Chapter 24

Joshua Reviews Israel’s History

1

Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham… and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods.

יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ כָּל־ הָעָ֗ם כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֮ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אָמַ֣ר מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ תֶּ֛רַח אֲבִ֥י אַבְרָהָ֖ם וַאֲבִ֣י נָח֑וֹר יָשְׁב֤וּ בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֗ר וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֲחֵרִֽים׃ אֱלֹהִ֥ים yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yō·mer ’el- kāl- hā·‘ām kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar mê·‘ō·w·lām ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem te·raḥ ’ă·ḇî ’aḇ·rā·hām wa·’ă·ḇî nā·ḥō·wr yā·šə·ḇū bə·‘ê·ḇer han·nā·hār way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 2

But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,

וָ֠אֶקַּח אֶת־ אֲבִיכֶ֤ם אֶת־ אַבְרָהָם֙ מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֔ר וָאוֹלֵ֥ךְ אוֹת֖וֹ בְּכָל־ אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וָאֶרֶב אֶת־ זַרְע֔וֹ וָֽאֶתֶּן־ ל֖וֹ אֶת־ יִצְחָֽק׃ wā·’eq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇî·ḵem ’eṯ- ’aḇ·rā·hām mê·‘ê·ḇer han·nā·hār wā·’ō·w·lêḵ ’ō·w·ṯōw bə·ḵāl ’e·reṣ kə·nā·‘an wå̄·ʾɛ·rɛḇ ’eṯ- zar·‘ōw wā·’et·ten- lōw ’eṯ- yiṣ·ḥāqWLC · 3

and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau Mount Seir to possess -, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and afterward I brought you out -.

וָאֶשְׁלַ֞ח אֶת־ מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאֶֽת־ אַהֲרֹן֙ וָאֶגֹּ֣ף אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי בְּקִרְבּ֑וֹ וְאַחַ֖ר הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אֶתְכֶֽם׃ wā·’eš·laḥ ’eṯ- mō·šeh wə·’eṯ- ’a·hă·rōn wā·’eg·gōp̄ ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî bə·qir·bōw wə·’a·ḥar hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 5

When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red Sea, the Egyptians pursued… [them] with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea…

וָֽאוֹצִ֤יא אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ אֶת־ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וַתָּבֹ֖אוּ הַיָּ֑מָּה מִצְרַ֜יִם וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ אַחֲרֵ֧י אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם בְּרֶ֥כֶב וּבְפָרָשִׁ֖ים יַם־ סֽוּף׃ wā·’ō·w·ṣî ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ’eṯ- mim·miṣ·ra·yim wat·tā·ḇō·’ū hay·yām·māh miṣ·ra·yim way·yir·də·p̄ū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem bə·re·ḵeḇ ū·ḇə·p̄ā·rā·šîm yam- sūp̄WLC · 6

So [your fathers] cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between… you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֗ה וַיָּ֨שֶׂם מַֽאֲפֵ֜ל בֵּינֵיכֶ֣ם׀ וּבֵ֣ין הַמִּצְרִ֗ים עָלָ֤יו אֶת־ וַיָּבֵ֨א הַיָּם֙ וַיְכַסֵּ֔הוּ עֵינֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת וַתִּרְאֶ֙ינָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂ֖יתִי בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וַתֵּשְׁב֥וּ בַמִּדְבָּ֖ר רַבִּֽים׃ יָמִ֥ים way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh way·yā·śem ma·’ă·p̄êl bê·nê·ḵem ū·ḇên ham·miṣ·rîm ‘ā·lāw ’eṯ- way·yā·ḇê hay·yām way·ḵas·sê·hū ‘ê·nê·ḵem ’êṯ wat·tir·’e·nāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śî·ṯî bə·miṣ·rā·yim wat·tê·šə·ḇū ḇam·miḏ·bār rab·bîm yā·mîmWLC · 7

Later, I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.

וָאָבִאָה אֶתְכֶ֗ם אֶל־ אֶ֤רֶץ הָאֱמֹרִי֙ הַיּוֹשֵׁב֙ בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ אִתְּכֶ֑ם וָאֶתֵּ֨ן אוֹתָ֤ם בְּיֶדְכֶם֙ וַתִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־ אַרְצָ֔ם וָאַשְׁמִידֵ֖ם מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃ wå̄·ʾå̄·ḇi·ʾå̄h ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- ’e·reṣ hā·’ĕ·mō·rî hay·yō·wō·šêḇ bə·‘ê·ḇer hay·yar·dên way·yil·lā·ḥă·mū ’it·tə·ḵem wā·’et·tên ’ō·w·ṯām bə·yeḏ·ḵem wat·tî·rə·šū ’eṯ- ’ar·ṣām wā·’aš·mî·ḏêm mip·pə·nê·ḵemWLC · 8

Then Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent… for Balaam son of Beor to curse you -,

בָּלָ֤ק בֶּן־ צִפּוֹר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מוֹאָ֔ב וַיָּ֨קָם וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח וַיִּקְרָ֛א לְבִלְעָ֥ם בֶּן־ בְּע֖וֹר לְקַלֵּ֥ל אֶתְכֶֽם׃ bā·lāq ben- ṣip·pō·wr me·leḵ mō·w·’āḇ way·yā·qām way·yil·lā·ḥem bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·laḥ way·yiq·rā lə·ḇil·‘ām ben- bə·‘ō·wr lə·qal·lêl ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 9

but I would not listen to Balaam. So he blessed you again and again…, and I delivered you from his hand.

