Tola
1
After the time of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose up to save Israel He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.

Tola judged Israel twenty-three… years, and when he died, he was buried in Shamir.

[Tola] was followed by Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two… years.

אַחֲרָ֔יו וַיָּ֣קָם יָאִ֖יר הַגִּלְעָדִ֑י וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם שָׁנָֽה׃ ’a·ḥă·rāw way·yā·qām yā·’îr hag·gil·‘ā·ḏî way·yiš·pōṭ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl ‘eś·rîm ū·šə·ta·yim šā·nāh — WLC · 3

He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys. And they had thirty towns - in the land of Gilead, which to this day are called vvv Havvoth-jair.

When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.

Oppression by the Philistines and Ammonites

And again the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals, the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and… Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites… - and Philistines. Thus they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.

So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines… and Ammonites…,

אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵם֙ בְּיַד־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וּבְיַ֖ד בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yim·kə·rêm bə·yaḏ- pə·liš·tîm ū·ḇə·yaḏ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wn — WLC · 7

who that very year harassed and oppressed the Israelites,… and they did so for eighteen… years to all the Israelites… on the other side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.

The Ammonites… also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤓
בְנֵֽי־ עַמּוֹן֙ אֶת־ גַּם־ וַיַּעַבְר֤וּ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן לְהִלָּחֵ֛ם בִּיהוּדָ֥ה וּבְבִנְיָמִ֖ין וּבְבֵ֣ית אֶפְרָ֑יִם לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מְאֹֽד׃ וַתֵּ֥צֶר ḇə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn ’eṯ- gam- way·ya·‘aḇ·rū hay·yar·dên lə·hil·lā·ḥêm bî·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇə·ḇin·yā·mîn ū·ḇə·ḇêṯ ’ep̄·rā·yim lə·yiś·rā·’êl mə·’ōḏ wat·tê·ṣer — WLC · 9

Then the Israelites… cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against You, for we have indeed forsaken our God and served the Baals.”

The LORD replied “When the Egyptians,… Amorites,… Ammonites…,… Philistines,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌

Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you and you cried out to Me, did I not save you from their hands?
𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤌
וְצִידוֹנִ֤ים וַֽעֲמָלֵק֙ וּמָע֔וֹן לָחֲצ֖וּ אֶתְכֶ֑ם וַתִּצְעֲק֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וָאוֹשִׁ֥יעָה אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיָּדָֽם׃ wə·ṣî·ḏō·w·nîm wa·‘ă·mā·lêq ū·mā·‘ō·wn lā·ḥă·ṣū ’eṯ·ḵem wat·tiṣ·‘ă·qū ’ê·lay wā·’ō·wō·šî·‘āh ’eṯ·ḵem mî·yā·ḏām — WLC · 12

But you have forsaken Me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.

וְאַתֶּם֙ עֲזַבְתֶּ֣ם אוֹתִ֔י וַתַּעַבְד֖וּ אֲחֵרִ֑ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים לָכֵ֥ן לֹֽא־ אוֹסִ֖יף לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֶתְכֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tem ‘ă·zaḇ·tem ’ō·w·ṯî wat·ta·‘aḇ·ḏū ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lā·ḵên lō- ’ō·w·sîp̄ lə·hō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ·ḵem — WLC · 13

Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen Let them save you in your time of trouble.”

לְכ֗וּ וְזַֽעֲקוּ֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם בָּ֑ם הֵ֛מָּה יוֹשִׁ֥יעוּ לָכֶ֖ם בְּעֵ֥ת צָרַתְכֶֽם׃ lə·ḵū wə·za·‘ă·qū ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer bə·ḥar·tem bām hêm·māh yō·wō·šî·‘ū lā·ḵem bə·‘êṯ ṣā·raṯ·ḵem — WLC · 14

“We have sinned,” the Israelites… said to the LORD. “Deal… with us… as You see fit; but please deliver us today…!”

חָטָ֔אנוּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ עֲשֵׂה־ אַתָּ֣ה לָ֔נוּ כְּכָל־ בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ הַטּ֖וֹב אַ֛ךְ נָ֖א הַצִּילֵ֥נוּ הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ ḥā·ṭā·nū ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mə·rū ’el- Yah·weh ‘ă·śêh- ’at·tāh lā·nū kə·ḵāl- bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā haṭ·ṭō·wḇ ’aḵ nā haṣ·ṣî·lê·nū hay·yō·wm haz·zeh — WLC · 15

So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.

וַיָּסִ֜ירוּ אֶת־ הַנֵּכָר֙ אֱלֹהֵ֤י מִקִּרְבָּ֔ם וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֑ה נַפְשׁ֖וֹ וַתִּקְצַ֥ר בַּעֲמַ֥ל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ way·yā·sî·rū ’eṯ- han·nê·ḵār ’ĕ·lō·hê miq·qir·bām way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’eṯ- Yah·weh nap̄·šōw wat·tiq·ṣar ba·‘ă·mal yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 16

Then the Ammonites… were called to arms and camped in Gilead, and the Israelites… assembled and camped at Mizpah.
