Chapter 19
The Crime of the Benjamites

Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel,… a Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself vvv a concubine vvv from Bethlehem in Judah.

וַיְהִי֙ הָהֵ֔ם בַּיָּמִ֣ים אֵ֣ין וּמֶ֖לֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י׀ אִ֣ישׁ לֵוִ֗י גָּ֚ר בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר־ אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ לוֹ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה פִילֶ֔גֶשׁ מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָֽה׃ way·hî hā·hêm bay·yā·mîm ’ên ū·me·leḵ bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·hî ’îš lê·wî gār bə·yar·kə·ṯê har- ’ep̄·ra·yim way·yiq·qaḥ- lōw ’iš·šāh p̄î·le·ḡeš mib·bêṯ le·ḥem yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in vvv Bethlehem in Judah. After she had been there four months,

פִּֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ וַתִּזְנֶ֤ה עָלָיו֙ וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ מֵֽאִתּוֹ֙ אֶל־ אָבִ֔יהָ בֵּ֣ית אֶל־ בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָ֑ה וַתְּהִי־ שָׁ֕ם יָמִ֖ים אַרְבָּעָ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃ pî·laḡ·šōw wat·tiz·neh ‘ā·lāw wat·tê·leḵ mê·’it·tōw ’el- ’ā·ḇî·hā bêṯ ’el- bêṯ le·ḥem yə·hū·ḏāh wat·tə·hî- šām yā·mîm ’ar·bā·‘āh ḥo·ḏā·šîm — WLC · 2

her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant… and a pair of donkeys. So [the girl] brought him into her father’s house, and when [her] father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.

אִישָׁ֜הּ וַיָּ֨קָם וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אַחֲרֶ֗יהָ לְדַבֵּ֤ר לִבָּהּ֙ עַל־ לַהֲשִׁיבוֹ וְנַעֲר֥וֹ עִמּ֖וֹ וְצֶ֣מֶד חֲמֹרִ֑ים וַתְּבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ אָבִ֔יהָ בֵּ֣ית הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה אֲבִ֣י וַיִּרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ וַיִּשְׂמַ֖ח לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃ ’î·šāh way·yā·qām way·yê·leḵ ’a·ḥă·re·hā lə·ḏab·bêr lib·bāh ‘al- la·hă·šī·ḇō wə·na·‘ă·rōw ‘im·mōw wə·ṣe·meḏ ḥă·mō·rîm wat·tə·ḇî·’ê·hū ’ā·ḇî·hā bêṯ han·na·‘ă·rāh ’ă·ḇî way·yir·’ê·hū way·yiś·maḥ liq·rā·ṯōw — WLC · 3

His father-in-law, the girl’s father, persuaded him to stay…, so he remained with him three days, eating, drinking, and lodging there.

חֹֽתְנוֹ֙ הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה אֲבִ֣י וַיֶּחֱזַק־ בּ֤וֹ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אִתּ֖וֹ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַיֹּאכְלוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ שָֽׁם׃ ḥō·ṯə·nōw han·na·‘ă·rāh ’ă·ḇî way·ye·ḥĕ·zaq- bōw way·yê·šeḇ ’it·tōw šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîm way·yō·ḵə·lū way·yiš·tū way·yā·lî·nū šām — WLC · 4

- On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a morsel of bread, and then you can go.”

So they sat down and the two of them ate and drank together. Then the girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your heart be merry.”

וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם וַיֹּאכְל֧וּ וַיִּשְׁתּ֑וּ יַחְדָּ֖ו הַֽנַּעֲרָה֙ אֲבִ֤י וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אֶל־ הָאִ֔ישׁ נָ֥א הֽוֹאֶל־ וְלִ֖ין לִבֶּֽךָ׃ וְיִטַ֥ב way·yê·šə·ḇū šə·nê·hem way·yō·ḵə·lū way·yiš·tū yaḥ·dāw han·na·‘ă·rāh ’ă·ḇî way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’îš nā hō·w·’el- wə·lîn lib·be·ḵā wə·yi·ṭaḇ — WLC · 6

The man got up to depart, but his father-in-law… persuaded him, so he stayed there that night.

הָאִ֖ישׁ וַיָּ֥קָם לָלֶ֑כֶת חֹתְנ֔וֹ וַיָּ֖שָׁב וַיִּפְצַר־ בּוֹ֙ וַיָּ֥לֶן שָֽׁם׃ hā·’îš way·yā·qām lā·le·ḵeṯ ḥō·ṯə·nōw way·yā·šāḇ way·yip̄·ṣar- bōw way·yā·len šām — WLC · 7

On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart, but the girl’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they waited until late afternoon… and the two of them ate.

הַחֲמִישִׁי֮ בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם בַּבֹּ֜קֶר לָלֶכֶת֒ הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ה אֲבִ֣י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ נָא֙ סְעָד־ לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ וְהִֽתְמַהְמְה֖וּ עַד־ נְט֣וֹת הַיּ֑וֹם שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ ha·ḥă·mî·šî bay·yō·wm way·yaš·kêm bab·bō·qer lā·le·ḵeṯ han·na·‘ă·rāh ’ă·ḇî way·yō·mer nā sə·‘āḏ- lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā wə·hiṯ·mah·mə·hū ‘aḏ- nə·ṭō·wṯ hay·yō·wm šə·nê·hem way·yō·ḵə·lū — WLC · 8

When the man got up to depart… with his concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please spend the night… See, the day is almost over. Spend the night here, that your heart may be merry. Then you can get up early tomorrow for your journey… home.”

