Chapter 19

Joab Reproves David

1

Then it was reported to Joab,… “The king is weeping and mourning over Absalom.”

𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤌

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לְיוֹאָ֑ב הִנֵּ֨ה הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ בֹּכֶ֛ה וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֖ל עַל־ אַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃ way·yug·gaḏ lə·yō·w·’āḇ hin·nêh ham·me·leḵ bō·ḵeh way·yiṯ·’ab·bêl ‘al- ’aḇ·šā·lōmWLC · 1

And that day’s victory was turned into mourning for all the people, because on that… day [they] were told, “The king is grieving over his son.”

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤏𐤑𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤅

הַה֛וּא בַּיּ֥וֹם הַתְּשֻׁעָ֜ה וַתְּהִ֨י לְאֵ֖בֶל לְכָל־ הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־ הַהוּא֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בַּיּ֤וֹם הָעָ֗ם שָׁמַ֣ע הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ נֶעֱצַ֥ב עַל־ בְּנֽוֹ׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm hat·tə·šu·‘āh wat·tə·hî lə·’ê·ḇel lə·ḵāl hā·‘ām kî- ha·hū lê·mōr bay·yō·wm hā·‘ām šā·ma‘ ham·me·leḵ ne·‘ĕ·ṣaḇ ‘al- bə·nōwWLC · 2

So they returned to the city quietly that day, as people steal away in humiliation after fleeing a battle.

הָעָ֛ם לָב֣וֹא הָעִ֑יר וַיִּתְגַּנֵּ֥ב הַה֖וּא בַּיּ֥וֹם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר הָעָם֙ יִתְגַּנֵּ֗ב הַנִּכְלָמִ֔ים בְּנוּסָ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ hā·‘ām lā·ḇō·w hā·‘îr way·yiṯ·gan·nêḇ ha·hū bay·yō·wm ka·’ă·šer hā·‘ām yiṯ·gan·nêḇ han·niḵ·lā·mîm bə·nū·sām bam·mil·ḥā·māhWLC · 3

But the king covered his face and cried out… at the top of his voice, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤎

וְהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ לָאַ֣ט אֶת־ פָּנָ֔יו וַיִּזְעַ֥ק הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ גָּד֑וֹל ק֣וֹל בְּנִי֙ אַבְשָׁל֔וֹם אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם בְּנִ֥י בְנִֽי׃ס wə·ham·me·leḵ lā·’aṭ ’eṯ- pā·nāw way·yiz·‘aq ham·me·leḵ gā·ḏō·wl qō·wl bə·nî ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm bə·nî ḇə·nîWLC · 4

Then Joab went into the house and said to the king, “Today you have disgraced - all your servants who have saved your life… and the lives of your sons and daughters,… of your wives,… and of your concubines.

יוֹאָ֛ב וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־ הַבָּ֑יִת וַיֹּאמֶר֩ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ הַיּ֜וֹם הֹבַ֨שְׁתָּ אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ הַֽמְמַלְּטִ֤ים אֶֽת־ נַפְשְׁךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֵ֨ת נֶ֤פֶשׁ בָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ נָשֶׁ֔יךָ וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ פִּלַגְשֶֽׁיךָ׃ yō·w·’āḇ way·yā·ḇō ’el- hab·bā·yiṯ way·yō·mer ham·me·leḵ hay·yō·wm hō·ḇaš·tā ’eṯ- pə·nê ḵāl ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ham·mal·lə·ṭîm ’eṯ- nap̄·šə·ḵā hay·yō·wm wə·’êṯ ne·p̄eš bā·ne·ḵā ū·ḇə·nō·ṯe·ḵā wə·ne·p̄eš nā·še·ḵā wə·ne·p̄eš pi·laḡ·še·ḵāWLC · 5

You love those who hate you and hate those who love you! For you have made it clear today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know today… that if Absalom were alive and all… of us were dead,… it would have pleased you…!

לְאַֽהֲבָה֙ אֶת־ שֹׂ֣נְאֶ֔יךָ וְלִשְׂנֹ֖א אֶת־ אֹהֲבֶ֑יךָ הִגַּ֣דְתָּ הַיּ֗וֹם כִּ֣י׀ כִּ֣י שָׂרִ֣ים וַעֲבָדִ֔ים אֵ֤ין לְךָ֙ יָדַ֣עְתִּי הַיּ֗וֹם כִּ֠י כִּ֣י׀ לֹא אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם חַי֙ וְכֻלָּ֤נוּ הַיּוֹם֙ מֵתִ֔ים כִּי־ אָ֖ז יָשָׁ֥ר בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ lə·’a·hă·ḇāh ’eṯ- śō·nə·’e·ḵā wə·liś·nō ’eṯ- ’ō·hă·ḇe·ḵā hig·gaḏ·tā hay·yō·wm kî kî śā·rîm wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm ’ên lə·ḵā yā·ḏa‘·tî hay·yō·wm kî kî lō ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm ḥay wə·ḵul·lā·nū hay·yō·wm mê·ṯîm kî- ’āz yā·šār bə·‘ê·ne·ḵāWLC · 6

Now therefore get up! Go out and speak… comfort to your servants, for I swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you tonight. This will be worse for you than all the adversity that has befallen you from your youth until now!”