אָבִ֖יתִי וְלֹ֥א לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ לְבִלְעָ֑ם וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ בָּרוֹךְ֙ אֶתְכֶ֔ם וָאַצִּ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ ’ā·ḇî·ṯî wə·lō liš·mō·a‘ lə·ḇil·‘ām way·ḇā·reḵ bā·rō·wḵ ’eṯ·ḵem wā·’aṣ·ṣil ’eṯ·ḵem mî·yā·ḏōwWLC · 10

After this, you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The people of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hand.

וַתַּעַבְר֣וּ אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּן֮ וַתָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־ יְרִיחוֹ֒ בַּעֲלֵֽי־ יְ֠רִיחוֹ וַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ בָכֶ֣ם הָֽאֱמֹרִ֨י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֜י וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֗י וְהַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֔י הַֽחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י וָאֶתֵּ֥ן אוֹתָ֖ם בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ wat·ta·‘aḇ·rū ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên wat·tā·ḇō·’ū ’el- yə·rî·ḥōw ba·‘ă·lê- yə·rî·ḥōw way·yil·lā·ḥă·mū ḇā·ḵem hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·ha·ḥit·tî wə·hag·gir·gā·šî ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî wā·’et·tên ’ō·w·ṯām bə·yeḏ·ḵemWLC · 11

I sent the hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you, [but] not by your own sword… or bow.

וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח הַצִּרְעָ֔ה לִפְנֵיכֶם֙ אֶת־ וַתְּגָ֤רֶשׁ אוֹתָם֙ שְׁנֵ֖י הָאֱמֹרִ֑י מַלְכֵ֣י מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם לֹ֥א בְחַרְבְּךָ֖ וְלֹ֥א בְקַשְׁתֶּֽךָ׃ wā·’eš·laḥ haṣ·ṣir·‘āh lip̄·nê·ḵem ’eṯ- wat·tə·ḡā·reš ’ō·w·ṯām šə·nê hā·’ĕ·mō·rî mal·ḵê mip·pə·nê·ḵem lō ḇə·ḥar·bə·ḵā wə·lō ḇə·qaš·te·ḵāWLC · 12

So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’

וָאֶתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֜ם אֶ֣רֶץ׀ אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא־ יָגַ֣עְתָּ בָּ֗הּ וְעָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־ בְנִיתֶ֔ם וַתֵּשְׁב֖וּ בָּהֶ֑ם אַתֶּ֖ם אֹכְלִֽים׃ כְּרָמִ֤ים וְזֵיתִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ נְטַעְתֶּ֔ם wā·’et·tên lā·ḵem ’e·reṣ ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḡa‘·tā bāh wə·‘ā·rîm ’ă·šer lō- ḇə·nî·ṯem wat·tê·šə·ḇū bā·hem ’at·tem ’ō·ḵə·lîm kə·rā·mîm wə·zê·ṯîm ’ă·šer lō- nə·ṭa‘·temWLC · 13

Choose Whom You Will Serve

Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”

The people… replied, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!

For the LORD our God… brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled…

And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”

But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your rebellion or your sins.

If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring disaster on you and consume you, even after He has been good to you.”

כִּ֤י תַֽעַזְבוּ֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֖ם נֵכָ֑ר אֱלֹהֵ֣י וְשָׁ֨ב וְהֵרַ֤ע לָכֶם֙ וְכִלָּ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם אַחֲרֵ֖י אֲשֶׁר־ הֵיטִ֥יב לָכֶֽם׃ kî ṯa·‘az·ḇū ’eṯ- Yah·weh wa·‘ă·ḇaḏ·tem nê·ḵār ’ĕ·lō·hê wə·šāḇ wə·hê·ra‘ lā·ḵem wə·ḵil·lāh ’eṯ·ḵem ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·šer- hê·ṭîḇ lā·ḵemWLC · 20

“No!”… replied the people… -. “We will serve the LORD!”

לֹ֕א כִּ֥י אֶת־ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הָעָ֖ם אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ נַעֲבֹֽד׃ יְהוָ֖ה lō kî ’eṯ- way·yō·mer hā·‘ām ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ na·‘ă·ḇōḏ Yah·wehWLC · 21

Then Joshua… told [them], “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.

“Now, therefore,” [he said], “get rid of the foreign gods among you and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

וְעַתָּ֕ה הָסִ֛ירוּ אֶת־ הַנֵּכָ֖ר אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וְהַטּוּ֙ אֶת־ לְבַבְכֶ֔ם אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·‘at·tāh hā·sî·rū ’eṯ- han·nê·ḵār ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·šer bə·qir·bə·ḵem wə·haṭ·ṭū ’eṯ- lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 23

So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”

הָעָ֖ם וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ אֶת־ נַעֲבֹ֔ד יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ נִשְׁמָֽע׃ וּבְקוֹל֖וֹ hā·‘ām way·yō·mə·rū ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’eṯ- na·‘ă·ḇōḏ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū niš·mā‘ ū·ḇə·qō·w·lōwWLC · 24

On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he established for them a statute and ordinance.

הַה֑וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת בְּרִ֛ית לָעָ֖ם בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ וַיָּ֥שֶׂם ל֛וֹ חֹ֥ק וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט ha·hū bay·yō·wm yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yiḵ·rōṯ bə·rîṯ lā·‘ām biš·ḵem way·yā·śem lōw ḥōq ū·miš·pāṭWLC · 25

Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that [was] near the sanctuary of the LORD.

And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”

Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.

וַיְהִ֗י אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ בִּן־ נ֖וּן עֶ֣בֶד יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּ֛מָת בֶּן־ שָׁנִֽים׃ מֵאָ֥ה וָעֶ֖שֶׂר way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūn ‘e·ḇeḏ Yah·weh way·yā·māṯ ben- šā·nîm mê·’āh wā·‘e·śerWLC · 29

And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, vvv at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua [and]… of the elders who outlived… [him] and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.

And the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites… had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the plot of land that Jacob… had purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.

Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
