Chapter 6

Midian Oppresses Israel

1

Again the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD; so He delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years,

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌

בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָ֛ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם בְּיַד־ מִדְיָ֖ן שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘ă·śū hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yit·tə·nêm bə·yaḏ- miḏ·yān še·ḇa‘ šā·nîmWLC · 1

and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the Israelites… prepared shelters for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

יַד־ מִדְיָ֖ן וַתָּ֥עָז עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִפְּנֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־ עָשֽׂוּ הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ לָהֶ֣ם׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים וְאֶת־ הַמְּעָר֖וֹת וְאֶת־ הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃ yaḏ- miḏ·yān wat·tā·‘āz ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl mip·pə·nê miḏ·yān bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- ‘ā·śū ham·min·hā·rō·wṯ lā·hem ’ă·šer be·hā·rîm wə·’eṯ- ham·mə·‘ā·rō·wṯ wə·’eṯ- ham·mə·ṣā·ḏō·wṯWLC · 2

vvv Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east would come up and invade them,

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

וְהָיָ֖ה אִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל זָרַ֣ע מִדְיָ֧ן וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק וּבְנֵי־ קֶ֖דֶם וְעָלָ֨ה וְעָל֥וּ עָלָֽיו׃ wə·hā·yāh ’im- yiś·rā·’êl zā·ra‘ miḏ·yān wa·‘ă·mā·lêq ū·ḇə·nê- qe·ḏem wə·‘ā·lāh wə·‘ā·lū ‘ā·lāwWLC · 3

encamping against them as far as… Gaza and destroying the produce of the land. They left Israel with no sustenance, neither sheep nor oxen nor donkeys.

𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤊 𐤏𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓

וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם עַד־ בּוֹאֲךָ֖ עַזָּ֑ה וַיַּשְׁחִ֙יתוּ֙ אֶת־ יְב֣וּל הָאָ֔רֶץ יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְלֹֽא־ מִֽחְיָה֙ וְשֶׂ֥ה וָשׁ֖וֹר וַחֲמֽוֹר׃ way·ya·ḥă·nū ‘ă·lê·hem ‘aḏ- bō·w·’ă·ḵā ‘az·zāh way·yaš·ḥî·ṯū ’eṯ- yə·ḇūl hā·’ā·reṣ yaš·’î·rū bə·yiś·rā·’êl wə·lō- miḥ·yāh wə·śeh wā·šō·wr wa·ḥă·mō·wrWLC · 4

For the Midianites came with their livestock… and their tents like a great swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable…, and they entered the land to ravage it.

Israel was greatly impoverished by Midian, and the Israelites… cried out to the LORD.

יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מְאֹ֖ד וַיִּדַּ֧ל מִפְּנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּזְעֲק֥וּ אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃פ yiś·rā·’êl mə·’ōḏ way·yid·dal mip·pə·nê miḏ·yān ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·wehWLC · 6

Now when the Israelites… cried out to the LORD because of… Midian,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍

וַיְהִ֕י כִּֽי־ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל זָעֲק֥וּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה עַ֖ל אֹד֥וֹת מִדְיָֽן׃ way·hî kî- ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl zā·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh ‘al ’ō·ḏō·wṯ miḏ·yānWLC · 7

[He]… sent them… a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, - out of the house of slavery.

יְהוָ֛ה אִ֥ישׁ וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל נָבִ֖יא וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָהֶ֜ם כֹּה־ יְהוָ֣ה׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָמַ֥ר אָנֹכִ֞י הֶעֱלֵ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וָאֹצִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃ Yah·weh ’îš way·yiš·laḥ ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl nā·ḇî way·yō·mer lā·hem kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ’ā·nō·ḵî he·‘ĕ·lê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem mim·miṣ·ra·yim wā·’ō·ṣî ’eṯ·ḵem mib·bêṯ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏîmWLC · 8

I delivered you out of the hands of Egypt [and] all your oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.

𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤂𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤌

וָאַצִּ֤ל אֶתְכֶם֙ מִיַּ֣ד מִצְרַ֔יִם וּמִיַּ֖ד כָּל־ לֹחֲצֵיכֶ֑ם וָאֲגָרֵ֤שׁ אוֹתָם֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וָאֶתְּנָ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ אַרְצָֽם׃ wā·’aṣ·ṣil ’eṯ·ḵem mî·yaḏ miṣ·ra·yim ū·mî·yaḏ kāl- lō·ḥă·ṣê·ḵem wā·’ă·ḡā·rêš ’ō·w·ṯām mip·pə·nê·ḵem wā·’et·tə·nāh lā·ḵem ’eṯ- ’ar·ṣāmWLC · 9

And I said to you: ‘I am the LORD your God. You must not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’ But you did not obey Me.”…

The Call of Gideon

Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash vvv the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites.