וְעַתָּה֙ ק֣וּם צֵ֔א וְדַבֵּ֖ר עַל־ לֵ֣ב עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ כִּי֩ נִשְׁבַּ֜עְתִּי בַיהוָ֨ה כִּי־ אֵינְךָ֣ יוֹצֵ֗א אִם־ אִ֤ישׁ יָלִ֨ין אִתְּךָ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה זֹ֗את וְרָעָ֧ה לְךָ֣ מִכָּל־ הָרָעָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֣אָה עָלֶ֔יךָ מִנְּעֻרֶ֖יךָ עַד־ עָֽתָּה׃ס wə·‘at·tāh qūm ṣê wə·ḏab·bêr ‘al- lêḇ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā kî niš·ba‘·tî Yah·weh kî- ’ê·nə·ḵā yō·w·ṣê ’im- ’îš yā·lîn ’it·tə·ḵā hal·lay·lāh zōṯ wə·rā·‘āh lə·ḵā mik·kāl hā·rā·‘āh ’ă·šer- bā·’āh ‘ā·le·ḵā min·nə·‘u·re·ḵā ‘aḏ- ‘āt·tāhWLC · 7

David Restored as King

So the king got up and sat in the gate, and all the people were told:… “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” So they all came before the king. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled, each man to his home.

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤎 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤎

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וַיָּ֥קָם וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב בַּשָּׁ֑עַר וּֽלְכָל־ הָעָ֞ם הִגִּ֣ידוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הִנֵּ֤ה הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בַּשַּׁ֔עַר הָעָם֙ כָל־ וַיָּבֹ֤א לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נָ֖ס אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃ס ham·me·leḵ way·yā·qām way·yê·šeḇ baš·šā·‘ar ū·lə·ḵāl- hā·‘ām hig·gî·ḏū lê·mōr hin·nêh ham·me·leḵ yō·wō·šêḇ baš·ša·‘ar hā·‘ām ḵāl way·yā·ḇō lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ wə·yiś·rā·’êl nās ’îš lə·’ō·hā·lāwWLC · 8

And all the people throughout the tribes of Israel vvv were arguing, “The king rescued us from the hand of our enemies and delivered us from the hand of the Philistines, but now he has fled… the land because of Absalom.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤍𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤐 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤈𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤐 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤇 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

וַיְהִ֤י כָל־ הָעָם֙ בְּכָל־ שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר נָד֔וֹן הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ הִצִּילָ֣נוּ׀ מִכַּ֣ף אֹיְבֵ֗ינוּ וְה֤וּא מִלְּטָ֙נוּ֙ מִכַּ֣ף פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְעַתָּ֛ה בָּרַ֥ח מִן־ הָאָ֖רֶץ מֵעַ֥ל אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ way·hî ḵāl hā·‘ām bə·ḵāl šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr nā·ḏō·wn ham·me·leḵ hiṣ·ṣî·lā·nū mik·kap̄ ’ō·yə·ḇê·nū wə·hū mil·lə·ṭā·nū mik·kap̄ pə·liš·tîm wə·‘at·tāh bā·raḥ min- hā·’ā·reṣ mê·‘al ’aḇ·šā·lō·wmWLC · 9

But Absalom, the man we anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤎

וְאַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָשַׁ֣חְנוּ עָלֵ֔ינוּ מֵ֖ת בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְעַתָּ֗ה לָמָ֥ה אַתֶּ֛ם מַחֲרִשִׁ֖ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס wə·’aḇ·šā·lō·wm ’ă·šer mā·šaḥ·nū ‘ā·lê·nū mêṯ bam·mil·ḥā·māh wə·‘at·tāh lā·māh ’at·tem ma·ḥă·ri·šîm lə·hā·šîḇ ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵWLC · 10

Then King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests…: “Say to the elders of Judah,… ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king… at his quarters?

