Elkanah and His Wives
1
Now there was a man named Elkanah [who was] from vvv Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. [He was] the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

He had two wives, one named Hannah… and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none…
𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤌
וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים אַחַת֙ שֵׁ֤ם חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה לִפְנִנָּה֙ וַיְהִ֤י יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃ wə·lōw šə·tê nā·šîm ’a·ḥaṯ šêm ḥan·nāh wə·šêm haš·šê·nîṯ pə·nin·nāh lip̄·nin·nāh way·hî yə·lā·ḏîm ū·lə·ḥan·nāh ’ên yə·lā·ḏîm — WLC · 2

Year after year… [Elkanah]… would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.

מִיָּמִ֣ים׀ יָמִ֔ימָה הַה֤וּא הָאִ֨ישׁ וְעָלָה֩ מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֧ת וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְשָׁ֞ם עֵלִ֗י שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃ mî·yā·mîm yā·mî·māh ha·hū hā·’îš wə·‘ā·lāh mê·‘î·rōw lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ wə·liz·bō·aḥ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ bə·ši·lōh wə·šām ‘ê·lî šə·nê ḇə·nê- ḥā·p̄ə·nî ū·p̄in·ḥās kō·hă·nîm Yah·weh — WLC · 3

And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

הַיּ֔וֹם וַיְהִ֣י אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח וְנָתַ֞ן מָנֽוֹת׃ אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ לִפְנִנָּ֣ה וּֽלְכָל־ בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ hay·yō·wm way·hî ’el·qā·nāh way·yiz·baḥ wə·nā·ṯan mā·nō·wṯ ’iš·tōw lip̄·nin·nāh ū·lə·ḵāl- bā·ne·hā ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯe·hā — WLC · 4

But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her womb.

וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם מָנָ֥ה כִּ֤י אֶת־ אָהֵ֔ב חַנָּה֙ וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃ ū·lə·ḥan·nāh yit·tên ’a·ḥaṯ ’ap·pā·yim mā·nāh kî ’eṯ- ’ā·hêḇ ḥan·nāh Yah·weh sā·ḡar raḥ·māh — WLC · 5

Because the LORD had closed vvv [Hannah’s] womb, her rival… would provoke her viciously to taunt her.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤑𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤂𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤎 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤎𐤕𐤄
כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃ צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־ בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כַּ֔עַס וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה kî- Yah·weh sā·ḡar bə·‘aḏ raḥ·māh ṣā·rā·ṯāh gam- ba·‘ă·ḇūr har·rə·‘i·māh ka·‘as wə·ḵi·‘ă·sat·tāh — WLC · 6

And this went on… year after year. Whenever [Hannah] went up to the house of the LORD -, [her rival] taunted her until she wept and would not eat.

וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃ wə·ḵên ya·‘ă·śeh šā·nāh ḇə·šā·nāh mid·dê ‘ă·lō·ṯāh bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh kên taḵ·‘i·sen·nāh wat·tiḇ·keh wə·lō ṯō·ḵal — WLC · 7

“Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

Hannah Prays for a Son

So after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up… Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤄 𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤆𐤅𐤆𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְלָ֥ה שָׁתֹ֑ה בְשִׁלֹ֖ה חַנָּ֔ה וַתָּ֣קָם וְאַחֲרֵ֣י וְעֵלִ֣י הַכֹּהֵ֗ן יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־ הַכִּסֵּ֔א עַל־ מְזוּזַ֖ת הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ ’a·ḥă·rê ’ā·ḵə·lāh šā·ṯōh ḇə·ši·lōh ḥan·nāh wat·tā·qām wə·’a·ḥă·rê wə·‘ê·lî hak·kō·hên yō·šêḇ ‘al- hak·kis·sê ‘al- mə·zū·zaṯ hê·ḵal Yah·weh — WLC · 9

- In her bitter distress…, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears…
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤊𐤄
וְהִ֖יא מָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁ וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל עַל־ יְהוָ֖ה וּבָכֹ֥ה תִבְכֶּֽה׃ wə·hî mā·raṯ nā·p̄eš wat·tiṯ·pal·lêl ‘al- Yah·weh ū·ḇā·ḵōh ṯiḇ·keh — WLC · 10

And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD of Hosts, if only You will look… upon the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, not forgetting [Your maidservant] but giving… [her] a son…, then I will dedicate him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch… his head.”

וַתִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר וַתֹּאמַ֗ר יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אִם־ רָאֹ֥ה תִרְאֶ֣ה׀ בָּעֳנִ֣י אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙ וְלֹֽא־ תִשְׁכַּ֣ח אֶת־ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ זֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּנְתַתִּ֤יו לַֽיהוָה֙ כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו לֹא־ וּמוֹרָ֖ה יַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־ רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ wat·tid·dōr ne·ḏer wat·tō·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’im- rā·’ōh ṯir·’eh bā·‘o·nî ’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā ū·zə·ḵar·ta·nî wə·lō- ṯiš·kaḥ ’eṯ- wə·nā·ṯat·tāh la·’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā ’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā ze·ra‘ ’ă·nā·šîm ū·nə·ṯat·tîw Yah·weh kāl- yə·mê ḥay·yāw lō- ū·mō·w·rāh ya·‘ă·leh ‘al- rō·šōw — WLC · 11

- As [Hannah] kept on praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth.

וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י הִרְבְּתָ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר אֶת־ פִּֽיהָ׃ wə·hā·yāh kî hir·bə·ṯāh lə·hiṯ·pal·lêl lip̄·nê Yah·weh wə·‘ê·lî šō·mêr ’eṯ- pî·hā — WLC · 12

Hannah… was praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was drunk

וְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יא מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת עַל־ לִבָּ֔הּ רַ֚ק שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ נָּע֔וֹת וְקוֹלָ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ עֵלִ֖י וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃ wə·ḥan·nāh hî mə·ḏab·be·reṯ ‘al- lib·bāh raq śə·p̄ā·ṯe·hā nā·‘ō·wṯ wə·qō·w·lāh lō yiš·šā·mê·a‘ ‘ê·lî way·yaḥ·šə·ḇe·hā lə·šik·kō·rāh — WLC · 13

and said to her…, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine…!”

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י עַד־ מָתַ֖י תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין הָסִ֥ירִי אֶת־ יֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·le·hā ‘ê·lî ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay tiš·tak·kā·rîn hā·sî·rî ’eṯ- yê·nêḵ mê·‘ā·lā·yiḵ — WLC · 14

“No, my lord,” Hannah… replied. “I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.

לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֔י חַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ וַתַּ֨עַן אָנֹ֔כִי אִשָּׁ֤ה קְשַׁת־ ר֙וּחַ֙ לֹ֣א שָׁתִ֑יתִי וְיַ֥יִן וְשֵׁכָ֖ר וָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ אֶת־ נַפְשִׁ֖י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ lō ’ă·ḏō·nî ḥan·nāh wat·tō·mer wat·ta·‘an ’ā·nō·ḵî ’iš·šāh qə·šaṯ- rū·aḥ lō šā·ṯî·ṯî wə·ya·yin wə·šê·ḵār wā·’eš·pōḵ ’eṯ- nap̄·šî lip̄·nê Yah·weh — WLC · 15

Do not take - your servant for a wicked… woman, for all this time… I have been praying out of the depth of my anguish and grief.”

אַל־ תִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־ לִפְנֵ֖י אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ בְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־ בַּת־ עַד־ הֵֽנָּה׃ דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי מֵרֹ֥ב שִׂיחִ֛י וְכַעְסִ֖י ’al- tit·tên ’eṯ- lip̄·nê ’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā bə·lî·yā·‘al kî- baṯ- ‘aḏ- hên·nāh dib·bar·tî mê·rōḇ śî·ḥî wə·ḵa‘·sî — WLC · 16

“Go in peace,” Eli… replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”

לְכִ֣י לְשָׁל֑וֹם עֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר וַיַּ֧עַן וֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־ שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ lə·ḵî lə·šā·lō·wm ‘ê·lî way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an wê·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl yit·tên ’eṯ- šê·lā·ṯêḵ ’ă·šer šā·’alt mê·‘im·mōw — WLC · 17

“May your maidservant find favor with you,” said Hannah. Then [she] went on her way, and she began to eat, and her face {was} no longer downcast

The next morning they got up early to bow in worship before the LORD, and then they returned… home to Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.

So in the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, [saying,] “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”

Then Elkanah and all his house went up… to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and [to fulfill] his vow, -

but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear… before the LORD and to stay there permanently…”

“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied “and stay here until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD confirm His word.” So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

Once she had weaned him, [Hannah] took [the boy] with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah… of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.

And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli.

“Please, my lord,” said [Hannah], “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.

I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me - what I asked of Him,

I now dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as… long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
