Twelve Stones from the Jordan
1
- When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua…,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

“Choose twelve… men from among the people, one… from each tribe,
𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤈
קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר אֲנָשִׁ֑ים אִישׁ־ מִן־ הָעָ֔ם אֶחָ֥ד אִישׁ־ אֶחָ֖ד מִשָּֽׁבֶט׃ qə·ḥū lā·ḵem šə·nêm ‘ā·śār ’ă·nā·šîm ’îš- min- hā·‘ām ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- ’e·ḥāḏ miš·šā·ḇeṭ — WLC · 2

and command them: - ‘Take up for yourselves twelve… stones from the middle of the Jordan… where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you spend the night.’”

So Joshua… summoned the twelve… men he had appointed from the Israelites…, one… from [each] tribe,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤈
יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ אֶל־ וַיִּקְרָ֣א שְׁנֵ֤ים הֶֽעָשָׂר֙ אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵכִ֖ין מִבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶחָ֥ד אִישׁ־ אֶחָ֖ד אִישׁ־ מִשָּֽׁבֶט׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’el- way·yiq·rā šə·nêm he·‘ā·śār ’îš ’ă·šer hê·ḵîn mib·bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- miš·šā·ḇeṭ — WLC · 4

and said to them,… “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes vvv of Israel,

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ עִ֠בְרוּ לִפְנֵ֨י אֲר֧וֹן יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן אִ֣ישׁ וְהָרִ֨ימוּ לָכֶ֜ם אַחַת֙ אֶ֤בֶן עַל־ שִׁכְמ֔וֹ לְמִסְפַּ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֥י בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ way·yō·mer lā·hem yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ‘iḇ·rū lip̄·nê ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ’el- tō·wḵ hay·yar·dên ’îš wə·hā·rî·mū lā·ḵem ’a·ḥaṯ ’e·ḇen ‘al- šiḵ·mōw lə·mis·par šiḇ·ṭê ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 5

to serve as a sign among you. In the future,… when your children ask, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤌
לְמַ֗עַן זֹ֥את תִּֽהְיֶ֛ה א֖וֹת בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם מָחָר֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כִּֽי־ בְּנֵיכֶ֤ם יִשְׁאָל֨וּן מָ֛ה הָאֵ֖לֶּה הָאֲבָנִ֥ים לָכֶֽם׃ lə·ma·‘an zōṯ tih·yeh ’ō·wṯ bə·qir·bə·ḵem mā·ḥār lê·mōr kî- bə·nê·ḵem yiš·’ā·lūn māh hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·ḇā·nîm lā·ḵem — WLC · 6

you are to tell them -, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, [the] waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a memorial to the Israelites… vvv forever.”

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם לָהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֵימֵ֤י הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ נִכְרְת֜וּ מִפְּנֵי֙ אֲר֣וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָ֔ה בְּעָבְרוֹ֙ בַּיַּרְדֵּ֔ן הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן מֵ֣י נִכְרְת֖וּ הָאֵ֧לֶּה הָאֲבָנִ֨ים וְ֠הָיוּ לְזִכָּר֛וֹן לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ wa·’ă·mar·tem lā·hem ’ă·šer mê·mê hay·yar·dên niḵ·rə·ṯū mip·pə·nê ’ă·rō·wn bə·rîṯ- Yah·weh bə·‘ā·ḇə·rōw bay·yar·dên hay·yar·dên mê niḵ·rə·ṯū hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·ḇā·nîm wə·hā·yū lə·zik·kā·rō·wn liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 7

Thus the Israelites… did… as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve… stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe vvv of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down…

בְּנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־ כֵ֣ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֒ צִוָּ֣ה וַיִּשְׂא֡וּ שְׁתֵּֽי־ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה אֲבָנִ֜ים מִתּ֣וֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן לְמִסְפַּ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ דִּבֶּ֤ר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַיַּעֲבִר֤וּם עִמָּם֙ אֶל־ הַמָּל֔וֹן וַיַּנִּח֖וּם שָֽׁם׃ bə·nê- yiś·rå̄·ʾēl way·ya·‘ă·śū- ḵên ka·’ă·šer yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ṣiw·wāh way·yiś·’ū šə·tê- ‘eś·rêh ’ă·ḇā·nîm mit·tō·wḵ hay·yar·dên lə·mis·par šiḇ·ṭê ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·rūm ‘im·mām ’el- ham·mā·lō·wn way·yan·ni·ḥūm šām — WLC · 8

Joshua also set up twelve… stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood… And [the stones] are there to this day.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤁 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֮ הֵקִ֣ים וּשְׁתֵּ֧ים עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה אֲבָנִ֗ים בְּת֣וֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ תַּ֗חַת הַכֹּהֲנִ֔ים נֹשְׂאֵ֖י אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֑ית מַצַּב֙ רַגְלֵ֣י וַיִּ֣הְיוּ שָׁ֔ם עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ hê·qîm ū·šə·têm ‘eś·rêh ’ă·ḇā·nîm bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yar·dên ta·ḥaṯ hak·kō·hă·nîm nō·śə·’ê ’ă·rō·wn hab·bə·rîṯ maṣ·ṣaḇ raḡ·lê way·yih·yū šām ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 9

Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the people had completed everything… the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell them, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried across,
𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅
וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֞ים נֹשְׂאֵ֣י הָאָר֗וֹן עֹמְדִים֮ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ עַ֣ד הָעָ֔ם תֹּ֣ם כָּֽל־ הַ֠דָּבָר אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־ צִוָּ֨ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ כְּכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־ צִוָּ֥ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ הָעָ֖ם וַיְמַהֲר֥וּ וַֽיַּעֲבֹֽרוּ׃ wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm nō·śə·’ê hā·’ā·rō·wn ‘ō·mə·ḏîm bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yar·dên ‘aḏ hā·‘ām tōm kāl- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’eṯ- ṣiw·wāh yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ lə·ḏab·bêr ’el- kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- mō·šeh ’eṯ- ṣiw·wāh yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ hā·‘ām way·ma·hă·rū way·ya·‘ă·ḇō·rū — WLC · 10

- and after everyone… had finished crossing, the priests with the ark of the LORD crossed in the sight of the people.

The Reubenites…, the Gadites…, and the half-tribe… of Manasseh crossed over before the Israelites…, armed for battle as Moses had instructed them…
𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤇𐤑𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
בְּנֵי־ רְאוּבֵ֨ן וּבְנֵי־ גָ֜ד וַחֲצִ֨י שֵׁ֤בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁה֙ וַ֠יַּעַבְרוּ לִפְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל חֲמֻשִׁ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר מֹשֶֽׁה׃ דִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם bə·nê- rə·’ū·ḇên ū·ḇə·nê- ḡāḏ wa·ḥă·ṣî šê·ḇeṭ ham·naš·šeh way·ya·‘aḇ·rū lip̄·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ḥă·mu·šîm ka·’ă·šer mō·šeh dib·ber ’ă·lê·hem — WLC · 12

About 40,000… troops armed… for battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of Jericho.

כְּאַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֣י הַצָּבָ֑א לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה עָבְר֞וּ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶ֖ל עַֽרְב֥וֹת יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ס kə·’ar·bā·‘îm ’e·lep̄ ḥă·lū·ṣê haṣ·ṣā·ḇā lam·mil·ḥā·māh ‘ā·ḇə·rū lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’el ‘ar·ḇō·wṯ yə·rî·ḥōw — WLC · 13

On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they revered him all the days of his life, just as they had revered Moses.

So Joshua commanded the priests,… “Come up from the Jordan.”

- When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet… touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before…

The Camp at Gilgal

On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho.

And there at Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve… stones they had taken from the Jordan.

Then [Joshua] said to the Israelites…,… “In the future, when your children ask their fathers,… ‘What is the meaning of these stones?’

you are to tell [them],… ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’

For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, just as [He]… did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over.
