Chapter 8

The Conquest of Ai

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid… or discouraged. Take the whole army… with you -, and go up and attack Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅

יְהוָ֤ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ אַל־ תִּירָ֣א וְאַל־ תֵּחָ֔ת קַ֣ח כָּל־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה עַ֣ם עִמְּךָ֗ אֵ֚ת וְק֖וּם עֲלֵ֣ה הָעָ֑י רְאֵ֣ה׀ נָתַ֣תִּי בְיָדְךָ֗ אֶת־ מֶ֤לֶךְ הָעַי֙ וְאֶת־ עַמּ֔וֹ וְאֶת־ עִיר֖וֹ וְאֶת־ אַרְצֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’al- tî·rā wə·’al- tê·ḥāṯ qaḥ kāl- ham·mil·ḥā·māh ‘am ‘im·mə·ḵā ’êṯ wə·qūm ‘ă·lêh hā·‘āy rə·’êh nā·ṯat·tî ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā ’eṯ- me·leḵ hā·‘ay wə·’eṯ- ‘am·mōw wə·’eṯ- ‘î·rōw wə·’eṯ- ’ar·ṣōwWLC · 1

And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set up an ambush behind the city.”

וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ לָעַ֜י וּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤יתָ לִֽירִיחוֹ֙ וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ רַק־ תָּבֹ֣זּוּ שְׁלָלָ֥הּ וּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּ לָכֶ֑ם שִׂים־ לְךָ֥ אֹרֵ֛ב מֵאַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃ לָעִ֖יר wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā lā·‘ay ū·lə·mal·kāh ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯā lî·rî·ḥōw ū·lə·mal·kāh raq- tā·ḇōz·zū šə·lā·lāh ū·ḇə·hem·tāh lā·ḵem śîm- lə·ḵā ’ō·rêḇ mê·’a·ḥă·re·hā lā·‘îrWLC · 2

So Joshua and the whole army… set out to attack Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 {}… mighty men of valor and sent them out at night

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ וְכָל־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַ֥ם וַיָּ֧קָם לַעֲל֣וֹת הָעָ֑י יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ וַיִּבְחַ֣ר שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים אֶ֤לֶף אִישׁ֙ גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֔יִל וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֖ם לָֽיְלָה׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ wə·ḵāl ham·mil·ḥā·māh ‘am way·yā·qām la·‘ă·lō·wṯ hā·‘āy yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yiḇ·ḥar šə·lō·šîm ’e·lep̄ ’îš gib·bō·w·rê ha·ḥa·yil way·yiš·lā·ḥêm lā·yə·lāhWLC · 3

with these orders -: “Pay attention. You are to lie in ambush behind the city, - not too far from it. All of you must be ready.

𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤕𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤒𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤍𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤌

וַיְצַ֨ו אֹתָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר רְ֠אוּ אַתֶּ֞ם אֹרְבִ֤ים מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י לָעִיר֙ מִן־ הָעִ֖יר אַל־ מְאֹ֑ד תַּרְחִ֥יקוּ הָעִ֔יר כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם נְכֹנִֽים׃ way·ṣaw ’ō·ṯām lê·mōr rə·’ū ’at·tem ’ō·rə·ḇîm mê·’a·ḥă·rê lā·‘îr min- hā·‘îr ’al- mə·’ōḏ tar·ḥî·qū hā·‘îr kul·lə·ḵem wih·yî·ṯem nə·ḵō·nîmWLC · 4

Then I and all the troops with me will advance… on the city… When they come out against us as they did the first time, we will flee from them.

וַאֲנִ֗י וְכָל־ הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֔י נִקְרַ֖ב אֶל־ הָעִ֑יר וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־ יֵצְא֤וּ לִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ wa·’ă·nî wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ’ă·šer ’it·tî niq·raḇ ’el- hā·‘îr wə·hā·yāh kî- yê·ṣə·’ū liq·rā·ṯê·nū ka·’ă·šer bā·ri·šō·nāh wə·nas·nū lip̄·nê·hemWLC · 5

They will pursue us… until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘[The Israelites] are running away from us as they did before…’ So as we flee from them,

𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤍𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤎𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

וְיָצְא֣וּ אַחֲרֵ֗ינוּ עַ֣ד הַתִּיקֵ֤נוּ אוֹתָם֙ מִן־ הָעִ֔יר כִּ֣י יֹֽאמְר֔וּ נָסִ֣ים לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·yā·ṣə·’ū ’a·ḥă·rê·nū ‘aḏ hat·tî·qê·nū ’ō·w·ṯām min- hā·‘îr kî yō·mə·rū nā·sîm lə·p̄ā·nê·nū ka·’ă·šer bā·ri·šō·nāh wə·nas·nū lip̄·nê·hemWLC · 6

you are to rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌

וְאַתֶּ֗ם תָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ מֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔ב וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖ם אֶת־ הָעִ֑יר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם וּנְתָנָ֛הּ בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tem tā·qu·mū mê·hā·’ō·w·rêḇ wə·hō·w·raš·tem ’eṯ- hā·‘îr Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ū·nə·ṯā·nāh bə·yeḏ·ḵemWLC · 7

And when you have taken the city, set it on fire -. Do as the LORD has commanded! See, I have given you orders -.”

