Chapter 7
Drive Out the Nations
1
When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering… to possess, and He drives out before you many nations— the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤓𐤂𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤎𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤊
כִּ֤י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ יְבִֽיאֲךָ֙ אֶל־ הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֥ה בָא־ שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ וְנָשַׁ֣ל מִפָּנֶ֡יךָ רַבִּ֣ים׀ גּֽוֹיִם־ הַֽחִתִּי֩ וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֨י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֣י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֗י וְהַֽחִוִּי֙ וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י שִׁבְעָ֣ה גוֹיִ֔ם רַבִּ֥ים וַעֲצוּמִ֖ים מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yə·ḇî·’ă·ḵā ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh ḇā- šām·māh lə·riš·tāh wə·nā·šal mip·pā·ne·ḵā rab·bîm gō·w·yim- ha·ḥit·tî wə·hag·gir·gā·šî wə·hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî wə·ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî šiḇ·‘āh ḡō·w·yim rab·bîm wa·‘ă·ṣū·mîm mim·me·kā — WLC · 1

and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction… -. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.

יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ וּנְתָנָ֞ם לְפָנֶ֖יךָ וְהִכִּיתָ֑ם הַחֲרֵ֤ם תַּחֲרִים֙ אֹתָ֔ם תִכְרֹ֥ת לֹא־ בְּרִ֖ית לָהֶ֛ם וְלֹ֥א תְחָנֵּֽם׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ū·nə·ṯā·nām lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·hik·kî·ṯām ha·ḥă·rêm ta·ḥă·rîm ’ō·ṯām ṯiḵ·rōṯ lō- bə·rîṯ lā·hem wə·lō ṯə·ḥān·nêm — WLC · 2

Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,
𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤊
וְלֹ֥א תִתְחַתֵּ֖ן בָּ֑ם לֹא־ תִתֵּ֣ן בִּתְּךָ֙ לִבְנ֔וֹ לֹא־ תִקַּ֥ח וּבִתּ֖וֹ לִבְנֶֽךָ׃ wə·lō ṯiṯ·ḥat·tên bām lō- ṯit·tên bit·tə·ḵā liḇ·nōw lō- ṯiq·qaḥ ū·ḇit·tōw liḇ·ne·ḵā — WLC · 3

because they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤊 𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊
כִּֽי־ בִּנְךָ֙ יָסִ֤יר אֶת־ מֵֽאַחֲרַ֔י וְעָבְד֖וּ אֲחֵרִ֑ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים אַף־ יְהוָה֙ וְחָרָ֤ה בָּכֶ֔ם מַהֵֽר׃ וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ֖ kî- bin·ḵā yā·sîr ’eṯ- mê·’a·ḥă·ray wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏū ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ap̄- Yah·weh wə·ḥā·rāh bā·ḵem ma·hêr wə·hiš·mî·ḏə·ḵā — WLC · 4

Instead…, this is what you are to do to them:… tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.

כִּֽי־ אִם־ כֹּ֤ה תַעֲשׂוּ֙ לָהֶ֔ם תִּתֹּ֔צוּ מִזְבְּחֹתֵיהֶ֣ם תְּשַׁבֵּ֑רוּ וּמַצֵּבֹתָ֖ם תְּגַדֵּע֔וּן וַאֲשֵֽׁירֵהֶם֙ תִּשְׂרְפ֥וּן וּפְסִילֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ kî- ’im- kōh ṯa·‘ă·śū lā·hem tit·tō·ṣū miz·bə·ḥō·ṯê·hem tə·šab·bê·rū ū·maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·ṯām tə·ḡad·dê·‘ūn wa·’ă·šê·rê·hem tiś·rə·p̄ūn ū·p̄ə·sî·lê·hem bā·’êš — WLC · 5

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.

כִּ֣י אַתָּ֔ה עַ֤ם קָדוֹשׁ֙ לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ בְּךָ֞ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ בָּחַ֣ר׀ לִהְי֥וֹת לְעַ֣ם לוֹ֙ סְגֻלָּ֔ה מִכֹּל֙ הָֽעַמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ס kî ’at·tāh ‘am qā·ḏō·wōš Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bə·ḵā Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bā·ḥar lih·yō·wṯ lə·‘am lōw sə·ḡul·lāh mik·kōl hā·‘am·mîm ’ă·šer ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 6

The LORD did not set His affection on you [and] choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

יְהוָ֛ה לֹ֣א חָשַׁ֧ק בָּכֶ֖ם וַיִּבְחַ֣ר בָּכֶ֑ם מֵֽרֻבְּכֶ֞ם מִכָּל־ הָֽעַמִּ֗ים כִּֽי־ אַתֶּ֥ם הַמְעַ֖ט מִכָּל־ הָעַמִּֽים׃ Yah·weh lō ḥā·šaq bā·ḵem way·yiḇ·ḥar bā·ḵem mê·rub·bə·ḵem mik·kāl hā·‘am·mîm kî- ’at·tem ham·‘aṭ mik·kāl hā·‘am·mîm — WLC · 7

But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

כִּי֩ יְהוָ֜ה מֵֽאַהֲבַ֨ת אֶתְכֶ֗ם וּמִשָּׁמְר֤וּ אֶת־ הַשְּׁבֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִשְׁבַּע֙ לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם הוֹצִ֧יא חֲזָקָ֑ה בְּיָ֣ד וַֽיִּפְדְּךָ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית עֲבָדִ֔ים מִיַּ֖ד פַּרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ kî Yah·weh mê·’a·hă·ḇaṯ ’eṯ·ḵem ū·miš·šå̄·mə·rū ’eṯ- haš·šə·ḇu·‘āh ’ă·šer niš·ba‘ la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem Yah·weh ’eṯ·ḵem hō·w·ṣî ḥă·zā·qāh bə·yāḏ way·yip̄·də·ḵā mib·bêṯ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm mî·yaḏ par·‘ōh me·leḵ- miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 8

