Rahab Welcomes the Spies
1
Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two vvv spies from Shittim, saying, “Go, inspect the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house vvv of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

And it was reported to the king of Jericho…: “Behold, some men vvv of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”

So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.

הָֽאִשָּׁ֛ה אֶת־ וַתִּקַּ֧ח שְׁנֵ֥י הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַֽתִּצְפְּנ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר׀ כֵּ֗ן הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים בָּ֤אוּ אֵלַי֙ וְלֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי מֵאַ֥יִן הֵֽמָּה׃ hā·’iš·šāh ’eṯ- wat·tiq·qaḥ šə·nê hā·’ă·nā·šîm wat·tiṣ·pə·nōw wat·tō·mer kên hā·’ă·nā·šîm bā·’ū ’ê·lay wə·lō yā·ḏa‘·tî mê·’a·yin hêm·māh — WLC · 4

At dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”

בַּחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ הַשַּׁ֜עַר וַיְהִ֨י לִסְגּ֗וֹר וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים יָצָ֔אוּ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי אָ֥נָה הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים הָלְכ֖וּ רִדְפ֥וּ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם מַהֵ֛ר כִּ֥י תַשִּׂיגֽוּם׃ ba·ḥō·šeḵ haš·ša·‘ar way·hî lis·gō·wr wə·hā·’ă·nā·šîm yā·ṣā·’ū lō yā·ḏa‘·tî ’ā·nāh hā·’ă·nā·šîm hā·lə·ḵū riḏ·p̄ū ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ma·hêr kî ṯaś·śî·ḡūm — WLC · 5

(But [Rahab] had taken them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax that she had laid out vvv [there].)

וְהִ֖יא הֶעֱלָ֣תַם הַגָּ֑גָה וַֽתִּטְמְנֵם֙ הָעֵ֔ץ בְּפִשְׁתֵּ֣י הָעֲרֻכ֥וֹת לָ֖הּ עַל־ הַגָּֽג׃ wə·hî he·‘ĕ·lā·ṯam hag·gā·ḡāh wat·tiṭ·mə·nêm hā·‘êṣ bə·p̄iš·tê hā·‘ă·ru·ḵō·wṯ lāh ‘al- hag·gāḡ — WLC · 6

So the [king’s] men set out in pursuit [of the spies] along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone out,… the gate was shut…

The Promise to Rahab

Before [the spies] lay down for the night, [Rahab] went up on… the roof

טֶ֣רֶם וְהֵ֖מָּה יִשְׁכָּב֑וּן וְהִ֛יא עָלְתָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־ הַגָּֽג׃ ṭe·rem wə·hêm·māh yiš·kā·ḇūn wə·hî ‘ā·lə·ṯāh ‘ă·lê·hem ‘al- hag·gāḡ — WLC · 8

and said to them…, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֛ה נָתַ֧ן לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וְכִֽי־ אֵֽימַתְכֶם֙ נָפְלָ֤ה עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְכִ֥י כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ נָמֹ֛גוּ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃ wat·tō·mer ’el- hā·’ă·nā·šîm yā·ḏa‘·tî kî- Yah·weh nā·ṯan lā·ḵem ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·ḵî- ’ê·maṯ·ḵem nā·p̄ə·lāh ‘ā·lê·nū wə·ḵî kāl- yō·šə·ḇê hā·’ā·reṣ nā·mō·ḡū mip·pə·nê·ḵem — WLC · 9

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction -.

כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ אֵ֠ת אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ הוֹבִ֨ישׁ מֵ֤י סוּף֙ יַם־ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם בְּצֵאתְכֶ֖ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֡ם לְסִיחֹ֣ן וּלְע֔וֹג אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִשְׁנֵי֩ מַלְכֵ֨י הָאֱמֹרִ֜י בְּעֵ֤בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶחֱרַמְתֶּ֖ם אוֹתָֽם׃ kî šā·ma‘·nū ’êṯ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’eṯ- hō·w·ḇîš mê sūp̄ yam- mip·pə·nê·ḵem bə·ṣê·ṯə·ḵem mim·miṣ·rā·yim wa·’ă·šer ‘ă·śî·ṯem lə·sî·ḥōn ū·lə·‘ō·wḡ ’ă·šer liš·nê mal·ḵê hā·’ĕ·mō·rî bə·‘ê·ḇer hay·yar·dên ’ă·šer he·ḥĕ·ram·tem ’ō·w·ṯām — WLC · 10

When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed… because of you, for the LORD your God… is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.

