Chapter 13

War with the Philistines

Saul was [thirty] years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel [forty-]two years.

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌

שָׁא֣וּל בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֖ה בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וּשְׁתֵּ֣י שָׁנִ֔ים šā·’ūl ben- šā·nāh bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl ū·šə·tê šā·nîmWLC · 1

[He] chose for himself three thousand [men] of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at Michmash and in the hill country vvv of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And the rest of the troops he sent away, each to his own [home].

Then Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard [about it]. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”

𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤏 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤕𐤒𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅

יוֹנָתָ֗ן אֵ֣ת וַיַּ֣ךְ פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ נְצִ֤יב אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּגֶ֔בַע פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ וְשָׁאוּל֩ תָּקַ֨ע בַּשּׁוֹפָ֤ר בְּכָל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הָעִבְרִֽים׃ יִשְׁמְע֖וּ yō·w·nā·ṯān ’êṯ way·yaḵ pə·liš·tîm nə·ṣîḇ ’ă·šer bə·ḡe·ḇa‘ pə·liš·tîm way·yiš·mə·‘ū wə·šā·’ūl tā·qa‘ baš·šō·w·p̄ār bə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ lê·mōr hā·‘iḇ·rîm yiš·mə·‘ūWLC · 3

And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines!” Then the people… were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore… They went up and camped at Michmash, east vvv of Beth-aven.

Seeing that they were in danger because their troops were hard-pressed, the men of Israel hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.

𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤑𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤂𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤎𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕

רָאוּ֙ כִּ֣י ל֔וֹ צַר־ כִּ֥י הָעָ֑ם נִגַּ֖שׂ וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל הָעָ֗ם וַיִּֽתְחַבְּא֣וּ בַּמְּעָר֤וֹת וּבַֽחֲוָחִים֙ וּבַסְּלָעִ֔ים וּבַצְּרִחִ֖ים וּבַבֹּרֽוֹת׃ rā·’ū kî lōw ṣar- kî hā·‘ām nig·gaś wə·’îš yiś·rā·’êl hā·‘ām way·yiṯ·ḥab·bə·’ū bam·mə·‘ā·rō·wṯ ū·ḇa·ḥă·wā·ḥîm ū·ḇas·sə·lā·‘îm ū·ḇaṣ·ṣə·ri·ḥîm ū·ḇab·bō·rō·wṯWLC · 6

Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul, however, remained at Gilgal, and all his troops were quaking in fear…

𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

And [Saul] waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the troops began to desert [Saul].

𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤑 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

וַיִּיחֶל שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֗ים לַמּוֹעֵד֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וְלֹא־ בָ֥א הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל הָעָ֖ם וַיָּ֥פֶץ מֵעָלָֽיו׃ way·yī·ḥɛl šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm lam·mō·w·‘êḏ ’ă·šer šə·mū·’êl šə·mū·’êl wə·lō- ḇā hag·gil·gāl hā·‘ām way·yā·p̄eṣ mê·‘ā·lāwWLC · 8

So [he] said, “Bring me… the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered up the burnt offering.

  • Just as he finished offering the burnt offering,… Samuel arrived, and Saul went out vvv to greet him.

וַיְהִ֗י כְּכַלֹּתוֹ֙ לְהַעֲל֣וֹת הָעֹלָ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֥ה שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל בָּ֑א שָׁא֛וּל וַיֵּצֵ֥א לִקְרָאת֖וֹ לְבָרֲכֽוֹ׃ way·hî kə·ḵal·lō·ṯōw lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ hā·‘ō·lāh wə·hin·nêh šə·mū·’êl bā šā·’ūl way·yê·ṣê liq·rā·ṯōw lə·ḇā·ră·ḵōwWLC · 10

“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash,

מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר שָׁא֡וּל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כִּֽי־ רָאִיתִי֩ כִֽי־ הָעָ֜ם נָפַ֨ץ מֵעָלַ֗י וְאַתָּה֙ לֹא־ בָ֙אתָ֙ לְמוֹעֵ֣ד הַיָּמִ֔ים וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים נֶאֱסָפִ֥ים מִכְמָֽשׂ׃ meh ‘ā·śî·ṯā šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer šā·’ūl way·yō·mer kî- rā·’î·ṯî ḵî- hā·‘ām nā·p̄aṣ mê·‘ā·lay wə·’at·tāh lō- ḇā·ṯā lə·mō·w·‘êḏ hay·yā·mîm ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm ne·’ĕ·sā·p̄îm miḵ·māśWLC · 11

I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

וָאֹמַ֗ר עַ֠תָּה פְלִשְׁתִּ֤ים יֵרְד֨וּ אֵלַי֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל לֹ֣א חִלִּ֑יתִי וּפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה וָֽאֶתְאַפַּ֔ק וָאַעֲלֶ֖ה הָעֹלָֽה׃ס wā·’ō·mar ‘at·tāh p̄ə·liš·tîm yê·rə·ḏū ’ê·lay hag·gil·gāl lō ḥil·lî·ṯî ū·p̄ə·nê Yah·weh wā·’eṯ·’ap·paq wā·’a·‘ă·leh hā·‘ō·lāhWLC · 12

“You have acted foolishly,” Samuel declared -. “You have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

𐤍𐤎𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤅𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

נִסְכָּ֑לְתָּ שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֶל־ שָׁא֖וּל לֹ֣א שָׁמַ֗רְתָּ אֶת־ מִצְוַ֞ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ צִוָּ֔ךְ כִּ֣י עַתָּ֗ה יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־ הֵכִ֨ין מַֽמְלַכְתְּךָ֛ אֶל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ nis·kā·lə·tā šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer ’el- šā·’ūl lō šā·mar·tā ’eṯ- miṣ·waṯ ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ṣiw·wāḵ kî ‘at·tāh Yah·weh ’eṯ- hê·ḵîn mam·laḵ·tə·ḵā ’el- yiś·rā·’êl ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 13

But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him… ruler over His people, because you have not kept - the command of the LORD.”