Know therefore that the LORD your God… is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤅
וְיָ֣דַעְתָּ֔ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ ה֣וּא הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים הַֽנֶּאֱמָ֔ן הָאֵל֙ שֹׁמֵ֧ר הַבְּרִ֣ית וְהַחֶ֗סֶד לְאֶ֥לֶף דּֽוֹר׃ לְאֹהֲבָ֛יו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֹתוֹ wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā hū hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm han·ne·’ĕ·mān hā·’êl šō·mêr hab·bə·rîṯ wə·ha·ḥe·seḏ lə·’e·lep̄ dō·wr lə·’ō·hă·ḇāw ū·lə·šō·mə·rê miṣ·wō·ṯō — WLC · 9

But those who hate Him He repays to their faces with destruction; He will not hesitate to repay to his face the one who hates Him.

לְשֹׂנְאָ֛יו וּמְשַׁלֵּ֧ם אֶל־ פָּנָ֖יו לְהַאֲבִיד֑וֹ לֹ֤א יְאַחֵר֙ יְשַׁלֶּם־ אֶל־ פָּנָ֖יו לֽוֹ׃ לְשֹׂ֣נְא֔וֹ lə·śō·nə·’āw ū·mə·šal·lêm ’el- pā·nāw lə·ha·’ă·ḇî·ḏōw lō yə·’a·ḥêr yə·šal·lem- ’el- pā·nāw lōw lə·śō·nə·’ōw — WLC · 10

So keep the commandments and statutes and ordinances that I am giving you to follow this day.

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֨ אֶת־ הַמִּצְוָ֜ה וְאֶת־ הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים וְאֶת־ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ לַעֲשׂוֹתָֽם׃פ הַיּ֖וֹם wə·šā·mar·tā ’eṯ- ham·miṣ·wāh wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·’eṯ- ham·miš·pā·ṭîm ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·wə·ḵā la·‘ă·śō·w·ṯām hay·yō·wm — WLC · 11
The Promises of God

- If you listen to these ordinances and keep them carefully then the LORD your God will keep His covenant and the loving devotion that He swore to your fathers.

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ עֵ֣קֶב תִּשְׁמְע֗וּן אֵ֤ת הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים֙ וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ לְךָ֗ אֶֽת־ וְשָׁמַר֩ הַבְּרִית֙ וְאֶת־ הַחֶ֔סֶד אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ wə·hā·yāh ‘ê·qeḇ tiš·mə·‘ūn ’êṯ hā·’êl·leh ham·miš·pā·ṭîm ū·šə·mar·tem wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ’ō·ṯām Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lə·ḵā ’eṯ- wə·šā·mar hab·bə·rîṯ wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥe·seḏ ’ă·šer niš·ba‘ la·’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 12

He will love you and bless you and multiply you. He will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your land— your grain, new wine, and oil, the young of your herds and the lambs of your flocks— in the land that He swore to your fathers to give you.

וַאֲהֵ֣בְךָ֔ וּבֵרַכְךָ֖ וְהִרְבֶּ֑ךָ וּבֵרַ֣ךְ פְּרִֽי־ בִטְנְךָ֣ וּפְרִֽי־ אַ֠דְמָתֶךָ דְּגָ֨נְךָ֜ וְתִֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ וְיִצְהָרֶ֗ךָ שְׁגַר־ אֲלָפֶ֙יךָ֙ וְעַשְׁתְּרֹ֣ת צֹאנֶ֔ךָ עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֥ע לַאֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ לָ֥תֶת לָֽךְ׃ wa·’ă·hê·ḇə·ḵā ū·ḇê·raḵ·ḵā wə·hir·be·ḵā ū·ḇê·raḵ pə·rî- ḇiṭ·nə·ḵā ū·p̄ə·rî- ’aḏ·mā·ṯe·ḵā də·ḡā·nə·ḵā wə·ṯî·rō·šə·ḵā wə·yiṣ·hā·re·ḵā šə·ḡar- ’ă·lā·p̄e·ḵā wə·‘aš·tə·rōṯ ṣō·ne·ḵā ‘al hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer- niš·ba‘ la·’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā lā·ṯeṯ lāḵ — WLC · 13

You will be blessed above all peoples; among you there will be no barren man or woman or livestock.

תִּֽהְיֶ֖ה בָּר֥וּךְ מִכָּל־ הָעַמִּ֑ים בְךָ֛ יִהְיֶ֥ה לֹא־ עָקָ֥ר וַֽעֲקָרָ֖ה וּבִבְהֶמְתֶּֽךָ׃ tih·yeh bā·rūḵ mik·kāl hā·‘am·mîm ḇə·ḵā yih·yeh lō- ‘ā·qār wa·‘ă·qā·rāh ū·ḇiḇ·hem·te·ḵā — WLC · 14

And the LORD will remove from you all sickness. He will not lay upon you any of the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but He will inflict them on all who hate you.

You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God will deliver to you. Do not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

But do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember… what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt:

the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear…

Moreover, the LORD your God will send the hornet against them until even the survivors hiding from you have perished.

Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who [is] among you, [is] a great and awesome God.

The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be enabled to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals would multiply around you.

But the LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.

He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you…; you will annihilate them -.

You must burn up… the images of their gods; do not covet the silver and gold [that is] on them or take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it; for it is detestable to the LORD your God.

And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly detest… and abhor it,… because it is set apart for destruction.
