Chapter 9

Abimelech’s Conspiracy

1

Now Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers at Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother… -,

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

“Please ask… all the leaders of Shechem, ‘… Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man -?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”

נָ֞א דַּבְּרוּ־ בְּאָזְנֵ֨י כָל־ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶם֮ מַה־ טּ֣וֹב לָכֶם֒ שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֗ישׁ כֹּ֚ל בְּנֵ֣י יְרֻבַּ֔עַל הַמְשֹׁ֨ל בָּכֶ֜ם אִם־ אֶחָ֑ד אִ֣ישׁ מְשֹׁ֥ל בָּכֶ֖ם וּזְכַרְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־ אָנִֽי׃ וּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם עַצְמֵכֶם nā dab·bə·rū- bə·’ā·zə·nê ḵāl ba·‘ă·lê šə·ḵem mah- ṭō·wḇ lā·ḵem šiḇ·‘îm ’îš kōl bə·nê yə·rub·ba·‘al ham·šōl bā·ḵem ’im- ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš mə·šōl bā·ḵem ū·zə·ḵar·tem kî- ʾå̄·nī ū·ḇə·śar·ḵem ʿaṣ·mē·ḵɛmWLC · 2

And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”

אִמּ֜וֹ אֲחֵֽי־ וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ כָּל־ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֖ים עָלָ֗יו בְּאָזְנֵי֙ כָּל־ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת לִבָּם֙ וַיֵּ֤ט אַחֲרֵ֣י אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י אָמְר֖וּ הֽוּא׃ אָחִ֥ינוּ ’im·mōw ’ă·ḥê- way·ḏab·bə·rū kāl- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ‘ā·lāw bə·’ā·zə·nê kāl- ba·‘ă·lê šə·ḵem ’êṯ lib·bām way·yêṭ ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ kî ’ā·mə·rū hū ’ā·ḥî·nūWLC · 3

So they gave him seventy [shekels] of silver from the temple vvv of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired some worthless and reckless men to follow him.

He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy… brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he hid himself.

וַיָּבֹ֤א אָבִיו֙ בֵית־ עָפְרָ֔תָה עַל־ אֶחָ֑ת אֶ֣בֶן וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֞ג אֶת־ שִׁבְּעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ אֶחָ֧יו בְּנֵֽי־ יְרֻבַּ֛עַל יוֹתָ֧ם הַקָּטֹ֖ן בֶּן־ יְרֻבַּ֛עַל וַיִּוָּתֵ֞ר כִּ֥י נֶחְבָּֽא׃ס way·yā·ḇō ’ā·ḇîw ḇêṯ- ‘ā·p̄ə·rā·ṯāh ‘al- ’e·ḥāṯ ’e·ḇen way·ya·hă·rōḡ ’eṯ- šib·bə·ʿīm ’îš ’e·ḥāw bə·nê- yə·rub·ba·‘al yō·w·ṯām haq·qā·ṭōn ben- yə·rub·ba·‘al way·yiw·wā·ṯêr kî neḥ·bāWLC · 5

Then all the leaders of Shechem and… Beth-millo gathered beside the oak at the pillar in Shechem and proceeded to make Abimelech [their] king.

Jotham’s Parable

When this was reported to Jotham, he climbed… to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and cried out…: “Listen to me, O leaders of Shechem, and may God listen to you.

וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ לְיוֹתָ֗ם וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הַר־ גְּרִזִ֔ים וַיִּשָּׂ֥א קוֹל֖וֹ וַיִּקְרָ֑א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְע֤וּ אֵלַי֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֱלֹהִֽים׃ וְיִשְׁמַ֥ע אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם way·yag·gi·ḏū lə·yō·w·ṯām way·yê·leḵ way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ bə·rōš har- gə·ri·zîm way·yiś·śā qō·w·lōw way·yiq·rā way·yō·mer lā·hem šim·‘ū ’ê·lay ba·‘ă·lê šə·ḵem ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·yiš·ma‘ ’ă·lê·ḵemWLC · 7

One day the trees set out… to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅

הָעֵצִ֔ים הָל֤וֹךְ הָֽלְכוּ֙ לִמְשֹׁ֥חַ מֶ֑לֶךְ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ לַזַּ֖יִת מְלוֹכָה עָלֵֽינוּ׃ hā·‘ê·ṣîm hā·lō·wḵ hā·lə·ḵū lim·šō·aḥ me·leḵ ‘ă·lê·hem way·yō·mə·rū laz·za·yiṯ mə·lō·ḵå̄h ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 8

