֵֽן׃ס ’ā·rūr maq·leh ’ā·ḇîw wə·’im·mōw kāl- hā·‘ām wə·’ā·mar ’ā·mênWLC · 16

‘Cursed is he who moves his neighbor’s boundary stone.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤎𐤉𐤂 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤎

אָר֕וּר מַסִּ֖יג רֵעֵ֑הוּ גְּב֣וּל כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם וְאָמַ֥ר אָמֵֽן׃ס ’ā·rūr mas·sîḡ rê·‘ê·hū gə·ḇūl kāl- hā·‘ām wə·’ā·mar ’ā·mênWLC · 17

‘Cursed is he who lets a blind man wander in the road.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤂𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤎

אָר֕וּר עִוֵּ֖ר מַשְׁגֶּ֥ה בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם וְאָמַ֥ר אָמֵֽן׃ס ’ā·rūr ‘iw·wêr maš·geh bad·dā·reḵ kāl- hā·‘ām wə·’ā·mar ’ā·mênWLC · 18

‘Cursed is he who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤂𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤎

‘Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he has violated his father’s marriage bed.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

‘Cursed is he who lies with any animal.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

‘Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

‘Cursed is he who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

‘Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person…’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’

אָרוּר֙ לֹקֵ֣חַ שֹׁ֔חַד לְהַכּ֥וֹת נָקִ֑י נֶ֖פֶשׁ דָּ֣ם כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם וְאָמַ֥ר אָמֵֽן׃ס ’ā·rūr lō·qê·aḥ šō·ḥaḏ lə·hak·kō·wṯ nā·qî ne·p̄eš dām kāl- hā·‘ām wə·’ā·mar ’ā·mênWLC · 25

‘Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law into practice -.’ And {let} all the people say, ‘Amen!’