הָאִישׁ֙ וַיָּ֤קָם לָלֶ֔כֶת ה֥וּא וּפִילַגְשׁ֖וֹ וְנַעֲר֑וֹ חֹתְנ֣וֹ הַֽנַּעֲרָ֡ה אֲבִ֣י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֣וֹ הִנֵּ֣ה הַיּ֜וֹם רָפָ֨ה לַעֲרֹ֗ב נָא֩ לִֽינוּ־ נָ֞א הִנֵּ֨ה הַיּוֹם֙ חֲנ֤וֹת לִ֥ין פֹּה֙ לְבָבֶ֔ךָ וְיִיטַ֣ב וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְדַרְכְּכֶ֔ם וְהָלַכְתָּ֖ לְאֹהָלֶֽךָ׃ hā·’îš way·yā·qām lā·le·ḵeṯ hū ū·p̄î·laḡ·šōw wə·na·‘ă·rōw ḥō·ṯə·nōw han·na·‘ă·rāh ’ă·ḇî way·yō·mer lōw hin·nêh hay·yō·wm rā·p̄āh la·‘ă·rōḇ nā lî·nū- nā hin·nêh hay·yō·wm ḥă·nō·wṯ lîn pōh lə·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā wə·yî·ṭaḇ wə·hiš·kam·tem mā·ḥār lə·ḏar·kə·ḵem wə·hā·laḵ·tā lə·’ō·hā·le·ḵā — WLC · 9

But the man was unwilling… to spend the night. He got up and departed, and arrived… opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine -.

הָאִישׁ֙ וְלֹֽא־ אָבָ֤ה לָל֔וּן וַיָּ֣קָם וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיָּבֹא֙ עַד־ נֹ֣כַח יְב֔וּס הִ֖יא יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעִמּ֗וֹ צֶ֤מֶד חֲבוּשִׁ֔ים חֲמוֹרִים֙ וּפִילַגְשׁ֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃ hā·’îš wə·lō- ’ā·ḇāh lā·lūn way·yā·qām way·yê·leḵ way·yā·ḇō ‘aḏ- nō·ḵaḥ yə·ḇūs hî yə·rū·šā·lim wə·‘im·mōw ṣe·meḏ ḥă·ḇū·šîm ḥă·mō·w·rîm ū·p̄î·laḡ·šōw ‘im·mōw — WLC · 10

When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master,… “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and spend the night here.”

הֵ֣ם עִם־ יְב֔וּס וְהַיּ֖וֹם מְאֹ֑ד רַ֣ד הַנַּ֜עַר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ אֲדֹנָ֗יו לְכָה־ נָּ֛א וְנָס֛וּרָה אֶל־ הַזֹּ֖את הַיְבוּסִ֥י עִֽיר־ וְנָלִ֥ין בָּֽהּ׃ hêm ‘im- yə·ḇūs wə·hay·yō·wm mə·’ōḏ raḏ han·na·‘ar way·yō·mer ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nāw lə·ḵāh- nā wə·nā·sū·rāh ’el- haz·zōṯ hay·ḇū·sî ‘îr- wə·nā·lîn bāh — WLC · 11

But his master replied -, “We will not turn aside to the city of foreigners, where there are no Israelites… We will go on to Gibeah.”
𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤄
אֲדֹנָ֔יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ לֹ֤א נָסוּר֙ אֶל־ עִ֣יר נָכְרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־ מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵ֑נָּה וְעָבַ֖רְנוּ עַד־ גִּבְעָֽה׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāw way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw lō nā·sūr ’el- ‘îr nā·ḵə·rî ’ă·šer lō- mib·bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl hên·nāh wə·‘ā·ḇar·nū ‘aḏ- giḇ·‘āh — WLC · 12

He continued -, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah.”

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְנַעֲר֔וֹ לְךָ֥ וְנִקְרְבָ֖ה בְּאַחַ֣ד הַמְּקֹמ֑וֹת וְלַ֥נּוּ בַגִּבְעָ֖ה א֥וֹ בָרָמָֽה׃ way·yō·mer lə·na·‘ă·rōw lə·ḵå̄ wə·niq·rə·ḇāh bə·’a·ḥaḏ ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ wə·lan·nū ḇag·giḇ·‘āh ’ōw ḇā·rā·māh — WLC · 13

So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.

וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ וַתָּבֹ֤א לָהֶם֙ אֵ֥צֶל הַגִּבְעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְבִנְיָמִֽן׃ way·yê·lê·ḵū way·ya·‘aḇ·rū haš·še·meš wat·tā·ḇō lā·hem ’ê·ṣel hag·giḇ·‘āh ’ă·šer lə·ḇin·yā·min — WLC · 14

They stopped… to go in and lodge in Gibeah. The Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one would take them into his home for the night.

While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city - surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house -, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”

“Get up,” he told her… “Let us go.” But there was no response. So the man… put her on his donkey and set out for home.