But the olive tree replied ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

הַזַּ֔יִת וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הֶחֳדַ֙לְתִּי֙ אֶת־ דִּשְׁנִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־ בִּ֛י יְכַבְּד֥וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־ הָעֵצִֽים׃ haz·za·yiṯ way·yō·mer lā·hem he·ḥo·ḏal·tî ’eṯ- diš·nî ’ă·šer- bî yə·ḵab·bə·ḏū ’ĕ·lō·hîm wa·’ă·nā·šîm wə·hā·laḵ·tî lā·nū·a‘ ‘al- hā·‘ê·ṣîmWLC · 9

Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come… and reign over us.’

הָעֵצִ֖ים וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ לַתְּאֵנָ֑ה לְכִי־ אַ֖תְּ מָלְכִ֥י עָלֵֽינוּ׃ hā·‘ê·ṣîm way·yō·mə·rū lat·tə·’ê·nāh lə·ḵî- ’at mā·lə·ḵî ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 10

But the fig tree replied ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold sway over the trees?’

הַתְּאֵנָ֔ה וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הֶחֳדַ֙לְתִּי֙ אֶת־ מָתְקִ֔י וְאֶת־ הַטּוֹבָ֑ה תְּנוּבָתִ֖י וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־ הָעֵצִֽים׃ hat·tə·’ê·nāh wat·tō·mer lā·hem he·ḥo·ḏal·tî ’eṯ- mā·ṯə·qî wə·’eṯ- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh tə·nū·ḇā·ṯî wə·hā·laḵ·tî lā·nū·a‘ ‘al- hā·‘ê·ṣîmWLC · 11

Then the trees said to the grapevine, ‘Come… and reign over us.’

הָעֵצִ֖ים וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ לַגָּ֑פֶן לְכִי־ אַ֖תְּ מָלוֹכִי עָלֵֽינוּ׃ hā·‘ê·ṣîm way·yō·mə·rū lag·gā·p̄en lə·ḵî- ’at må̄·lō·ḵī ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 12

But the grapevine replied ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers [both] God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

הַגֶּ֔פֶן וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הֶחֳדַ֙לְתִּי֙ אֶת־ תִּ֣ירוֹשִׁ֔י הַֽמְשַׂמֵּ֥חַ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־ הָעֵצִֽים׃ hag·ge·p̄en wat·tō·mer lā·hem he·ḥo·ḏal·tî ’eṯ- tî·rō·wō·šî ham·śam·mê·aḥ ’ĕ·lō·hîm wa·’ă·nā·šîm wə·hā·laḵ·tî lā·nū·a‘ ‘al- hā·‘ê·ṣîmWLC · 13

Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come… and reign over us.’

כָל־ הָעֵצִ֖ים וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־ הָאָטָ֑ד לֵ֥ךְ אַתָּ֖ה מְלָךְ־ עָלֵֽינוּ׃ ḵāl hā·‘ê·ṣîm way·yō·mə·rū ’el- hā·’ā·ṭāḏ lêḵ ’at·tāh mə·lāḵ- ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 14

But the thornbush replied -, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

הָאָטָד֮ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ הָעֵצִים֒ אִ֡ם אַתֶּם֩ בֶּאֱמֶ֣ת מֹשְׁחִ֨ים אֹתִ֤י לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם בֹּ֖אוּ חֲס֣וּ בְצִלִּ֑י וְאִם־ אַ֕יִן אֵשׁ֙ תֵּ֤צֵא מִן־ הָ֣אָטָ֔ד וְתֹאכַ֖ל אֶת־ אַרְזֵ֥י הַלְּבָנֽוֹן׃ hā·’ā·ṭāḏ way·yō·mer ’el- hā·‘ê·ṣîm ’im ’at·tem be·’ĕ·meṯ mō·šə·ḥîm ’ō·ṯî lə·me·leḵ ‘ă·lê·ḵem bō·’ū ḥă·sū ḇə·ṣil·lî wə·’im- ’a·yin ’êš tê·ṣê min- hā·’ā·ṭāḏ wə·ṯō·ḵal ’eṯ- ’ar·zê hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wnWLC · 15

Now if you have acted faithfully and honestly in making Abimelech king, if… you have done well by Jerubbaal… and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—

but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy… sons on a single stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the leaders of Shechem because he is your brother—

if you have acted faithfully and honestly toward Jerubbaal… and his house this day, [then] may you rejoice in Abimelech, and he in you -.

