Chapter 19
Saul Tries to Kill David
1
Then Saul… ordered his son… Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Jonathan - delighted greatly in David,

שָׁא֗וּל אֶל־ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר בְּנוֹ֙ וְאֶל־ יוֹנָתָ֤ן כָּל־ עֲבָדָ֔יו לְהָמִ֖ית אֶת־ דָּוִ֑ד וִיהֽוֹנָתָן֙ שָׁא֔וּל בֶּן־ חָפֵ֥ץ מְאֹֽד׃ בְּדָוִ֖ד šā·’ūl ’el- way·ḏab·bêr bə·nōw wə·’el- yō·w·nā·ṯān kāl- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw lə·hā·mîṯ ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ wî·hō·w·nā·ṯān šā·’ūl ben- ḥā·p̄êṣ mə·’ōḏ bə·ḏā·wiḏ — WLC · 1

so he warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you… Be on your guard… in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.

יְהוֹנָתָן֙ וַיַּגֵּ֤ד לְדָוִ֣ד לֵאמֹ֔ר אָבִ֖י שָׁא֥וּל מְבַקֵּ֛שׁ לַהֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ וְעַתָּה֙ הִשָּֽׁמֶר־ נָ֣א בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֥ בַסֵּ֖תֶר וְנַחְבֵּֽאתָ׃ yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān way·yag·gêḏ lə·ḏā·wiḏ lê·mōr ’ā·ḇî šā·’ūl mə·ḇaq·qêš la·hă·mî·ṯe·ḵā wə·‘at·tāh hiš·šā·mer- nā ḇab·bō·qer wə·yā·šaḇ·tā ḇas·sê·ṯer wə·naḥ·bê·ṯā — WLC · 2

I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you [are],… so I can ask about you -. And if I find out anything, I will tell you.”

וַאֲנִ֨י אֵצֵ֜א וְעָמַדְתִּ֣י לְיַד־ אָבִ֗י בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתָּ֣ה שָׁ֔ם וַאֲנִ֕י אֲדַבֵּ֥ר בְּךָ֖ אֶל־ אָבִ֑י וְרָאִ֥יתִי מָ֖ה וְהִגַּ֥דְתִּי לָֽךְ׃ס wa·’ă·nî ’ê·ṣê wə·‘ā·maḏ·tî lə·yaḏ- ’ā·ḇî baś·śā·ḏeh ’ă·šer ’at·tāh šām wa·’ă·nî ’ă·ḏab·bêr bə·ḵā ’el- ’ā·ḇî wə·rā·’î·ṯî māh wə·hig·gaḏ·tî lāḵ — WLC · 3

Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David; he has not sinned against you… In fact, his actions [have been] highly beneficial to you.

יְהוֹנָתָ֤ן וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר ט֔וֹב בְּדָוִד֙ אֶל־ אָבִ֑יו שָׁא֖וּל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵ֠לָיו הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אַל־ יֶחֱטָ֨א בְּעַבְדּ֣וֹ בְדָוִ֗ד ל֤וֹא חָטָא֙ לָ֔ךְ וְכִ֥י כִּ֣י מַעֲשָׂ֖יו מְאֹֽד׃ טוֹב־ לְךָ֥ yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān way·ḏab·bêr ṭō·wḇ bə·ḏā·wiḏ ’el- ’ā·ḇîw šā·’ūl way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ham·me·leḵ ’al- ye·ḥĕ·ṭā bə·‘aḇ·dōw ḇə·ḏā·wiḏ lō·w ḥā·ṭā lāḵ wə·ḵî kî ma·‘ă·śāw mə·’ōḏ ṭō·wḇ- lə·ḵā — WLC · 4

He took his life in his hands when he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”

Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan and swore an oath…: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death.”

So Jonathan summoned David and told him all these things. Then Jonathan brought… David to Saul, and [David] was with [Saul] as before…

When war broke out again, David went out and fought the Philistines and struck them with such a mighty blow that they fled before him.

הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה לִֽהְי֑וֹת וַתּ֥וֹסֶף דָוִ֜ד וַיֵּצֵ֨א וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיַּ֤ךְ בָּהֶם֙ גְדוֹלָ֔ה מַכָּ֣ה וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃ ham·mil·ḥā·māh lih·yō·wṯ wat·tō·w·sep̄ ḏā·wiḏ way·yê·ṣê way·yil·lā·ḥem bap·pə·liš·tîm way·yaḵ bā·hem ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh mak·kāh way·yā·nu·sū mip·pā·nāw — WLC · 8

But as Saul was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD came upon him. While David was playing the harp…,
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤃
וְהוּא֙ יוֹשֵׁ֔ב בְּבֵית֣וֹ וַחֲנִית֖וֹ בְּיָד֑וֹ ר֨וּחַ רָעָה֙ יְהוָ֤ה׀ וַתְּהִי֩ אֶל־ שָׁא֔וּל וְדָוִ֖ד מְנַגֵּ֥ן בְּיָֽד׃ wə·hū yō·wō·šêḇ bə·ḇê·ṯōw wa·ḥă·nî·ṯōw bə·yā·ḏōw rū·aḥ rā·‘āh Yah·weh wat·tə·hî ’el- šā·’ūl wə·ḏā·wiḏ mə·nag·gên bə·yāḏ — WLC · 9

Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear. But David eluded… [him] and the spear struck the wall. And [David] fled and escaped that night.

