Chapter 15

Samson’s Revenge

Later on…, at the time of the wheat harvest, Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.

וַיְהִ֨י מִיָּמִ֜ים בִּימֵ֣י חִטִּ֗ים קְצִיר־ שִׁמְשׁ֤וֹן אֶת־ בִּגְדִ֣י עִזִּ֔ים וַיִּפְקֹ֨ד אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ אָבֹ֥אָה אֶל־ אִשְׁתִּ֖י הֶחָ֑דְרָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָבִ֖יהָ וְלֹֽא־ נְתָנ֥וֹ לָבֽוֹא׃ way·hî mî·yā·mîm bî·mê ḥiṭ·ṭîm qə·ṣîr- šim·šō·wn ’eṯ- biḡ·ḏî ‘iz·zîm way·yip̄·qōḏ ’iš·tōw ’ā·ḇō·’āh ’el- ’iš·tî he·ḥā·ḏə·rāh way·yō·mer ’ā·ḇî·hā wə·lō- nə·ṯā·nōw lā·ḇō·wWLC · 1

“I was sure… that you thoroughly hated her…,” said her father, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her instead.”

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָמֹ֤ר כִּי־ שָׂנֹ֣א שְׂנֵאתָ֔הּ אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙ אָבִ֗יהָ וָאֶתְּנֶ֖נָּה לְמֵרֵעֶ֑ךָ הֲלֹ֨א הַקְּטַנָּה֙ אֲחֹתָ֤הּ טוֹבָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נָּה נָ֥א תְּהִי־ לְךָ֖ תַּחְתֶּֽיהָ׃ way·yō·mer ’ā·mōr kî- śā·nō śə·nê·ṯāh ’ā·mar·tî ’ā·ḇî·hā wā·’et·tə·nen·nāh lə·mê·rê·‘e·ḵā hă·lō haq·qə·ṭan·nāh ’ă·ḥō·ṯāh ṭō·w·ḇāh mim·men·nāh nā tə·hî- lə·ḵā taḥ·te·hāWLC · 2

Samson said to them, “This time I will be blameless - in doing harm to the Philistines.”

𐤔𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌

שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הַפַּ֖עַם נִקֵּ֥יתִי כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֛י עִמָּ֖ם עֹשֶׂ֥ה רָעָֽה׃ מִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים šim·šō·wn way·yō·mer lā·hem hap·pa·‘am niq·qê·ṯî kî- ’ă·nî ‘im·mām ‘ō·śeh rā·‘āh mip·pə·liš·tîmWLC · 3

Then Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes. And he took torches, turned the foxes tail-to-tail…,… and fastened a torch between each pair of tails…

שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ וַיִּלְכֹּ֖ד שְׁלֹשׁ־ מֵא֣וֹת שׁוּעָלִ֑ים וַיִּקַּ֣ח לַפִּדִ֗ים וַיֶּ֤פֶן זָנָב֙ אֶל־ זָנָ֔ב וַיָּ֨שֶׂם אֶחָ֛ד לַפִּ֥יד בֵּין־ שְׁנֵ֥י הַזְּנָב֖וֹת בַּתָּֽוֶךְ׃ šim·šō·wn way·yê·leḵ way·yil·kōḏ šə·lōš- mê·’ō·wṯ šū·‘ā·lîm way·yiq·qaḥ lap·pi·ḏîm way·ye·p̄en zā·nāḇ ’el- zā·nāḇ way·yā·śem ’e·ḥāḏ lap·pîḏ bên- šə·nê haz·zə·nā·ḇō·wṯ bat·tā·weḵWLC · 4

Then he lit… the torches and released [the foxes] into the standing grain of the Philistines, burning up the piles of grain… and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤁𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤒𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤆𐤉𐤕

וַיַּבְעֶר־ אֵשׁ֙ בַּלַּפִּידִ֔ים וַיְשַׁלַּ֖ח בְּקָמ֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּבְעֵ֛ר מִגָּדִ֥ישׁ וְעַד־ קָמָ֖ה וְעַד־ כֶּ֥רֶם זָֽיִת׃ way·yaḇ·‘er- ’êš bal·lap·pî·ḏîm way·šal·laḥ bə·qā·mō·wṯ pə·liš·tîm way·yaḇ·‘êr mig·gā·ḏîš wə·‘aḏ- qā·māh wə·‘aḏ- ke·rem zā·yiṯWLC · 5

“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For - his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father - to death.

