Chapter 1

The Conquest of Canaan Proceeds

  • After the death of Joshua, the Israelites… inquired of the LORD,… “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?”

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤕𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉

“Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”

יְהוּדָ֣ה יַעֲלֶ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה הִנֵּ֛ה נָתַ֥תִּי הָאָ֖רֶץ אֶת־ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ yə·hū·ḏāh ya·‘ă·leh way·yō·mer Yah·weh hin·nêh nā·ṯat·tî hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 2

Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our allotted territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.

יְהוּדָה֩ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָחִ֜יו לְשִׁמְע֨וֹן עֲלֵ֧ה אִתִּ֣י בְגוֹרָלִ֗י וְנִֽלָּחֲמָה֙ בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י אֲנִ֛י גַם־ וְהָלַכְתִּ֧י אִתְּךָ֖ בְּגוֹרָלֶ֑ךָ שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אִתּ֖וֹ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yō·mer ’ā·ḥîw lə·šim·‘ō·wn ‘ă·lêh ’it·tî ḇə·ḡō·w·rā·lî wə·nil·lā·ḥă·māh bak·kə·na·‘ă·nî ’ă·nî ḡam- wə·hā·laḵ·tî ’it·tə·ḵā bə·ḡō·w·rā·le·ḵā šim·‘ō·wn way·yê·leḵ ’it·tōwWLC · 3

When Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤁𐤆𐤒

יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיַּ֣עַל יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ וַיִּתֵּ֧ן הַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֖י בְּיָדָ֑ם וַיַּכּ֣וּם עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִֽישׁ׃ בְּבֶ֔זֶק yə·hū·ḏāh way·ya·‘al Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yit·tên hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî bə·yā·ḏām way·yak·kūm ‘ă·śe·reṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’îš bə·ḇe·zeqWLC · 4

And [there] they found vvv Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking down the Canaanites and Perizzites.

As Adoni-bezek… fled, they pursued him,… seized him, and cut off his thumbs… and big toes.

אֲדֹ֣נִי בֶ֔זֶק וַיָּ֙נָס֙ וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרָ֑יו וַיֹּאחֲז֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ וַֽיְקַצְּצ֔וּ אֶת־ בְּהֹנ֥וֹת יָדָ֖יו וְרַגְלָֽיו׃ ’ă·ḏō·nî ḇe·zeq way·yā·nās way·yir·də·p̄ū ’a·ḥă·rāw way·yō·ḥă·zū ’ō·ṯōw way·qaṣ·ṣə·ṣū ’eṯ- bə·hō·nō·wṯ yā·ḏāw wə·raḡ·lāwWLC · 6

Then Adoni-bezek said “Seventy kings with their thumbs… and big toes cut off… have gathered [the scraps] under my table. As I have done [to them], so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died…

The Capture of Jerusalem and Hebron

Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put [the city] vvv to the sword and set it on fire.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤔

בְנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָה֙ וַיִּלָּחֲמ֤וּ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיִּלְכְּד֣וּ אוֹתָ֔הּ וַיַּכּ֖וּהָ לְפִי־ חָ֑רֶב וְאֶת־ שִׁלְּח֥וּ הָעִ֖יר בָאֵֽשׁ׃ ḇə·nê- yə·hū·ḏāh way·yil·lā·ḥă·mū bî·rū·šā·lim way·yil·kə·ḏū ’ō·w·ṯāh way·yak·kū·hā lə·p̄î- ḥā·reḇ wə·’eṯ- šil·lə·ḥū hā·‘îr ḇā·’êšWLC · 8

Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤄

וְאַחַ֗ר בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה יָֽרְדוּ֙ לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָהָ֔ר וְהַנֶּ֖גֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָֽה׃ wə·’a·ḥar bə·nê yə·hū·ḏāh yā·rə·ḏū lə·hil·lā·ḥêm bak·kə·na·‘ă·nî yō·wō·šêḇ hā·hār wə·han·ne·ḡeḇ wə·haš·šə·p̄ê·lāhWLC · 9

Judah also marched against the Canaanites who were living in Hebron (- formerly known as vvv Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤉

יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֶל־ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּחֶבְר֔וֹן חֶבְר֥וֹן לְפָנִ֖ים וְשֵׁם־ קִרְיַ֣ת אַרְבַּ֑ע וַיַּכּ֛וּ אֶת־ שֵׁשַׁ֥י וְאֶת־ אֲחִימַ֖ן וְאֶת־ תַּלְמָֽי׃ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yê·leḵ ’el- hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî hay·yō·wō·šêḇ bə·ḥeḇ·rō·wn ḥeḇ·rō·wn lə·p̄ā·nîm wə·šêm- qir·yaṯ ’ar·ba‘ way·yak·kū ’eṯ- šê·šay wə·’eṯ- ’ă·ḥî·man wə·’eṯ- tal·māyWLC · 10

From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (- formerly known as vvv Kiriath-sepher).

