Chapter 32
The Song of Moses
1
Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤐𐤉
הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וַאֲדַבֵּ֑רָה וְתִשְׁמַ֥ע הָאָ֖רֶץ אִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃ ha·’ă·zî·nū haš·šā·ma·yim wa·’ă·ḏab·bê·rāh wə·ṯiš·ma‘ hā·’ā·reṣ ’im·rê- p̄î — WLC · 1

Let my teaching fall like rain and my speech settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grass, like showers on tender plants.

לִקְחִ֔י יַעֲרֹ֤ף כַּמָּטָר֙ אִמְרָתִ֑י תִּזַּ֥ל כַּטַּ֖ל כִּשְׂעִירִ֣ם עֲלֵי־ דֶ֔שֶׁא וְכִרְבִיבִ֖ים עֲלֵי־ עֵֽשֶׂב׃ liq·ḥî ya·‘ă·rōp̄ kam·mā·ṭār ’im·rā·ṯî tiz·zal kaṭ·ṭal kiś·‘î·rim ‘ă·lê- ḏe·še wə·ḵir·ḇî·ḇîm ‘ă·lê- ‘ê·śeḇ — WLC · 2

For I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Ascribe greatness to our God!
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅
כִּ֛י אֶקְרָ֑א שֵׁ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה הָב֥וּ גֹ֖דֶל לֵאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ kî ’eq·rā šêm Yah·weh hā·ḇū ḡō·ḏel lê·lō·hê·nū — WLC · 3

[He is] the Rock, His work… is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright [is] He.

הַצּוּר֙ פָּעֳל֔וֹ כִּ֥י תָּמִ֣ים כָל־ דְּרָכָ֖יו מִשְׁפָּ֑ט אֵ֤ל אֱמוּנָה֙ וְאֵ֣ין עָ֔וֶל צַדִּ֥יק וְיָשָׁ֖ר הֽוּא׃ haṣ·ṣūr pā·‘o·lōw kî tā·mîm ḵāl də·rā·ḵāw miš·pāṭ ’êl ’ĕ·mū·nāh wə·’ên ‘ā·wel ṣad·dîq wə·yā·šār hū — WLC · 4

[His people] have acted corruptly toward Him; the blemish [on them is] not that of His children, but of a perverse and crooked generation.

שִׁחֵ֥ת ל֛וֹ מוּמָ֑ם לֹ֖א בָּנָ֣יו עִקֵּ֖שׁ וּפְתַלְתֹּֽל׃ דּ֥וֹר ši·ḥêṯ lōw mū·mām lō bā·nāw ‘iq·qêš ū·p̄ə·ṯal·tōl dō·wr — WLC · 5

Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless… people? Is He not your Father and Creator? Has He not made you and established you?

זֹ֔את תִּגְמְלוּ־ הֲ־ לַיְהוָה֙ נָבָ֖ל וְלֹ֣א חָכָ֑ם עַ֥ם הוּא֙ הֲלוֹא־ אָבִ֣יךָ קָּנֶ֔ךָ ה֥וּא עָֽשְׂךָ֖ וַֽיְכֹנְנֶֽךָ׃ zōṯ tiḡ·mə·lū- hă- Yah·weh nā·ḇāl wə·lō ḥā·ḵām ‘am hū hă·lō·w- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā qā·ne·ḵā hū ‘ā·śə·ḵā way·ḵō·nə·ne·ḵā — WLC · 6

Remember the days of old; consider the years long past. Ask your father, and he will tell you, your elders, and they will inform you.

זְכֹר֙ יְמ֣וֹת עוֹלָ֔ם בִּ֖ינוּ שְׁנ֣וֹת דּוֹר־ וָד֑וֹר שְׁאַ֤ל אָבִ֙יךָ֙ וְיַגֵּ֔דְךָ זְקֵנֶ֖יךָ וְיֹ֥אמְרוּ לָֽךְ׃ zə·ḵōr yə·mō·wṯ ‘ō·w·lām bî·nū šə·nō·wṯ dō·wr- wā·ḏō·wr šə·’al ’ā·ḇî·ḵā wə·yag·gê·ḏə·ḵā zə·qê·ne·ḵā wə·yō·mə·rū lāḵ — WLC · 7

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.

עֶלְיוֹן֙ גּוֹיִ֔ם בְּהַנְחֵ֤ל בְּהַפְרִיד֖וֹ בְּנֵ֣י אָדָ֑ם יַצֵּב֙ גְּבֻלֹ֣ת עַמִּ֔ים לְמִסְפַּ֖ר בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ‘el·yō·wn gō·w·yim bə·han·ḥêl bə·hap̄·rî·ḏōw bə·nê ’ā·ḏām yaṣ·ṣêḇ gə·ḇu·lōṯ ‘am·mîm lə·mis·par bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 8

But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance.