But if not, may fire come from Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and… Beth-millo, and may fire come from the leaders of Shechem vvv and Beth-millo and consume Abimelech.”

Then Jotham ran away, escaping… to Beer, and he lived there for fear of his brother Abimelech.

Gaal Conspires with the Shechemites

After Abimelech had reigned over Israel for three years,

God sent a spirit of animosity between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem and caused them… to treat Abimelech deceitfully,

in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be avenged on their brother Abimelech - and on the leaders of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.

The leaders of Shechem set up an ambush against [Abimelech] on the hilltops…, and they robbed all who passed by them on the road. So this was reported to Abimelech.

Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came with his brothers and crossed into Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem put their confidence in him.

And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered [grapes] from their vineyards, and trodden [them], they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they ate and drank, they cursed Abimelech.

Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?

If only… this people were under my authority, I would remove Abimelech; I would say to [him], ‘Muster your army and come out!’”

When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.

זְבֻל֙ שַׂר־ הָעִ֔יר אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע דִּבְרֵ֖י גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־ עָ֑בֶד וַיִּ֖חַר אַפּֽוֹ׃ zə·ḇul śar- hā·‘îr ’eṯ- way·yiš·ma‘ diḇ·rê ga·‘al ben- ‘ā·ḇeḏ way·yi·ḥar ’ap·pōwWLC · 30

So he covertly sent… messengers to Abimelech to say, “Look, Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem… and are stirring up the city against you.

Now then, tonight you and the people with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.

And in the morning at sunrise…, get up and advance against the city… When [Gaal] and his men - come out against you, do to them whatever you are able…”

So Abimelech and all his troops - set out by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.

אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְכָל־ הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־ עִמּ֖וֹ וַיָּ֧קָם לָ֑יְלָה וַיֶּאֶרְב֣וּ עַל־ שְׁכֶ֔ם אַרְבָּעָ֖ה רָאשִֽׁים׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- ‘im·mōw way·yā·qām lā·yə·lāh way·ye·’er·ḇū ‘al- šə·ḵem ’ar·bā·‘āh rā·šîmWLC · 34

Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelech and his men - came out from their hiding places.

𐤂𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤁

גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־ עֶ֔בֶד וַיֵּצֵא֙ וַיַּעֲמֹ֕ד פֶּ֖תַח הָעִ֑יר שַׁ֣עַר אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְהָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־ אִתּ֖וֹ וַיָּ֧קָם מִן־ הַמַּאְרָֽב׃ ga·‘al ben- ‘e·ḇeḏ way·yê·ṣê way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ pe·ṯaḥ hā·‘îr ša·‘ar ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ wə·hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- ’it·tōw way·yā·qām min- ham·ma’·rāḇWLC · 35

When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains…!” But Zebul replied…, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”

גַּעַל֮ אֶת־ וַיַּרְא־ הָעָם֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ זְבֻ֔ל הִנֵּה־ עָ֣ם יוֹרֵ֔ד מֵרָאשֵׁ֖י הֶהָרִ֑ים זְבֻ֔ל אֵ֣ת וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ צֵ֧ל הֶהָרִ֛ים רֹאֶ֖ה כָּאֲנָשִֽׁים׃ס אַתָּ֥ה ga·‘al ’eṯ- way·yar- hā·‘ām way·yō·mer ’el- zə·ḇul hin·nêh- ‘ām yō·w·rêḏ mê·rā·šê he·hā·rîm zə·ḇul ’êṯ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ṣêl he·hā·rîm rō·’eh kā·’ă·nā·šîm ’at·tāhWLC · 36

Then Gaal spoke up… again…, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak.

גַּעַל֮ לְדַבֵּר֒ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר וַיֹּ֨סֶף ע֣וֹד הִנֵּה־ עָם֙ יֽוֹרְדִ֔ים מֵעִ֖ם טַבּ֣וּר הָאָ֑רֶץ אֶחָ֣ד וְרֹאשׁ־ בָּ֔א מִדֶּ֖רֶךְ מְעוֹנְנִֽים׃ אֵל֥וֹן ga·‘al lə·ḏab·bêr way·yō·mer way·yō·sep̄ ‘ō·wḏ hin·nêh- ‘ām yō·wr·ḏîm mê·‘im ṭab·būr hā·’ā·reṣ ’e·ḥāḏ wə·rōš- bā mid·de·reḵ mə·‘ō·wn·nîm ’ê·lō·wnWLC · 37

“Where is your gloating now?” Zebul replied… “You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not… the people you ridiculed Go out now… and fight them!”