וַנִּשְׁמַע֙ לְבָבֵ֔נוּ וַיִּמַּ֣ס בְּאִ֖ישׁ ר֛וּחַ וְלֹא־ קָ֨מָה ע֥וֹד מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם ה֤וּא אֱלֹהִים֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם מִמַּ֔עַל וְעַל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ מִתָּֽחַת׃ wan·niš·ma‘ lə·ḇā·ḇê·nū way·yim·mas bə·’îš rū·aḥ wə·lō- qā·māh ‘ō·wḏ mip·pə·nê·ḵem kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem hū ’ĕ·lō·hîm baš·šā·ma·yim mim·ma·‘al wə·‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ mit·tā·ḥaṯ — WLC · 11

Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD that you will indeed show kindness to my family…, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign

וְעַתָּ֗ה נָ֥א הִשָּֽׁבְעוּ־ לִי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה אַתֶּ֜ם גַּם־ וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם חֶ֔סֶד עִם־ בֵּ֤ית אָבִי֙ כִּי־ עָשִׂ֥יתִי חָ֑סֶד עִמָּכֶ֖ם וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם לִ֖י אֱמֶֽת׃ א֥וֹת wə·‘at·tāh nā hiš·šā·ḇə·‘ū- lî Yah·weh ’at·tem gam- wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ḥe·seḏ ‘im- bêṯ ’ā·ḇî kî- ‘ā·śî·ṯî ḥā·seḏ ‘im·mā·ḵem ū·nə·ṯat·tem lî ’ĕ·meṯ ’ō·wṯ — WLC · 12

that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will deliver us from death.”

וְהַחֲיִתֶ֞ם אֶת־ אָבִ֣י וְאֶת־ אִמִּ֗י וְאֶת־ אַחַי֙ וְאֶת־ אַחוֹתַי וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־ נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ מִמָּֽוֶת׃ wə·ha·ḥă·yi·ṯem ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî wə·’eṯ- ’im·mî wə·’eṯ- ’a·ḥay wə·’eṯ- ʾa·ḥō·ṯay wə·’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer lā·hem wə·hiṣ·ṣal·tem ’eṯ- nap̄·šō·ṯê·nū mim·mā·weṯ — WLC · 13

“Our lives for your lives!” the men agreed “If you do not report our mission,… we will show you kindness and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land.”

נַפְשֵׁ֤נוּ תַחְתֵּיכֶם֙ לָמ֔וּת הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ לָ֣הּ אִ֚ם לֹ֣א תַגִּ֔ידוּ אֶת־ דְּבָרֵ֖נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיָ֗ה וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ עִמָּ֖ךְ חֶ֥סֶד וֶאֱמֶֽת׃ יְהוָ֥ה בְּתֵת־ לָ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ nap̄·šê·nū ṯaḥ·tê·ḵem lā·mūṯ hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yō·mə·rū lāh ’im lō ṯag·gî·ḏū ’eṯ- də·ḇā·rê·nū zeh wə·hā·yāh wə·‘ā·śî·nū ‘im·māḵ ḥe·seḏ we·’ĕ·meṯ Yah·weh bə·ṯêṯ- lā·nū ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 14

Then [Rahab] let them down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the wall of the city -.

“Go to the hill country,” she said “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”

The men said to her, “We will not be bound by this oath you made us swear

unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord… in the window through which you let us down and unless you have brought… your father and mother and brothers and all vvv your family into your house.

- If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood [will be] on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on anyone with you in the house…, his blood will be on our heads.

“Let it be as you say…,” she replied, and she sent them away. And when they had gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

- So the [spies] went out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.

Then the [two] men started back,… came down from the hill country, and crossed [the river]. So they came to Joshua son of Nun and reported… all that had happened to them.

“The LORD has surely delivered the entire land into our hands,” they said to Joshua. “Indeed, all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of us.”
