Chapter 15

Saul’s Disobedience

1

Then Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people… Israel. Now therefore, listen… to the words of the LORD.

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎

שְׁמוּאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ שָׁא֔וּל יְהוָה֙ שָׁלַ֤ח אֹתִ֨י לִמְשָׁחֳךָ֣ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ עַל־ עַמּ֖וֹ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֣ה שְׁמַ֔ע לְק֖וֹל דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ס šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer ’el- šā·’ūl Yah·weh šā·laḥ ’ō·ṯî lim·šā·ḥo·ḵā lə·me·leḵ ‘al- ‘am·mōw ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl wə·‘at·tāh šə·ma‘ lə·qō·wl diḇ·rê Yah·wehWLC · 1

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the Amalekites did to the Israelites when they opposed them on their way up from Egypt.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ פָּקַ֕דְתִּי אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־ עֲמָלֵ֖ק עָשָׂ֥ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ בַּעֲלֹת֖וֹ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar pā·qaḏ·tî ’êṯ ’ă·šer- ‘ă·mā·lêq ‘ā·śāh lə·yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- śām lōw bad·de·reḵ ba·‘ă·lō·ṯōw mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 2

Now go and attack the Amalekites and devote to destruction all that belongs to them. Do not spare them, but put to death men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

עַתָּה֩ לֵ֨ךְ וְהִכִּֽיתָ֜ה אֶת־ עֲמָלֵ֗ק וְהַֽחֲרַמְתֶּם֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ ל֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א תַחְמֹ֖ל עָלָ֑יו וְהֵמַתָּ֞ה מֵאִ֣ישׁ עַד־ אִשָּׁ֗ה מֵֽעֹלֵל֙ וְעַד־ יוֹנֵ֔ק מִשּׁ֣וֹר וְעַד־ שֶׂ֔ה מִגָּמָ֖ל וְעַד־ חֲמֽוֹר׃ס ‘at·tāh lêḵ wə·hik·kî·ṯāh ’eṯ- ‘ă·mā·lêq wə·ha·ḥă·ram·tem ’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer- lōw wə·lō ṯaḥ·mōl ‘ā·lāw wə·hê·mat·tāh mê·’îš ‘aḏ- ’iš·šāh mê·‘ō·lêl wə·‘aḏ- yō·w·nêq miš·šō·wr wə·‘aḏ- śeh mig·gā·māl wə·‘aḏ- ḥă·mō·wrWLC · 3

So Saul summoned the troops and numbered them at Telaim— 200,000 {}… foot soldiers and 10,000… men of Judah.

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤈𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄

שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת־ וַיְשַׁמַּ֤ע הָעָ֔ם וַֽיִּפְקְדֵם֙ בַּטְּלָאִ֔ים מָאתַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף רַגְלִ֑י וַעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים אֶת־ אִ֥ישׁ יְהוּדָֽה׃ šā·’ūl ’eṯ- way·šam·ma‘ hā·‘ām way·yip̄·qə·ḏêm baṭ·ṭə·lā·’îm mā·ṯa·yim ’e·lep̄ raḡ·lî wa·‘ă·śe·reṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’eṯ- ’îš yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 4

Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley.

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤍𐤇𐤋

שָׁא֖וּל וַיָּבֹ֥א עַד־ עִ֣יר עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיָּ֖רֶב בַּנָּֽחַל׃ šā·’ūl way·yā·ḇō ‘aḏ- ‘îr ‘ă·mā·lêq way·yā·reḇ ban·nā·ḥalWLC · 5

And he warned… the Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites… when they came up out of Egypt, go on vvv and get away from the Amalekites. Otherwise I will sweep you away with them.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.

שָׁא֣וּל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־ הַקֵּינִ֡י וְאַתָּ֞ה עָשִׂ֤יתָה חֶ֙סֶד֙ עִם־ כָּל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בַּעֲלוֹתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם לְכוּ֩ סֻּ֨רוּ רְד֜וּ מִתּ֣וֹךְ עֲמָלֵקִ֗י פֶּן־ אֹֽסִפְךָ֙ עִמּ֔וֹ קֵינִ֖י וַיָּ֥סַר מִתּ֥וֹךְ עֲמָלֵֽק׃ šā·’ūl way·yō·mer ’el- haq·qê·nî wə·’at·tāh ‘ā·śî·ṯāh ḥe·seḏ ‘im- kāl- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ba·‘ă·lō·w·ṯām mim·miṣ·rā·yim lə·ḵū su·rū rə·ḏū mit·tō·wḵ ‘ă·mā·lê·qî pen- ’ō·sip̄·ḵā ‘im·mōw qê·nî way·yā·sar mit·tō·wḵ ‘ă·mā·lêqWLC · 6

Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt.

שָׁא֖וּל אֶת־ וַיַּ֥ךְ עֲמָלֵ֑ק בּוֹאֲךָ֣ מֵֽחֲוִילָה֙ שׁ֔וּר אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י מִצְרָֽיִם׃ šā·’ūl ’eṯ- way·yaḵ ‘ă·mā·lêq bō·w·’ă·ḵā mê·ḥă·wî·lāh šūr ’ă·šer ‘al- pə·nê miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 7

He captured Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted… all the others {to destruction} with the sword.