אַיֵּ֨ה פִ֙יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֵפ֥וֹא זְבֻ֗ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו תֹּאמַ֔ר מִ֥י אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ כִּ֣י נַעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ הֲלֹ֨א זֶ֤ה הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָאַ֣סְתָּה בּ֔וֹ צֵא־ עַתָּ֖ה נָ֥א וְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּֽוֹ׃ס ’ay·yêh p̄î·ḵā ’ă·šer ’ê·p̄ō·w zə·ḇul way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw tō·mar mî ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ kî na·‘aḇ·ḏen·nū hă·lō zeh hā·‘ām ’ă·šer mā·’as·tāh bōw ṣê- ‘at·tāh nā wə·hil·lā·ḥem bōwWLC · 38

So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought against Abimelech,

𐤂𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊

גַ֔עַל וַיֵּ֣צֵא לִפְנֵ֖י בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בַּאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ ḡa·‘al way·yê·ṣê lip̄·nê ba·‘ă·lê šə·ḵem way·yil·lā·ḥem ba·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵWLC · 39

but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many [Shechemites] fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓

אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֣הוּ וַיָּ֖נָס מִפָּנָ֑יו רַבִּ֖ים וַֽיִּפְּל֛וּ חֲלָלִ֥ים עַד־ פֶּ֥תַח הַשָּֽׁעַר׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yir·də·p̄ê·hū way·yā·nās mip·pā·nāw rab·bîm way·yip·pə·lū ḥă·lā·lîm ‘aḏ- pe·ṯaḥ haš·šā·‘arWLC · 40

Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem.

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤓𐤔 𐤂𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤊𐤌

אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בָּארוּמָ֑ה זְבֻ֛ל אֶת־ וַיְגָ֧רֶשׁ גַּ֥עַל וְאֶת־ אֶחָ֖יו מִשֶּׁ֥בֶת בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yê·šeḇ bā·rū·māh zə·ḇul ’eṯ- way·ḡā·reš ga·‘al wə·’eṯ- ’e·ḥāw miš·še·ḇeṯ biš·ḵemWLC · 41

  • The next day the people [of Shechem] went out into the fields, and this was reported to Abimelech.

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת הָעָ֖ם וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ לַאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ way·hî mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ hā·‘ām way·yê·ṣê haś·śā·ḏeh way·yag·gi·ḏū la·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵWLC · 42

So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw… the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־ הָעָ֗ם וַֽיֶּחֱצֵם֙ לִשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֔ים וַיֶּאֱרֹ֖ב בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה הָעָם֙ יֹצֵ֣א מִן־ הָעִ֔יר וַיָּ֥קָם עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיַּכֵּֽם׃ way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām way·ye·ḥĕ·ṣêm liš·lō·šāh rā·šîm way·ye·’ĕ·rōḇ baś·śā·ḏeh way·yar wə·hin·nêh hā·‘ām yō·ṣê min- hā·‘îr way·yā·qām ‘ă·lê·hem way·yak·kêmWLC · 43

Then Abimelech and the companies with him rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies rushed against all who [were] in the fields and struck them down.

וַאֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וְהָרָאשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ פָּשְׁט֕וּ וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ פֶּ֖תַח הָעִ֑יר שַׁ֣עַר וּשְׁנֵ֣י הָֽרָאשִׁ֗ים פָּֽשְׁט֛וּ עַֽל־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה וַיַּכּֽוּם׃ wa·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ wə·hā·rā·šîm ’ă·šer ‘im·mōw pā·šə·ṭū way·ya·‘am·ḏū pe·ṯaḥ hā·‘îr ša·‘ar ū·šə·nê hā·rā·šîm pā·šə·ṭū ‘al- kāl- ’ă·šer baś·śā·ḏeh way·yak·kūmWLC · 44

And all that day Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it - and killed its people -. Then he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.