כִּ֛י יְהֹוָ֖ה חֵ֥לֶק עַמּ֑וֹ יַעֲקֹ֖ב חֶ֥בֶל נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ kî Yah·weh ḥê·leq ‘am·mōw ya·‘ă·qōḇ ḥe·ḇel na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw — WLC · 9

He found him in a desert land, in a barren, howling wilderness; He surrounded him, He instructed him, He guarded him as the apple of His eye.

יִמְצָאֵ֙הוּ֙ מִדְבָּ֔ר בְּאֶ֣רֶץ וּבְתֹ֖הוּ יְלֵ֣ל יְשִׁמֹ֑ן יְסֹֽבְבֶ֙נְהוּ֙ יְב֣וֹנְנֵ֔הוּ יִצְּרֶ֖נְהוּ כְּאִישׁ֥וֹן עֵינֽוֹ׃ yim·ṣā·’ê·hū miḏ·bār bə·’e·reṣ ū·ḇə·ṯō·hū yə·lêl yə·ši·mōn yə·sō·ḇə·ḇen·hū yə·ḇō·wn·nê·hū yiṣ·ṣə·ren·hū kə·’î·šō·wn ‘ê·nōw — WLC · 10

As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, He spread His wings to catch them [and] carried them on His pinions.

כְּנֶ֙שֶׁר֙ יָעִ֣יר קִנּ֔וֹ יְרַחֵ֑ף עַל־ גּוֹזָלָ֖יו יִפְרֹ֤שׂ כְּנָפָיו֙ יִקָּחֵ֔הוּ יִשָּׂאֵ֖הוּ עַל־ אֶבְרָתֽוֹ׃ kə·ne·šer yā·‘îr qin·nōw yə·ra·ḥêp̄ ‘al- gō·w·zā·lāw yip̄·rōś kə·nā·p̄āw yiq·qā·ḥê·hū yiś·śā·’ê·hū ‘al- ’eḇ·rā·ṯōw — WLC · 11

The LORD alone led him, and no foreign god [was] with him.

יְהוָ֖ה בָּדָ֣ד יַנְחֶ֑נּוּ וְאֵ֥ין נֵכָֽר׃ אֵ֥ל עִמּ֖וֹ Yah·weh bā·ḏāḏ yan·ḥen·nū wə·’ên nê·ḵār ’êl ‘im·mōw — WLC · 12

He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from the flinty crag,

יַרְכִּבֵ֙הוּ֙ עַל־ בָּמוֹתֵי אָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּאכַ֖ל תְּנוּבֹ֣ת שָׂדָ֑י וַיֵּנִקֵ֤הֽוּ דְבַשׁ֙ מִסֶּ֔לַע וְשֶׁ֖מֶן מֵחַלְמִ֥ישׁ צֽוּר׃ yar·ki·ḇê·hū ‘al- bå̄·mō·ṯē ’ā·reṣ way·yō·ḵal tə·nū·ḇōṯ śā·ḏāy way·yê·ni·qê·hū ḏə·ḇaš mis·se·la‘ wə·še·men mê·ḥal·mîš ṣūr — WLC · 13

with curds from the herd and milk from the flock, with the fat of lambs, with rams from Bashan…, and goats, with the choicest grains of wheat. From the juice of the finest grapes you drank the wine.

חֶמְאַ֨ת בָּקָ֜ר וַחֲלֵ֣ב צֹ֗אן עִם־ חֵ֨לֶב כָּרִ֜ים וְאֵילִ֤ים בְּנֵֽי־ בָשָׁן֙ וְעַתּוּדִ֔ים עִם־ חֵ֖לֶב כִּלְי֣וֹת חִטָּ֑ה וְדַם־ עֵנָ֖ב תִּשְׁתֶּה־ חָֽמֶר׃ ḥem·’aṯ bā·qār wa·ḥă·lêḇ ṣōn ‘im- ḥê·leḇ kā·rîm wə·’ê·lîm bə·nê- ḇā·šān wə·‘at·tū·ḏîm ‘im- ḥê·leḇ kil·yō·wṯ ḥiṭ·ṭāh wə·ḏam- ‘ê·nāḇ tiš·teh- ḥā·mer — WLC · 14

But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked— becoming fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation.

יְשֻׁרוּן֙ וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ן וַיִּבְעָ֔ט שָׁמַ֖נְתָּ עָבִ֣יתָ כָּשִׂ֑יתָ וַיִּטֹּשׁ֙ אֱל֣וֹהַ עָשָׂ֔הוּ וַיְנַבֵּ֖ל צ֥וּר יְשֻׁעָתֽוֹ׃ yə·šu·rūn way·yiš·man way·yiḇ·‘āṭ šā·man·tā ‘ā·ḇî·ṯā kā·śî·ṯā way·yiṭ·ṭōš ’ĕ·lō·w·ha ‘ā·śā·hū way·nab·bêl ṣūr yə·šu·‘ā·ṯōw — WLC · 15