מִ֣י עָ֣שָׂה זֹאת֒ פְלִשְׁתִּים֮ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙ חֲתַ֣ן הַתִּמְנִ֔י וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ כִּ֚י לָקַ֣ח אֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַֽיִּתְּנָ֖הּ לְמֵרֵעֵ֑הוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיַּעֲל֣וּ וַיִּשְׂרְפ֥וּ אָבִ֖יהָ אוֹתָ֛הּ וְאֶת־ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ mî ‘ā·śāh zōṯ p̄ə·liš·tîm way·yō·mə·rū šim·šō·wn ḥă·ṯan hat·tim·nî way·yō·mə·rū kî lā·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’iš·tōw way·yit·tə·nāh lə·mê·rê·‘ê·hū p̄ə·liš·tîm way·ya·‘ă·lū way·yiś·rə·p̄ū ’ā·ḇî·hā ’ō·w·ṯāh wə·’eṯ- bā·’êšWLC · 6

And Samson told them, “Because you have done this, I will not rest until… I have taken vengeance upon you -.”

שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ אִֽם־ תַּעֲשׂ֖וּן כָּזֹ֑את אֶחְדָּֽל׃ כִּ֛י אִם־ נִקַּ֥מְתִּי בָכֶ֖ם וְאַחַ֥ר šim·šō·wn way·yō·mer lā·hem ’im- ta·‘ă·śūn kā·zōṯ ’eḥ·dāl kî ’im- niq·qam·tî ḇā·ḵem wə·’a·ḥarWLC · 7

And he struck them ruthlessly… with a great slaughter, and then went down and stayed in the cave at the rock of Etam.

𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤎𐤏𐤉𐤐 𐤎𐤋𐤏 𐤏𐤉𐤈𐤌𐤎

וַיַּ֨ךְ אוֹתָ֥ם שׁ֛וֹק עַל־ יָרֵ֖ךְ גְדוֹלָ֑ה מַכָּ֣ה וַיֵּ֣רֶד וַיֵּ֔שֶׁב בִּסְעִ֖יף סֶ֥לַע עֵיטָֽם׃ס way·yaḵ ’ō·w·ṯām šō·wq ‘al- yā·rêḵ ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh mak·kāh way·yê·reḏ way·yê·šeḇ bis·‘îp̄ se·la‘ ‘ê·ṭāmWLC · 8

Then the Philistines went up, camped in Judah, and deployed themselves near [the town of] Lehi.

𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤈𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤇𐤉

פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיַּעֲל֣וּ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בִּיהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּנָּטְשׁ֖וּ בַּלֶּֽחִי׃ p̄ə·liš·tîm way·ya·‘ă·lū way·ya·ḥă·nū bî·hū·ḏāh way·yin·nā·ṭə·šū bal·le·ḥîWLC · 9

“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines replied, “We have come to arrest Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”

לָמָ֖ה עֲלִיתֶ֣ם עָלֵ֑ינוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ עָלִ֔ינוּ לֶאֱס֤וֹר אֶת־ שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת ל֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר עָ֥שָׂה לָֽנוּ׃ lā·māh ‘ă·lî·ṯem ‘ā·lê·nū way·yō·mə·rū ’îš yə·hū·ḏāh way·yō·mə·rū ‘ā·lî·nū le·’ĕ·sō·wr ’eṯ- šim·šō·wn la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lōw ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh lā·nūWLC · 10

In response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked Samson, “Do you not realize that the Philistines rule over us? What… have you done to us?” “I have done to them what they did to me,” he replied