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌

וְהָיָ֞ה כְּתָפְשְׂכֶ֣ם אֶת־ הָעִ֗יר הָעִיר֙ תַּצִּ֤יתוּ אֶת־ בָּאֵ֔שׁ תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ יְהוָ֖ה כִּדְבַ֥ר רְא֖וּ צִוִּ֥יתִי אֶתְכֶֽם׃ wə·hā·yāh kə·ṯā·p̄ə·śə·ḵem ’eṯ- hā·‘îr hā·‘îr taṣ·ṣî·ṯū ’eṯ- bā·’êš ta·‘ă·śū Yah·weh kiḏ·ḇar rə·’ū ṣiw·wî·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 8

So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of ambush and lay in wait between vvv Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. But [Joshua] spent that night among the people.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤍 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤌

יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֶל־ הַמַּאְרָ֔ב וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־ אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֣ם לָעָ֑י יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ וַיָּ֧לֶן הַה֖וּא בַּלַּ֥יְלָה בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yiš·lā·ḥêm way·yê·lə·ḵū ’el- ham·ma’·rāḇ way·yê·šə·ḇū bên bêṯ- ’êl ū·ḇên hā·‘ay mî·yām lā·‘āy yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yā·len ha·hū bal·lay·lāh bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘āmWLC · 9

Joshua got up early the next morning and mobilized [his men], and he and the elders of Israel marched before [them] up to Ai.

יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤ם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד אֶת־ הָעָ֑ם ה֜וּא וְזִקְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיַּ֨עַל לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם הָעָֽי׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yaš·kêm bab·bō·qer way·yip̄·qōḏ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām hū wə·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘al lip̄·nê hā·‘ām hā·‘āyWLC · 10

Then all the troops… who [were] with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front [of Ai] and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them… and the city.

וְכָל־ הָעָ֨ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֗וֹ עָלוּ֙ וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּ הָעִ֑יר וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ נֶ֣גֶד וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעַ֔י וְהַגַּ֖י בֵּינוֹ וּבֵין־ הָעָֽי׃ wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ham·mil·ḥā·māh ’ă·šer ’it·tōw ‘ā·lū way·yig·gə·šū hā·‘îr way·yā·ḇō·’ū ne·ḡeḏ way·ya·ḥă·nū miṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·wn lā·‘ay wə·hag·gay bē·nō ū·ḇên- hā·‘āyWLC · 11

Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set up an ambush between vvv Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤓

וַיִּקַּ֕ח כַּחֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיָּ֨שֶׂם אוֹתָ֜ם אֹרֵ֗ב בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־ אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֥ם לָעִֽיר׃ way·yiq·qaḥ ka·ḥă·mê·šeṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’îš way·yā·śem ’ō·w·ṯām ’ō·rêḇ bên bêṯ- ’êl ū·ḇên hā·‘ay mî·yām lā·‘îrWLC · 12

So the forces were stationed with the main camp to the north of the city and the rear guard to the west of the city. And that night Joshua went into the valley.

הָעָ֜ם אֶת־ וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ כָּל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־ עֲקֵב֖וֹ מִיָּ֣ם לָעִ֑יר הַה֖וּא בַּלַּ֥יְלָה יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעֵֽמֶק׃ hā·‘ām ’eṯ- way·yā·śî·mū kāl- ham·ma·ḥă·neh ’ă·šer miṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·wn lā·‘îr wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·qê·ḇōw mî·yām lā·‘îr ha·hū bal·lay·lāh yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yê·leḵ bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘ê·meqWLC · 13

  • When the king of Ai saw [the Israelites], he hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city - to engage [them] in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush [had been set up] against him behind the city.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓

וַיְהִ֞י מֶֽלֶךְ־ הָעַ֗י כִּרְא֣וֹת וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ וַיֵּצְא֣וּ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ אַנְשֵֽׁי־ הָעִ֣יר ה֧וּא וְכָל־ עַמּ֛וֹ לִקְרַֽאת־ יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה וְהוּא֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּֽי־ אֹרֵ֥ב ל֖וֹ מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י הָעִֽיר׃ way·hî me·leḵ- hā·‘ay kir·’ō·wṯ way·ma·hă·rū way·yê·ṣə·’ū way·yaš·kî·mū ’an·šê- hā·‘îr hū wə·ḵāl ‘am·mōw liq·raṯ- yiś·rā·’êl lam·mil·ḥā·māh lam·mō·w·‘êḏ lip̄·nê hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh wə·hū lō yā·ḏa‘ kî- ’ō·rêḇ lōw mê·’a·ḥă·rê hā·‘îrWLC · 14

Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.

Then all the men [of Ai] were summoned to pursue them,… and they followed… Joshua and were drawn away from the city.

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold out your battle lance - toward Ai, for into your hand I will deliver [the city].” So Joshua held out his battle lance - toward [Ai],

and as soon as he did so…, the men in ambush rose quickly from their position. They rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire -.

When the men of Ai turned and looked… back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not… escape in any direction…, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now turned against their pursuers.

When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that smoke was rising from [it], they turned around and struck down the men of Ai.

Meanwhile, those in the ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of Ai were trapped between the Israelite forces on both sides… So [Israel] struck them down until no survivor or fugitive remained

But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

  • When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen vvv by the sword,… all the Israelites returned to Ai and put it vvv to the sword [as well].

  • A total of twelve… thousand men and women fell that day— all the people of Ai.

Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in Ai -.

Israel took for themselves only the cattle and plunder of that city, as the LORD vvv vvv had commanded Joshua.

So Joshua burned Ai and made it a permanent heap of ruins, a desolation to this day.

  • He hung the king of Ai on a tree until… evening, and at sunset… Joshua commanded that they take down the body… from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.

At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD, the God of Israel,

just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites… He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, and they sacrificed peace offerings.

And there in the presence vvv of the Israelites, [Joshua] inscribed on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written.

All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides… of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the Levitical priests who carried [it]. Half [of the people stood] in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to bless the people of Israel.

Afterward…, Joshua read aloud all the words of the law— the blessings and the curses— according to all that is written in the Book of the Law.

There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