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤅𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅

וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֗ד שָׁ֠לַח אֶל־ צָד֨וֹק וְאֶל־ אֶבְיָתָ֥ר הַכֹּהֲנִים֮ לֵאמֹר֒ דַּבְּר֞וּ אֶל־ זִקְנֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לָ֤מָּה תִֽהְיוּ֙ אַֽחֲרֹנִ֔ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ בֵּית֑וֹ וּדְבַר֙ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּ֥א הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ אֶל־ בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ wə·ham·me·leḵ dā·wiḏ šā·laḥ ’el- ṣā·ḏō·wq wə·’el- ’eḇ·yā·ṯār hak·kō·hă·nîm lê·mōr dab·bə·rū ’el- ziq·nê yə·hū·ḏāh lê·mōr lām·māh ṯih·yū ’a·ḥă·rō·nîm lə·hā·šîḇ ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ ’el- bê·ṯōw ū·ḏə·ḇar kāl- yiś·rā·’êl bā ham·me·leḵ ’el- ’el- bê·ṯōwWLC · 11

You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to restore the king?’

𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊

אַתֶּ֔ם אַחַ֣י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י עַצְמִ֥י וְלָ֧מָּה אַתֶּ֑ם תִהְי֛וּ אַחֲרֹנִ֖ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ ’at·tem ’a·ḥay ū·ḇə·śā·rî ‘aṣ·mî wə·lām·māh ’at·tem ṯih·yū ’a·ḥă·rō·nîm lə·hā·šîḇ ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵWLC · 12

And say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood? May God punish… me, and ever so severely, if from now on… you are not the commander of my army in place of Joab!’”

𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤁

תֹּֽמְר֔וּ וְלַֽעֲמָשָׂא֙ הֲל֛וֹא אָ֑תָּה וּבְשָׂרִ֖י עַצְמִ֥י אֱלֹהִים֙ כֹּ֣ה יַֽעֲשֶׂה־ לִּ֤י וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֔יף אִם־ כָּל־ הַיָּמִ֖ים תִּהְיֶ֧ה לֹ֠א שַׂר־ לְפָנַ֛י צָבָ֞א תַּ֥חַת יוֹאָֽב׃ tō·mə·rū wə·la·‘ă·mā·śā hă·lō·w ’āt·tāh ū·ḇə·śā·rî ‘aṣ·mî ’ĕ·lō·hîm kōh ya·‘ă·śeh- lî wə·ḵōh yō·w·sîp̄ ’im- kāl- hay·yā·mîm tih·yeh lō śar- lə·p̄ā·nay ṣā·ḇā ta·ḥaṯ yō·w·’āḇWLC · 13

So he swayed the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one man, and they sent word to the king: “Return, you and all your servants.”

𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊

So the king returned, and when he arrived at the Jordan, [the men of] Judah came to Gilgal to meet [him] and escort him across the Jordan.

Then Shimei son of Gera, vvv a Benjamite from Bahurim,… hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David,

and crossed at the ford to carry over the king’s household and to do what was good in his sight. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell down before the king

and said -, “My lord, do not hold me guilty, and do not remember - your servant’s wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.

But Abishai son of Zeruiah… said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”

So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore an oath to him.

Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet [or] trimmed his mustache [or] washed his clothes… from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.

And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, [who] asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”

“My lord the king,” he replied, “because [I] am lame, [I] said, ‘I will have my donkey… saddled so that I may ride on it and go with the king.’ But my servant [Ziba] deceived me, -

and he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. Yet my lord the king [is] like the angel of God, so do [what is] good in your eyes.

For… all the house of my grandfather… deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have… to keep appealing to the king?”

The king replied “Why say any more? I hereby declare that you and Ziba are to divide the land.”

And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has safely come to his own house, let Ziba take it all!”

David’s Kindness to Barzillai

Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and send him on his way [from there].

Barzillai was quite old, eighty years of age, and since he was a very wealthy man,… he had provided for the king while he stayed in Mahanaim.

The king said to Barzillai,… “Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.”

But Barzillai replied -, “How many years… of my life [remain], that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?

I am now eighty years old… Can I discern… what is good and what is not?… Can your servant taste what he eats - or drinks?… Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

Your servant will go with the king only a short distance past the Jordan; why should the king repay me with such a reward?

Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”

The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”

So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned home.

Then the king crossed over to Gilgal, and Chimham crossed over with him. All the troops of Judah… and half the troops of Israel escorted the king.

Contention over the King

Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked…, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and bring the king and his household across the Jordan, together with all of David’s men?”

And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “[We did this] because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you?… Have we ever eaten… at the king’s [expense] or… received anything for ourselves?”

“We have ten shares in the king,” answered the men of Israel - -, “so we have more claim… to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Were we not… the first to speak of restoring our king?” But the men of Judah spoke more fiercely… [than] the men of Israel.