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤇𐤁𐤈 𐤇𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤎 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍

And the angel of the LORD appeared to [Gideon] and said…, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”

מַלְּאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּרָ֥א אֵלָ֖יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו יְהוָ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ גִּבּ֥וֹר הֶחָֽיִל׃ mal·lə·ʾaḵ Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw Yah·weh ‘im·mə·ḵā gib·bō·wr he·ḥā·yilWLC · 12

“Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied -, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י גִּדְעוֹן֙ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֤יו יְהוָה֙ וְיֵ֤שׁ עִמָּ֔נוּ וְלָ֥מָּה כָּל־ זֹ֑את מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ וְאַיֵּ֣ה כָֽל־ נִפְלְאֹתָ֡יו אֲשֶׁר֩ אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ סִפְּרוּ־ לָ֨נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלֹ֤א יְהוָ֔ה הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְעַתָּה֙ יְהוָ֔ה נְטָשָׁ֣נוּ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ בְּכַף־ מִדְיָֽן׃ bî ’ă·ḏō·nî giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw Yah·weh wə·yêš ‘im·mā·nū wə·lām·māh kāl- zōṯ mə·ṣā·’aṯ·nū wə·’ay·yêh ḵāl nip̄·lə·’ō·ṯāw ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū sip·pə·rū- lā·nū lê·mōr hă·lō Yah·weh he·‘ĕ·lā·nū mim·miṣ·ra·yim wə·‘at·tāh Yah·weh nə·ṭā·šā·nū way·yit·tə·nê·nū bə·ḵap̄- miḏ·yānWLC · 13

The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have… and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤊𐤇𐤊 𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤐 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤊

יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּ֤פֶן אֵלָיו֙ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֚ךְ בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ זֶ֔ה וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִכַּ֣ף מִדְיָ֑ן הֲלֹ֖א שְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃ Yah·weh way·yi·p̄en ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer lêḵ bə·ḵō·ḥă·ḵā zeh wə·hō·wō·ša‘·tā ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl mik·kap̄ miḏ·yān hă·lō šə·laḥ·tî·ḵāWLC · 14

“Please, my Lord,” [Gideon] replied -, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”

בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֔י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ בַּמָּ֥ה אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִנֵּ֤ה אַלְפִּי֙ הַדַּ֣ל בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה וְאָנֹכִ֥י הַצָּעִ֖יר אָבִֽי׃ בְּבֵ֥ית bî ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw bam·māh ’ō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl hin·nêh ’al·pî had·dal bim·naš·šeh wə·’ā·nō·ḵî haṣ·ṣā·‘îr ’ā·ḇî bə·ḇêṯWLC · 15

“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied -, “and you will strike down [all] the Midianites as one man.”

Gideon answered -, “If… I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that [it is] You speaking with me.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤍𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤉

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אִם־ נָ֛א מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ לִּי֙ א֔וֹת שָׁאַתָּ֖ה מְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמִּֽי׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ’im- nā mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā lî ’ō·wṯ šā·’at·tāh mə·ḏab·bêr ‘im·mîWLC · 17

Please do not depart from this [place] until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set [it] before You.” And [the LORD] said, “I will stay until you return.”

נָ֨א אַל־ תָמֻ֤שׁ מִזֶּה֙ עַד־ בֹּאִ֣י אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ אֶת־ מִנְחָתִ֔י וְהִנַּחְתִּ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אָנֹכִ֥י אֵשֵׁ֖ב עַ֥ד שׁוּבֶֽךָ׃ nā ’al- ṯā·muš miz·zeh ‘aḏ- bō·’î ’ê·le·ḵā wə·hō·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ- min·ḥā·ṯî wə·hin·naḥ·tî lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā way·yō·mar ’ā·nō·ḵî ’ê·šêḇ ‘aḏ šū·ḇe·ḵāWLC · 18

So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat… and unleavened bread and an ephah of flour. He placed the meat in a basket and the broth… in a pot and brought them out to present to Him under the oak.