שָׁא֜וּל וַיְבַקֵּ֨שׁ לְהַכּ֤וֹת בְּדָוִ֣ד וּבַקִּ֔יר בַּֽחֲנִית֙ וְדָוִ֛ד וַיִּפְטַר֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל הַחֲנִ֖ית וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶֽת־ בַּקִּ֑יר נָ֥ס וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט הֽוּא׃פ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה šā·’ūl way·ḇaq·qêš lə·hak·kō·wṯ bə·ḏā·wiḏ ū·ḇaq·qîr ba·ḥă·nîṯ wə·ḏā·wiḏ way·yip̄·ṭar mip·pə·nê šā·’ūl ha·ḥă·nîṯ way·yaḵ ’eṯ- baq·qîr nās way·yim·mā·lêṭ hū bal·lay·lāh — WLC · 10

Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and kill him in the morning. But David’s wife… Michal warned [him], “If you do not run for your life tonight, tomorrow you will be dead!”

שָׁא֨וּל וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ מַלְאָכִ֜ים אֶל־ דָּוִד֙ בֵּ֤ית לְשָׁמְר֔וֹ וְלַהֲמִית֖וֹ בַּבֹּ֑קֶר אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מִיכַ֤ל וַתַּגֵּ֣ד לְדָוִ֗ד אִם־ אֵ֨ינְךָ֜ מְמַלֵּ֤ט אֶֽת־ נַפְשְׁךָ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה מָחָ֖ר אַתָּ֥ה מוּמָֽת׃ šā·’ūl way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- dā·wiḏ bêṯ lə·šā·mə·rōw wə·la·hă·mî·ṯōw bab·bō·qer ’iš·tōw lê·mōr mî·ḵal wat·tag·gêḏ lə·ḏā·wiḏ ’im- ’ê·nə·ḵā mə·mal·lêṭ ’eṯ- nap̄·šə·ḵā hal·lay·lāh mā·ḥār ’at·tāh mū·māṯ — WLC · 11

So Michal lowered David from the window,… and he ran away and escaped.

מִיכַ֛ל אֶת־ וַתֹּ֧רֶד דָּוִ֖ד בְּעַ֣ד הַחַלּ֑וֹן וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַיִּבְרַ֖ח וַיִּמָּלֵֽט׃ mî·ḵal ’eṯ- wat·tō·reḏ dā·wiḏ bə·‘aḏ ha·ḥal·lō·wn way·yê·leḵ way·yiḇ·raḥ way·yim·mā·lêṭ — WLC · 12

Then Michal took a household idol and laid [it] in the bed, placed some goat hair… on its head, and covered it with a garment.

מִיכַ֜ל אֶת־ וַתִּקַּ֨ח הַתְּרָפִ֗ים וַתָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶל־ הַמִּטָּ֔ה וְאֵת֙ שָׂ֖מָה כְּבִ֣יר הָֽעִזִּ֔ים מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֑יו וַתְּכַ֖ס בַּבָּֽגֶד׃ס mî·ḵal ’eṯ- wat·tiq·qaḥ hat·tə·rā·p̄îm wat·tā·śem ’el- ham·miṭ·ṭāh wə·’êṯ śā·māh kə·ḇîr hā·‘iz·zîm mə·ra·’ă·šō·ṯāw wat·tə·ḵas bab·bā·ḡeḏ — WLC · 13

When Saul sent the messengers to seize David, Michal said, “He [is] ill.”

שָׁא֛וּל וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח מַלְאָכִ֖ים לָקַ֣חַת אֶת־ דָּוִ֑ד וַתֹּ֖אמֶר הֽוּא׃פ חֹלֶ֥ה šā·’ūl way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm lā·qa·ḥaṯ ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ wat·tō·mer hū ḥō·leh — WLC · 14

But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”

שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים לִרְא֥וֹת אֶת־ דָּוִ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר הַעֲל֨וּ אֹת֧וֹ אֵלַ֖י בַמִּטָּ֛ה לַהֲמִתֽוֹ׃ šā·’ūl ’eṯ- way·yiš·laḥ ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm lir·’ō·wṯ ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ lê·mōr ha·‘ă·lū ’ō·ṯōw ’ê·lay ḇam·miṭ·ṭāh la·hă·mi·ṯōw — WLC · 15

And when the messengers entered, there was the idol in the bed vvv with the goat [hair] on its head.

And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away, and he has escaped!” Michal… replied -, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will kill you!’”

So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went [to Naioth] and stayed [there].

When Saul was told… that David was at Naioth in Ramah,

he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel… leading them, the Spirit of God came upon them, and Saul’s messengers also began to prophesy. -

When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third [time], and even they began to prophesy.

Finally, Saul himself left for… Ramah and came to the large cistern at Secu, where he asked…, “Where are Samuel and David?” “At Naioth in Ramah,” he was told -.

So Saul went… to Naioth in Ramah. But the Spirit of God came upon even [Saul], and he walked along… prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

Then Saul stripped off his robes and also prophesied - before Samuel. And he collapsed and lay naked all that day and night. That is why… it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
