Chapter 4

The Philistines Capture the Ark

1

Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped at vvv Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.

The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield…

When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines today? Let us bring… the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”

So the people sent [men] to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered… the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great shout that the ground shook.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤌

וַיְהִ֗י אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָה֙ כְּב֨וֹא אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה כָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל גְדוֹלָ֑ה תְּרוּעָ֣ה וַיָּרִ֥עוּ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וַתֵּהֹ֖ם way·hî ’ă·rō·wn bə·rîṯ- Yah·weh kə·ḇō·w ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh tə·rū·‘āh way·yā·ri·‘ū hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tê·hōmWLC · 5

On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is… this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered… the camp,

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄

the Philistines were afraid -. “The gods have entered… their camp!”… they said. “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before…

הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיִּֽרְאוּ֙ כִּ֣י אֱלֹהִ֖ים בָּ֥א אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ אָמְר֔וּ א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י לֹ֥א כָּזֹ֖את הָיְתָ֛ה אֶתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃ hap·pə·liš·tîm way·yir·’ū kî ’ĕ·lō·hîm bā ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh way·yō·mə·rū ’ā·mə·rū ’ō·w lā·nū kî lō kā·zōṯ hā·yə·ṯāh ’eṯ·mō·wl šil·šōmWLC · 7

Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These… are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ מִ֣י יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ מִיַּ֛ד הָאֵ֑לֶּה הָאַדִּירִ֖ים הָאֱלֹהִ֥ים אֵ֧לֶּה הֵ֣ם הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים הַמַּכִּ֧ים אֶת־ מִצְרַ֛יִם בְּכָל־ מַכָּ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ ’ō·w lā·nū mî yaṣ·ṣî·lê·nū mî·yaḏ hā·’êl·leh hā·’ad·dî·rîm hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êl·leh hêm hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ham·mak·kîm ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim bə·ḵāl mak·kāh bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 8

Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”

𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤌

הִֽתְחַזְּק֞וּ וִֽהְי֤וּ לַֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים פֶּ֚ן תַּעַבְד֣וּ לָעִבְרִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָבְד֖וּ לָכֶ֑ם וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם לַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וְנִלְחַמְתֶּֽם׃ hiṯ·ḥaz·zə·qū wih·yū la·’ă·nā·šîm pə·liš·tîm pen ta·‘aḇ·ḏū lā·‘iḇ·rîm ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·ḇə·ḏū lā·ḵem wih·yî·ṯem la·’ă·nā·šîm wə·nil·ḥam·temWLC · 9

So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great— thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.

The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

The Death of Eli

That same day a Benjamite… ran from the battle line all the way to Shiloh, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤒𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅

When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road [and] watching, because his heart vvv trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city cried out.

וַיָּב֗וֹא וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵ֠לִי יֹשֵׁ֨ב עַֽל־ הַכִּסֵּ֜א יַךְ דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ מְצַפֶּ֔ה כִּֽי־ לִבּוֹ֙ הָיָ֤ה חָרֵ֔ד עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְהָאִ֗ישׁ בָּ֚א בָּעִ֔יר לְהַגִּ֣יד כָּל־ הָעִֽיר׃ וַתִּזְעַ֖ק way·yā·ḇō·w wə·hin·nêh ‘ê·lî yō·šêḇ ‘al- hak·kis·sê yaḵ de·reḵ mə·ṣap·peh kî- lib·bōw hā·yāh ḥā·rêḏ ‘al ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·hā·’îš bā bā·‘îr lə·hag·gîḏ kāl- hā·‘îr wat·tiz·‘aqWLC · 13

Eli heard the outcry… and asked, “Why… this commotion?” So the man hurried over… and reported to Eli.

Now Eli was ninety-eight… years old…, and his gaze was fixed because he could not… see.

וְעֵלִ֕י תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֑ה וְעֵינָ֣יו קָ֔מָה וְלֹ֥א יָכ֖וֹל לִרְאֽוֹת׃ wə·‘ê·lî tiš·‘îm ū·šə·mō·neh ben- šā·nāh wə·‘ê·nāw qā·māh wə·lō yā·ḵō·wl lir·’ō·wṯWLC · 15

“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to Eli. “I fled from there today…” “What happened…, my son?” Eli asked.

𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤎𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

אָֽנֹכִי֙ הַבָּ֣א מִן־ הַמַּעֲרָכָ֔ה הָאִ֜ישׁ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ עֵלִ֗י וַאֲנִ֕י נַ֣סְתִּי מִן־ הַמַּעֲרָכָ֖ה הַיּ֑וֹם מֶֽה־ הָיָ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּנִֽי׃ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר ’ā·nō·ḵî hab·bā min- ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh hā·’îš way·yō·mer ’el- ‘ê·lî wa·’ă·nî nas·tî min- ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh hay·yō·wm meh- hā·yāh had·dā·ḇār bə·nî way·yō·merWLC · 16

The messenger… answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people… Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

𐤄𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤎 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤇𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤎 𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤄𐤐

הַֽמְבַשֵּׂ֜ר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וַיַּ֨עַן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ נָ֤ס לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְגַ֛ם הָיְתָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה מַגֵּפָ֥ה בָעָ֑ם וְגַם־ שְׁנֵ֨י בָנֶ֜יךָ חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣ינְחָ֔ס מֵ֗תוּ וַאֲר֥וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים נִלְקָֽחָה׃פ ham·ḇaś·śêr way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an yiś·rā·’êl nās lip̄·nê p̄ə·liš·tîm wə·ḡam hā·yə·ṯāh ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh mag·gê·p̄āh ḇā·‘ām wə·ḡam- šə·nê ḇā·ne·ḵā ḥā·p̄ə·nî ū·p̄î·nə·ḥās mê·ṯū wa·’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm nil·qā·ḥāhWLC · 17

As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward… from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And [Eli] had judged Israel forty years.

וַיְהִ֞י אֶת־ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים כְּהַזְכִּיר֣וֹ׀ וַיִּפֹּ֣ל אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית בְּעַ֣ד׀ מֵֽעַל־ הַ֠כִּסֵּא יַ֣ד הַשַּׁ֗עַר כִּֽי־ הָאִ֖ישׁ זָקֵ֥ן וְכָבֵ֑ד וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר מַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙ וַיָּמֹ֔ת וְה֛וּא שָׁפַ֥ט אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ way·hî ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm kə·haz·kî·rōw way·yip·pōl ’ă·ḥō·ran·nîṯ bə·‘aḏ mê·‘al- hak·kis·sê yaḏ haš·ša·‘ar kî- hā·’îš zā·qên wə·ḵā·ḇêḏ wat·tiš·šā·ḇêr map̄·raq·tōw way·yā·mōṯ wə·hū šā·p̄aṭ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāhWLC · 18

Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.

𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤐𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤎 𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤋𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤊𐤉 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄

וְכַלָּת֣וֹ אֵֽשֶׁת־ פִּינְחָס֮ הָרָ֣ה לָלַת֒ וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֶת־ הַשְּׁמֻעָ֔ה אֶל־ הִלָּקַח֙ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲר֣וֹן וּמֵ֥ת חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָׁ֑הּ וַתִּכְרַ֣ע וַתֵּ֔לֶד כִּֽי־ צִרֶֽיהָ׃ נֶהֶפְכ֥וּ עָלֶ֖יהָ wə·ḵal·lā·ṯōw ’ê·šeṯ- pî·nə·ḥās hā·rāh lā·laṯ wat·tiš·ma‘ ’eṯ- haš·šə·mu·‘āh ’el- hil·lā·qaḥ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·rō·wn ū·mêṯ ḥā·mî·hā wə·’î·šāh wat·tiḵ·ra‘ wat·tê·leḏ kî- ṣi·re·hā ne·hep̄·ḵū ‘ā·le·hāWLC · 19

As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond… or pay any heed…

𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤄

וּכְעֵ֣ת מוּתָ֗הּ הַנִּצָּב֣וֹת עָלֶ֔יהָ וַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙ אַל־ תִּֽירְאִ֖י כִּ֣י יָלָ֑דְתְּ בֵ֣ן וְלֹ֥א עָנְתָ֖ה וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥תָה לִבָּֽהּ׃ ū·ḵə·‘êṯ mū·ṯāh han·niṣ·ṣā·ḇō·wṯ ‘ā·le·hā wat·tə·ḏab·bê·rə·nāh ’al- tî·rə·’î kî yā·lā·ḏət ḇên wə·lō ‘ā·nə·ṯāh wə·lō- šā·ṯāh lib·bāhWLC · 20

And she named the boy vvv Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured [and] her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.

𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤉 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄

וַתִּקְרָ֣א לַנַּ֗עַר אִֽי־ כָבוֹד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כָב֖וֹד גָּלָ֥ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶל־ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים הִלָּקַח֙ וְאֶל־ חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃ wat·tiq·rā lan·na·‘ar ’î- ḵā·ḇō·wḏ lê·mōr ḵā·ḇō·wḏ gā·lāh mî·yiś·rā·’êl ’el- ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm hil·lā·qaḥ wə·’el- ḥā·mî·hā wə·’î·šāhWLC · 21

“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