שְׁלֹשֶׁת֩ אֲלָפִ֨ים אִ֜ישׁ מִֽיהוּדָ֗ה וַיֵּרְד֡וּ אֶל־ סְעִיף֮ סֶ֣לַע עֵיטָם֒ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לְשִׁמְשׁ֗וֹן הֲלֹ֤א יָדַ֙עְתָּ֙ כִּֽי־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים מֹשְׁלִ֥ים בָּ֙נוּ֙ וּמַה־ זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ עָ֣שׂוּ לָהֶֽם׃ כֵּ֖ן כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ עָשִׂ֥יתִי לִ֔י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם šə·lō·šeṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’îš mî·hū·ḏāh way·yê·rə·ḏū ’el- sə·‘îp̄ se·la‘ ‘ê·ṭām way·yō·mə·rū lə·šim·šō·wn hă·lō yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- pə·liš·tîm mō·šə·lîm bā·nū ū·mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā lā·nū ‘ā·śū lā·hem kên ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî lî way·yō·mer lā·hemWLC · 11

But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and hand you over to… the Philistines.” Samson replied “Swear to me that you will not kill me {yourselves}.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤕𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤐𐤂𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤉

וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ לוֹ֙ יָרַ֔דְנוּ לֶאֱסָרְךָ֣ לְתִתְּךָ֖ בְּיַד־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הִשָּׁבְע֣וּ לִ֔י אַתֶּֽם׃ פֶּֽן־ תִּפְגְּע֥וּן בִּ֖י way·yō·mə·rū lōw yā·raḏ·nū le·’ĕ·sā·rə·ḵā lə·ṯit·tə·ḵā bə·yaḏ- pə·liš·tîm šim·šō·wn way·yō·mer lā·hem hiš·šā·ḇə·‘ū lî ’at·tem pen- tip̄·gə·‘ūn bîWLC · 12

“No,” they answered “we will not… kill you, but we will tie you up securely… and hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.

לֹ֚א וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ ל֣וֹ לֵאמֹ֗ר לֹ֣א נְמִיתֶ֑ךָ וְהָמֵ֖ת כִּֽי־ אָסֹ֤ר נֶֽאֱסָרְךָ֙ וּנְתַנּ֣וּךָ בְיָדָ֔ם וַיַּאַסְרֻ֗הוּ בִּשְׁנַ֙יִם֙ חֲדָשִׁ֔ים עֲבֹתִ֣ים וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּהוּ מִן־ הַסָּֽלַע׃ lō way·yō·mə·rū lōw lê·mōr lō nə·mî·ṯe·ḵā wə·hā·mêṯ kî- ’ā·sōr ne·’ĕ·sā·rə·ḵā ū·nə·ṯan·nū·ḵā ḇə·yā·ḏām way·ya·’as·ru·hū biš·na·yim ḥă·ḏā·šîm ‘ă·ḇō·ṯîm way·ya·‘ă·lū·hū min- has·sā·la‘WLC · 13

When [Samson] arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt… flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.

הוּא־ בָ֣א עַד־ לֶ֔חִי וּפִלְשִׁתִּ֖ים הֵרִ֣יעוּ לִקְרָאת֑וֹ ר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֗ה וַתִּצְלַ֨ח עָלָ֜יו הָעֲבֹתִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ זְרוֹעוֹתָ֗יו וַתִּהְיֶ֨ינָה בָּעֲר֣וּ בָאֵ֔שׁ כַּפִּשְׁתִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֱסוּרָ֖יו וַיִּמַּ֥סּוּ מֵעַ֥ל יָדָֽיו׃ hū- ḇā ‘aḏ- le·ḥî ū·p̄il·šit·tīm hê·rî·‘ū liq·rā·ṯōw rū·aḥ Yah·weh wat·tiṣ·laḥ ‘ā·lāw hā·‘ă·ḇō·ṯîm ’ă·šer ‘al- zə·rō·w·‘ō·w·ṯāw wat·tih·ye·nāh bā·‘ă·rū ḇā·’êš kap·piš·tîm ’ă·šer ’ĕ·sū·rāw way·yim·mas·sū mê·‘al yā·ḏāwWLC · 14

He found the fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and struck down a thousand men.