כֹּ֚ל הַה֔וּא הַיּ֣וֹם וַאֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ נִלְחָ֣ם בָּעִ֗יר וַיִּלְכֹּד֙ אֶת־ הָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־ הָרָ֑ג הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֖הּ וַיִּתֹּץ֙ אֶת־ הָעִ֔יר וַיִּזְרָעֶ֖הָ מֶֽלַח׃פ kōl ha·hū hay·yō·wm wa·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ nil·ḥām bā·‘îr way·yil·kōḏ ’eṯ- hā·‘îr wə·’eṯ- hā·rāḡ hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- bāh way·yit·tōṣ ’eṯ- hā·‘îr way·yiz·rā·‘e·hā me·laḥWLC · 45

On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem entered… the inner chamber of the temple vvv of El-berith.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ כָּֽל־ בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־ שְׁכֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־ צְרִ֔יחַ בֵּ֖ית אֵ֥ל בְּרִֽית׃ way·yiš·mə·‘ū kāl- ba·‘ă·lê miḡ·dal- šə·ḵem way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- ṣə·rî·aḥ bêṯ ’êl bə·rîṯWLC · 46

And when Abimelech was told that all the leaders in the tower of Shechem were gathered there,

לַאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֻּגַּ֖ד כִּ֣י כָּֽל־ בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־ שְׁכֶֽם׃ הִֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ la·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yug·gaḏ kî kāl- ba·‘ă·lê miḡ·dal- šə·ḵem hiṯ·qab·bə·ṣūWLC · 47

he and all his men - went up to Mount Zalmon… Abimelech took his axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men -, “Hurry and do what you have seen me do…”

So each man also cut his own branch and followed… Abimelech. Then they piled [the branches] against the inner chamber and set [it] on fire above them, killing… everyone… in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.

Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it, and captured it.

אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֶל־ תֵּבֵ֑ץ וַיִּ֥חַן בְּתֵבֵ֖ץ וַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yê·leḵ ’el- tê·ḇêṣ way·yi·ḥan bə·ṯê·ḇêṣ way·yil·kə·ḏāhWLC · 50

But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women,… and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in… and went up to the roof of the tower.

When Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached… its entrance to set it on fire…

But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, crushing his skull.

אַחַ֛ת אִשָּׁ֥ה וַתַּשְׁלֵ֞ךְ פֶּ֥לַח רֶ֖כֶב עַל־ אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ רֹ֣אשׁ וַתָּ֖רִץ אֶת־ גֻּלְגָּלְתּֽוֹ׃ ’a·ḥaṯ ’iš·šāh wat·taš·lêḵ pe·laḥ re·ḵeḇ ‘al- ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ rōš wat·tā·riṣ ’eṯ- gul·gā·lə·tōwWLC · 53

He quickly… called his armor-bearer…, saying “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So Abimelech’s armor-bearer ran [his sword] through him,… and he died.

מְהֵרָ֜ה אֶל־ הַנַּ֣עַר׀ וַיִּקְרָ֨א נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ שְׁלֹ֤ף חַרְבְּךָ֙ וּמ֣וֹתְתֵ֔נִי פֶּן־ יֹ֥אמְרוּ לִ֖י אִשָּׁ֣ה הֲרָגָ֑תְהוּ וַיִּדְקְרֵ֥הוּ נַעֲר֖וֹ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ mə·hê·rāh ’el- han·na·‘ar way·yiq·rā nō·śê ḵê·lāw way·yō·mer lōw šə·lōp̄ ḥar·bə·ḵā ū·mō·wṯ·ṯê·nî pen- yō·mə·rū lî ’iš·šāh hă·rā·ḡā·ṯə·hū way·yiḏ·qə·rê·hū na·‘ă·rōw way·yā·mōṯWLC · 54

And when the Israelites… saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.

אִֽישׁ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּרְא֥וּ כִּ֣י אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ מֵ֣ת אִ֥ישׁ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ ’îš- yiś·rā·’êl way·yir·’ū kî ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ mêṯ ’îš way·yê·lə·ḵū lim·qō·mōwWLC · 55

In this way God repaid the wickedness that Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.

אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֖ת וַיָּ֣שֶׁב רָעַ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עָשָׂה֙ לְאָבִ֔יו לַהֲרֹ֖ג אֶת־ שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶחָֽיו׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êṯ way·yā·šeḇ rā·‘aṯ ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ‘ā·śāh lə·’ā·ḇîw la·hă·rōḡ ’eṯ- šiḇ·‘îm ’e·ḥāwWLC · 56

And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of Shechem {back} upon their own heads. So the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