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤂𐤂 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁

וַיִּתְפֹּ֛שׂ אֶת־ אֲגַ֥ג מֶֽלֶךְ־ עֲמָלֵ֖ק חָ֑י וְאֶת־ הֶחֱרִ֥ים לְפִי־ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם חָֽרֶב׃ way·yiṯ·pōś ’eṯ- ’ă·ḡaḡ me·leḵ- ‘ă·mā·lêq ḥāy wə·’eṯ- he·ḥĕ·rîm lə·p̄î- kāl- hā·‘ām ḥā·reḇWLC · 8

Saul and his troops… spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. vvv They were unwilling to devote them to destruction, but they devoted to destruction all vvv that was despised and worthless -.

שָׁא֨וּל וְהָעָ֜ם עַל־ וַיַּחְמֹל֩ אֲגָ֗ג וְעַל־ מֵיטַ֣ב הַצֹּאן֩ וְהַבָּקָ֨ר וְהַמִּשְׁנִ֤ים וְעַל־ הַכָּרִים֙ וְעַל־ הַטּ֔וֹב כָּל־ וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּ הַחֲרִימָ֑ם הֶחֱרִֽימוּ׃פ וְכָל־ הַמְּלָאכָ֛ה נְמִבְזָ֥ה וְנָמֵ֖ס אֹתָ֥הּ šā·’ūl wə·hā·‘ām ‘al- way·yaḥ·mōl ’ă·ḡāḡ wə·‘al- mê·ṭaḇ haṣ·ṣōn wə·hab·bā·qār wə·ham·miš·nîm wə·‘al- hak·kā·rîm wə·‘al- haṭ·ṭō·wḇ kāl- wə·lō ’ā·ḇū ha·ḥă·rî·mām he·ḥĕ·rî·mū wə·ḵāl ham·mə·lā·ḵāh nə·miḇ·zāh wə·nā·mês ’ō·ṯāhWLC · 9

Samuel Denounces Saul

Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- šə·mū·’êl lê·mōrWLC · 10

“I regret that I have made Saul king -, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and cried out to the LORD all that night.

𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

נִחַ֗מְתִּי כִּֽי־ שָׁאוּל֙ הִמְלַ֤כְתִּי אֶת־ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי־ שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים דְּבָרַ֖י לִשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיִּ֙חַר֙ וַיִּזְעַ֥ק אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה כָּל־ הַלָּֽיְלָה׃ ni·ḥam·tî kî- šā·’ūl him·laḵ·tî ’eṯ- lə·me·leḵ kî- šāḇ mê·’a·ḥă·ray wə·’eṯ- lō hê·qîm də·ḇā·ray liš·mū·’êl way·yi·ḥar way·yiz·‘aq ’el- Yah·weh kāl- hal·lā·yə·lāhWLC · 11

Early in the morning Samuel got up to confront Saul, but [he] was told…,… “Saul has gone to Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned… and gone down to Gilgal.”

בַּבֹּ֑קֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֧ם לִקְרַ֥את שָׁא֖וּל וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִשְׁמוּאֵ֜ל לֵאמֹ֗ר שָׁא֤וּל בָּֽא־ הַכַּרְמֶ֙לָה֙ וְהִנֵּ֨ה מַצִּ֥יב יָ֔ד לוֹ֙ וַיִּסֹּב֙ וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר וַיֵּ֖רֶד הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ bab·bō·qer šə·mū·’êl way·yaš·kêm liq·raṯ šā·’ūl way·yug·gaḏ liš·mū·’êl lê·mōr šā·’ūl bā- hak·kar·me·lāh wə·hin·nêh maṣ·ṣîḇ yāḏ lōw way·yis·sōḇ way·ya·‘ă·ḇōr way·yê·reḏ hag·gil·gālWLC · 12

When Samuel reached… him, Saul said to him, “May the LORD bless you. I have carried out the LORD’s instructions.”

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓

שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־ שָׁא֑וּל שָׁא֗וּל וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ לַֽיהוָ֔ה בָּר֤וּךְ אַתָּה֙ הֲקִימֹ֖תִי אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ דְּבַ֥ר šə·mū·’êl way·yā·ḇō ’el- šā·’ūl šā·’ūl way·yō·mer lōw Yah·weh bā·rūḵ ’at·tāh hă·qî·mō·ṯî ’eṯ- Yah·weh də·ḇarWLC · 13

But Samuel replied, “Then what [is] this bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle that I hear?”