מִשָּׁ֔ם וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֶל־ יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י דְּבִ֑יר דְּבִ֥יר לְפָנִ֖ים וְשֵׁם־ קִרְיַת־ סֵֽפֶר׃ miš·šām way·yê·leḵ ’el- yō·wō·šə·ḇê də·ḇîr də·ḇîr lə·p̄ā·nîm wə·šêm- qir·yaṯ- sê·p̄erWLC · 11

And Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down vvv Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”

So Othniel son of Caleb’s younger… brother Kenaz captured [the city], and [Caleb] gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.

𐤏𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤊𐤋𐤁 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤉 𐤒𐤍𐤆 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄

עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל בֶּן־ כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֣ן מִמֶּ֑נּוּ אֲחִ֥י קְנַ֔ז וַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙ וַיִּתֶּן־ אֶת־ בִתּ֖וֹ עַכְסָ֥ה ל֛וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ ‘ā·ṯə·nî·’êl ben- ḵā·lêḇ haq·qā·ṭōn mim·men·nū ’ă·ḥî qə·naz way·yil·kə·ḏāh way·yit·ten- ’eṯ- ḇit·tōw ‘aḵ·sāh lōw lə·’iš·šāhWLC · 13

One day [Acsah] came [to Othniel] and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off… her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤎𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤍𐤇 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤊𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤊

וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ וַתְּסִיתֵ֙הוּ֙ לִשְׁא֤וֹל מֵֽאֵת־ אָבִ֙יהָ֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַתִּצְנַ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל הַחֲמ֑וֹר כָּלֵ֖ב וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ לָ֥הּ מַה־ לָּֽךְ׃ way·hî bə·ḇō·w·’āh wat·tə·sî·ṯê·hū liš·’ō·wl mê·’êṯ- ’ā·ḇî·hā haś·śā·ḏeh wat·tiṣ·naḥ mê·‘al ha·ḥă·mō·wr kā·lêḇ way·yō·mer- lāh mah- lāḵWLC · 14

“Give me a blessing,” she answered “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water [as well].” So Caleb gave her both the upper - and lower springs.

הָֽבָה־ לִּ֣י בְרָכָ֗ה וַתֹּ֨אמֶר ל֜וֹ כִּ֣י נְתַתָּ֔נִי אֶ֤רֶץ הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לִ֖י גֻּלֹּ֣ת מָ֑יִם כָּלֵ֗ב אֵ֚ת וַיִּתֶּן־ לָ֣הּ עִלִּ֔ית וְאֵ֖ת גֻּלֹּ֥ת תַּחְתִּֽית׃פ גֻּלֹּ֣ת hā·ḇāh- lî ḇə·rā·ḵāh wat·tō·mer lōw kî nə·ṯat·tā·nî ’e·reṣ han·ne·ḡeḇ wə·nā·ṯat·tāh lî gul·lōṯ mā·yim kā·lêḇ ’êṯ way·yit·ten- lāh ‘il·lîṯ wə·’êṯ gul·lōṯ taḥ·tîṯ gul·lōṯWLC · 15

Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near Arad. They went to live among the people.

𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤏𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌

וּבְנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֜ה חֹתֵ֨ן קֵינִי֩ עָל֨וּ אֶת־ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מֵעִ֤יר הַתְּמָרִים֙ מִדְבַּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּנֶ֣גֶב עֲרָ֑ד וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אֶת־ הָעָֽם׃ ū·ḇə·nê mō·šeh ḥō·ṯên qê·nî ‘ā·lū ’eṯ- bə·nê yə·hū·ḏāh mê·‘îr hat·tə·mā·rîm miḏ·bar yə·hū·ḏāh ’ă·šer bə·ne·ḡeḇ ‘ă·rāḏ way·yê·leḵ way·yê·šeḇ ’eṯ- hā·‘āmWLC · 16

Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted [the city] to destruction -. So [it] was called -… Hormah.

At that time Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants vvv of Beth-shean, - Taanach, - - Dor, - - Ibleam, - - Megiddo, and their villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.

Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants vvv of Beth-shemesh and vvv Beth-anath. So [the Naphtalites] also lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants vvv of Beth-shemesh vvv and Beth-anath served them as forced laborers.

And the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the Amorites into forced labor.
