Chapter 13

The Birth of Samson

1

Again the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD, so [He] delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄𐤐

וַיֹּסִ֙פוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָ֛ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם בְּיַד־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃פ way·yō·si·p̄ū bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yit·tə·nêm bə·yaḏ- pə·liš·tîm ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāhWLC · 1

Now there was a man from Zorah named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, whose wife [was] barren and had no children.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤌𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤒𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄

וַיְהִי֩ אֶחָ֧ד אִ֨ישׁ מִצָּרְעָ֛ה וּשְׁמ֣וֹ מָנ֑וֹחַ מִמִּשְׁפַּ֥חַת הַדָּנִ֖י וְאִשְׁתּ֥וֹ עֲקָרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יָלָֽדָה׃ way·hî ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš miṣ·ṣā·rə·‘āh ū·šə·mōw mā·nō·w·aḥ mim·miš·pa·ḥaṯ had·dā·nî wə·’iš·tōw ‘ă·qā·rāh wə·lō yā·lā·ḏāhWLC · 2

The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “It is true… that you are barren and have no children; but you will conceive and give birth to a son.

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤒𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍

מַלְאַךְ־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיֵּרָ֥א אֶל־ הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֗יהָ הִנֵּה־ נָ֤א אַתְּ־ עֲקָרָה֙ וְלֹ֣א יָלַ֔דְתְּ וְהָרִ֖ית וְיָלַ֥דְתְּ בֵּֽן׃ mal·’aḵ- Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’el- hā·’iš·šāh way·yō·mer ’ê·le·hā hin·nêh- nā ’at- ‘ă·qā·rāh wə·lō yā·laḏt wə·hā·rîṯ wə·yā·laḏt bênWLC · 3

Now please be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, and not to eat anything unclean.

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤌𐤀

וְעַתָּה֙ נָ֔א הִשָּׁ֣מְרִי וְאַל־ תִּשְׁתִּ֖י יַ֣יִן וְשֵׁכָ֑ר וְאַל־ תֹּאכְלִ֖י כָּל־ טָמֵֽא׃ wə·‘at·tāh nā hiš·šā·mə·rî wə·’al- tiš·tî ya·yin wə·šê·ḵār wə·’al- tō·ḵə·lî kāl- ṭā·mêWLC · 4

For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no razor shall touch… his head, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤊 𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤆𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌

כִּי֩ הִנָּ֨ךְ הָרָ֜ה וְיֹלַ֣דְתְּ בֵּ֗ן לֹא־ וּמוֹרָה֙ יַעֲלֶ֣ה עַל־ רֹאשׁ֔וֹ כִּֽי־ הַנַּ֖עַר יִהְיֶ֥ה נְזִ֧יר אֱלֹהִ֛ים מִן־ הַבָּ֑טֶן וְה֗וּא יָחֵ֛ל לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִיַּ֥ד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ kî hin·nāḵ hā·rāh wə·yō·laḏt bên lō- ū·mō·w·rāh ya·‘ă·leh ‘al- rō·šōw kî- han·na·‘ar yih·yeh nə·zîr ’ĕ·lō·hîm min- hab·bā·ṭen wə·hū yā·ḥêl lə·hō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl mî·yaḏ pə·liš·tîmWLC · 5

So the woman went and told her husband,… “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly awesome. I did not ask him where he came from and he did not tell me his name.

𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤅

הָאִשָּׁ֗ה וַתָּבֹ֣א וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לְאִישָׁהּ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ אִ֤ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים֙ בָּ֣א אֵלַ֔י וּמַרְאֵ֕הוּ כְּמַרְאֵ֛ה מַלְאַ֥ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים מְאֹ֑ד נוֹרָ֣א וְלֹ֤א שְׁאִלְתִּ֙יהוּ֙ אֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֣ה ה֔וּא וְאֶת־ לֹֽא־ הִגִּ֥יד לִֽי׃ שְׁמ֖וֹ hā·’iš·šāh wat·tā·ḇō wat·tō·mer lə·’î·šāh lê·mōr ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm bā ’ê·lay ū·mar·’ê·hū kə·mar·’êh mal·’aḵ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm mə·’ōḏ nō·w·rā wə·lō šə·’il·tî·hū ’ê- miz·zeh hū wə·’eṯ- lō- hig·gîḏ lî šə·mōwWLC · 6