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏

שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר וּמֶ֛ה הַזֶּ֖ה בְּאָזְנָ֑י קֽוֹל־ הַצֹּ֥אן וְק֣וֹל הַבָּקָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י שֹׁמֵֽעַ׃ šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer ū·meh haz·zeh bə·’ā·zə·nāy qō·wl- haṣ·ṣōn wə·qō·wl hab·bā·qār ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî šō·mê·a‘WLC · 14

Saul answered, “The troops… brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤉 𐤇𐤌𐤋 𐤌𐤉𐤈𐤁 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤎

שָׁא֜וּל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָעָם֙ עַל־ הֱבִיא֗וּם אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֵעֲמָלֵקִ֣י חָמַ֤ל מֵיטַ֤ב הַצֹּאן֙ וְהַבָּקָ֔ר לְמַ֥עַן זְבֹ֖חַ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְאֶת־ הַיּוֹתֵ֖ר הֶחֱרַֽמְנוּ׃ס šā·’ūl way·yō·mer hā·‘ām ‘al- hĕ·ḇî·’ūm ’ă·šer mê·‘ă·mā·lê·qî ḥā·mal mê·ṭaḇ haṣ·ṣōn wə·hab·bā·qār lə·ma·‘an zə·ḇō·aḥ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā wə·’eṯ- hay·yō·w·ṯêr he·ḥĕ·ram·nūWLC · 15

“Stop!” exclaimed Samuel -. “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” “Tell me,” Saul replied

And Samuel said, “Although you [were once] small in your own eyes, have you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel

and sent… you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and devote to destruction the sinful Amalekites. Fight against them until you have wiped them out -.’

So why did you not obey… the LORD? Why did you rush upon the plunder and do evil in the sight of the LORD?”

“But I did obey… the LORD,” Saul - replied. “I went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back Agag king of Amalek and devoted the Amalekites {to destruction}.

The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice [them] to the LORD your God at Gilgal.”

But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to [His] voice…? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, [and] attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”

Saul’s Confession

Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; I have transgressed the LORD’s commandment and your instructions, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤌

Now therefore, please forgive my sin and return with me so I can worship the LORD.”

וְעַתָּ֕ה נָ֖א אֶת־ שָׂ֥א חַטָּאתִ֑י וְשׁ֣וּב עִמִּ֔י וְאֶֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה לַֽיהוָֽה׃ wə·‘at·tāh nā ’eṯ- śā ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯî wə·šūḇ ‘im·mî wə·’eš·ta·ḥă·weh Yah·wehWLC · 25

“I will not return with you,” Samuel replied -. “For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and [He] has rejected you as king over Israel.”

As Samuel turned to go, Saul grabbed the hem of his robe, and it tore.

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤐 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤏

שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וַיִּסֹּ֥ב לָלֶ֑כֶת וַיַּחֲזֵ֥ק בִּכְנַף־ מְעִיל֖וֹ וַיִּקָּרַֽע׃ šə·mū·’êl way·yis·sōḇ lā·le·ḵeṯ way·ya·ḥă·zêq biḵ·nap̄- mə·‘î·lōw way·yiq·qā·ra‘WLC · 27

So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor [who is] better than you.

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤌𐤊

שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֜ה אֶֽת־ קָרַ֨ע מַמְלְכ֧וּת יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מֵעָלֶ֖יךָ הַיּ֑וֹם וּנְתָנָ֕הּ לְרֵעֲךָ֖ הַטּ֥וֹב מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw Yah·weh ’eṯ- qā·ra‘ mam·lə·ḵūṯ yiś·rā·’êl mê·‘ā·le·ḵā hay·yō·wm ū·nə·ṯā·nāh lə·rê·‘ă·ḵā haṭ·ṭō·wḇ mim·me·kāWLC · 28

Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for… He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”

וְגַם֙ נֵ֣צַח יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א יְשַׁקֵּ֖ר יִנָּחֵ֑ם כִּ֣י לֹ֥א ה֖וּא וְלֹ֣א אָדָ֛ם לְהִנָּחֵֽם׃ wə·ḡam nê·ṣaḥ yiś·rā·’êl lō yə·šaq·qêr yin·nā·ḥêm kî lō hū wə·lō ’ā·ḏām lə·hin·nā·ḥêmWLC · 29

“I have sinned,” Saul replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”

So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.

שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וַיָּ֥שָׁב אַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁא֑וּל שָׁא֖וּל וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לַֽיהוָֽה׃ס šə·mū·’êl way·yā·šāḇ ’a·ḥă·rê šā·’ūl šā·’ūl way·yiš·ta·ḥū Yah·wehWLC · 31

Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.” Agag came to him cheerfully, for he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַגִּ֤ישׁוּ אֵלַי֙ אֶת־ אֲגַג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֔ק אֲגַ֖ג וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֵלָ֔יו מַעֲדַנֹּ֑ת אֲגָ֔ג וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָכֵ֖ן מַר־ הַמָּֽוֶת׃ס סָ֥ר šə·mū·’êl way·yō·mer hag·gî·šū ’ê·lay ’eṯ- ’ă·ḡaḡ me·leḵ ‘ă·mā·lêq ’ă·ḡaḡ way·yê·leḵ ’ê·lāw ma·‘ă·ḏan·nōṯ ’ă·ḡāḡ way·yō·mer ’ā·ḵên mar- ham·mā·weṯ sārWLC · 32

But Samuel declared: “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.

Then Samuel went to Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.

And to the day of his death,… Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel mourned for Saul, and the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