וַיִּמְצָ֥א טְרִיָּ֑ה לְחִֽי־ חֲמ֖וֹר וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָדוֹ֙ וַיִּקָּחֶ֔הָ וַיַּךְ־ בָּ֖הּ אֶ֥לֶף אִֽישׁ׃ way·yim·ṣā ṭə·rî·yāh lə·ḥî- ḥă·mō·wr way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw way·yiq·qā·ḥe·hā way·yaḵ- bāh ’e·lep̄ ’îšWLC · 15

Then Samson said: “With the jawbone of a donkey I have piled them into heaps. With the jawbone of a donkey I have slain a thousand men.”

שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בִּלְחִ֣י הַחֲמ֔וֹר חֲמ֖וֹר חֲמֹרָתָ֑יִם בִּלְחִ֣י הַחֲמ֔וֹר הִכֵּ֖יתִי אֶ֥לֶף אִֽישׁ׃ šim·šō·wn way·yō·mer bil·ḥî ha·ḥă·mō·wr ḥă·mō·wr ḥă·mō·rā·ṯā·yim bil·ḥî ha·ḥă·mō·wr hik·kê·ṯî ’e·lep̄ ’îšWLC · 16

And when [Samson] had finished speaking, he cast the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place vvv Ramath-lehi.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤉

וַֽיְהִי֙ כְּכַלֹּת֣וֹ לְדַבֵּ֔ר וַיַּשְׁלֵ֥ךְ הַלְּחִ֖י מִיָּד֑וֹ וַיִּקְרָ֛א הַה֖וּא לַמָּק֥וֹם רָ֥מַת לֶֽחִי׃ way·hî kə·ḵal·lō·ṯōw lə·ḏab·bêr way·yaš·lêḵ hal·lə·ḥî mî·yā·ḏōw way·yiq·rā ha·hū lam·mā·qō·wm rā·maṯ le·ḥîWLC · 17

And being very thirsty, [Samson] cried out to the LORD…, “You have accomplished this great deliverance through Your servant. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”

𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤋𐤉𐤌

מְאֹד֒ וַיִּצְמָא֮ וַיִּקְרָ֤א אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר אַתָּה֙ נָתַ֣תָּ הַזֹּ֑את הַגְּדֹלָ֖ה הַתְּשׁוּעָ֥ה בְיַֽד־ עַבְדְּךָ֔ אֶת־ וְעַתָּה֙ אָמ֣וּת בַּצָּמָ֔א וְנָפַלְתִּ֖י בְּיַ֥ד הָעֲרֵלִֽים׃ mə·’ōḏ way·yiṣ·mā way·yiq·rā ’el- Yah·weh way·yō·mar ’at·tāh nā·ṯa·tā haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·lāh hat·tə·šū·‘āh ḇə·yaḏ- ‘aḇ·də·ḵā ’eṯ- wə·‘at·tāh ’ā·mūṯ baṣ·ṣā·mā wə·nā·p̄al·tî bə·yaḏ hā·‘ă·rê·lîmWLC · 18

So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why… he named it… vvv En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.

אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת־ וַיִּבְקַ֨ע הַמַּכְתֵּ֣שׁ אֲשֶׁר־ בַּלֶּ֗חִי מַ֙יִם֙ וַיֵּצְא֨וּ מִמֶּ֤נּוּ וַיֵּ֔שְׁתְּ רוּח֖וֹ וַתָּ֥שָׁב וַיֶּ֑חִי עַל־ כֵּ֣ן׀ קָרָ֣א שְׁמָ֗הּ עֵ֤ין הַקּוֹרֵא֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּלֶּ֔חִי עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yiḇ·qa‘ ham·maḵ·têš ’ă·šer- bal·le·ḥî ma·yim way·yê·ṣə·’ū mim·men·nū way·yê·šət rū·ḥōw wat·tā·šāḇ way·ye·ḥî ‘al- kên qā·rā šə·māh ‘ên haq·qō·w·rê ’ă·šer bal·le·ḥî ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wmWLC · 19

And [Samson] judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