But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death.’”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤊 𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤆𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤐

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לִ֔י הִנָּ֥ךְ הָרָ֖ה וְיֹלַ֣דְתְּ בֵּ֑ן וְעַתָּ֞ה אַל־ תִּשְׁתִּ֣י׀ יַ֣יִן וְשֵׁכָ֗ר וְאַל־ תֹּֽאכְלִי֙ כָּל־ טֻמְאָ֔ה כִּֽי־ הַנַּ֔עַר יִהְיֶ֣ה נְזִ֤יר אֱלֹהִים֙ מִן־ הַבֶּ֖טֶן עַד־ י֥וֹם מוֹתֽוֹ׃פ way·yō·mer lî hin·nāḵ hā·rāh wə·yō·laḏt bên wə·‘at·tāh ’al- tiš·tî ya·yin wə·šê·ḵār wə·’al- tō·ḵə·lî kāl- ṭum·’āh kî- han·na·‘ar yih·yeh nə·zîr ’ĕ·lō·hîm min- hab·be·ṭen ‘aḏ- yō·wm mō·w·ṯōwWLC · 7

Then Manoah prayed to the LORD -, “Please, O Lord, let the man of God You sent us come… to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.”

𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃

מָנ֛וֹחַ וַיֶּעְתַּ֥ר אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר בִּ֣י אֲדוֹנָ֔י אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֞ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁלַ֗חְתָּ יָבוֹא־ נָ֥א אֵלֵ֔ינוּ עוֹד֙ וְיוֹרֵ֕נוּ מַֽה־ נַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַנַּ֥עַר הַיּוּלָּֽד׃ mā·nō·w·aḥ way·ye‘·tar ’el- Yah·weh way·yō·mar bî ’ă·ḏō·w·nāy ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer šā·laḥ·tā yā·ḇō·w- nā ’ê·lê·nū ‘ō·wḏ wə·yō·w·rê·nū mah- na·‘ă·śeh lan·na·‘ar hay·yūl·lāḏWLC · 8

And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God returned… to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her.

𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤄

הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע בְּק֣וֹל מָנ֑וֹחַ מַלְאַךְ֩ הָאֱלֹהִ֨ים וַיָּבֹ֣א ע֜וֹד אֶל־ הָאִשָּׁ֗ה וְהִיא֙ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה אִישָׁ֖הּ וּמָנ֥וֹחַ אֵ֥ין עִמָּֽהּ׃ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiš·ma‘ bə·qō·wl mā·nō·w·aḥ mal·’aḵ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yā·ḇō ‘ō·wḏ ’el- hā·’iš·šāh wə·hî yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ baś·śā·ḏeh ’î·šāh ū·mā·nō·w·aḥ ’ên ‘im·māhWLC · 9

The woman ran… quickly to tell her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the [other] day has reappeared…!”

𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉

לְאִישָׁ֑הּ וַתָּ֖רָץ וַתַּגֵּ֣ד וַתְּמַהֵר֙ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה הִנֵּ֨ה הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֥א אֵלָֽי׃ בַיּ֖וֹם נִרְאָ֤ה אֵלַי֙ lə·’î·šāh wat·tā·rāṣ wat·tag·gêḏ wat·tə·ma·hêr wat·tō·mer ’ê·lāw hā·’iš·šāh hin·nêh hā·’îš ’ă·šer- bā ’ê·lāy ḇay·yō·wm nir·’āh ’ê·layWLC · 10

So Manoah got up and followed… his wife. When he came to the man, he asked “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” “I am,” he said.

מָנ֖וֹחַ וַיָּ֛קָם וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֣י אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ וַיָּבֹא֙ אֶל־ הָאִ֔ישׁ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ הַאַתָּ֥ה הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבַּ֥רְתָּ אֶל־ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה אָֽנִי׃ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר mā·nō·w·aḥ way·yā·qām way·yê·leḵ ’a·ḥă·rê ’iš·tōw way·yā·ḇō ’el- hā·’îš way·yō·mer lōw ha·’at·tāh hā·’îš ’ă·šer- dib·bar·tā ’el- hā·’iš·šāh ’ā·nî way·yō·merWLC · 11

Then Manoah asked, “When your words come to pass, what will be the boy’s rule of life and mission?”

𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅

מָנ֔וֹחַ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר עַתָּ֖ה דְבָרֶ֑יךָ יָבֹ֣א מַה־ יִּֽהְיֶ֥ה הַנַּ֖עַר מִשְׁפַּט־ וּמַעֲשֵֽׂהוּ׃ mā·nō·w·aḥ way·yō·mer ‘at·tāh ḏə·ḇā·re·ḵā yā·ḇō mah- yih·yeh han·na·‘ar miš·paṭ- ū·ma·‘ă·śê·hūWLC · 12

So the angel of the LORD… answered Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I told her…

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋

מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר מָנ֑וֹחַ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה תִּשָּׁמֵֽר׃ מִכֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ אָמַ֥רְתִּי אֶל־ mal·’aḵ Yah·weh ’el- way·yō·mer mā·nō·w·aḥ hā·’iš·šāh tiš·šā·mêr mik·kōl ’ă·šer- ’ā·mar·tî ’el-WLC · 13

She must not eat anything that comes from the vine…, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean… She must do everything I have commanded her.”

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤄

לֹ֣א תֹאכַ֗ל מִכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ יֵצֵא֩ מִגֶּ֨פֶן הַיַּ֜יִן תֵּ֔שְׁתְּ וְיַ֤יִן וְשֵׁכָר֙ אַל־ תֹּאכַ֑ל וְכָל־ טֻמְאָ֖ה אַל־ תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃ כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ צִוִּיתִ֖יהָ lō ṯō·ḵal mik·kōl ’ă·šer- yê·ṣê mig·ge·p̄en hay·ya·yin tê·šət wə·ya·yin wə·šê·ḵār ’al- tō·ḵal wə·ḵāl ṭum·’āh ’al- tiš·mōr kōl ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wî·ṯî·hāWLC · 14

“Please stay here -,” Manoah… said to the angel of the LORD, “and we will prepare a young goat… for you.”

𐤍𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤊 𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊

נָּ֣א נַעְצְרָה־ אוֹתָ֔ךְ מָנ֖וֹחַ אֶל־ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֑ה וְנַעֲשֶׂ֥ה גְּדִ֥י עִזִּֽים׃ לְפָנֶ֖יךָ nā na‘·ṣə·rāh- ’ō·w·ṯāḵ mā·nō·w·aḥ ’el- way·yō·mer mal·’aḵ Yah·weh wə·na·‘ă·śeh gə·ḏî ‘iz·zîm lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵāWLC · 15

And the angel of the LORD replied “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah… did not know [that] it [was] the angel of the LORD.

Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to pass?”

𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤅𐤊 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤀

מָנ֛וֹחַ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֶל־ מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה מִ֣י שְׁמֶ֑ךָ כִּֽי־ וְכִבַּדְנֽוּךָ׃ דִבְרֶיךָ יָבֹ֥א mā·nō·w·aḥ way·yō·mer ’el- mal·’aḵ Yah·weh mî šə·me·ḵā kî- wə·ḵib·baḏ·nū·ḵā ḏiḇ·rɛ·ḵå̄ yā·ḇōWLC · 17

“Why… do you ask my name,” said the angel of the LORD -, “since it is beyond comprehension?”

𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤎

לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה תִּשְׁאַ֣ל לִשְׁמִ֑י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה לּוֹ֙ וְהוּא־ פֶ֛לִאי׃ס lām·māh zeh tiš·’al liš·mî way·yō·mer mal·’aḵ Yah·weh lō wə·hū- p̄ɛ·liWLC · 18

Then Manoah took a young goat… and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a marvelous thing.