וְגִדְע֣וֹן בָּ֗א וַיַּ֤עַשׂ גְּדִֽי־ עִזִּים֙ מַצּ֔וֹת וְאֵיפַת־ קֶ֣מַח שָׂ֣ם הַבָּשָׂר֙ בַּסַּ֔ל וְהַמָּרַ֖ק שָׂ֣ם בַּפָּר֑וּר וַיּוֹצֵ֥א וַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃ס אֵלָ֛יו אֶל־ תַּ֥חַת הָאֵלָ֖ה wə·ḡiḏ·‘ō·wn bā way·ya·‘aś gə·ḏî- ‘iz·zîm maṣ·ṣō·wṯ wə·’ê·p̄aṯ- qe·maḥ śām hab·bā·śār bas·sal wə·ham·mā·raq śām bap·pā·rūr way·yō·w·ṣê way·yag·gaš ’ê·lāw ’el- ta·ḥaṯ hā·’ê·lāhWLC · 19

And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, lay [them] on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And [Gideon] did so.

מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו קַ֣ח אֶת־ הַבָּשָׂ֤ר וְאֶת־ הַמַּצּוֹת֙ וְהַנַּח֙ אֶל־ הַלָּ֔ז הַסֶּ֣לַע וְאֶת־ שְׁפ֑וֹךְ הַמָּרַ֖ק וַיַּ֖עַשׂ כֵּֽן׃ mal·’aḵ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw qaḥ ’eṯ- hab·bā·śār wə·’eṯ- ham·maṣ·ṣō·wṯ wə·han·naḥ ’el- hal·lāz has·se·la‘ wə·’eṯ- šə·p̄ō·wḵ ham·mā·raq way·ya·‘aś kênWLC · 20

Then the angel of the LORD extended the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. And fire flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.

When Gideon realized that it [was] the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD!… I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”

גִּדְע֔וֹן וַיַּ֣רְא כִּֽי־ ה֑וּאס מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה גִּדְע֗וֹן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲהָהּ֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֤ן רָאִ֙יתִי֙ מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה פָּנִ֖ים אֶל־ פָּנִֽים׃ giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yar kî- hūs mal·’aḵ Yah·weh giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yō·mer ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh kî- ‘al- kên rā·’î·ṯî mal·’aḵ Yah·weh pā·nîm ’el- pā·nîmWLC · 22

But the LORD said to him, “Peace [be] with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”

So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah vvv of the Abiezrites.

Gideon Destroys Baal’s Altar

  • On that very night the LORD said to [Gideon], “Take your father’s young bull… and a second bull seven years old, tear down your father’s altar to Baal, - and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤎𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤄𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

וַיְהִי֮ הַהוּא֒ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ קַ֤ח אֶת־ לְאָבִ֔יךָ פַּר־ הַשּׁוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הַשֵּׁנִ֖י וּפַ֥ר שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים וְהָרַסְתָּ֗ אֶת־ לְאָבִ֔יךָ מִזְבַּ֤ח הַבַּ֙עַל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר וְאֶת־ תִּכְרֹֽת׃ הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָ֖יו way·hî ha·hū bal·lay·lāh Yah·weh way·yō·mer lōw qaḥ ’eṯ- lə·’ā·ḇî·ḵā par- haš·šō·wr ’ă·šer haš·šê·nî ū·p̄ar še·ḇa‘ šā·nîm wə·hā·ras·tā ’eṯ- lə·’ā·ḇî·ḵā miz·baḥ hab·ba·‘al ’ă·šer wə·’eṯ- tiḵ·rōṯ hā·’ă·šê·rāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·lāwWLC · 25

Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”

So Gideon took ten vvv of his servants and did as the LORD… had told him… But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did [it] by night [rather than] in the daytime.

When the men of the city got up in the morning, there was Baal’s altar torn down, with the Asherah pole cut down beside it and the second bull offered up on the newly built altar.

אַנְשֵׁ֤י הָעִיר֙ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּ֤ה הַבַּ֔עַל מִזְבַּ֣ח נֻתַּץ֙ וְהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ כֹּרָ֑תָה עָלָ֖יו וְאֵת֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י הַפָּ֣ר הֹֽעֲלָ֔ה עַל־ הַבָּנֽוּי׃ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ ’an·šê hā·‘îr way·yaš·kî·mū bab·bō·qer wə·hin·nêh hab·ba·‘al miz·baḥ nut·taṣ wə·hā·’ă·šê·rāh ’ă·šer- kō·rā·ṯāh ‘ā·lāw wə·’êṯ haš·šê·nî hap·pār hō·‘ă·lāh ‘al- hab·bā·nui ham·miz·bê·aḥWLC · 28

“Who did… this?” they said to one another. And after they had investigated thoroughly…, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did… it.”

Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has torn down Baal’s… altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”

But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you contending for Baal? Are you trying to save him? Whoever pleads his case… will be put to death by morning! If [Baal] is a god, let him contend for himself with the one who has torn down his altar.”

So on that day… Gideon was called… Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend with him,” because he had torn down [Baal’s] altar.

The Sign of the Fleece

Then all the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east gathered together, crossed over [the Jordan], and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤉𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤀𐤋

וְכָל־ מִדְיָ֧ן וַעֲמָלֵ֛ק וּבְנֵי־ קֶ֖דֶם נֶאֶסְפ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֑ו וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ wə·ḵāl miḏ·yān wa·‘ă·mā·lêq ū·ḇə·nê- qe·ḏem ne·’es·p̄ū yaḥ·dāw way·ya·‘aḇ·rū way·ya·ḥă·nū bə·‘ê·meq yiz·rə·‘elWLC · 33

So the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, who blew the ram’s horn and rallied the Abiezrites behind him.

𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤒𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅

  • Calling them to arms, [Gideon] sent messengers throughout Manasseh, as well as - Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, so that they came up to meet him.

Then Gideon said to God, “If… You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said,

𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕

גִּדְע֖וֹן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים אִם־ יֶשְׁךָ֞ מוֹשִׁ֧יעַ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’im- yeš·ḵā mō·wō·šî·a‘ yiś·rā·’êl bə·yā·ḏî ’eṯ- ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tāWLC · 36

then behold, I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only… on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”

הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י מַצִּ֛יג אֶת־ גִּזַּ֥ת הַצֶּ֖מֶר בַּגֹּ֑רֶן אִ֡ם יִהְיֶ֨ה טַל֩ לְבַדָּ֗הּ וְעַל־ עַֽל־ הַגִּזָּ֜ה כָּל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ חֹ֔רֶב וְיָדַעְתִּ֗י כִּֽי־ תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî maṣ·ṣîḡ ’eṯ- giz·zaṯ haṣ·ṣe·mer bag·gō·ren ’im yih·yeh ṭal lə·ḇad·dāh wə·‘al- ‘al- hag·giz·zāh kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ḥō·reḇ wə·yā·ḏa‘·tî kî- ṯō·wō·šî·a‘ yiś·rā·’êl bə·yā·ḏî ’eṯ- ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tāWLC · 37

And that is what happened. When [Gideon] arose the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew…— vvv a bowlful of water.

כֵ֕ן וַיְהִי־ וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיָּ֖זַר אֶת־ הַגִּזָּ֑ה וַיִּ֤מֶץ מִן־ טַל֙ הַגִּזָּ֔ה מְל֥וֹא הַסֵּ֖פֶל מָֽיִם׃ ḵên way·hî- way·yaš·kêm mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ way·yā·zar ’eṯ- hag·giz·zāh way·yi·meṣ min- ṭal hag·giz·zāh mə·lō·w has·sê·p̄el mā·yimWLC · 38

Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry… with me; let me speak one more time… Please allow me… one more test with the fleece. This time let it be dry…, and the ground covered… with dew.”

גִּדְעוֹן֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים אַל־ יִ֤חַר אַפְּךָ֙ בִּ֔י וַאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה אַ֣ךְ הַפָּ֑עַם נָּא־ רַק־ הַפַּ֙עַם֙ אֲנַסֶּ֤ה בַּגִּזָּ֔ה נָ֨א יְהִי־ חֹ֤רֶב אֶל־ הַגִּזָּה֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ הָאָ֖רֶץ יִֽהְיֶה־ כָּל־ וְעַל־ טָּֽל׃ giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’al- yi·ḥar ’ap·pə·ḵā bî wa·’ă·ḏab·bə·rāh ’aḵ hap·pā·‘am nā- raq- hap·pa·‘am ’ă·nas·seh bag·giz·zāh nā yə·hî- ḥō·reḇ ’el- hag·giz·zāh lə·ḇad·dāh hā·’ā·reṣ yih·yeh- kāl- wə·‘al- ṭālWLC · 39

And that night God did so. Only… the fleece was dry,… and dew covered… the ground.