וְעַתָּ֖ה מַמְלַכְתְּךָ֣ לֹא־ תָק֑וּם יְהוָ֨ה בִּקֵּשׁ֩ ל֜וֹ אִ֣ישׁ כִּלְבָב֗וֹ וַיְצַוֵּ֨הוּ יְהוָ֤ה לְנָגִיד֙ עַל־ עַמּ֔וֹ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶֽׁר־ צִוְּךָ֖ יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·‘at·tāh mam·laḵ·tə·ḵā lō- ṯā·qūm Yah·weh biq·qêš lōw ’îš kil·ḇā·ḇōw way·ṣaw·wê·hū Yah·weh lə·nā·ḡîḏ ‘al- ‘am·mōw kî lō šā·mar·tā ’êṯ ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wə·ḵā Yah·wehWLC · 14

Then Samuel set out from Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin. And Saul numbered the troops… who were with him, about six hundred men.

Now Saul and Jonathan his son and the troops… with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Michmash.

𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤊𐤌𐤔

וְשָׁא֞וּל וְיוֹנָתָ֣ן בְּנ֗וֹ וְהָעָם֙ הַנִּמְצָ֣א עִמָּ֔ם יֹשְׁבִ֖ים בְּגֶ֣בַע בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים חָנ֥וּ בְמִכְמָֽשׂ׃ wə·šā·’ūl wə·yō·w·nā·ṯān bə·nōw wə·hā·‘ām han·nim·ṣā ‘im·mām yō·šə·ḇîm bə·ḡe·ḇa‘ bin·yā·min ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm ḥā·nū ḇə·miḵ·māśWLC · 16

And raiders went out of the Philistine camp in three divisions. One headed toward Ophrah - in the land of Shual,

𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤉𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤋

הַמַּשְׁחִ֛ית וַיֵּצֵ֧א פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים מִמַּחֲנֵ֥ה שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֑ים אֶחָ֥ד הָרֹ֨אשׁ יִפְנֶ֛ה אֶל־ עָפְרָ֖ה דֶּ֥רֶךְ אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ שׁוּעָֽל׃ ham·maš·ḥîṯ way·yê·ṣê p̄ə·liš·tîm mim·ma·ḥă·nêh šə·lō·šāh rā·šîm ’e·ḥāḏ hā·rōš yip̄·neh ’el- ‘ā·p̄ə·rāh de·reḵ ’el- ’e·reṣ šū·‘ālWLC · 17

another - toward Beth-horon -, vvv and the [third]… down the border road overlooking… the Valley of Zeboim facing the wilderness.

אֶחָד֙ וְהָרֹ֤אשׁ יִפְנֶ֔ה חֹר֑וֹן דֶּ֖רֶךְ בֵּ֣ית וְהָרֹ֨אשׁ אֶחָ֤ד יִפְנֶה֙ הַגְּב֔וּל דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַנִּשְׁקָ֛ף עַל־ גֵּ֥י הַצְּבֹעִ֖ים הַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ס ’e·ḥāḏ wə·hā·rōš yip̄·neh ḥō·rō·wn de·reḵ bêṯ wə·hā·rōš ’e·ḥāḏ yip̄·neh hag·gə·ḇūl de·reḵ han·niš·qāp̄ ‘al- gê haṣ·ṣə·ḇō·‘îm ham·miḏ·bā·rāhWLC · 18

And no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”

𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤕

לֹ֣א וְחָרָשׁ֙ יִמָּצֵ֔א בְּכֹ֖ל אֶ֣רֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אָמַר הָעִבְרִ֔ים פֶּ֚ן יַעֲשׂ֣וּ חֶ֖רֶב א֥וֹ חֲנִֽית׃ lō wə·ḥā·rāš yim·mā·ṣê bə·ḵōl ’e·reṣ yiś·rā·’êl kî- p̄ə·liš·tîm ʾå̄·mar hā·‘iḇ·rîm pen ya·‘ă·śū ḥe·reḇ ’ōw ḥă·nîṯWLC · 19

Instead, all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen… their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and sickles.

The charge was a pim for [sharpening] a plowshare or mattock, a third [of a shekel] for [sharpening] a pitchfork or an axe, and [a third of a shekel] for repointing an oxgoad.

הַפְּצִ֣ירָה וְֽהָיְתָ֞ה פִ֗ים לַמַּֽחֲרֵשֹׁת֙ וְלָ֣אֵתִ֔ים וְלִשְׁלֹ֥שׁ קִלְּשׁ֖וֹן וּלְהַקַּרְדֻּמִּ֑ים וּלְהַצִּ֖יב הַדָּרְבָֽן׃ hap·pə·ṣî·rāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh p̄îm lam·ma·ḥă·rê·šōṯ wə·lā·’ê·ṯîm wə·liš·lōš qil·lə·šō·wn ū·lə·haq·qar·dum·mîm ū·lə·haṣ·ṣîḇ had·dā·rə·ḇānWLC · 21

So on the day of battle not a sword or spear could be found in the hands vvv of the troops with Saul… and Jonathan;… only Saul and his son Jonathan had weapons.

And a garrison of the Philistines… had gone out to the pass at Michmash.