מָנ֜וֹחַ אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֨ח גְּדִ֤י הָעִזִּים֙ וְאֶת־ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה וַיַּ֥עַל עַל־ הַצּ֖וּר לַֽיהוָ֑ה וּמָנ֥וֹחַ וְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ רֹאִֽים׃ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת וּמַפְלִ֣א mā·nō·w·aḥ ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ gə·ḏî hā·‘iz·zîm wə·’eṯ- ham·min·ḥāh way·ya·‘al ‘al- haṣ·ṣūr Yah·weh ū·mā·nō·w·aḥ wə·’iš·tōw rō·’îm la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ū·map̄·liWLC · 19

  • When the flame went up from the altar to the sky, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw [this], they fell facedown… to the ground.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤄𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤁𐤋𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄

וַיְהִי֩ הַלַּ֜הַב בַעֲל֨וֹת מֵעַ֤ל הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה מַלְאַךְ־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיַּ֥עַל הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ בְּלַ֣הַב וּמָנ֤וֹחַ וְאִשְׁתּוֹ֙ רֹאִ֔ים וַיִּפְּל֥וּ עַל־ פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם אָֽרְצָה׃ way·hî hal·la·haḇ ḇa·‘ă·lō·wṯ mê·‘al ham·miz·bê·aḥ haš·šā·may·māh mal·’aḵ- Yah·weh way·ya·‘al ham·miz·bê·aḥ bə·la·haḇ ū·mā·nō·w·aḥ wə·’iš·tōw rō·’îm way·yip·pə·lū ‘al- pə·nê·hem ’ā·rə·ṣāhWLC · 20

And when the angel of the LORD did not appear again… to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that it [had been] the angel of the LORD.

מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹא־ לְהֵרָאֹ֖ה יָ֤סַף עוֹד֙ אֶל־ מָנ֣וֹחַ וְאֶל־ אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ אָ֚ז מָנ֔וֹחַ יָדַ֣ע כִּֽי־ הֽוּא׃ מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה mal·’aḵ Yah·weh wə·lō- lə·hê·rā·’ōh yā·sap̄ ‘ō·wḏ ’el- mā·nō·w·aḥ wə·’el- ’iš·tōw ’āz mā·nō·w·aḥ yā·ḏa‘ kî- hū mal·’aḵ Yah·wehWLC · 21

“We are going to die,”… he said to his wife, “for we have seen God!”

מ֣וֹת נָמ֑וּת מָנ֛וֹחַ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֶל־ אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ כִּ֥י רָאִֽינוּ׃ אֱלֹהִ֖ים mō·wṯ nā·mūṯ mā·nō·w·aḥ way·yō·mer ’el- ’iš·tōw kî rā·’î·nū ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 22

But his wife replied “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us… this way.”

אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וַתֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ לוּ֩ יְהוָ֤ה חָפֵ֨ץ לַהֲמִיתֵ֙נוּ֙ לֹֽא־ לָקַ֤ח עֹלָ֣ה וּמִנְחָ֔ה מִיָּדֵ֙נוּ֙ וְלֹ֥א הֶרְאָ֖נוּ אֶת־ כָּל־ אֵ֑לֶּה הִשְׁמִיעָ֖נוּ וְכָעֵ֕ת לֹ֥א כָּזֹֽאת׃ ’iš·tōw wat·tō·mer lōw lū Yah·weh ḥā·p̄êṣ la·hă·mî·ṯê·nū lō- lā·qaḥ ‘ō·lāh ū·min·ḥāh mî·yā·ḏê·nū wə·lō her·’ā·nū ’eṯ- kāl- ’êl·leh hiš·mî·‘ā·nū wə·ḵā·‘êṯ lō kā·zōṯWLC · 23

So the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the LORD blessed him.

הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַתֵּ֤לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן הַנַּ֔עַר וַיִּגְדַּ֣ל יְהוָֽה׃ וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖הוּ hā·’iš·šāh wat·tê·leḏ bên wat·tiq·rā ’eṯ- šə·mōw šim·šō·wn han·na·‘ar way·yiḡ·dal Yah·weh way·ḇā·rə·ḵê·hūWLC · 24

And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him at Mahaneh-dan…, between Zorah… and Eshtaol.
