Chapter 6
The Ark Returned to Israel
1
When the ark of the LORD had been in the land of the Philistines seven months,

אֲרוֹן־ יְהוָ֛ה וַיְהִ֧י בִּשְׂדֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים שִׁבְעָ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃ ’ă·rō·wn- Yah·weh way·hî biś·ḏêh p̄ə·liš·tîm šiḇ·‘āh ḥo·ḏā·šîm — WLC · 1

the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”

פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ לַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים וְלַקֹּֽסְמִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַֽה־ נַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַאֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֑ה הוֹדִעֻ֕נוּ בַּמֶּ֖ה נְשַׁלְּחֶ֥נּוּ לִמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ p̄ə·liš·tîm way·yiq·rə·’ū lak·kō·hă·nîm wə·laq·qō·sə·mîm lê·mōr mah- na·‘ă·śeh la·’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh hō·w·ḏi·‘u·nū bam·meh nə·šal·lə·ḥen·nū lim·qō·w·mōw — WLC · 2

They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return [it]… to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”

“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “[according to] the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague [has struck] both you and your rulers.

מָ֣ה הָאָשָׁם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָשִׁ֣יב לוֹ֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ חֲמִשָּׁה֙ זָהָ֔ב עָפְלֵי וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה זָהָ֑ב עַכְבְּרֵ֣י וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ מִסְפַּר֙ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כִּֽי־ אַחַ֛ת מַגֵּפָ֥ה לְכֻלָּ֖ם וּלְסַרְנֵיכֶֽם׃ māh hā·’ā·šām ’ă·šer nā·šîḇ lōw way·yō·mə·rū ḥă·miš·šāh zā·hāḇ ʿå̄·p̄ə·lē wa·ḥă·miš·šāh zā·hāḇ ‘aḵ·bə·rê way·yō·mə·rū mis·par sar·nê p̄ə·liš·tîm kî- ’a·ḥaṯ mag·gê·p̄āh lə·ḵul·lām ū·lə·sar·nê·ḵem — WLC · 4

Make images of your tumors… and of the rats that are ravaging the land. Give glory to the God of Israel, and perhaps He will lift His hand from you and your gods and your land.

וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֩ צַלְמֵ֨י עָפְלֵיכֶם וְצַלְמֵ֣י עַכְבְּרֵיכֶ֗ם הַמַּשְׁחִיתִם֙ אֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וּנְתַתֶּ֛ם כָּב֑וֹד לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אוּלַ֗י יָקֵ֤ל אֶת־ יָדוֹ֙ מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֔ם וּמֵעַ֥ל אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם וּמֵעַ֥ל אַרְצְכֶֽם׃ wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ṣal·mê ʿå̄·p̄ə·lē·ḵɛm wə·ṣal·mê ‘aḵ·bə·rê·ḵem ham·maš·ḥî·ṯim ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ū·nə·ṯat·tem kā·ḇō·wḏ lê·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ū·lay yā·qêl ’eṯ- yā·ḏōw mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem ū·mê·‘al ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ū·mê·‘al ’ar·ṣə·ḵem — WLC · 5

Why harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened theirs? When He afflicted them, did they not send the people out so they could go on their way?
𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅
וְלָ֤מָּה תְכַבְּדוּ֙ אֶת־ לְבַבְכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר מִצְרַ֥יִם וּפַרְעֹ֖ה אֶת־ כִּבְּד֛וּ לִבָּ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר הִתְעַלֵּ֣ל בָּהֶ֔ם הֲלוֹא֙ וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֖וּם וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ wə·lām·māh ṯə·ḵab·bə·ḏū ’eṯ- lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem ka·’ă·šer miṣ·ra·yim ū·p̄ar·‘ōh ’eṯ- kib·bə·ḏū lib·bām ka·’ă·šer hiṯ·‘al·lêl bā·hem hă·lō·w way·šal·lə·ḥūm way·yê·lê·ḵū — WLC · 6

Now, therefore,… prepare one new cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked… Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves… away and pen them up.

וְעַתָּ֗ה קְח֨וּ וַעֲשׂ֜וּ אֶחָ֔ת חֲדָשָׁה֙ עֲגָלָ֤ה וּשְׁתֵּ֤י עָל֔וֹת פָרוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ עָלָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עֹ֑ל וַאֲסַרְתֶּ֤ם אֶת־ הַפָּרוֹת֙ בָּעֲגָלָ֔ה בְּנֵיהֶ֛ם מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם וַהֲשֵׁיבֹתֶ֧ם הַבָּֽיְתָה׃ wə·‘at·tāh qə·ḥū wa·‘ă·śū ’e·ḥāṯ ḥă·ḏā·šāh ‘ă·ḡā·lāh ū·šə·tê ‘ā·lō·wṯ p̄ā·rō·wṯ ’ă·šer lō- ‘ā·lāh ‘ă·lê·hem ‘ōl wa·’ă·sar·tem ’eṯ- hap·pā·rō·wṯ bā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh bə·nê·hem mê·’a·ḥă·rê·hem wa·hă·šê·ḇō·ṯem hab·bā·yə·ṯāh — WLC · 7

Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to Him as a guilt offering. Then send [the ark] on its way,
𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤂𐤆 𐤌𐤑𐤃𐤅 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊
וּלְקַחְתֶּ֞ם אֶת־ אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֗ה וּנְתַתֶּ֤ם אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־ הָ֣עֲגָלָ֔ה וְאֵ֣ת׀ בָאַרְגַּ֖ז מִצִּדּ֑וֹ תָּשִׂ֥ימוּ הַזָּהָ֗ב כְּלֵ֣י אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֲשֵׁבֹתֶ֥ם לוֹ֙ אָשָׁ֔ם וְשִׁלַּחְתֶּ֥ם אֹת֖וֹ וְהָלָֽךְ׃ ū·lə·qaḥ·tem ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ū·nə·ṯat·tem ’ō·ṯōw ’el- hā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh wə·’êṯ ḇā·’ar·gaz miṣ·ṣid·dōw tā·śî·mū haz·zā·hāḇ kə·lê ’ă·šer hă·šê·ḇō·ṯem lōw ’ā·šām wə·šil·laḥ·tem ’ō·ṯōw wə·hā·lāḵ — WLC · 8

but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, vvv toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”

וּרְאִיתֶ֗ם אִם־ יַֽעֲלֶה֙ דֶּ֨רֶךְ גְּבוּל֤וֹ בֵּ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ ה֚וּא עָ֣שָׂה לָ֔נוּ אֶת־ הַזֹּ֑את הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה הָרָעָ֥ה וְאִם־ לֹ֗א וְיָדַ֙עְנוּ֙ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָדוֹ֙ נָ֣גְעָה בָּ֔נוּ ה֖וּא הָ֥יָה לָֽנוּ׃ מִקְרֶ֥ה ū·rə·’î·ṯem ’im- ya·‘ă·leh de·reḵ gə·ḇū·lōw bêṯ še·meš hū ‘ā·śāh lā·nū ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh hā·rā·‘āh wə·’im- lō wə·yā·ḏa‘·nū kî lō yā·ḏōw nā·ḡə·‘āh bā·nū hū hā·yāh lā·nū miq·reh — WLC · 9

So the men did [as instructed]. They took two milk cows, hitched them to the cart, and penned up… their calves.

הָאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיַּעֲשׂ֤וּ כֵּ֔ן וַיִּקְח֗וּ שְׁתֵּ֤י עָל֔וֹת פָרוֹת֙ וַיַּאַסְר֖וּם בָּעֲגָלָ֑ה וְאֶת־ כָּל֥וּ בַבָּֽיִת׃ בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·ya·‘ă·śū kên way·yiq·ḥū šə·tê ‘ā·lō·wṯ p̄ā·rō·wṯ way·ya·’as·rūm bā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh wə·’eṯ- kā·lū ḇab·bā·yiṯ bə·nê·hem — WLC · 10

Then they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, along with the chest containing the gold rats and the images of the tumors.
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤂𐤆 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤊𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤈𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌
וַיָּשִׂ֛מוּ אֶת־ אֲר֥וֹן יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ הָעֲגָלָ֑ה וְאֵ֣ת הָאַרְגַּ֗ז וְאֵת֙ הַזָּהָ֔ב וְאֵ֖ת עַכְבְּרֵ֣י צַלְמֵ֥י טְחֹרֵיהֶֽם׃ way·yā·śi·mū ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ’el- hā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh wə·’êṯ hā·’ar·gaz wə·’êṯ haz·zā·hāḇ wə·’êṯ ‘aḵ·bə·rê ṣal·mê ṭə·ḥō·rê·hem — WLC · 11

And the cows headed straight up the road toward… vvv Beth-shemesh, staying on that one highway and lowing as they went…, never straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border vvv of Beth-shemesh.
𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤎𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤎𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤔
הַפָּר֜וֹת וַיִשַּׁ֨רְנָה בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ עַל־ דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ בֵּ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ אַחַ֗ת בִּמְסִלָּ֣ה וְגָע֔וֹ הָלְכ֤וּ הָלֹךְ֙ וְלֹא־ סָ֖רוּ יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול וְסַרְנֵ֤י פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ הֹלְכִ֣ים אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם עַד־ גְּב֖וּל בֵּ֥ית שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃ hap·pā·rō·wṯ wa·yiš·šar·nå̄h bad·de·reḵ ‘al- de·reḵ bêṯ še·meš ’a·ḥaṯ bim·sil·lāh wə·ḡā·‘ōw hā·lə·ḵū hā·lōḵ wə·lō- sā·rū yā·mîn ū·śə·mō·wl wə·sar·nê p̄ə·liš·tîm hō·lə·ḵîm ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ‘aḏ- gə·ḇūl bêṯ šā·meš — WLC · 12

vvv Now [the people of] Beth-shemesh were harvesting… wheat in the valley, and when they looked up - and saw the ark, they were overjoyed at the sight.

וּבֵ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ קֹצְרִ֥ים קְצִיר־ חִטִּ֖ים בָּעֵ֑מֶק וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ אֶת־ עֵינֵיהֶ֗ם וַיִּרְאוּ֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אָר֔וֹן וַֽיִּשְׂמְח֖וּ לִרְאֽוֹת׃ ū·ḇêṯ še·meš qō·ṣə·rîm qə·ṣîr- ḥiṭ·ṭîm bā·‘ê·meq way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- ‘ê·nê·hem way·yir·’ū ’eṯ- hā·’ā·rō·wn way·yiś·mə·ḥū lir·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 13

The cart came to the field of Joshua vvv of Beth-shemesh and stopped there… near a large rock. The people chopped up - the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.

And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing… - the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men vvv of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.

And when the five rulers of the Philistines saw [this], they returned to Ekron that same day.

- As a guilt offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent back one gold tumor [for each city]: Ashdod, Gaza,… Ashkelon,… Gath,… and Ekron…

The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number… of Philistine cities [belonging] to the five rulers— the fortified cities and their outlying… villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD [stands] to this day in the field of Joshua vvv of Beth-shemesh.

But God struck down… some of the people of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men - -, and the people mourned because the LORD… had struck them with a great slaughter.

The men vvv of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”

So they sent messengers to the people vvv of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down [and] take it up with you.”
