Chapter 5

The Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

1

Now when all the Amorite kings vvv west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites… until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed… for fear of the Israelites…

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel once again…

𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕

הַהִ֗יא בָּעֵ֣ת יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֤ר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ עֲשֵׂ֥ה לְךָ֖ צֻרִ֑ים חַֽרְב֣וֹת מֹ֥ל אֶת־ בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְשׁ֛וּב שֵׁנִֽית׃ ha·hî bā·‘êṯ Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ‘ă·śêh lə·ḵā ṣu·rîm ḥar·ḇō·wṯ mōl ’eṯ- bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·šūḇ šê·nîṯWLC · 2

So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤋𐤅 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤋𐤅𐤕

יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ וַיַּעַשׂ־ ל֥וֹ צֻרִ֑ים חַֽרְב֣וֹת וַיָּ֙מָל֙ אֶת־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶל־ גִּבְעַ֖ת הָעֲרָלֽוֹת׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·ya·‘aś- lōw ṣu·rîm ḥar·ḇō·wṯ way·yā·māl ’eṯ- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’el- giḇ·‘aṯ hā·‘ă·rā·lō·wṯWLC · 3

Now this is why Joshua circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt— all the men of war— had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.

𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

וְזֶ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ מָ֣ל כָּל־ הָעָ֣ם הַיֹּצֵא֩ מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם הַזְּכָרִ֜ים כֹּ֣ל׀ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה מֵ֤תוּ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ בַמִּדְבָּר֙ בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ wə·zeh had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ māl kāl- hā·‘ām hay·yō·ṣê mim·miṣ·ra·yim haz·zə·ḵā·rîm kōl ’an·šê ham·mil·ḥā·māh mê·ṯū bad·de·reḵ ḇam·miḏ·bār bə·ṣê·ṯām mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 4

Though all… who had come out were circumcised, none… of those born in the wilderness on the journey vvv from Egypt had been circumcised.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤅

כִּֽי־ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם הַיֹּֽצְאִ֑ים הָי֔וּ מֻלִ֣ים וְכָל־ לֹא־ הָ֠עָם הַיִּלֹּדִ֨ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר בַּדֶּ֛רֶךְ בְּצֵאתָ֥ם מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם מָֽלוּ׃ kî- kāl- hā·‘ām hay·yō·ṣə·’îm hā·yū mu·lîm wə·ḵāl lō- hā·‘ām hay·yil·lō·ḏîm bam·miḏ·bār bad·de·reḵ bə·ṣê·ṯām mim·miṣ·ra·yim mā·lūWLC · 5

For the Israelites… had wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey… the LORD. So the LORD vowed never to let them see the land He had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔

כִּ֣י׀ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ הָלְכ֣וּ בַּמִּדְבָּר֒ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה עַד־ כָּל־ הַגּ֜וֹי אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם תֹּ֨ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ שָׁמְע֖וּ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ לָהֶ֔ם נִשְׁבַּ֤ע לְבִלְתִּ֞י הַרְאוֹתָ֣ם אֶת־ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהוָ֤ה נִשְׁבַּ֨ע לַֽאֲבוֹתָם֙ לָ֣תֶת לָ֔נוּ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ kî ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl hā·lə·ḵū bam·miḏ·bār ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh ‘aḏ- kāl- hag·gō·w ’an·šê ham·mil·ḥā·māh hay·yō·ṣə·’îm mim·miṣ·ra·yim tōm ’ă·šer lō- šā·mə·‘ū bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ă·šer Yah·weh lā·hem niš·ba‘ lə·ḇil·tî har·’ō·w·ṯām ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer Yah·weh niš·ba‘ la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām lā·ṯeṯ lā·nū ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇāšWLC · 6

And He raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. [Until this time] they were… still uncircumcised, since they had not been circumcised along the way.

𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤓𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊

וְאֶת־ הֵקִ֣ים בְּנֵיהֶם֙ תַּחְתָּ֔ם אֹתָ֖ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ מָ֣ל הָי֔וּ כִּ֛י עֲרֵלִ֣ים כִּי־ לֹא־ מָ֥לוּ אוֹתָ֖ם בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃ wə·’eṯ- hê·qîm bə·nê·hem taḥ·tām ’ō·ṯām yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ māl hā·yū kî ‘ă·rê·lîm kî- lō- mā·lū ’ō·w·ṯām bad·dā·reḵWLC · 7

And after… all the nation had been circumcised, they stayed there in the camp until they were healed.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤐

וַיְהִ֛י כַּאֲשֶׁר־ תַּ֥מּוּ כָל־ הַגּ֖וֹי לְהִמּ֑וֹל וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ תַחְתָּ֛ם בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה עַ֥ד חֲיוֹתָֽם׃פ way·hî ka·’ă·šer- tam·mū ḵāl hag·gō·w lə·him·mō·wl way·yê·šə·ḇū ṯaḥ·tām bam·ma·ḥă·neh ‘aḏ ḥă·yō·w·ṯāmWLC · 8

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that place has been called… Gilgal to this day.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ הַיּ֗וֹם גַּלּ֛וֹתִי אֶת־ חֶרְפַּ֥ת מִצְרַ֖יִם מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם הַהוּא֙ הַמָּק֤וֹם וַיִּקְרָ֞א שֵׁ֣ם גִּלְגָּ֔ל עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ hay·yō·wm gal·lō·w·ṯî ’eṯ- ḥer·paṯ miṣ·ra·yim mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem ha·hū ham·mā·qō·wm way·yiq·rā šêm gil·gāl ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wmWLC · 9

On the evening of the fourteenth… day of the month, while the Israelites… were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they kept the Passover.

𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇

בָּעֶ֖רֶב בְּאַרְבָּעָה֩ עָשָׂ֨ר י֥וֹם לַחֹ֛דֶשׁ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיַּחֲנ֥וּ בַּגִּלְגָּ֑ל בְּעַֽרְב֥וֹת יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ אֶת־ הַפֶּ֡סַח bā·‘e·reḇ bə·’ar·bā·‘āh ‘ā·śār yō·wm la·ḥō·ḏeš ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·ḥă·nū bag·gil·gāl bə·‘ar·ḇō·wṯ yə·rî·ḥōw way·ya·‘ă·śū ’eṯ- hap·pe·saḥWLC · 10

The day after the Passover, on that very day,… they ate unleavened bread and roasted grain from the produce of the land.

𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

מִמָּֽחֳרַ֥ת הַפֶּ֖סַח בְּעֶ֖צֶם הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ וַיֹּ֨אכְל֜וּ מַצּ֣וֹת וְקָל֑וּי מֵעֲב֥וּר הָאָ֛רֶץ mim·mā·ḥo·raṯ hap·pe·saḥ bə·‘e·ṣem hay·yō·wm haz·zeh way·yō·ḵə·lū maṣ·ṣō·wṯ wə·qā·lui mê·‘ă·ḇūr hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 11

And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the manna ceased. There was no more manna for the Israelites…, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of Canaan.

𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀𐤎 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍

מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת בְּאָכְלָם֙ מֵעֲב֣וּר הָאָ֔רֶץ הַמָּ֜ן וַיִּשְׁבֹּ֨ת הָ֥יָה וְלֹא־ ע֛וֹד מָ֑ן לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַהִֽיא׃ס בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה וַיֹּאכְל֗וּ מִתְּבוּאַת֙ אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ bə·’ā·ḵə·lām mê·‘ă·ḇūr hā·’ā·reṣ ham·mān way·yiš·bōṯ hā·yāh wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ mān liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl ha·hî baš·šā·nāh way·yō·ḵə·lū mit·tə·ḇū·’aṯ ’e·reṣ kə·na·‘anWLC · 12

The Commander of the LORD’s Army

Now when Joshua was… near Jericho, he looked up… and saw… a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked “Are You for us or for our enemies?”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅

יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֮ וַיְהִ֗י בִּֽהְי֣וֹת בִּירִיחוֹ֒ וַיִּשָּׂ֤א עֵינָיו֙ וַיַּ֔רְא וְהִנֵּה־ אִישׁ֙ עֹמֵ֣ד לְנֶגְדּ֔וֹ שְׁלוּפָ֖ה וְחַרְבּ֥וֹ בְּיָד֑וֹ יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ אֵלָיו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ אַתָּ֖ה הֲלָ֥נוּ אִם־ לְצָרֵֽינוּ׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·hî bih·yō·wṯ bî·rî·ḥōw way·yiś·śā ‘ê·nāw way·yar wə·hin·nêh- ’îš ‘ō·mêḏ lə·neḡ·dōw šə·lū·p̄āh wə·ḥar·bōw bə·yā·ḏōw yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yê·leḵ ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer lōw ’at·tāh hă·lā·nū ’im- lə·ṣā·rê·nūWLC · 13

“Neither,”… He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown… in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”

The Commander of the LORD’s army replied -, “Take off your sandals -, for the place where you are standing… is holy…” And Joshua did so.