They provoked His jealousy with foreign gods; they enraged Him with abominations.
𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕
יַקְנִאֻ֖הוּ בְּזָרִ֑ים יַכְעִיסֻֽהוּ׃ בְּתוֹעֵבֹ֖ת yaq·ni·’u·hū bə·zā·rîm yaḵ·‘î·su·hū bə·ṯō·w·‘ê·ḇōṯ — WLC · 16
17
They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods they had not known, to newly arrived [gods]…, which your fathers did not fear.
𐤉𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌
יִזְבְּח֗וּ לַשֵּׁדִים֙ לֹ֣א אֱלֹ֔הַ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֹ֣א יְדָע֑וּם חֲדָשִׁים֙ מִקָּרֹ֣ב בָּ֔אוּ אֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ לֹ֥א שְׂעָר֖וּם yiz·bə·ḥū laš·šê·ḏîm lō ’ĕ·lō·ha ’ĕ·lō·hîm lō yə·ḏā·‘ūm ḥă·ḏā·šîm miq·qā·rōḇ bā·’ū ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem lō śə·‘ā·rūm — WLC · 17

You ignored the Rock who brought you forth; you forgot the God who gave you birth.

תֶּ֑שִׁי צ֥וּר יְלָדְךָ֖ וַתִּשְׁכַּ֖ח אֵ֥ל מְחֹלְלֶֽךָ׃ te·šî ṣūr yə·lā·ḏə·ḵā wat·tiš·kaḥ ’êl mə·ḥō·lə·le·ḵā — WLC · 18

When the LORD saw this, He rejected [them], provoked to anger by His sons and daughters.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤀𐤑 𐤌𐤊𐤏𐤎 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤅
יְהוָ֖ה וַיַּ֥רְא וַיִּנְאָ֑ץ מִכַּ֥עַס בָּנָ֖יו וּבְנֹתָֽיו׃ Yah·weh way·yar way·yin·’āṣ mik·ka·‘as bā·nāw ū·ḇə·nō·ṯāw — WLC · 19

He said: “I will hide My face from them; I will see what [will be] their end. For they are a perverse… generation— children vvv of unfaithfulness
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤌
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אַסְתִּ֤ירָה פָנַי֙ אֶרְאֶ֖ה מָ֣ה אַחֲרִיתָ֑ם כִּ֣י מֵהֶ֔ם תַּהְפֻּכֹת֙ הֵ֔מָּה ד֤וֹר בָּנִ֖ים לֹא־ אֵמֻ֥ן בָּֽם׃ way·yō·mer ’as·tî·rāh p̄ā·nay ’er·’eh māh ’a·ḥă·rî·ṯām kî mê·hem tah·pu·ḵōṯ hêm·māh ḏō·wr bā·nîm lō- ’ê·mun bām — WLC · 20

They have provoked My jealousy by [that which is] not God; they have enraged Me with their worthless idols. So I will make them jealous by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation without understanding.

הֵ֚ם קִנְא֣וּנִי בְלֹא־ אֵ֔ל כִּעֲס֖וּנִי בְּהַבְלֵיהֶ֑ם וַאֲנִי֙ אַקְנִיאֵ֣ם בְּלֹא־ עָ֔ם אַכְעִיסֵֽם׃ בְּג֥וֹי נָבָ֖ל hêm qin·’ū·nî ḇə·lō- ’êl ki·‘ă·sū·nî bə·haḇ·lê·hem wa·’ă·nî ’aq·nî·’êm bə·lō- ‘ām ’aḵ·‘î·sêm bə·ḡō·w nā·ḇāl — WLC · 21

For a fire has been kindled by My anger, and it burns to the depths of Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

כִּי־ אֵשׁ֙ קָדְחָ֣ה בְאַפִּ֔י וַתִּיקַ֖ד עַד־ תַּחְתִּ֑ית שְׁא֣וֹל וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶ֙רֶץ֙ וִֽיבֻלָ֔הּ וַתְּלַהֵ֖ט מוֹסְדֵ֥י הָרִֽים׃ kî- ’êš qā·ḏə·ḥāh ḇə·’ap·pî wat·tî·qaḏ ‘aḏ- taḥ·tîṯ šə·’ō·wl wat·tō·ḵal ’e·reṣ wî·ḇu·lāh wat·tə·la·hêṭ mō·ws·ḏê hā·rîm — WLC · 22

They will be wasted from hunger and ravaged by pestilence and bitter plague; I will send the fangs of wild beasts against them, with the venom of vipers that slither in the dust.

Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, terror will strike the young man… and the young woman, the infant and the gray-haired man.

For the LORD will vindicate His people and have compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one [remains], slave or free.

I will make My arrows drunk with blood, while My sword devours flesh— the blood of the slain and captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”

“Go up into the Abarim Range… to Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites… as their own possession.

And there on the mountain that you climb, you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people.

For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh… in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites… by failing to treat Me as holy in their… presence.
